I dunno, I feel pretty good about tonight’s game. It’s Edinson Volquez vs. Josh Geer.
The lineup is below, with the strange move of hitting Ramon Hernandez ahead of Laynce Nix. That’s not the only strange thing about this lineup, but it’s the same type of strange that has been successful lately, so I’m not complaining.
Willy Taveras CF
Jerry Hairston 3B
Joey Votto 1B
Brandon Phillips 2B
Jay Bruce RF
Ramon Hernandez C
Laynce Nix LF
Alex Gonzalez SS
Edinson Volquez P

Good news at AAA as Matt Maloney allowed 1 ER in 6ip…but was not very pitch efficient at 102 and left with the other pitcher allowing 0 ER. Wondering if maybe Maloney might be better suited for long relief? He is a young lefty so it would be nice to have him on the team.
Make that 111 pitches through 7ip with only 1 ER. Maloney is looking better all the time…better than Bailey at this point.
Nick Masset looks like he’s headed to the DL, according to Fay. I bet Viola gets the call up.
It is probably a left then right batter thing with Hernandez. Hernandez has been hitting pretty good this month and he did OK batting up in the lineup replacing Votto.
That’s a bummer about Masset, the guy has been pretty good so far. Hopefully it is nothing too major.
Viola has been mowing people down but hit a bump in the road earlier this week giving up 3ER in less than an inning.
The whole left-right thing is stupid.
This Geer has a funky looking motion.
Is Scott Hairston’s head bigger than Jim Day’s?
Alright, Votto…what are you going to do well tonight?
AQuick and unproductive top of the first.
Oh no.
This sucks
Well, looks like this game is going to be long
Typical west coast turd by the Reds.
Unreal. I honestly think the problem is that everyone is so excited to get to SoCal that they don’t focus on the games. All you read about is what restaurant they’re going to, how much fun the zoo is, etc. And then it’s always this garbage.
A HR to Giles’ Ghost, of all people.
You’re effing kidding me. A double to Eckstein, 0-2?!
Bad Volquez tonight.
And then some.
Is the Reds luck wearing off?
I liked the sprinkles commercial, but I’m over it at this point. At least motorcycle safety week is over.
It could be worse. They could cue up the “Farmer’s Only.com” commercials again…
I have a really bad feeling about this one.
Of course, Nix could tie it up here.
Too much dicking around at Seaport Village, if you ask me.
I don’t know what Seaport Village is, but I REALLY want to go to San Diego. I just asked my wife if we could move there.
Oh man, he almost DID tie it up! To the deepest part of the ballpark.
Well, at least they made him work that inning…another 5+ERA pitcher looking like a 3.0ERA pitcher…we’ll see the second time through the line up.
Of course no Rosales so the energy has decreased in the line up.
It’s pretty nice, Chad. Seaport Village is a (nice) tourist trap shopping/dining area along San Diego Bay near downtown. The kind of place that literally has a shop called “Crazy T-Shirts.”
I’m so sick of Nick Lachey. As someone said here a while back, why can’t the Reds have a real celebrity fan?
This is flipping pathetic :poke:
How long did you live in SD, Chris?
Phillips thinks the ump is on his team
Nick Lachey’s descent from B list celebrity to whatever back-of-the alphabet list celebrity he is now has been quite rapid.
The game sucks already, but at least I finally got an avatar.
Summer of 98, then 99-07.
I hate to admit it, but Lachey is alright with me.
Lachey seems like an alright guy, but why is he famous? Or is he famous?
I just can’t believe Nick Lachey’s fifteen minutes haven’t expired yet.
This home plate umpire is annoying the bejeezus out of me.
The Reds look almost as pathetic as the Diamondbacks looked.
If I hadn’t read this guys ERA I’d think he was going to be the Cy Young award winner this year
Last night and this, I feel like the guy has gotten through 3 innings on about 19 pitches. Hack, hack, hack.
I have absolutely no statistical evidence off-hand that will back up this statement, but it seems like the Reds are seldom successful the first time they face a pitcher.
