Sweep, anyone?
Johnny Cueto and his 1.59 ERA take to the mound against Arizona tonight, seeking to give the Reds a sweep in the first leg of this western road trip. I’ll be watching/listening; will you?
Either way, discuss the game here!
Baseball Reference Game Preview

Ok, so obviously we all (maybe not all) want Hairston to remain in the #2 hole as he has been our spark plug this month, but with Nix patroling LF and Gonzo coming back soon to play SS, where does that leave JHJ? And better question who hits in the #2 hole? Rosales (shouldnt happen), B.P (we all know that will never happen)?
A sweep would be so nice. And then a sweep of the Padres.
Does Dickerson have embarrassing photos of Dusty? Why is he getting the start today? Interesting to see the D-Bbacks starting a AA pitcher.
If it was me, I would keep starting Hairston at short then maybe in left field against left handed starters and bring in Gonzales later in the game for defensive purposes, maybe on a double switch. They won’t do that, but they probably should. I don’t doubt Gonzales is trying, but the guy wasn’t that great a hitter when he was healthy. The guy is a K machine and I doubt he will ever get back that 20+ HR power.
That article on the other page I linked states the Reds are 10-6 with Hairston batting 2nd. It is kind of hard to believe that Jerry Hairston Jr. of all people is a sparkplug player, but they did win more last year when he played.
I’m almost OK now with Phillips hitting 4th even though it doesn’t really make sense. This Reds club seems to work quite a bit on George Costanza logic of whatever I think I should do, do the opposite.
I’m sorta looking forward to see this Augenstein kid.. he’s got an impressive minor league record. I want to see if he’s ready for the big leagues or if this is AJ Hinch being too agressive since he was the AZ farm director.
Nix got an o-fer last night, made a good catch and nearly a second amazing one, so henceforth, he is benched.
Maybe Dickerson will catch on some of the Reds hot bats and have a good game, he is due for one.
I guess I should say that I’ve been lurking here for a few years and finally decided to post. Please be nice to me. I’m harmless. I’m an Indy Car fan that posts on trackforum.com under the name of Media Boy.
Tonight’s lineup; minus Votto:
Taveras CF
Hairston SS
Bruce RF
Phillips 2B
Hernandez 1B
Rosales 3B
Dickerson LF
Hanigan C
Cueto P
Hairston should remain at SS as long as he remains hot. If they had DLed Gonzalez then they could have sent him down for a rehab assignment somewhere.
I see Fay now lists the starting line-ups and lists their defensive positioning by using the scorebook numbers.
Welcome, Big Doofus. People here are pretty mild; we just like discussing the Redlegs.
Big Doofus, we welcome new contributions. Only a few of us are hostile.
Tech Talk would be more effective if we had a clue what Gonzalez was saying.
Baseball been…baley baley goood to me.
Reds will struggle with Augenstein tonight since they don’t know much about him. Just my prediction.
“You’re watchin the Ress, on Foh eSport Ohio”
It also bothers me when they do the tech talk about fielding a ball and then they show “highlight reel” material of Gonzalez diving for balls. I’ve got my 15 year old son here with me and I’d rather have them show a basic fielding example from a game. But oh well. I’m still glad they show these.
Man, Votto must have gotten absolutley destroyed by that flu. Makes that homer on Sunday even more impressive.
I guess if Gonzalez can help Encarnacion improve his defensive skills, he worth what we are overpaying him.
Jim Day’s head is larger than Oprah’s.
Jimmy James: LOL
Big D, I agree 100%. Isn’t the point of Tech Talk to teach kids some basic skills?
Welcome Big Doofus. I just started airing my thoughts this week after a month of passive involvement.
I don’t care who hits in the second spot, I just want it to be someone with descent speed. Does Hairston have any get up? Seems like he should or at least did in his early years. You want speed on the base paths when Votto comes to the plate.
Jim Day uses more gel on that lid of his than Ed Grimley. Yeah, I went mid 80s SNL on you y’all. what?
