Joey Votto's HR Yesterday
The Reds head out west to begin a six-game road trip tonight in Arizona. Bronson Arroyo will make his first start since that disastrous outing against Milwaukee last week. The D’backs will counter with Jon Garland.
The Reds have been looking better and better lately, and they’ve been performing well on the road. A good performance on this road trip could be very meaningful. Discuss it here.

Good news from AAA. Matt Maloney mows down 10 with 1 BB and 0 ER and 4 hits against a team (Yankees) that hit above .300 before this series. The bats have shutout this team through the last 23 innings after ending the 7th tonight. What does that say about the Reds pitching depth?
Great picture!
I saved that picture to my computer…would look great on my desktop
I’m going to post some more pictures from the weekend when I get time. Snapped some decent ones.
Really want to see a good start to the road trip tonight.
I was fairly negative about the offseason, but I can’t believe how much I have been looking forward to the games the past month. Will be obsessively updating computer tonight.
Make that 26 innings straight the AAA Bats have held the Yankees scoreless in…the best minor league team this year.
Need a win tonight!
:clown:
Good start.
I like this game so far…and here’s Votto-matic!
Two batters, two hits! THat’s my kind of start!
How good is Votto? They’re pitching around him in the first inning. Wow.
Good start so far!
Chicken!
Bases loaded, no outs, top of the first. Great start.
Nice shot of BP adjusting his cup there!
Phillips didn’t swing at the first pitch – that’s a good thing too!
Mr. Clutch.
BP DP.
That sucks. X(
and Phillips swings on second pitch…sigh :emotion:
Hope that doesn’t come back to bite us in the butt.
Bases loaded, no outs, and they can only manage one run. Very disappointing.
Oh well, we have a lead. Let’s keep it!
well, at least they got 1 run out of that…
Oh dear…cross your fingers, Arroyo is either on or very off.
Felipe Lopez. Always liked that guy, but I think I’m the only one.
:emotion: :poke:
Arroyo sporting a 7.15 ERA… That’s not pretty.
It’s nice to finally feel like the Reds can beat any team they face. It’s been a while.
Felipe with a leadoff hit. I’m really hoping for a good outing by Bronson tonight. We need it.
Minor Leaguer Scott Carroll on Dan Patrick today talking about his drug suspension. Pretty interseting and he might have gotten screwed. Check it out: http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/danpatrick/
D-backs confessing their man-crush on Votto
Yes, Lyon, it has been a while. Feels good.
I’m confessing MY man-crush on Votto.
Rosales struggling on defense. I bet he goes back down when EE comes back.
82 mph fast ball
I haven’t mentioned it in a while, but I wanted to note that I hate the Cubs.
Stupid Cubs!
The Reds have solid chance to take the Cubs this year, don’t you feel better? I hope Rosales stays, perhaps EE or Gonzo will remain injured. I thought defense was Rosales’ strong point?
Wouldn’t that be Stupid Cubs. I thought that was the rules.
Oh yeah, that’s right. Stupid Cubs.
Hernandez is slow. He should have been out but not by 15 feet.
I was fairly negative about the offseason, but I can’t believe how much I have been looking forward to the games the past month. Will be obsessively updating computer tonight.
I feel exactly the same way. I’ve been really looking forward to the games the past couple of weeks. I was thinking about it, and I think a lot of it has to do with talking to you guys during the games. It’s been a lot of fun so far – thanks everyone.
Hernandez in slow motion
Chad: Any chance you can email me a full-res version of that picture? I would like to blow that up 8×10 (or even bigger).
That was easy.
I’m not sure why anyone would know this, but do any of you guys have any idea what number Mark Berry is wearing this year?
If you see him tonight, let me know. He wore 55 last year, but Hernandez is wearing that number now.
And yes, I have a reason for needing that information. To be revealed later.
41
That was fast. You’re the man, Mark. Thanks.
Ryan Freel is in Eric Byrnes uniform.
I’ll email it to you right now, Chris.
Good Lord, what an imbecile.
I was reading the Adam Rosales comment thread as I Byrnes idiot his way into an out.
Thanks, Chad.
I played really, really hard because (1) I was brainwashed on Pete Rose and (2) I had no talent. But the Cult of Hustle, especially in Reds Country, can really get out of hand.
Yeah, that was a quick inning, would have been nice to make Garland work a little.