Volquez keeps trying to paint the outside corner and the ump is not giving in…I’d try something else.
I’m with you, T-Mart. It seems that way.
It’s like they’re not even trying to make this guy work tonight.
If they can’t pull this one off tonight, it’s trouble…Arroyo vs. Peavy tomorrow.
Wasn’t first hit in Riverfront Ralph Garr?
Don’t remember first Reds hit, but first Reds HR was Tommy Helms, I think it was the only one he hit in ‘70.
Re: Volquez keeps trying to paint the outside corner and the ump is not giving in…I’d try something else.
Like taking a start off?
Don’t remember, Bill. I wasn’t alive yet.
:p
So that’s what a hit looks like.
Team Hairiston!!
Come on, Votto.
I don’t know if I’m going to make it to the end of tonight’s game. The late nights this week have exhausted me.
Spending all day building a swingset/playground in the back yard has wiped me out even more. And we’re not even halfway finished.
Bruce needs to sit, he’s in such a rut
Does anyone else think the Ohio Lottery logo looks suspiciously close to the logo for Yum brands?
I’m glad they got a run, but am not really impressed that our 2-4 hitters could only muster up a nickel and dime special.
Small ball, Chris!
And you’re right, T-Mart. Strange.
Oh no, Votto is out of the game.
Votto hits pretty well for a dizzy guy.
I have that stupid “Yeah Yeah Yeah” lottery song in my head now.
Volquez seems to have found a bit of a groove…let’s hope so.
Maybe he was in violation of Dusty’s new “no facial hair” rule. On a serious note, the Reds can not do without him for any measurable length of time.
I hope this is nothing serious. This dizzy thing was the end of Nick Essasky. No where near the talent but Essasky just never could shake the problem.
Nice oppo, Hernandez. Rally Time!
All jokes aside, I really don’t understand why Jim Day is there, if not to hustle down to the clubhouse and get some news on this. (IIRC, the clubhouse is off-limits during games, but one should still be able to get informtion).
Nix-matic!!!
Jeepers.
Nix CRUSHES it!!!!!
That ball was crushed.
Laynce Nix may be better than Chris Dickerson.
If he really is this good, this is a whole different team.
Yeah, Esasky had vertigo. I have a very mild version of that, and I can’t imagine how anyone could play ball with a serious case of it.
“I tell you what, Laynce Nix is going to be hard to get out of the lineup.”
–Marty
I’m not holding my breath…but with all the injuries he has suffered combined with Nix’s prospect status when he was young, there’s at least SOME chance that Nix could surprise everyone and be a decent player for a few years.
Maybe Votto’s meds for the flu bug are the problem.
Wonder if Dusty is happy he listened to the fans and started playing Nix? Would he ever admit it?
Is Alex Gonzalez the “tipping point” for the Reds recent offensive slump?
I vote yes
That sucks about Votto…is this just from the flu he had? I guess he could be dehydrated still or feeling the effects of dehydration.
Dickerson doesn’t have the talent to replace Nix. Nix running into a wall is Dickerson’s only hope of ever getting that starting job back.
If Nix runs into a wall, I feel sorry for that wall.
Maybe Nix and the wall should hold peace talks.
I don’t want a Bump Bailey situation. Though that did work out okay for the Knights.
Nix attended Midland High School in Midland, Texas, where he played both football and baseball. In addition to starting at quarterback for the football team, Nix was named to the All-Permian Basin Baseball Team before graduating in 2000.
Imagine watching him run the QB sneak.
FSOH sure has Jim Day do some weird crap during games.
That “beach” area always scared me to death. I think a kid is going to get creamed by a HR ball someday.
Oh goodness. Jim Day is going to jail.
Maybe Day got sentenced to be as far away from the booth as possible after that little incident with Sean Casey’s visit to the booth a few weeks ago.
I have no clue as to what Twitter is supposed to add to the bottom line, but everyone is crazy for it. FSN Ohio, in particular.
Jim, those type of sentences don’t usually lead to playing in a sandbox.