Someone help me understand Twitter. If you post on someone’s Twitter page, do they reply on their Twitter page or your Twitter page?
Lyon, are you Dusty Baker?
I’m just kidding. But yeah, Hairston has decent speed. He did steal 2 bases last night.
No George Grande tonight?
Here’s another thought (while we wait for the game to start)…With Adam Dunn gone, I thought we no longer had a Will Ferrell-look-a-like…but then I saw that interview with Micah Owings.
May Reds HAVOC rule tonight once again.
Yeah, Micah sorta looks like Ricky Bobby.
Love the Ed Grimley reference, don’t ya know?
Yeah, GG hasnt been making road trips frequently this year. This is me not missing him…at all, ok a little bit.
I miss George Grande and the drinking.
Big D, let’s hope Owings can take over Dunn’s prankster role. Marty needs prank called on the Banana Phone as much as possible.
I must say….
I watched a bit of the Dodger-Phillies game tonight. Listening to Chris Berman and Rick Sutcliffe makes one appreciate George a bit more.
Y-City.. no joke! Chris Berman drives me crazy when he calls anything, especially baseball. you can tell he’s out of his element.
I hope when the Reds play the Nationals this year that there is a rain delay and that Dunn calls Marty on the Banana Phone. The best thing about Marty hating Dunn is it gives Dunn the inspiration to torment him.
Homer Bailey pitches a one-hitter through 6 (the only hit should have been an error as Gomes lost it in light) and then loses it all in the 7th and couldn’t get one batter out giving up 4ER and losing 4-3. No BB but gave up 2 HR. That kid has talent but has some head problems. I dunno, may be good to trade him for that missing link in June.
Sutcliffe is about as exciting as plain white bread.
D-backs stadium looks like the Marlins…empty
What was Bailey’s pitch count when he lost it?
I wouldn’t be so eager to trade Bailey. He’s still learning and Arroyo makes me nervous.
How do you take Votto and Nix out? If Votto sick then Nix has to play.
2 pitches in and this kid looks tough!
Great job of watching strikes cross the plate by Taveras.
What was Taveras trying to do there??? That was one of the worst AB’s I’ve ever seen.
Yeah I have to keep Bailey too.
Sutcliffe will put you to sleep if you’re not careful, that’s for sure.
EKYRedsFan,
You got me! I am Dusty! It will take me a while to catch up with you guys. Unfortunately, I can’t get the game up here in Cleveland. I have my XM on every night though.
I agree, Mark. Nix adds power along with the average.
That is the way Sutcliffe used to pitch.
Bailey was 86-58
It’s kind of cool to see this Augenstein kid making his first start. I just hope that someone on the Reds shows him the difference between AA minor league and BIG league.
86 pitches that is, 58 strikes
They need to start hitting this kid and get his head outta the game.
Looks like Cueto has his work cut out for him…should be a pitching match ;-(
Nice little tail on that fastball.
St. Louis lost and everyone else is winning so Reds need a win tonight
We always seem to struggle against debut pitchers, or so it seems.
Just how is pitch location in Gameday determined? Is there a device that detects it or does some guy draw it freehand?
We’ll see how successful he is on his second trip through the line-up.
You have to believe the Reds will adjust to Augenstein after a time or two through the order.. Hopefully it won’t take that long.
Well, that bites.
Well that sucks.
Is Nix sick or hurt?
How many toothpicks does Dusty go through in a night?
Neither I think. Baker’s just giving Dickerson a start, I guess.
How many of these guys played on the D-Backs played last night?
Parra didn’t, Drew pinch hit.. that’s about it, i think.
My guess is Dusty wants to keep Dickerson fresh. Would have been nice if he had waited until Votto is back in the line-up.
Can you guys tell me how I get a picture in my little square?
I’d like to know, too.
That kid made BP look stupid.
Big Doofus now I don’t feel like a big doofus….
That strike from Phillips was rough. Poor guy.
Go to this web site to get the ability to have a picture:
http://en.gravatar.com/
My guess is that you have to have a WordPad account. I have a Blogger account.
