Titanic Struggle Recap

Time for a recap of tonight’s titanic struggle massacre….

FINAL
Milwaukee 15
Cincinnati 3
WP: Parra (1-4)
LP: Arroyo (4-2)
BOX SCORE

Do I really need to recap this disaster? Well, okay….

Bronson Arroyo was beyond terrible, Laynce Nix (.353/.405/.676) continues to mash (despite the fact that Dusty is ignoring him), Brandon Phillips and Jay Bruce continue to improve, Dusty still ain’t no front-runner, and Jerry Hairston can’t play offense or defense. Oh, and Paul Janish throws a fastball in the low-nineties.

I think that sums it up. Forget about tonight, because the Reds will get ‘em back tomorrow.

  • Glad I missed most of it. Did catch the Bruce HR.

  • What happened to Masset? Isn’t he the long man? If any game needed a long man it was this game.

  • You saw the only highlight then.

  • You all have been shitting on Dickerson for a while now but his OBP is higher than Taveras.

    ReplyReply
  • I’m assuming Masset wasn’t available because he’s pitched so much lately.

    ReplyReply
  • That’s hardly high praise for Dickerson. We can get rid of both of them, as far as I’m concerned, but at least Taveras plays good defense.

  • I agree, ship them both out. Then send who out there?

  • Tomorrow’s dollar beer night in Louisville. I’d probably rather go to that than watch the Reds tomorrow.

  • Arroyo has about 1 game every 5 starts where he gives the team no chance to win. I don’t get upset about it anymore. It’s just how things go with him. I’ll take the 4 decent starts I guess and live with the terrible one.

Only good things from game, BP keeps playing some great defense. and is hitting more. Bruce got some hits and made a nice throw to home to get Weeks, though I think Weeks got a lousy jump and seemed to miss his stride rounding 3rd. Bruce threw him out by 15 feet. probably Bronson was thrown off by the delay or it was just the law of averages catching up to the Reds staff.

You can officially put me on the “Homer-to-the-bullpen” train. After last night and the 14 inning game, I think the bullpen could use some extra help. Gonzo to the DL, Homer to the big club.

Not going to lie, I kind of liked Janish pitched. At first I didn’t, but no need to waste most of the bullpen and Janish actually got two strikeouts

ESPN is pointing out how David Weathers and Cy Young are now tied for number of appearances…. then they point out that he’s still something like 424 wins behind and about 1300 strikeouts lol

They’ll probably have to give Janish a couple of nights of to rest his arm. He threw a lot of pitches. I always worry about injury when a position player is called on to pitch.

To bring up Bailey, they’ll need to lose a pitcher. We already have 12.

Someone posted the other day about whether Bailey could warm up fast enough for the bullpen. He should never be used in a quick warm up situation. Long relievers usually have plenty of time to warm because the manager is hoping (wanting) the starter works through it.

As for Janish pitching, it was rather interesting. He’s now averaging 18 strikeouts per nine innings. Ah, the beauty of a small sample size…or the terror…his ERA is 45.00.

    Just thought of something else.

Masset was supposed to be our long man, after “losing” the spring training battle for the fifth starting spot. (my opinion…there was never a battle…it was Owings spot to lose as long as he remained healthy) Anyway, Masset was used to short relief two days in a row…then he wasn’t available. He was being used in short relief because Burton and Lincoln had not been pitching well.

Somebody didn’t think this through, or didn’t communicate. If Dusty felt he had to move Masset to short relief, who was going to be the long reliever? It obviously wasn’t Daniel Ray Herrera, since he was kept as a LOOGY. Yet, who’s warming up first in the bullpen?

Herrera is still the guy to go if they were to call up Bailey. If you want to know how much money the Reds actually have, study their bullpen contracts…almost all their veterans have two year multi-million dollar deals…

So, if Masset is now short-relief, when were we going to get a long reliever? And, who needs to make, or communicate, that decision or need?

As for Janish resting…I feel fairly certain that Jerry Hairston, Jr., is now our starting shortstop, skills or no skills.