I take that back about Rosales…not good.
He makes EE look like Brooks Robinson.
Those jerkoffs could’ve gotten out of the way so Nix doesn’t kill himself.
By the way, watching Dye butcher a fly ball in the Indians game has cooled me a little on the whole him for Bailey concept.
You can see how Nix destroyed his shoulder in Texas.
Saturday night they showed a blooper film between innings with guys running into fences. I wonder if they used that since it was the Cards and Ankiel had practically broke his neck during the week. The Cards fan sitting next to me got fired up about that.
Pitcher hits better than #4 guy, :poke:
I have a dream to make a million dollars in-game entertainment packages to major league teams – customize video and promotions to replace (1) the same tired blooper reels starring Lenny Randle blowing a ball foul; (2) godawful video dot races and shell games; and most importantly (3) “Clap Clap Clap yo hayends.”
If you count Owings yesterdaqy the pitcher have the last three games.
Another example of “being aggressive” = “being stupid.”
That was going foul.
Now that is a nice bunt.
Score before Phillips gets up!!
It’s a billion dollar idea, Chris.
Got the pic. Thanks, Chad.
By the way, and I apologize if someone already thrown this out, but on the book front The Republic of Pirates by Colin Woodard is a good quick read. Reads like a novel, but has some good historical detail.
Harris”ton” earning his keep!
Where is the power coming from?
Thanks, GRF. I can buy that book for $1.79 (plus shipping). Or I can get the Kindle version for $7.96.
I am still waiting for my cost savings from electronic media.
Votto-matic time!
Let me guess, Chad. The Reds Race was close until the leader rounded third and got distracted by Gappers Skyline Wagon? Am I the only that notices this very predictable end to every reds race these days?
Ok, that works.
Maybe that he why he couldn’t bunt yesterday. Power hitters don’t bunt.
Wow, Hairston is killing the ball lately.
What’s Giovoni Soto doing this year?
Way to be, Hairball!! A bunt yesterday in the 10th still wouldve been nice, but way to be!
I keep hinting to my wife that I want a Kindle, but so far she hasn’t taken the bait and bought me one. The DX looks like it will be nice, but it would take a while to save the $500 it will cost.
Is Votto ever a soft out?
What is the betting line on Phillips here?
With respect to the between innings entertainment my wife got to be “Polly Perch” and run the bases at a Lake County Captains game. As lame as it sounds, my kids (and I) still laugh out loud about it a year later. They could do better, but there is still some nostalgia value to the classics.
Maybe he will swing and fall down.
Looks interesting, GRF. It’s on my list now.
That DX may be a little unwieldy, though. I wish Amazon had a way to let people take a look at a demo version. They should make a deal with Costco or someplace.
My mother-in-law is visiting and has a Kindle 2. Even nicer than my Original.
B.P are you with me?! Nicely Done!! Get Some!
Phillips giving himself a high five
Am I the only person who misses Chuck?
Phillips hustling and HAVOCing.
Marty and Jeff are just hammering the D’backs for acting like they don’t even care.
Self High Five!!! for Team Phillips!!
Yeah, Marty grabbed that mic hard to so he could slam these D-Backs.
Yeap Kurt.
Next Tuesday we will know the fate of “Chuck”…
Welsh is giving all sorts of praise to Dusty Baker for not publicly ripping the lazy players, and that BP was the most fined player last year.
My thought: That approach didn’t work too well, as BP is still prone to hustle lapses.
Good Inning!!
I think I’d pull Byrnes if I was Hinch. He needs to do something to shake that bunch up.
Justin Case, indeed.
As for the electronic book issue, I confess the economics make no sense to me. Plus, I am so used to carting my torn up paperbacks around I am not sure I could be trusted with a Kindle.
Ugh, that Justin Case is going to get old quickly.
Votto was second in 2009 NY ROY voting.
Did you know?
Voltron was 4th, and Bruce 5th.
http://www.baseball-reference.com/awards/awards_2008.shtml#NLroy
Lopez is still only 29 years old. Seems like 7-8 years ago I was watching him in Louisville.
I’ve got the Kindle 2, and I love it. Yeah, the economics of the e-book business are still sorting themselves out, but I’m pretty happy.
I don’t think the DX would appeal to me. Newspapers look just fine to me on the regular Kindle, though I imagine the whole point of the DX is going to be the ability for newspapers to advertise.