Rosales gets hit and runs to first with a smile on his face…unreal
It’s funny how you can go from liking a guy and begging for him to get a shot at starting to being almost nauseated at the mere sight of him.
Give it a ride, Hanigan!!!
Whoa, thats a lil harsh. What happend, EKy?
EKy, you must be talking about Dickerson.
Oh, you were taliking about Chris “Hollywood” Dickerson. I thought you were railing on Rosie already, my bust.
Are you not sick of Chris Dickerson? .197???
Poopie.
Sorry, I should have clarified.
BAM! I now have a picture. It’s me behind a devil’s mask, wearing red stockings!
Guys are pretty pale for Arizona
Let’s see if the gravatar thingy works.
No, I shouldve known better. Thats what 4.5 hours of sleep will get you two nights in a row.
Lyon you need to lighten it up it just looks like a blob to me
cool man.
One more try on the avatar (sorry everyone)
These late games were OK when I was a kid and felt like I was getting away with something staying up listening on the radio. Now they are a pain.
Is that a luchador with a Reds hat?
No doubt, but at least they are on the Smiling Side of The Scoreboard at 1am…thus far.
By the way, EKyRedsFan, I love that picture of Conan. That was one of the best skits ever. Cannot wait for him to come back on the air…with Andy Richter.
Yeah, that picture looked like The Chairman: LaParka.
Well there goes the no hitter!
Johnny “Owings” Cueto
I love me the some small ball.
dookie drag?
Better than “doogie drag” I guess.
HAVOC!!!!
Beatin the blood out of the ball.
Nice, 14 game hitting streak for Willy.
Is Andy Richter coming back with him??
I’m glad Taveras decided to take the bat off his shoulder.
Couple of dinks. Now we need a blast.
Yes, Andy Richter is his sidekick on The Tonight Show. Im stoked!
Hairston sucks at bunting.
Don’t let Hairston bunt.
Harriston needs to work on bunting skills damit
That was great. Welsh is dead on about that bunt.
At least it wasn’t a double play. Thats about the best we can ask from Hairston at this point.
AJ Hinch looks like he has NO idea what’s going on.
Yet another reason why you don’t sac bunt at the drop of a hat. Now there is two outs.
Nacho Libre!
I guess Thom Brennaman isn’t a sabermetrics fan.
Yes!! B.P!!!
Team Phillips!
YES! That was SUPER clutch!!!!
Way to go, BP.
Welcome to Big Boy ball, Augenstein.
Nice job, Team Phillips!!!
I guess the 2nd time through the line-up is a bit rougher for Augenstein.
5 RBI in the series for BP.
Welcome to the Bigs kid :p
welcome to the bigs, meat.
Is Phillips hot or what, I saw that coming.
Ramon Hernandez comes through now.
Has Ramon hit one to the left side of the field all season?
Ramon is quietly getting the job done as well, love it. Bako, ugh.
Good call on that Y-City Jim
Sweep!
If he has, I can’t remember it.
I think this site will get very busy if they keep winning. I just referred four friends yesterday.
Let’s sweep it baby!!
I just got home from playing two softball games…I’m going to go pass out.
SWEEP!!!
Very few, Chad.
Why is Ramirez to first and Votto to left not a viable option? Hannigan has a cannon and Ramirez has been playing decent defense. Then we only have one huge hole in our line-up, the 2hole SS… anyone? I’m sure I’m missing something…
KP,
I like it.
Lyon
How about Cueto?
WOW! What a play there!
Who says JHJ doesnt have range? Another Web Gem!
KP, I don’t think it is an option as long as Nix continues to play like a stud.
Sweet stretch by Hernandez. Very Tony Perez-like.
Wow, nice play.
36 pitches through 3, I llllove it
Who says JHJ doesnt have range? Another Web Gem!
But you are comparing his range to Gonzalez’s range. The Statue of Liberty has more range than Gonzalez.
