One of the mail bag questions on this evening’s Pardon the Interruption on ESPN was:
“Reds’ rookie Adam Rosales sprinted around the bases after his first big league homer. For his second, should he keep it quick or slow it down?”
The panel of Tony Kornheiser and Michael Wilbon disagreed to a degree on Rosales’ homerun ‘trot’. Wilbon even went as far as stating that a pitcher would plunk Rosales between 2nd and 3rd base if he continues to do this. Kornheiser said that he was fine with this and that he should continue to do it as an opposite to the homerun trots of Manny, McGwire, and Sosa.
Both compared Rosales’ sprint to that of Pete Rose.
What are your thoughts on Rosales’ homerun sprint?

I think PTI is idiotic and think I’ve already read too much about his home run trot…he’ll probably only to it 20 times in his career…what’s the big deal?
I agree with Bill, it’s tough to take anything PTI says too seriously… That said, who cares if he sprints around the bases? I think that’s a better alternative than slowly walking around the diamond like you own the place ala Bonds/Sosa.
Yeah, I don’t put to much into anything PTI has to say about anything or ESPN as a whole for that matter. Having said that, I love it. The guy is who he is and why can’t people just accept that. I think it’s ridiculous to say it’s showing off when the guy plays the game at 150% at all times, the way he was probably taught to play from little league on. But now he’s a “professional” and has no business “showing up” guys by running hard on every play. Get over yourselves if you think this is in poor taste.
Yeah, PTI is moronic…but I loved the Rosales sprint around the bases.
God forbid anyone hustle, or pretend like they care about the game.
I love the sprint around the bases. I hope he keeps it that way.
I agree with everything that has been said so far about PTI and Rosales. I would hope (in vain I’m sure) that it would actually catch on with the rest of the Reds. It could be their trademark. Then, instead of standing and watching your ball that you think is heading out and preening and posturing, you could be into second or third rather than hardly being out of the batter’s box when it hits off the wall. If some of these guys don’t stop that crap I hope one of them gets thrown out at first.
It’s kind of a dumb thing to be debating, but here I am joining the debate. Of course it’s OK for him to run around the bases, he always runs, even on walks, so he’s being consistent and being himself.
Anyway, he’ll keep doing it and it’s fun to watch.
I don’t think pitchers will mind. They dislike the opposite: a guy admiring his HR. Scott Rolen is old school, after he hits a HR he puts his head down and runs (not as fast as Rosales of course) as if he’s embarrassed by what he just did. Once Jim Edmonds admired a HR -for about a second – off Carlos Zambrano, who was incensed and loudly cussing at him the whole way around the bases. One thing he said was: “Do it like Rolen !” Afterwards Sammy Sosa (an expert on the subject) tried to calm down CZ by explaining that a hitter likes to watch his HR, it’s not about showing up the pitcher.
This reminds me of the movie Rudy where Ara Parseghian says to the QB who’s tired of Rudys nonstop motor, “You just summed up your entire sorry career here in one sentence! If you had a tenth of the heart of Ruettiger (plug in Rosales here), you’d have made All-American by now! As it is, you just went from third team to the prep team! Guys like Rosales make other guys feel like they’re getting shown up because he’s all heart but half the talent, a lot of guys wish they could love the game that much. He may not be a future hall of famer but while he’s here I hope he plays like he’s “walking through hell in a gasoline suit” lol.
Someone should plunk Mike Wilbon. As far as him “continuing to do this,” Rosie’s no slugger so no need to worry. It’s not like this is a gimmick. From everything I’ve seen and read about the guy, that’s just who he is. Wilbon is a tired, old Cubs fan so this is typical.
I think Rosales is annoying. All of that “hustle” is a waste of energy that could be used for more important times during the game. The human body is not an infinite source of energy.
What’s even more annoying is how Reds fans eat it up. They pretty much ran a superstar and potential HOFer out of town because he struck out too much, but they embrace this “scrappy” goof because “it looks like he’s trying.” Nevermind that he’s looked pretty clueless at the plate recently or that he’s a GIFC machine and that his defense is subpar. He runs out to his position, so he’s A-OK!
Yeah, what Daedalus says. Every syllable.
And “home run” is two words. Always has been. always will be.
As long as he doesn’t do what Ryan Braun does sometimes I don’t care, though if he could hit them as often as Braun I guess I wouldn’t care too much either way
i’m ok with the sprint around the bases, running out the walks, etc. i mean, it seems genuine with this kid. i’ve never seen someone so excited in the dugout EVERY TIME his team scores a run. so if that’s who he is, why not? he doesn’t seem to be doing it to show anyone up…
dude has (in my opinion) somewhat marginal talent, but he really is a joy to watch (well, on offense at least. his defense leaves a bit to be desired). basically, we’ve got a charistmatic version of j-kepp running around who doesn’t hit quite as well. fine by me, i suppose, so long as we aren’t counting on him to start long-term.
I actually agree with daedalus and Mr. Redlegs. It’s annoying at best in my eyes.

