Down on the Farm – 2009.05.06

Games played on Tuesday, May 5

Triple – A

Rochester 13 – Louisville 9

This appears to be one of those games that looks closer than it really was.  The Bats scored 4 runs in the 8th inning and then 3 more in the bottom of the 9th to make it look respectable.  The problem for the Bats was that they committed 4 errors that led to 5 unearned runs early in the contest.  Norris Hopper had another multi-hit game, going 3-5 with 2 doubles, a run scored, and an rbi.  Hopper is now batting .311 in Louisville.  Jonny Gomes went 2-5 for the Bats with a homerun, a double, and 4 runs batted in.

Luis Bolivar and Drew Sutton made 2 errors apiece with 3 of the 4 being throwing errors.

Double – A

The game between Carolina and Mobile was postponed.  The unfortunate thing about this was that Redleg Nation Spotlight player Matt Klinker was scheduled to make his first start at Double – A.  For those who remember, Matt did earn the nickname “Rain Man” a while back when it either rained while he pitched or rained out his scheduled start.

Class A Advanced

Fort Myers 10 – Sarasota 3

Yonder Alonso is gradually getting his numbers up.  In this contest, Alonso went 2-4 with a double and a run scored.  Devin Mesoraco doubled in 2 at-bats.  Devin also drove in a run and walked once.

The pitching for the Reds allowed 13 hits and 6 walks.  The club used 4 pitchers, each gave up at least 2 earned runs.

Single – A

Clinton 7 – Dayton 5

The Dragons held a 5-4 lead going to the 8th but watched Clinton tie it with a run in the 8th and then take the lead with 2 runs in the 9th.  Aguido Gonzalez gave up the 2 runs in the 9th inning that gave Clinton the victory.

Cody Puckett had a great day at the plate, going 4-5 with 4 singles and 2 runs scored.  Puckett is still struggling though, batting just .242 on the season.

    Gomes.

More potential for power and a great attitude.

Dickerson hasn’t shown much. He would be good bench material as he can run a little, catch a little, and maybe this would spur him to hit a little when he had a chance to get back in there.

Dusty needs to dallop playing time based on merit and performance. He’s not very good on that. Bako and the Name that shall not be Mentioned from last year are good examples.

    9-game hitting streak for Alonso

  • I’m starting to think a solid #5 pitcher is all this team needs to be a winner. If Homer gets his poo together, move Owings to LF (c’mon.. seriously!), and Reds win.

Gomes is the only one who’d bring us something we don’t already have on the team. I’ve liked him for a while, and I’d like to see what he can do getting some semi-regular playing time, mostly vs. LHP’s.

By the way, here’s what he’s doing down in Louisville…

    Gomes vs. LHP’s (2009) – .368/.478/.737 (1.215 OPS)
    Gomes vs. RHP’s (2009) – .214/.290/.429 (.719 OPS)

The guy really seems to be a lefty masher. Let’s get him up here and start him vs. LHP’s in LF!

  • Baker said in the paper today that if they call someone up, it’d be Castillo.

Castillo is one of many who could bring the team something they already have…someone who isn’t hitting!

I’ll quote from today’s Louisville Courier-Journal…pardon me while I again dispute and choke on the mantra of defense as this year’s focus:

    ———————————————-
The games have been one defensive disaster after another.

The Bats kicked the ball all over Louisville Slugger Field again last night — their second straight four-error game — in a 13-9 loss to the Rochester Red Wings before 7,340 fans.

“It’s the one area that has concerned me almost all year, and the inconsistency,” Louisville manager Rick Sweet said. “A lot of the defense is things that the general fans won’t see — positioning and things like that.”

The Bats have 11 errors in the past three games — all losses.

Louisville’s 31 errors this season lead the International League, and the Bats are last in the league in fielding percentage (.968).

All Castillo will do is allow Hannigan to pinch hit because he would be the 3rd catcher. They really need to bring up Gomes just to hit LHP…McDonald has no business on the roster.

I’d take Gomes in a skinny minute but there was something that made Dusty take McDonald over him. You know how stubborn Dusty can be. IMO Dusty would bring Hopper up before he did Gomes, just so no one would say I told you so….or so he thinks.