Marty sounds like he’s giving up on Bruce already. Brantley is the voice of reason. Bizarre.
What did Jim Day do?
I’m starting to believe this “energy” stuff. As soon as Rosales came back in, the Reds took the lead.
That’s another long one.
Bruuuuuce!!!!!
Barruuuce! He’s back in a groove…thank YOU Mr. Bruce!
On cue, Bruce answers Marty!
Jim was doing his thing from the “beach” area in RCF. Thom goaded him into playing in the sand with the kids. The thing is – the camera is like 500 feet away, so to the parents in the area, he’s just a strange man-child with a microphone.
Marty loves nothing more than to give up on people.
Well, he likes “piling on” even more.
Chad, where is our Amazon store?
Temporarily removed when the site had issues. I forgot to put it back. I will get that done.
Anyone read “Born to Run: A Hidden Tribe, Superathletes, and the Greatest Race the World Has Never Seen” by Christopher McDougall? Caught a little bit of an interview with McDougall on NPR today. As someone who is trying to develop a running regime, I am intrigued by what he tells in the book about the Tarahumara Indians and their running abilities.
Never heard of it, Jim. I’ll check it out.
This ain’t good.
Back.
Now Volquez is hurt? Sheesh.
He didn’t even try a practice pitch, did he? That’s no good.
Injuries. This is what kills the smaller market teams. Bailey may be getting the call from Louisville.
What did Marty say about Bruce?????????
“Voltron out with a mysterious injury. Now – over to Jim Day, to talk about fish tacos!!!”
Unless I’ve missed it, we STILL don’t have a report on Votto.
Nope. Just some speculation from the booth, then “moving on.” Again, it’s one thing to be in the dark. It’s another to fly Jim Day across the country and not ask him to report.
I should note: He does know how. His intermission reports on Blue Jackets games are just fine.
Thom: “This guy [Edgar Gonzalez] can hit. They have a hard time finding him a position, but he can hit.”
What could he possibly be basing that on? The fact that he was a 30th round pick, who didn’t make the majors until age 30? (On his brother’s team, in his home town).
Or this career line: .259 .315 .385 .701
Seriously, what could possibly have made Thom think Gonzalez is some sort of Alex Johnson/Kal Daniels type?
http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/g/gonzaed02.shtml
Lincoln ruins Dusty’s plans to use him to get 1st 2 outs vs. RHB and then Rhodes against the lefty…I do feel sorry for Dusty on that one.
Brantley was bragging on Lincoln and what does he do? Give up the gofer ball…on cue :poke:
Votto: mild dizziness. Again.
It’s time to start getting worried.
23 man roster tomorrow again. And that counts McDonald as a major league ballplayer.
Votto with dizziness again and Voltron with lower back spasms.
Nick Esasky’s career was ended by vertigo.
Are the Brewers really supposed to be a threat with this rotation?
Suppan, Gallardo, Parra, Looper, Bush
And Trevor Hoffman’s bones as the closer.
You would think that the Brewers would come back, then again how the heck are the Phillie’s over .500 with their pitching. I guess if you have a line up that can club, you can hang around. Milwaukee’s bullpen doesn’t seem to be as kerosene laden as last year or at least so far.
Thom is bragging on these guys for “not giving up a run,” completely ignoring the fact that they gave up 2 for Harang last night.
That’s why ERA is pretty pointless for relief pitchers. And he knows better.
Judging by his gut, :worried: I bet David Weathers can put away some beer.
He looks fitter than in years past, IMO. But it may just be that long hair.
Same thing on Coco, the guy is perfect in save opportunities, but he has lost two games coming in on tie games.
ugh…
Not this again.
where was that one?
Ugh.
I think Dusty has maybe gone to the Weathers/Rhodes well one too many times.
Thom again living in the 70s. Dude, umps work both leagues now.
Hopefully we’re not in the process of seeing a deviation back to statistical norms
C’mon stormy…augh.
I’m not sure Herrera would get the job done, but I know most of these guys have never seen him.
