The good news? Aaron Harang is on the mound for the Reds. That’s always good news.
The bad news? Josh Johnson is on the mound for Florida, and he’s pretty good: 2-0, 2.60 ERA in 2009.
Could be a fun game, especially if the Reds keep up their competitive play on the road. Discuss it here!
P.S.: More bad news — Chris Dickerson is starting in LF and “hitting” second again tonight. Oh, Dusty!
P.S.S.: Go contribute to the “Witty RN Slogan” contest!
WHY DUSTY? WHY? What does Laynce Nix have to do to get in the frickin lineup? An offensively challenged team putting an offensively challenged player(not to mention his defensive struggles) in the 2 hole every night just boggles my mind. Nix, outside Votto has been the Reds most patient and productive hitter and can’t get a sniff, its ridiculous.
I love this team!
But I can’t understand the fascination with Dickerson. Oh well, we can win anyway!
Don’t hold back jdart, tell us how you really feel
Seriously though, even if you are going to play Dickerson, batting him second? Granted we are short of guys that can get on base, but you can’t give Rosales a shot batting up there?
Yeah, that’s my deal, why do you have to bat him second? It’s crazy.
Why not 7th?
Dusty: “Who’s got more talent than Chris Dickerson?”
What an idiot. Only about five hundred other players, Dusty.

Lance McCallister on the Reds pre-game show on WLW just coined “HAVOC” as his own.
We should all email him to tell him he needs to give Redleg Nation credit for HAVOC.
Can anyone find Lance’s email address? That’s THEFT!
SAVE CHUCK!!! UPDATE:
NBC has pushed it decision on RN’s favorite TV show (Americas Funniest Home Videos a distant second) Chuck to May 19th. I for one have become slightly less optimistic with the release of this news.
Lance’s email: lance1530homer@fuse.net
I just emailed him. We should all shoot him a quick email telling him Redleg Nation came up with that HAVOC thing over two months ago:
http://redlegnation.com/2009/03/03/h-a-v-o-c/
And I hadn’t seen this post until I just did a search, but apparently ESPN ripped RN off, too:
http://redlegnation.com/2009/04/02/astute-reds-fans/
It still kills me that the Reds let Jorge Cantu go for absolutely nothing.
Lance McCallisters E-mail address can be found here:
http://www.1530homer.com/pages/lancesBlog.html
Just sent my email to Lance! He needs to give credit where credit is due.
And I love Chuck!!!
I thought someone posted here a couple of nights ago that Chuck had already been saved? What’s the story?
On the Marlins broadcast, they just did a promo for tomorrow’s game “against Jerry Hairston, Jr., and the Cincinnati Reds!”
Can you believe that?
Save Chuck News..
http://remote.lohudblogs.com/2009/05/04/8690/
http://www.PleaseSaveChuck.com/
BTW, send those emails. Can’t believe we keep getting ripped off by these media-types.
Joey Votto is good. has anyone mentioned that?
I smell a double play.
Brother!
Not as bad as a double play but still bad.
BP = WORST CLEAN UP HITTER EVER. When does he ever get a runner on third in with less than 2-outs? What are his stats in that situation I wonder.
Harang doesn’t have the dorito on his chin! It’s a beard now.
Hanley Ramirez RIPPED that one.
I’m going to email Lance complaining about that homer Harang just gave up.
Regis in the booth with the Marlins broadcasters.
I can’t wait to see Kathy Lee in the booth with George Grande.
Another hit for Rosales. This guy just keeps going and going and going.
If Chuck gets saved, I’m going to start watching it.
Don’t worry Rosales will be on the bench tomorrow and Wednesday per Hal McCoy.
So if they had Rosales batting higher in the line up he could get more at-bats and possibly score some runs…then we could have Nix in (hot hitter) but noooo we’ve got to have Dickerson in, guess he’s the man crush for Dusty this year, same crap different season :tired:
Hanley Ramirez HR in the 1st 1-0 Marlins now in the top of the 2nd.
on the top of cleanup hitters and BP being the worst ever.
he’s probably not close to the worst ever and might not even be the worst this season (check the SF Giants lineup) but I did wonder if he’s the worst Red cleanup hitter in recent memory.
Here are the OPS in the #4 spot for Reds cleanup hitters since 2000 (I’m only including players with significant PA in the cleanup spot). This OPS is their career OPS in the #4 spot
OPS
1.070 Dunn
.909 Jr
.850 Casey
.848 Bichette
.831 Aurilia
.821 D Young
.816 EE
.810 Conine
.808 Guillen
.804 Phillips (.627 this season)
.783 Kearns
Why do I care about Regis being in the booth?
Why wouldn’t you care about Regis in the booth? Who doesn’t love Regis?
I’m a man! I’m 40!
That’s my favorite press conference moment ever.
they showed it on a best sports show ever promo, that’s why I mentioned it.
Oh, I know why Nix is on bench…because Dickerson is considered FAST when compared to Nix
No one in the stands again tonight. It must be the economy, but I’ve seen more empty seats at more different stadiums this year than I can ever remember.