No Hall of Famer’s on this list?
Having a hard time…

dunn got a bum rap in this town which he only deserved part of. no doubt. not sure he is a future hall of famer – that skill set tends to erode pretty quickly in the early 30s for that specific type of player. but point taken, nonetheless. he’s better than what the reds have been running out there this year. but he’s also more expensive. and since this has been beaten into the ground over the last few months, i’ll drop it.
well, one more thing: i was excited when 700 canned daugherty, but i just heard lance mcalister about an hour ago saying that the team would be better off playing 8 guys than having dunn, or that having a cardboard cut-out was better than having dunn in the outfield. so i guess i will continue to not listen to local sports radio for a year or three.
Keep in mind the reason PTI probably talked about this is that it is a funny clip to watch and discuss. It is pretty funny and most probably most people outside Cincy or St. Louis never saw it happen.
Rosales plays at full out and I love watching him play, but it has caught him a couple of times on the basepaths. It is cool to see a player that die hard. Freel was pretty gonzo when he came up too, so hopefully Rosales doesn’t end up hurt (or at least plays with a bit more of a head than Freel would at times).
@jdarts84
Best. troll. post. evah.
I’m not really on either side, but it’s kinda silly to suggest the Reds wouldn’t be better with a certain unnamed left fielder who’s been hitting to the tune of .311/.450/.660.
The Reds’ also have the 5th best ERA in the NL. I’m sure that doesn’t make any difference as to their winning record…
One dimensional players aren’t Hall of Famers regardless of the dimension.
If Rosales hits enough HRs I could care less if he crawls around the bases. To think sprinting around the bases is showing up a pitcher is absolutely stupid.
This reminds me of the movie Rudy where Ara Parseghian says to the QB who’s tired of Rudys nonstop motor, “You just summed up your entire sorry career here in one sentence!
Wasn’t that Vince Vaughn?
Oakland had a winning record in 5 of 14 years while Jocketty was employed there. Of those five winning seasons, four were huge seasons…three World Series teams and an ALCS appearance. He lost big three of his final four seasons there.
As for Rosales…I’m glad he hustles, I find it entertaining and it’s good for the kids. He’s the kind of guy we all want to do well, but he’s not a good fielder, and he’s not a good hitter…I think he’s an ideal bench player and he’s been groomed that way.
PTI is a stupid show with two idiots who yell at and over each other. If I wanted to hear mouth breathers yell at each other, I’d listen to WLW.
I find it funny how someones a troll for saying something that many, many seasoned baseball minds find to be reality. Is Marty Brenneman a troll for saying that the LF and overall outfield play is so much better now without Dunn or Griffey out there? J.P. Ricciardi must be a troll to for saying what many others weren’t willing to just come out and say. Yet the guys that find Dunns numbers to be AMAZING are just “bucking the trend” of the bias media. The fact is that most GM’s and scouts don’t find Dunn all that enticing, that’s a fact. And for any “Dunn troll” that thinks he’s a hall of famer, you’re out of your mind. Arizona had no desire to re-sign him, and Dunn was such a hot commodity on the free agent market it came down to frickin Jim Bowden (who would probably have signed Rosie Red away from the Reds had he not been fired) to give him a spot. Scouts watch players play the game, fans like to throw out numbers they find online that only tell half the story. Hence the ridiculous love affair with Adam Dunn by wanna be sabermatricians.
Yeah, what jdarts just said. Every syllable.
@jdarts84
it was more the “That statement alone takes away any credibility you have to even discuss sports in any capacity.” and the “Do me a favor and go tighten up your baseball knowledge before you post again, thanks.” comments than your actual opinion that qualify you as a troll.
And I would be careful not to confuse the impact on the economy on baseball (or rather, the perceived impact) with the demand for Dunn. Kudos to him for holding out for what he thought he was worth.
But we’re just beating a dead horse here. Let’s enjoy the good times while they last.
“And by the way moron.” We don’t need that on this blog.
Next time I have to teach about “post hoc ergo propter hoc”, I think I will use the logic of Dunn-haters as an example.
I liked Dunn and was disappointed when they traded him. HOWEVER, I really like the dynamic of this team. I could care less if Rosales sprints his HR trot, but I do care that his enthusiasm has been infectious, most notably seen in the recent play of Brandon Phillips. So that’s a good thing. Plus, I really enjoy watching Micah Owings bat. He is a nice weapon to have (5th starter/PH). So if it took losing Dunn and shedding his salary, so be it.
BTW, Nix has been a welcomed surprise in LF. I hope he can keep it up.
Yeah, exactly what pasha and pinson said. Every syllable.
It’s not your opinion about current or former reds that make you a troll. It’s the manner in which you discuss them.
Thanks pinson, pasha, and greg. As a relative newbie to the site, I wasn’t sure what latitude there was for that kind of posting… I know that it’s specifically banned in the terms of service. But, one of the things that makes this a fantastic site is that by and large it’s a gentleman’s board where arguments are discussed intellectually (I mean, you’re not going to see “post hoc ergo procter hoc” on too many fan boards) and not with words like “moron.” I’m constantly impressed at the lack of trolling on this site. Props to the editors and the posters that make it go.
Wow, haha I see us driving on the energy Rosales has
its making us a better team… hey and if it aint broke, don’t fix it.
we had no energy the last few years, no one to push it, now we have a young clubhouse and driving on good energy, good vibes.
and that helps, on any kind of team.
When i played basketball, one of the teams i was on, was full of self centered egotistic guys, the team had no wins. but the team i was on before that, was full of guys with great attitudes and high spirits, and team work, we only went 7-5 (3 losses by 3 or less points) but we were a team thrown together without ever meeting eachother before hand. all the teams we played, had been together for years.
So it shows with good attitudes and good team work, any sports team can be great…
thanks