GRF: Two big advantages (besides the simple thrill of gadget buying). (1) Instant, anywhere purchases; and (2) library portability. I can take 50 books on a plane with me; or buy a new one while I’m sitting on the tarmac.
Volquez was 4th in that ROY voting, and he wasn’t even a rookie.
Yeah, these baseball writers are brilliant.
Nice pick, Nix.
Nix earning his keep too.
Chris, you’ve absolutely hit on the reasons why I love my Kindle. Always have a lot of books with me, and I can always get another one if I want.
Was Byrnes a product of the juice a few years ago, or does he need a change of scenery. If the later he could be a nice right handed platoon in left.
Bronson over 50 pitches, at this rate he is not going to go very deep here.
Yep, there goes Arroyo
That home run just hit my house
Well, if you’re going to give up a HR…Upton would be the one on the d-backs team
I keep hearing rumors about “iPad” – wonder if Apple will really do it. The articles I’ve read talk about having to have a Verizon plan though. The last thing I want is to send more money to Verizon. Maybe I’ll break down and by the Kindle 2.
Free E2!!
I guess we should stop screaming for Rosales.
Elmer Rosales.
Ummmm…Rosales? I love ya, guy, but what’s up with that defense?
That first ground ball he missed ate his lunch and dinner.
Just noticed that Bruce has as many assists this year as he did all of last.
Chad, any luck with getting the man, the myth, the legend Mr. Jim Day for that podcast?
Zimmerman continues hit streak tonight…wonder if the Nationals and Reds can do another switch of players? EE for Zimmerman? Layance NIX!
Whoa! That was a Bomb!!
Wow.
Niiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiixxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
Laynce Nix!
Where would that have landed at the GaBP?
I’m listening on the radio. How hard was Nix’s ball hit?
ROOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAALLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS
I lose/destroy cell phones with grim regularity, so I fear what I would happen with a hundred downloaded books on a kindle. I can spill coffee on my paperbacks with nothing but a grossness factor. May have to join the 21st centurty here soon, but not sure I am ready yet.
Whoa! All Smiles in Toledo!!
That makes up for the error
Rosales! Another sprinter.
Way to make up for that blundering defense, Rosales!
Nix and Rosales back to back ?!?! Havoc indeed!!!
Yeah, Jason, we’re going to get the Jim Day thing worked out.
Sprint the bases on that homerun Adam!
Dick “Dr. Strangeglove” Stuart Rosales.
I know I am dating myself here boys.
Votto getting some mention on Baseball Tonight now…of course, the next second they show Arroyo giving up a homerun.
Chad, I can’t believe that wasn’t you guys going to Cincy. There must be more Reds fans down your way than you led me to believe.
This is fun, great stuff.
I love Rosales….he’s the best!!!
Nix – 433 feet
Rosales – 424 feet
Nix looks like he could some ass.
Nix has a huge head.
Kurt, thx.
There are still a few of us, EKy. Second only to the Braves, probably (and maybe the Red Sox these days).
Does anyone else get the feeling that Hairston may be a switch hitter?
I wish Rosales was better defensively. If he was, he might be able to keep 3B for a while.
I meant to say Nix looks like he can BEAT some ass.
Votto-Matic!!!
Votto!!
i know his family, he definately is not
The “Clutch Canadian” comes through again.
Is the D-Back manager old enough to shave?
Votto continues to be the man.
There are two quotes above the water cooler at work:
“Mandrake, have you ever seen a Commie drink a glass of water?”
and
“And as human beings, you and I need fresh, pure water to replenish our precious bodily fluids.”
pshh.. the Red Sox. I’ll never understand how people who have never been to Boston and don’t get to watch them on a regular basis can cheer for them.
There called front runners, Eky.
If I have to watch close ups of Papelbons pre-pitch face one more time I am going to projectile vomit.
Same goes for out of market Steelers fans.
Well I ain’t one of those.
By the way, if Taveras keeps getting on like this, he is going to worth this contract.
Looks like Lopez has a few more Tats.
Same goes for out of market Steelers fans.
Don’t go hating on Steelers fans now! Ok, to be fair, I live in PA so that’s expected that I’d be a Steelers fan – it’s the Reds fan in me that’s odd to most people!
I think in-market Steelers fans are touched in the brain.