I assume you’re talkin about Ramon Hernandez… I think that would be a tough sell on him personally.. I could see that later in his career, of course he wouldn’t be as valuable at 1B then.
I’d like to see Volquez with less K’s, and the efficiency of Cueto instead.
I really really dont want A.Go back in the lineup.
Hernandez isn’t in the last year of his contract, is he?
Me either, Jason, but it’s going to happen. Get used to the idea.
Only JHJ’s continued hot streak can delay Gonzo’s inevitable return.
Diamondbacks pull off a very nice DP.
Dickerson with a hit and a walk. I’m sure Dusty’s convinced he’s our every day starter now.
Playing the occasional 1B might be good for Hernandez and save some wear and tear on Votto.
Chad, who will hit #2 when that does happen? Especially with Nix getting LF.
Does Gomes have speed?
Is anyone else listening to MLB.TV? Good grief there is some idiot fan that is yelling and blasting my eardrums when he gets excited….must be close to the mic…probably has a flask or something X(
EKy, that is what came to mind when I saw him getting a start today vs. AA pitcher. Plug him in a day after Nix goes 0′fer so he has reason to plug his boy back in the lineup. Color me cynical, but i can see that.
I don’t think Gomes has HAVOC-type speed.
Dusty fills his card out like this:
1. CF
2. SS
so expect to see Gonzo hitting second for a week or two until he hurts something else.
Yeah, I admit I’m a little cynical towards anything Dusty does, but it’s because things like that aren’t out of the realm of possibility.
Not many have HAVOC speed!
Cueto has retired 11 in a row. This guy has gotten SO good.
Man, you have gotta love Hairston’s play at SS recently.
While he got the runner, there was a demonstration of Hairston’s mediocre arm.
“Dude’s fast.”
Not many have HAVOC speed!
Those that do are on Dusty’s radar screen.
They keep saying that this team is missing Gonzo’s defense. I don’t see how anybody could really say that. There is no way he should go back into the lineup the way the team is playing.
The wheels are coming off for the rookie.
Are they filming Major League 4 tonight? Wow! That was one bad throw.
This team might be better than ‘99.
Let’s pile on the insurance runs!
Yeah, Cueto has become a real joy to watch. He just seems to all of a sudden “got it”. Marty is eating some crow on that one from earlier in the year. Wait, did I say “real joy”? What am I a senior citizen talking about the latest Matlock episode? I need zzz..STAT!
That was awesome.
Willie T really has some acceleration.
Bruce is due. Here it comes…
…or not.
They are missing his defense about as much as they are missing his offense – not at all.
Jim — they’re missing his offense and defense about as much as they were when he was playing.
Darn it
I sure hope Volton can learn a little from the youngster Cueto
Who voted for Owings and Arroyo for lowest ERA at the end of season in that text poll?
I like this team as-is, except for Votto being out. I say EE and Gonzo can stay injured until Hairston gets injured
I’d run EE back out to 3B when he’s healthy and platoon Rosales out in LF with Nix. It’s not like Rosales is a great infielder so why not add the outfield to his repertoire?
What about Janish?
I can’t really argue with that Jim
One hit ball through five. Can’t say enough about Cueto.
I say move EE to 2nd, Phillips to SS and keep Rosales at 3B. And nix Dickerson for Nix. See what I did there?
It’s crazy not to want EE back. Look at his career numbers (and he’s still only a few months older than Votto).
The only players on this team who are likely to out-produce EE over a full season are Votto and Bruce. EE’s numbers are better than Brandon Phillips’, for instance.
EE is going to be fine at the plate. This offense won’t be able to last over a full season without him.
Owings and Arroyo lowest ERA? Not I, I figured it would be Harang or Cueto
I like Janish. He very good defensively and certainly serviceable offensively. You can’t ignore these hot bats though.
How about just having the “youngsters” watch the game?
Good call, Big Doofus.
If you look at EE’s numbers month by month you’ll notice his best months are in June-Aug. it takes him awhile to get going.
Dotson,
Why is it so hard to like EE then?
