I know he isn’t real popular around here, but I would think that Wilkin Castillo would be much more valuable than McDonald sitting on the end of the Reds bench. With that guy we could use both Hannigan and Hernandez in some more interesting ways as there would always be another guy who could catch.

Hannigan is a real good contact hitter and it would be nice to be able to use him as a pinch hitter quite a bit more, which they cannot do to keep a backup catcher.

  • Castillo has not hit well this season. On the season he has .599 OPS and he doesn’t project well going to the bigs.

now Gomes, Stubbs, or Sutton, they would be more useful than McDonald.

  • What about Norris Hopper?

On another note, I just noticed that Yonder Alonso is on the 40 man roster. It’s not like we’re hurting at 1st, but I wonder if he’ll get a shot this year.

  • Hopper hasn’t done well enough in AAA to deserve a recall
.339 OBP and .762 OPS for a 30 year old corner OF is just not that good

I’m waiting for the Reds to promote Heisey to AAA and then Alonso to AA to see how each does at a higher level. I don’t think Alonso will see major league AB this year but could see him winning a spot next year. And I’m not worried about 1B. I think Votto could play LF.

will be an interesting log jam of left handers with Votto, Bruce and Alonso

Any of the people mentioned above would be more useful than McDonald.
I agree with Earl on (1), but would prefer to see Gomes called up.
When is EE targeted to get off the DL ?