Did you hear that last Cincinnati Cyclones ad? “The only professional playoff team in Cincinnati.” Kindof a jab there, wouldn’t you say?
Ugh, Steeler fans really are the worst, the worst Jerry. Mullets, Camaros, Marlboro Reds, Jean Shorts, Hard Rock Cafe T-Shirts and a Steeler Cap. Come to Toledo, Ohio and you can have see this and more at every turn…and dont forget Tony Packos and The Mudhens!
Wow, I really miss Felipe.
Oh yeah, caught that Cyclone ad over the weekend. Def a jab.
A jab but true.
Sounds like an excuse to me Welsh.
I have a feeling I shouldn’t get in a football conversation here O:)
My gosh. Has he ever played infield before?
Another thing I don’t understand… swimming pools at ballparks.
1. Isn’t that dangerous? Couldn’t you easily get nailed in the head when you’re not paying attention to the game?
2. If you want to swim, save your money and stay home. You obviously don’t give two craps about baseball.
3. If your kids want to swim and you want to go to the game, get a freakin baby sitter. Don’t rent a pool at Chase Field.
Bronson has had to pitch an extra inning and a third due to Rosales defense. Couldn’t turn the DP, an error, a hit that should be an error and that last one.
Right there with you CeeKeR. In my defense, I have a Bubby Brister joursey to prove I was a fan in the dark days.
Yeah, Ceeker. Toledo is for some odd reason a Steeler Town, but if you ask them to name 5 Steelers 80 out of 100 couldnt do it, but theyll spend $500 on a leather steeler coat and talk smack all day and night…but if you didnt notice im a bitter bengals fan and loathe most everything in the town Ive resided in over the last 3yrs.
lol @ jean shorts. Good call jason. I like to refer to them as jorts. My wife and I always look for jorts sightings when we go out. And in Eastern KY, we get a lot of em.
I knew there would be a Steelers fan in here.. Sorry Ceeker, I’m just another Bengals fan with a success grudge.
Go Brownies!
“success grudge”…I will use it, thx.
Steelers fans are bad, but to be honest, there’s some really disgusting rabble parading around Paul Brown Stadium, too. I am picturing that area near the southeast end zone, orange and black Zubaz, and a lot of shouting.
You gotta throw some blame at Rosales here. I love the kid, but it’s his fault.
Harriston got smoked in a bad spot.
Chris, I totally agree and 2 points for Zubaz reference.
Isn’t Chad a Steelers fan? I try not to hold that against him though. Being a Bengals fan is hard. I really have no hope for them until Mike Brown is no longer involved.
Welsh finds Votto and Mike Jacobs attractive. He said it, not me.
How many ways can Jerry be injured. I was thinking the other day that Hairston had the severe flu at the end of spring training after playing in Mexico.Think he was a swine flu carrier?
Alright, we are all friends here so it’s ok! Actually, I’m one of the few Steelers fans that actually roots for the Bengals (at least when they aren’t playing the Steelers). I love me some rivalry games…Steelers/Ravens is a nasty one, but I’d like to see Bengals/Steelers rise to a similar status.
Welsh needs to get the Just For Men out, he looks like he’s aged 5 years since last season.
There a delay? MLB and ESPN have not updated for awhile.
Mike Brown seems like he does whatever he can to screw the Bengals so long as he makes money doing it.
Ok, is Jim Day hanging out in the kiddie pool? Creepy.
Good thing Adam is hitting.
Rosales likes to make up for his errors.
Well, the Reds aren’t playing the Mets, so don’t hold your breath for an update.
Can’t believe he is leaving Arroyo in.
Ugh, Mike Brown. What can I say that hasnt been said a million times? Just, ugh.
Yeah, I was “watching” on ESPN as well but it just stopped. Yahoo has the update – 7 to 4, Rosales on 2nd.
4 hits for Taveras? Really?
Willie T 4 for 4
I’d send him on the first pitch.
Wow. Nice night for Taveras. I bet he’s played a ton of games here.. not that that has anything to do with it.
ESPN is seriously getting worse and worse with the large market only coverage not only on TV, but on radio. Its disgusting. Im loving the MLB Network, though there is this anchor with this fake sports voice that is annoying to put it lightly.
HAVOC
WT with .355 OBP coming in tonight.