For all the hype, Weathers and Rhodes have allowed more inherited runners to score than anyone but Burton. Weathers is 50%, Rhodes 40%. League average is 32%.
http://www.baseball-reference.com/teams/CIN/2009-pitching.shtml
I wish I had gone to bed before Stormy came in the game.
Dude is just aiming.
Wow…talk about getting squeezed
Un effing believable.
3 walks…bleh
Thom is bitching and bitching, but that ball was inside. He’d prefer to go on a rant, but the video doesn’t lie.
Weathers kind of lives off guys that swing at that stuff and when they don’t…well things are not quite as successful. The guy totally pitches around anyone that can rake.
Good night. I can’t deal with this.
MLB Gameday suggests that Ball 2 and Ball 4 were on the corner.
And that was a strike??
Gameday liked Herrera’s strike three, but barely…
Maybe Dusty will bring in Harang to pitch a few innings during extras and ruin him for the rest of the season
Wow. That would’ve been the catch of the year.
Please pinch hit for Gonzalez this inning. I don’t care what the situation is.
Gonzalez and Dickerson in crunch time.
Oh, brother.
Hopefully Bud Black went to the Heath Bell well once too many
Get em next inning?
According to GameDay, the ump is calling every pitch that’s even close to being low a ball.
It’s definitely tight.
This road trip could be alternately titled “A Tale of Two Teams
This game really hit the brakes. It feels like the 14th inning.
They played okay tonight, aside from the two geezerelievers.
Did I just see Rosales not running full tilt?
What is going on?!
Our shortstop is Derek Jeter, minus the hitting. Yet all the unearned defensive hype.
Oh, he was out there.
Nuts and bolts
This umpire has the worst K zone I’ve ever seen in MLB
“We wuz robbed” is the theme of the night, I think.
Nice work, Burton. It would be nice to get him back into the 8th inning slot.
I agree. Good luck displacing Weathers.
It’s time we won an Xtra inning game.
Weathers got hosed, Nix is dreamy, and I think I bought some butter off the back of Jared Burton’s buggy last year in Hardin county.
The Reds do have Micah Owings who is going to get skipped a start if this thing gets crazy, that is unless Dusty is holding him back for use as a pinch hitter.
Owings is warming up as we speak. This team is playing with 21 guys now. (incl. McDonald).
If it’s San Diego, it’s time to blow out a starter’s arm.
You cannot stop Henry Blanco, you can only hope to contain him.
The Reds do NOT deserve to win this game. The pitchers have all but given it away
Eckstein is a tuff out
Is he really going to bring Owings in?
I’ve figured out who Burton looks like, he looks like Dwight’s cousin Mose from The Office.
Put Harang back in there.
I just want one rational reason why Micah Owings is warming up in the bullpen but Francisco Cordero isn’t… just one.
It’s either Owings or Janish at this point. Baker done loogyed out the bullpen.
Whew…
Whew!
Big K!!
I keep forgetting that Cordero hasn’t pitched yet. I guess it isn’t a save opportunity.
They said at the opening they might use Owings in the pen one of these two days, as his start wasn’t going to be till Wednesday (and having a week off).
Can’t believe this umpire punched two guys out on strikes.
Nix strikes again.
Nice frozen rope hit by Nix!
all up to Gonzo now…
They would only walk Gonzo with McDonald in the on deck circle. Why wouldn’t Hanigan or Owens pinch hit here?
Why double switch here? Owings is clearly a better hitter than McDonald.
Oh here comes McDonald…we’re gonna win now :tired:
This is “in the box” thinking at its worst.
Owings should hit !
God, this guy is overmatched.
“Hannigan a .310 hitter, Janish a .340 hitter, McDonald a .219 hitter.”
That second strike was a foot and half outside. That was Patterson level ugly.
Dusty is not doing us any favors this weekend.
Who do you you guys think will come out to pitch?!
What the f …..
If you were bringing Owings in anyway, why in the heck did he not hit for himself? That is ‘Castro pinch hitting for Hamilton’ level stupid.
Seriously?