I don’t necessarily disagree with you, Jim, but I’m not sure Janish is really serviceable offensively over the long haul. He was a pretty poor hitter in the minors.
Great glove, though…and a gun for an arm.
Hello RedLeg Nation. Cueto is dealing, boys. You hear about the Louisville Bats five-run ninth last night? I think Jonny Gomes may be coming for Dickerson’s spot.
http://www.examiner.com/x-6603-Louisville-Bats-Examiner~y2009m5d13-Louisville-Bats-get-a-little-revenge-in-comeback-win-over-Durham-Bulls
StL lost. First place, anyone?
EE has to play 3B over Rosales. I was reminded of how quick EE’s reflexes are when Rosales got ate up by those balls on the fast infield the other night. With Gonzalez working diligently with EE to improve the footwork, I think we will see the throwing improve overall.
It just seems like the energy has changed on this team with Rosales…of course this team can’t last all year without EE
Up until his last two years at Louisville, Janish had demonstrated some decent ability to draw walks though.
Good observation by Welsh regarding that while Hernandez had no MLB experience at 1B, he did had winter ball experience at the position.
EE back to third, Phillips to SS, Rosales to 2nd. Gomes called up to platoon with Nix in LF. Send McDonald and Janish down.
I don’t think it’s hard to like EE at all. He’s my favorite Red, and the most underrated player they have.
He’s off to a terrible start, but that won’t last.
I just bought Saturday night tickets for the Cub’s series, first weekend in June.
This must be really frustrating to face Cueto…it’s nearly unbelievable that he’s only 23.
Thinking about George Grande, was there a time when he was actually good? I ask because the Reds have a record of getting announcers after their prime. One of the examples I remember is when they had Waite Hoyt doing television in the 70’s. He was horrible. One game, George Foster hit a grand slam. Waite went into an explanation of what a grand slam was as if he were talking to a group of five-year-old tee ball players.
Cueto has the makings of a compete game tonight (I type that as Lipton doubles)…
I see Coco getting a save tonight. Pitch count isn’t bad but Cueto will most likely be over 100 before the 9th.
Slam the door, Cueto!!!
Is that Votto with a bat in his hand?? Could that mean a pinch hit, possibly?
If the Reds are competing at the All-Star break, what area of the team you think Walt Jocketty would be most interested in upgrading? Power bat? Middle relief?
This kid has actually thrown 5 less pitches than Cueto…we need Votto-matic back!
Apparently Ryan Ludwick is on the DL now.
Jocketty might be well to focus on the bench.
Need some runs here, guys.
I sure hope its a bat they’d be buying.
If the Reds make any type of move, it should be for a right handed power bat. Probably a left fielder. But I’d like to see what Nix can do first.
No Ankiel and no Ludwick. The Cardinals are feeling the injury bug that has hampered their competition in the past.
Waiting on a call up,
Left Field, Left Field, Left Field? What do you do?
Dickerson, Nix, McDonald, Hairston etc. I don’t know?
Maybe Jocketty can buy some more HAVOC.
LF and SS are the obvious weak spots on the major league roster.
Sheffield? Kidding?
I think we may need one more bat before it’s said and done. I hope Massett and the boys can hold up in the pen. Hopefully the veterans are still going strong in September.
Yeah definitely. Pujols is great, don’t get me wrong. But with Ludwick behind him, he’s even better. Those two are an RBI factory.
…poor mcdonald..
Slick Willy 3-4 tonight. What’s the deal?
LF and SS are the obvious weak spots on the major league roster.
If we had a RH bat to platoon in LF, it would be fine. Gomes could be that RH bat but we won’t know with his butt parked in Louisville. They won’t do anything about SS because they are convinced Gonzalez is great.
Taveras is freakin’ unbelievable!!!
Fast Willy!
I can’t believe he was safe there. I thought he was done.
and the HAVOC conintues
There is some talk in Detroit about them buying out Ordonez so he doesnt reach incentives that trigger the options in his contract for ‘10 and ‘11. Its a longshot this would happen, but grabbing him for a small contract would be ideal. He is in the decline phase at 35, but still hits over .300 and 25 or so HRs.