Are you talking about Greg Amsinger? Because, yeah, he’s annoying. MLB Network is quality overall though.
Willy’s been really impresive lately, I’ve gotta hand it to him. Now if only he’d start stealing bases…I wanted to see 100 stolen bases from him!
Despite the fact they let him sacrifice, I am really hoping they pull Bronson here. After last inning, I think he is done.
Votto is an RBI machine.
Votto.. man.. that guy is awesome.
Yes, Amsinger.
Anyone else really starting to like this team?
Votto is just getting ridiculous.
I can get sick of Thom and Chris but it sure is great to be Georgeless tonight. Lets take a drink for old times sake.
These bats are starting to catch up to the pitching, love it!
Yes, that swing by Votto was just awesome.
Phillips did that on accident haha..
I’d be surprised if they pulled Bronson after 5 innings with this big of a lead.
How about the offense all of a sudden? I like watching a team that can hit AND pitch!
A.J. Hinch looks lost.
I really am starting to like this team. I look forward to every game now with those “We’re probably gonna lose tonight” feelings getting smaller and smaller.
Good to see the players on the bench actually talking baseball.
Exactly, Im really starting to have a feeling about this team.
Bruce is scuffling tonight, but given everyone else’s success it’s easily dismissed.
.376 OBP for Willy right now.
Just me is it time to get him out?
The offense has been unbelievable lately.
If they can keep Bronson in there and save the bullpen without letting them get too close, then I’d keep him out there.
This game is awesome.
Fast Willie is 5-5. Unbelievable.
5-5 for Taveras. Nice!
Lot of pitches… Not worried about this game, but later?
13 runs, 17 hits. I like it a lot.
Later when? Bronson’s an innings-eater type of pitcher. If it were Edinson Volquez at over 100 pitches last inning, he’d be out. But like Welsh and Thom were saying, in the past week or so, the Reds have had a 14 inning game, a 1 inning start, and a 10 inning game. They’ve gotta save that bullpen for later and Bronson’s the best guy to do that.
plus Bronson only went 1 inning last start don’t forget.
Listen to Thom.. he’s a regular ol’ Billy Mays for Reds.com.
Valid points Eky and CeeKer, I will climb down off the ledge.
Are Chris and Thom really talking about Marty’s speedo?
Speedon’t.
And just when you thought Bronson would end today with an ERA under 7.00.. :-((
I’d like to see Thom try to grow a Billy Mays’ type beard. Can’t be done. Only Chuck Norris can compete with Billy in that category.
No joke, the Billy Mays beard would be something.
Hope those people are having fun in that stupid pool.
Long at bat there by Hannigan, good work.
I am a fully paid member of the Daniel Ray Herrera fan club.
I am really enjoying this game. They just put the hammer down and kept it down.
I am also getting a good feeling about this team – one I haven’t had for several years. Even when they were blathering on about the 2006 team “being in contention” in the second half, you knew those teams had no chance.
This bunch isn’t perfect, but I can see them playing at more or less this level all season. Votto and probably Willy will hit a little worse, but there have been a lot of guys underachieving.
Side note: The Reds are getting real healthy tonight on the Pythagorean record front. Going in, they had scored 132 runs, against 138 allowed, predicting a 15-16 record. If this holds up, they’ll be in the black.
But more important, they’ll be 18-14 and in third place.
I agree, this was a good game. With good pitching, the Reds have a chance to win every game, that isn’t something that they had back in ‘06, or even in ‘99. It’s much too early to get overly excited, but at the same time, the season is old enough that the good things the Reds have done so far also can’t be ignored or discounted.
Sorry – second place.
Current pace = 91 wins. That’s definitely above what I expected, but still within the realm of best case scenarios.
McDonald hitting .077 against Right-Handed pitchers.
GIDP McDonald. I feel for the guy. Finally gets his chance and just can’t get it done.
..and now it’s a bit lower. There’s NO reason for McDonald to be on the roster. In a night full of almost all positives, that’s the the biggest negative in my book.
This is just crazy. My best case scenario on this road trip was 4-2. If they can do that, these guys will be in, as they say, high cotton.
Great game tonight. Well worth staying up for.
Great start to the trip – this was a fun game!
Awesome.
Reading back through the comments, this one almost made me choke on my coffee:
“Well, the Reds aren’t playing the Mets, so don’t hold your breath for an update.”
Well said.