He brings in Owings after all? I know Dusty doesn’t actually think McD is a better hitter than Owings. But the book says you need a pinch hitter, so we got a pinch hitter.
I’m really flippin confused now on not pinch-hitting Owings.
I no trusty Dusty.
My wife is going to kill me tomorrow.
Kinda suprised McD didn’t pinch hit for Nix or Bruce when they needed a right handed bat….
Assume Owings gets the RBI. Then Cordero comes in and blows the save, and we’re headed to the 12th. Then, Owings doesn’t get to make a single pitch in relief.
Can’t take that chance.
very nice play by BP
…and you burnt a decent defensive replacement/pinch runner, the only thing McD can do well, to boot.
I was at this game, which felt like an eternity, but was apparently more than an hour faster than tonight’s.
http://www.baseball-reference.com/boxes/SDN/SDN200705150.shtml
How ’bout ya B.P.?!
GREAT inning by Micah, too bad he doesn’t know how to swing a bat lol :p
Yet equally frustrating. That was the one where Harang balked in the tying run in the 9th.
Yeah, ren. Let’s not use the better pinch hitter because if we take the lead our plan may be screwed. Nice.
That is how Baker would have played it no doubt. You want to see Baker in action, just go back to that Game 6 on the Giants vs. the Angels. The dude totally mishandled his pen in that game and gave away a World Series.
Yet another dumb move by Dumpy Baker…no wonder they can’t stand him in Chicago, when it comes down to the game being on the line he makes the wrong decision 90% of the time X(
Never trust a Dodger!
This does remind me of pinch-hitting Castro for Hamilton, in terms of stupidity.
Owings sure looks better than our bullpen.
Hopefully Bob Castellini has watched the club the last couple of nights.
I’m sick of foul balls by less than six inches.
Man, I’ve got to give a sermon in a few hours. I hope this doesn’t contaminate the message too badly.
It all stems from the outsized importance place on “the closer,” the only role driven entirely by statistics.
Just another example of Dusty playing who he likes instead of who is the best person to put up there. Janish or Hannigan were much better choices…the game was on the line and you can’t win unless you score a run…period.
I was going to ask you about that, Preach. This is a work night for you.
That’s the first time that has been called a strike all night. umpire must be tired as well.
Thom is nuts. Jerry Hairston ALWAYS swings from the heels. That IS his normal swing.
I got a feeling I’m gonna be up for a while longer. Ugh.
No Jim Day in quite some time.
Haha preach. I bet I know another preacher in Grayson Ky that is up praying for the Reds right now.
another 5+ ERA pitcher that the Reds can’t seem to figure out :-((
Thom has been standing on some strange soapboxes lately. Welch doesn’t say a thing until Thom asks him a question point blank, and usually doesn’t get the answer he wants.
…because Laynce Nix is the only guy to consistently work the count deep; it’s just not happening tonight Thom.
Dusty boofed up that 18 inning game last year, when he used Josh Fogg for 2/3 of an inning to no good end.
He’s a man in search of a soapbox.
I give up, fellas. See you tomorrow, unless I’m napping.
This is getting ominous. Owings is pitching the way Harang did in the 18 inning loss to SD last year.
I’m outta here too. I should be the one putting people to sleep, not falling asleep myself
Who could forget last year…Harang wasn’t the same until this year, and Dusty hasn’t learned much since. Hopefully the same won’t happen to Owings. This is the 6th Extra inning game for SD already this year so they are a bit more experienced at it than the Reds.
SD has there AAA team up this series. They really don’t have as much to lose.
Team Phillips in the 13th!
Do NOT hit and run here. Bruce is struggling too much.
Now you can hit and run….
Havoc reversed.
Gregerson is piching on fumes.
And we’ve lowered his ERA to below 5.
Real nice, really nice…I can’t believe they did that
The strike zone has expanded greatly.
Let’s go Nix.
A tired and struggling pitcher, running Philipps was so brilliant.
Well, since Nix batted better than even Votto in this game I guess Dusty will have him sit tomorrow.
OK, I’m outta here for real now. Be blessed guys. Talk with you tomorrow.