W’hoo!
JHJ!!! Dont take him out of the lineup!!!
Hair-is-ton comes through again! (I had to get a little GG into this conversation tonight)
The Reds have to ride this hot bat of Hairston as long as it can last.
Fact is, JHJ will get injured before his bat cools down. If he could bunt there would really be NO argument NOT to keep him in the 2 hole.
ole’ Scott S. :tired:
Zimmerman hit streak ends at 30 but the Nats win. They actually have a winning record for the month of May including the tie.
We all have to get a lil GG with it from time to time, EKy.
Ya know, I think this Thom Brennaman/Chris Welsh combo is pretty good.
What a havocy play that was.
Sometimes Thom Brennaman is just a bit much.
Ricky Henderson! Seriously, its about time we stole some bases. And now they’re coming left and right.
I agree.. I like Thom and Chris calling the games. It’s nice to have two broadcasters who know what they’re talking about.
Tampa Bay has 55 stolen bases, 2nd is the Dodgers with 38. Crazy.
welsh needs to chill on the jay bruce platoon shit. dont give dusty any ideas
You’re gonna Juanna get those pitches out of the dirt
HAVOC!!!!
HAVOC strikes again!!!
Bruuuuuuce!!!
Boy, Arizona looks like a bunch of little leaguers.
Now that is creating HAVOC!
There have been some absolutely horrible throws to 2B tonight by the Diamondbacks.
I can just smell first place!
Yeah, you know Jay’s batting vs. LHP is going to come around. That’s something he’s just going to have to work on every off season until he gets it down.
GO REDS!
Cueto must be getting bored on the bench :tired:
Gutierrez: “Check this out, I’m gonna make some awesome designs on mlb’s Gameday.”
The thing I notice about Arizona is how they look so deflated. It looks like they’ve mailed it in already.
Just checking in after Lost. Looks pretty much like the last couple nights. The D-Backs are horrible. Just horrible.
Dickerson with a hit. A bloop, but still a hit.
Where’s Cueto’s pitch count? I’m worried as he sits on the bench cooling off.
A tad bit premature, but when was the last time the reds were in first in mid may?
Love piling on.. Reds never use to do this..
This is going into “awesome mode.”
Okay, this series just keeps getting more and mroe fun. :p
Bruce has a cannon arm and is good in Right field and places a lot of fear into opposing pitchers when at the plate.
The Reds are making the D-backs look terrible…and I love it!
This is keeping me awake. SWEEP!!!
SWEEP! on the road! on the west coast!! SWEEP!
Bags of twenties.
You know even Ted Williams hit 50 points lower against LH pitching. Bruce will be fine as long as they don’t screw with him.
This what a good team does, they go for the kill and just end hope for the opposition.
I think Reds fans would know as we have watched this circumstance 100 times in the last couple of seasons.
That’s 4 pitchers, 1/3 inning.
“The fans are leaving like they’re giving away bags of 20’s” Nice line by CW.
And why is Hinch bringing in a new pitcher to face Cueto???
I’ve been leaning towards going back to GABP during the Cubs series. I probably should get on getting some tickets as if they can stay hot, those games are going to be SOLD OUT.
Love piling on.. Reds never use to do this..
Oh, the Reds used to do this but then the bullpen would allow the opposition to catch up or go ahead.
I can’t explain away Hairston’s recent bunting problems (couldn’d he bunt last year ?), but Taveras and he as 1-2 have been so HAVOCY it’s hard to break that up.
As someone pointed out, Hairston will get injured soon enough, til then play him while he’s hot.
to hell with the cubs
How many times do you think this kind of meltdown happened to the Reds in 2007? I swear that bullpen would fall apart three or four times a week.
We having fun yet? SWEEP! This is awesome. This pitching and now this hitting. Just Awesome.
They have had some good defense too.
Earl, the only drawback to going to a Cubs series is that the ballpark will be more Cubs fans than Reds fans. Man! Are they ever annoying.