Dickerson looked UGLY right there. Again.
This team has no life…with the exception of Votto and Rosales
Dickerson was FAST on his way back to the dugout there. And he sure looks good in the uniform. He LOOKS like a ballplayer, even if he isn’t.
Another question why is Darnell Mcdonald on the roster I think Gomes would be alot better off the bench ph and for the locker room.
Votto is always a loud out
Chad…you should watch Chuck from the beginning.
No, it’s just Florida. They’ve NEVER got fans in the stands, despite two WS championships since 1997.
Jimmy: I can’t remember when Florida’s stadium is NOT empty. It surprised me last year because they always compete…imagine what Reds fans would be like given a team like Florida?
Harang looks like he has already gained that 30 pounds back.
Chad: You really do need to watch Chuck from toe to tip if your going to get on board.
hmmm…not sure I buy that Florida isn’t drawing fans
2009 attendance
23667 per home game for Florida
21460 per home game for the Reds
# seats filled
65.1% Florida at home
51% Reds at home
only 6 teams in baseball have a worse average home attendance than the Reds
Harang is working behind in the count a lot…wonder if he’s hurting? I also noticed Cueto did some too last night but it was luckily just the Pirates…a team in which the Reds have shutout 3 times in 6 games :p
:p
That was pretty slick.
Very nice play by BP!
I guess that makes up for BP k’ing?
Looks like somebody put a bug up Phillips butt about hustling.
After hearing so much about Chuck I will never watch.
If they renew Chuck, I will get the DVDs and watch the series from the beginning. This I pledge to you.
Harang leaving ball up for Ramirez
Godspeed, Chad. Godspeed.
Hanley is a stud.
Gomes is hitting .239. Don’t think he deserves to be up.
BP was chugging yesterday out of the box. And Joey has been running VERY quickly all over the diamond since Friday.
Joey’s been running hard every day.
Ive really noticed Joey taking it up a gear since B.Ps lack of hustle nightly over last week.
This game has the all to familiar feel of another Aaron Harang lack of runs kinda night, so so unfortunate.
I just realized something: I don’t need to apologize for not liking Brandon Phillips. The only reason I “should” like him is for the shirt he wears, which would be a pretty stupid reason, when you really think about it. If dude was on the Brewers, Mets, or Rockies, nobody would be able to stand him.
I want him to play well because I still root for the majority of the laundry based in Cincinnati, but I’m through apologizing for the fact that I don’t enjoy his act, or, frankly, his game.
That was a sweet play though.
But Chris, he drinks milk.
This crap of jumping on the first or second pitch is reminding me of last year’s mistakes…looks like they’ve learned nothing
BP is playing really shallow tonight, for some reason.
Jason, I’d blocked that out.
Interesting scheduling. The Reds come into tonight with 18 inter-division games and other than the Astros with 19 they are first in the Central.
Ugh, those FS Ohio promos are so bad. You can hear the directors saying “thats good” after a take and so many of the spots you can see the players-dusty read straight from the q card.
Oh, I know why Nix is on bench…because Dickerson is considered FAST when compared to Nix
That’s exactly the reason Dickerson is playing. One would have thought Dusty was a speed demon when he played.
One reason Harang doesn’t get many runs is he usually faces the other teams best pitcher.
Cody Ross kills the Reds if I remember correct
I don’t know if Josh Johnson qualifies, does he?
Harang’s run support isn’t helped by the fact that he can’t hit himself.
George has actually told perhaps the most interesting story I have ever heard from him. He was talking about a behind-the-scenes perspective of how the Reds lost Trevor Hoffman. Why can’t he do this stuff more often?
Never mind, I guess Johnson is the ace.
I had the same thought, Jim.
Followed shortly by, “will this story EVER end. It’s twice as long as it needed to be.”
Compare Joey Votto VS. Edwin E. from a work ethic standpoint?
Apparently you never heard GG tell the story of when he ate a meatball sub in Milwaukee in the spring of 96′.
A question from WORLD in New York City:
Why don’t the Reds draw fans? The ticket prices seem reasonable and the team is OK.
Is the economy real bad in the Queen City? That bad?
Try New York City on for size. I went to Opening Day at Yankee Stadium and was shocked. My seat was over $150.00, 12 oz. beers were $12.00, tepid Nathan’s hot dogs were $9.75, and on and on. Everyone was bitching about the cost of everything and saying that the Steinbrenner family was about the worst thing that had ever happened to NYC. The folks in the $2,600. seats behind the plate were paying attention for a while. But they had cleared out pretty much before I decided to leave. I left at the 7th inning stretch and walked down the street. What I saw there surprised me a bit. Obviously, many folks weren’t eager to pony up the King’s Ransom and never went to the stadium but jammed into the bars adjacent to the old Stadium and drank $5.00 beers and watched the Hi-Def screens. They were much happier than the fans that I had left in the stadium. A number of them told me that they had sat in the field boxes for years but just wouldn’t give it up to the greedy sons of old George.
