Joey Votto and Homer Bailey

Joey Votto:

But at least doctors now know what the problem is. Votto was diagnosed with a left inner ear infection Thursday. The Reds’ top hitter, who has missed all or parts of 10 games because of the flu or dizzy spells, won’t need to be put on the disabled list and could be back in the lineup within days.

“After all the tests I went through, it was a pretty scary few days,” Votto said after the Reds’ 12-5 loss to the Phillies on Thursday. “A lot of the tests were pretty imposing and I never experienced them before. To get them all back negative was a big relief. I’m not going to get into detail, but none of them [the tests] were fun. I feel like a pin cushion.”

Homer Bailey:

Edinson Volquez (back spasms) has been placed on the 15-day DL retroactive to Sunday. Homer Bailey will be called up to start in Volquez’ place Saturday vs. Cleveland.

    Definitely good news about Votto.

Do you think he had a spinal tap? Yikes. Good movie, but unpleasant medical procedure.

    Good news on both!

Glad to see Votto will be back soon and I’m anxious to see Homer’s season debut

His first start was against Cleveland and he came out of there with a win. I’m hoping he does the same here

  • So they do know how to use the DL.

  • Call me crazy, but when someone tells me they are dizzy the first thing I would do is look in their ear and I’m not a doctor. I would at least rule out the inner ear infection before I put the person through a battery of uncomfortable tests.

:?: Chad, or others in the know, isn’t Bailey now out of options and more or less ‘frozen’ on the Reds roster, meaning some other move will have to be made with EV is ready to return? Is there a site that maintains info on #of options a player has left?

  • No, an option lasts for a full season…this is the last season (I believe) that Homer has options…he can be sent up and down (w/o being exposed to waivers) between Cincinnati and Louisville like a yo-yo.

I guess he is starting tomorrow, but I wouldn’t have disagreed with them calling up a relief pitcher for one night tonight in case they have to go to the bullpen early again tonight.

I am surprised they didn’t call up Maloney for Saturday. He is having a very good year and would give them a lefty in the rotation (Aren’t Cleveland’s best hitters left handed?).

Here’s a comparison of Maloney and Bailey’s numbers this year in Louisville:

    Maloney: 44.1 IP, 44 H, 3 HR, 6 BB, 38 K, 2.66 ERA, 1.14 WHIP
    Bailey: 45.1 IP, 46 H, 9 HR, 17 BB, 43 K, 4.60 ERA, 1.40 WHIP

Well, here’s another dumb move. Until Bailey proves he can perform in the minors there’s no point in bringing him to the majors. You burn another option on him that moves him closer to leaving the REDS. Bailey needs to get his head right. He’ll do the same thing this time around that he’s done before. He can’t throw strikes consistently and he’ll be in trouble the first time he has to go from the stretch position. I would have left him in Louisville until he proved he could do the job there.

The option was already spent when he was sent down at the end of spring training. (an option is per year, not per transaction) Bailey can go up-and-down all year without impact on Bailey’s option status.

Today the Reds placed on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to 5/17, RHP Edinson Volquez; optioned to Louisville RHP Ramon Ramirez; designated for assignment OF Darnell McDonald; recalled RHP Carlos Fisher (#46) and RHP Homer Bailey (#34); selected from Louisville the contract of OF Jonny Gomes (#31).

Bailey made 8 starts at Class AAA Louisville and went 3-5, 4.57 (45.1ip, 46h, 17bb, 43k, 9hr)…he will start for the Reds tomorrow night vs the Indians.

Fisher made 13 apps for the Bats, all in relief, and went 2-0, 2.00 (18ip, 11h, 4bb, 21k, 0hr)…when he pitches will be making his Major League debut.

In 37g at Louisville OF Jonny Gomes hit .282 and leads the team in HR (9) and RBI (27)…a non-roster invitee to spring training camp, he was reassigned to Louisville the day before Opening Day.

    Wow, big news Travis !

I feel optimistic now. Let’s beat up on the Indians.

    Then look out, NL Central.

I had a spinal tap once and couldn’t sit up, let alone stand up, for 10 days, my head had some fluid drained or something and I couldn’t raise it. The doctors in my family said the doctor who did it sucked but just the same.