Reds were 1 game out in 2006 but were on their way down, not up.
I’ve been to a Cubs-Reds game and it suuuuuuucked. I hate watching the Cubs on TV and I hate watching their fans on TV, so seeing both of them at GABP in person is almost too much to take.
Reds were in first place on Aug. 24, 2006, after game 1 of a west coast trip.
They they lost the last 3 in SF, 3 in LA. Bronson won a Friday game in SD, then they lost the next 2. By Sept. 3, they were 6 games back.
Maybe not as much this time and I saw the Votto 3 HR game last year and it was fun watching the Illinois drunken glee club go home sad.
Res also had a 3.5 game lead on this date in 2002…ahead of the Pirates if you can believe that.
Hey, Big Doofus. Great to see you join the discussion. I just caught up on the DVR, and I went live with the big inning (top seven).
Dang, it’s awesome to beat some of these sucky teams like this.
That west coast trip in 2006 was lethal.
Earl, that 07 team was really tough to watch. The saying went “no lead is safe from the Reds bullpen.”
Yeah, but those 02′ and 06′ teams didnt have this dominant pitching that we now have.
earl: I don’t believe that. Cubs fans are never sad. Except for when Bartman… They just went to the bars. And there’s nothing wrong with that.
Pretty ridiculous that this is Cueto’s worst performance in a month. Man, he is good.
Volquez is nuts!!!
100 exactly
2002 was rough, they held on close till about the All Star break and then everything fell apart with the coup de grace being the annual Junior Griffey writhing on the field holding his leg day.
And his worst performance just went from great to good. I think I can live with it.
Did you guys see Volquez standing with the bat as if the next ball to come into the dugout would be one that he would swing at? That crazy might actually swing and kill Gonzalez and Encarnacion in the process.
Y-City, I must have missed that, how unfortunate.
Nolan Ryan’s a &^CX%@ idiot. He was an absolute freak of nature, so he thinks every Rangers pitcher can be the same. He just remembers himself and Seaver. Not Gary Gentry, Jon Matlack, Frank Tanana, etc.
Dusty’s just as gd stupid. Thom thinks its great that we get to debate this. Not sure how great it will be if Cueto’s on the DL.
It’s fine to push a pitcher past 100 once you know their mechanics won’t go to hell when they get tired.
You got a five run lead, this is a night to get Mike Lincoln an inning and try to get straightened out.
If they aren’t going to use him in a spot like this, then bring up a position player.
Texas won tonight, they will have the same record as the Reds if Reds win tonight.
What in the WORLD is Thom talking about? Sending Cueto out there in a blowout isn’t going to teach him ANYTHING. He’s not going to “learn to pitch,” “learn to pitch out of a jam in the 8th inning,” or any other bullcrap. He’s just going to throw pointless pitches when he’s fatigued, when is bullpen is (over) rested, and when the game is out of reach.
I don’t see why you can’t throw Masset or even Lincoln now.
Dusty took out Taveras and Nix the other night in a blowout. Yet he’s going to run Cueto back out there. Doesn’t even have anyone warming up. Sweet.
Besides that, it is May, you might need that extra inning out of Cueto in August.
If they aren’t going to use him in a spot like this, then bring up a position player.
Yeah. Janish hasn’t pitched for a week.
Hairston. Man. That guy is good (right now).
a 10 pitch at-bat is no small feat. I still say Jerry jr. earns his keep.
You don’t get much hotter than what Hairston is now.
That SOB. I hope BP teaches him a lesson if that was on purpose.
If I owned this team (Phoenix), I’d shut down the ballpark and call it a season.
The one thing I have really noticed about this offense is their willingness to hit to the opposite field.
Make them look like fools for hitting Bruce, can’t stand it when they do that…like we can afford to lose Bruce or Votto
Maybe that idiot will hit some more batters.
The Diamondbacks fans seem to enjoy booing.