Remember last year against the Padres and someone went 0 for 8?
do the reds ever win in extra innngs? this is awful
Yep, Owings will have arm trouble next…unreal
Whew. I guess we’ll have to wait until the 18th inning, for Gonzalez go homer.
Why is this team bad at bunting every year ?
Runner on third with that pitch if a bunt got down.
Great, Rosales, just what we needed.
We miss Votto.
Owings definitely deserves to get a win.
Maybe Owings can hit a HR to win it
Scratch out 1 run, dammit !
Hello y’all, Im in Dayton and my friends have all fallen asleep during the last inning..so here I join this marathon.
Now Perdomo’s ERA is under 5.
Im slap happy at this point, lets play 22!!!
And over 80 pitches later Dusty has learned nothing
Well, that is unfortunate. Im out.
UGH. Very ugly. Why do we always get exposed on the West Coast ?
I can’t believe I stayed up to see the Reds blow it. I didn’t even get to see the game; I had to use MLB Gameday.
I had to watch on Gameday too. Not a good idea to see it thru.
Shut out by the Padres’ vaunted bullpen for 10 and 1/3 innings. Good grief.
Taveras couldn’t match my 0-for-8 last season. He fell an at-bat short.
only 20 Reds in the last 55 years have gone 0 for 7 (or worse) in a game
the last? Our friend Patterson did it May 25 2008 IN SD!!
only 7 Reds leadoff hitters in the last 55 years have gone 0 for 7 (2 of them were 0 for
Patterson (2008), Stillwell (1986), Rose (1970), Harper (1967), Rose (1964), Ruiz (1964), and Kasko (1960)
the last Reds pitcher to pitch more than 5 innings in relief?
a player I don’t even remember. Chris Michalak in 2006
the Reds played 16 innings and only 2 players had multiple hits and the team had only 3 extra base hits. Ouch
I have no problem bringing Owings in to pitch there. The difference between he and Harang is that Harang had already pitched in the series. The problem I have is taking Rhodes out after walking a batter. I have confidence that he can get both righties or lefties out and that is two games in a row where I feel like he got the quick hook. There is no doubt Weathers got squeezed on several calls. The offense was dreadful. After the sixth inning they didn’t even come close to scoring against a mediocre bullpen. I am concerned about Votto. Vertigo killed the career of Nick Esasky (and yes I know Votto is a lot better than Esasky). Hopefully Volzuez just has back spasms and not a pull. You are going to have games where you just get beat, but Cincinnati’s last three losses are all games I feel like they gave away and didn’t get beat. Now we have to face Peavy tomorrow probably without Votto. X(
Taveras and Hairston Jr. went 1-14 combined…terrible. The key to this offense most nights is going to come down to Taveras and Hairston Jr. I’m not sure that bodes too well for the Reds chances to stay with Milwaukee, St. Louis and Chicago in the end.
Also, I noticed Paul Janish hasn’t started a game since May 8th. Hmm…how does a guy who’s batting .345 not start one game when the starting Shortstop has been injured during that whole time? Now Hairston Jr. was really hot. I don’t mind him playing everyday, but he’s not an everyday player over the longhaul…but you’d think Baker would have found some way to get Janish a start because Baker is so adamant about keeping his players “fresh”.
Gonzalez goes 0-6 and now sits at .171…I think Jocketty ends up releasing Gonzalez if he stays around .200. I don’t think Dusty is stupid, but he’ll probably give Gonzalez every chance he can to keep his job and play every day. I’d say 2-3 more weeks is given by Jocketty and if Gonzalez is still hovering around .200 I can’t imagine his usefulness when you have Janish on the roster. You’d hope Janish starts getting a few more starts here and there.
I agree that Janish needs to play some. There is no reason not to play him.
Thank goodness I went to bed at 2:00. Glad I didn’t stay up for that pathetic “offensive” performance.
Is it so hard for Jocketty to DL Masset and bring up some long relief?
WAKE UP CHAD!! WHERE’S THE RECAP!!