Sorry it took so long, but I hadn’t been following this thread.
Minus the name-calling, though, I love the spirited debate.
For what it’s worth:
I love Adam Dunn AND I love Adam Rosales’ sprint around the bases/general enthusiasm. I’m not sure where that places me on the spectrum discussed in this thread.
Rosales has two speeds; stop and “full speed ahead, cap’n.” We need that.
That said, what happens when a Cub plinks him? I think the answer involves some sort of fun gathering.
Yea, Cincy fans are alone in undervaluing certain atributes and overvaluing others.
I love Adam Dunn AND I love Adam Rosales’ sprint around the bases/general enthusiasm. I’m not sure where that places me on the spectrum discussed in this thread.
Somewhere between “moron” and “mouthbreather”?
Redlegs – the term “homerun” has made its way into acceptable use and has been that way for a long time. Calling someone out for not putting in the inefficient space is clinging to archaic modes of thinking about language that were developed during the age of colonialism by some elitist Brits who sat around with nothing better to do than try to put rules together so their “uncivilized” subjects could speak their “civilized” language. Language is not static – it’s constantly evolving, and the term “homerun” is more efficient, which is especially important given today’s microblogging culture of limited characters. Bet you didn’t know microblogging was now a word. Your spellcheck will underline it. Your spellcheck will underline spellcheck. Both are generally accepted as correct.
If you want to get technical, it should be “base-ball.”
Even the Brits are getting rid of a lot of their hyphens and spaces between words. It’s 2009.
As for the rest of the nonsense that went on in this thread, I’m glad I didn’t see it.

@ daedalus— I stand corrected. Not how I meant it, but it’s undeniable. My apologies to any and all.