BP passed Votto in RBI. It helps, as Welsh noted, to have Joey Votto batting in front of you. It also helps to get hot the week that Taveras and JHJ get on base about 20 times.
So did the reds play as bad as the diamondbacks are playing tonight? Or did i just push all those bad memories out of my head?
GOD Phillips is just awful this year??
BP now has 26 RBI’s.
The Reds have reached double digits with ZERO Homeruns!
Two words – Gary Majewski
If that dude was coming into a game, I knew I was going to end up mad.
wait that was just April look at him swing that bat now! I love it!!
Yeah, take Cueto out and can use Janish in the 9th…or Hairston since he can play everywhere else.
Phillips, Bruce, JHJ, and apparently Taveras are really streaky. Votto is very consistent. EE? Who knows. When the hot guys all get hot at once, you get series’ like the last two. Whey they aren’t – different story. Ideally, I suppose, you’d have BP and JHJ hot at once; and Willy/Bruce the other times.
Are there any sabermetric analysis of the streakiness of hitters?
I don’t know that “streakiness” has ever been defined in an objective way.
What does everyone think of the Voltron/Hamilton trade now?
Seems you should be able to develop graphs and look at the patterns of hot and cold.
Let’s get this game over with. I need to go to bed.
Votto is definitely the model of consistency
What does everyone think of the Voltron/Hamilton trade now?
Depends on what craziness Volquez gets into. They have had several shots of him in the dugout tonight and he looks like he is up to something every time. I think he has had a bat in his hands all night.
Great back-up catcher
Amen on the need to get to sleep, Chad.
McDonald almost did it again.
I just hope Voltron looks at the younger version of himself and learns from it. Cueto is talented but has a Votto-like work ethic and a good head on his shoulders.
At his current rate, Taveras will well exceed 100 runs scored for the season.
When will we part ways with Mcdonald if ever?? any answers
Janish should be in the game in 9th, if he wasn’t already put in.
Yes we’re on the east coast…hurry up and give up d-backs
When are the Reds going to send “DP” McDonald down? I hope he isn’t being kept to maintain chemistry or some similar nonsense.
Gary Majewski, the “Magic Man.” I don’t miss him.
Burton, I was expecting either him or Lincoln. Good decision Dusty, you must be listening to us intelligent all-knowing fans…thank you.
I think we EE comes back they will send Mcdonald down and leave rosales up
Oh the “magic man”…seems like he had a good spring training with someone. He sure had no magic in Cinci
Nice pitch on the corner. Plus, the ump wants to go to bed too.
Actually this doesn’t qualify as a west coast game. The nearest coast is about 300 miles away.
The last I saw, the Magic Man was with Philly in S/T. Not sure if he signed a minor league deal or what.
Majewski is pitching for the Phillie “AAA” club at Lehigh Valley. He is 0-2 with a 4.00 ERA.
Come on Burton… I need sleep
Just waitin for his call-up I see.
Announcers talking about fans having a “mullet”
:p
Quit screwing around, Burton. It’s 12:30 at night here in EDT.
The only thing magic was that the guy could get runners to home in no time flat. If that guy had one big game in Cinci, he had none. It started downhill when they brought him and Bray in for the stretch run and they completely pancaked and when he wasn’t hurt, the dude had an ERA over 7.
The D-Backs had a magic man kind of night.
Fear the mullet…he’s got mulletude
Thank God!
Hernandez showed some of his inexperience at 1B on that play but the DP ball ends the game.
Good night all. Great game and great commenting by all.
20-14. F’n awesome.
And this one belongs to the Reds!
Great game, another win for the REDS, 1ST PLACE SMELLS GOOD!!
One last comment – It’s May 14th and the Reds are in 1st place!!!!!
Majewski had been WORN OUT by the Nats. When the Reds got him, he’d thrown more innings and pitches than any reliever in the league . . . by a long shot. In addition to pitching in the WBC that spring.
Later.
Wasn’t it Majewski who Boden sent to the Reds hangin on by a cortizone shot?
Selig’s still sitting on Krivsky’s complaint about Majewski.