  • A common tactic used by our brain trust (pitchers/catchers/staff) is to focus on throwing two pitches early in the game and add a third pitch when we face their lineup the second a third time through. Volquez and Cueto always do that. That’s fine when things are going well, but Jesus, MAKE AN ADJUSTMENT!! Sprinkling the changeup in there could’ve made a difference not only to the hitters (who were sitting fastball), but the umpire as well by giving him a different look. That ump accounted for at least 3 runs by pinching Bronson. Either way it’s a loss, but at least the game could’ve been competitive. A series win against the Cards is meaningless if you get swept by the Brew-ha’s.

Three good starts in AAA indicates that he’s ready for the big leagues? What about the two absolutely terrible ones before those last three? Give him some more time down there before bringing him up to get shelled again.

  • Pitchers can be just as streaky as hitters. Remember, Homer tore it up early last season as well. Might as well get the benefit of his best pitching at the big league level.

I’m not saying bring him up permanently, but I think the club could use a fresh arm in the bullpen right now especially after being heavily used the last 3 days. If we have another long extra inning game or, god forbid, another disastrous start like Arroyo’s, we could really run up the mileage on the bullpen.

Why not Homer? I’ll agree that the best thing for HIM right now is probably taking the ball every fifth day in Louisville, but I’m not sure if the best thing for the TEAM isn’t for their best minor league pitcher to be in the bullpen while its a little fatigued.

Here’s where we are as a team as of now, offensively:

    2009 Reds vs. RHP’s: .255/.333/.397 (711 PA)
    2009 Reds vs. LHP’s: .225/.303/.324 (318 PA)

Right handed hitters as a whole (vs. both RHP’s and LHP’s combined) are batting .220/.289/.310. (For comparison, Paul Bako batted .217/.299/.328 last year.)

On one hand, there’s no way it’s going to stay that bad for the rest of the year, so there’s some reason for optimism in those numbers.

On the other hand, don’t we have to do something to address this? We have nothing but punch-and-judy slap hitters on the bench.

Let’s get Jonny Gomes up here TODAY.

Gomes has a career .266/.369/.510 line on his career vs. LHP’s.

Gomes is also batting .400/.500/.900 in 20 AB’s vs. LHP’s in Louisville.

“Let’s get Jonny Gomes up here TODAY.”

And remove whom from the 40-man roster to make room? If you say McDonald, fine. But you’re still a man short on the bench. No, if Gonzalez goes on the DL I would expect Castillo or Sutton to be called because they’re on the 40-man and they can shi[ them back out easily in two weeks without losing anyone on the 40-man.

“Anyway, Masset was used to short relief two days in a row…then he wasn’t available. He was being used in short relief because Burton and Lincoln had not been pitching well. Somebody didn’t think this through, or didn’t communicate.”

No, Masset was used in short relief to get some work. He had not pitched in a game in six days, and even then he made only seven pitches. So Baker got him an inning the next night, where he promptly threw just nine pitches. Had nothing to do with the effectiveness of Burton or Lincoln.

But then, if he threw just 16 pitches in two nights, could he have worked another inning last night? Probably. But if you needed him tonight you’ve wasted that opp because of mop-up duties in a blowout. So it was actually thought out quite well.

  • .310 slugging?? Please tell me that was a typo. We need EdE to heat up when he gets back.

Janish struck out two batters? Nice!

If Owings has another bad start tonight, you could see Homer up to take his place in the rotation. Owings could stick in the pen, but they’d have the same problem they had at the end of ST…unless they’ll settle for 1 lefty in the pen or eat a 2-yr contract (i.e. Lincoln) that just started.

The Reds have seemingly either shutout the other team or not been able to get anyone out. They haven’t had a lot of in between…that’s why they’ve got a record over .500 while not scoring squat for runs.

Scoring more runs may bring the pythagorean record up, but may not necessarily impact actual W-L record if their pitching continues the same pattern (i.e. – the Reds are winning the close, low scoring games and losing blowouts. Scoring more runs = winnings games by larger margins and making the blowouts look closer than they really are.)

  • I have to question our backup shortstop pitching while the starting ss is hurt. Seems careless to me.

Owings is due for a good outing. I’m not concerned about him yet.

Silly Preach, Hairston is the backup SS, not Janish. :p

At least one of the other starters didn’t pitch the 9th!