Well, not to go on but things could be worse for you guys in Cincy.
Go Reds.
Actually, Edwin gets big points from everyone around the Reds organization for being one of the hardest workers around. He’s always taking extra batting practice and watching video, and taking grounders, according to reports.
“The guy who made that sub was a great sandwich artist, yes. But more important, he was a great MAN.”
They need to follow up that text poll with one asking how many time the Reds will be shutout.
EE doesn’t work hard enough at his “determined” face, frantic arm movements, or other indicia of hustle.
GG actually being very perceptive and nuanced here on the PED topic. Frankly, this is one place where I agree with GG more than Chris Welsh.
Chris: Well played.
In 2 at bats Bruce has seen 2 pitches…that is plain pathetic
World, I can name that tune in four words:
“Eight consecutive losing seasons.”
EE does come off as being rather “apathetic”
So I see Gameday Cafe has apparently changed their name to Head First Cafe, odd.
So I see Gameday Cafe has apparently changed their name to Head First Cafe, odd.
i just read fay’s post aabout the nix dickerson debate and it nearly made my head explode. i hated dusty baker in SF and CHI, and man, it’s so much worse now that he’s here.
I can’t believe he has the gall to suggest that he’s not going to take away dickerson’s spot based on a small sample size! DICKERSON HAS HIS SPOT BASED ON A SMALL SAMPLE.
want more of a sample Dusty, try their minor league numbers. Nix:
.280 .346 .481 827
Dickerson:
.260 .363 .415 778
That’s years of data that show that nix has consistently hit for a higher average and more power. There is nothing to suggest that Dickerson has been or ever will be better than Nix.
As did Adam Dunn.
Ryan Freel looks otherwise. As did Paul Bako.
I know which two I’d take (EE’s current crapitude notwithstanding).
World – Okay teams don’t pack them in. It takes an exciting team. Starting players like Dickerson, Gonzalez, and Hernandez sort of suck the excitement out of a team.
Exactly, Al. Thanks for digging up those numbers.
If I was willing to wade into the comment cesspool over at Fay’s, I’d have made a similar argument (but w/o the evidence).
The Reds traditionally don’t start drawing until after the kids get out of school. Also, the home games in April seemed to all fall on wet nights…they stay competitive, they’ll draw ok when the weather warms up and the kids are out of school.
mhopp, I think EE’s appearance is deceiving. He could probably benefit if he just relaxed a bit.
Will the Reds score tonight?
well the Reds have only average 3.2 pitches per PA so far this game and part of that is due to Johnson throwing tons of strikes.
Oh, that makes sense. Thanks Chris.
I grew up a Phillies fan and remember a lot of empty seats in Connie Mack Stadium and later at horrible Veteran’s Stadium.
But at least the Rojos are on the rise.
Bill, any insight on why the Reds get to use that excuse – or, why it happens to be true in Cincinnati? I’ve never really heard that about other markets.
Only thing I could think of is the regional nature of the Reds market?
Taveras looked real bad in that AB.
I don’t know what you guys are talking about Dickerson ROCKS!!
Dickerson’s new stance helped that ball have eyes.
Chris Dickerson has the green light all the time?
I don’t know Chris, but I’ve heard that since the ’70s…and the regional market is the only logic that I can find to the argument also…and I don’t think they’re as much of a regional draw as they used to be…
HAVOC!!!!!!!!
HAVOC!!
Nix couldve stole that easily. (dollop of sarcasm)
havoc!
Who’s got more talent than that guy?? Who, I ask you?
Dickerson was pretty darn close to being safe…the throw was tailing towards first…that play was closer then they’re saying it was.
I frickin hate Dusty, because he’s got me mocking a player (and more importantly, a man) I actually like quite a bit.
Walt J. needs to trade for a left fielder with some sock. Too bad you guys didn’t get Ibanez or Dye. Phillips just isn’t a cleanup batter. He should hit 6th or 7th where a DP won’t kill you. Nothing like runners on the corner with one out and a twin killing to take the air out of a team. And I understand Phillips is a master at doing just that.
I’d trade him if I could get a cleanup batter. And play Hairston at second. He’s pretty good at that position and can provide surprising offense for a guy who is getting a bit long in the tooth. At least he hustles all the time.
I’m going to come clean
I don’t like havoc a lot of the time
In Dusty’s mind, talent equals fast.
Dusty sucks
Oh, the other teams know Phillips is a bit of a dog. I guess that hurts his market value a bit.
Not sure I agree with either assessment on Hairston. Though I’d love to trade BP for a LF.
I frickin hate Dusty, because he’s got me mocking a player (and more importantly, a man) I actually like quite a bit.
This.
Dickerson seems like a great guy. I think he’s really trying. He’s just overmatched and in a role where he is destined to fail. It’s not his fault. It’s Dusty’s.
As a fourth or fifth outfielder, I would venture a guess that there wouldn’t be a person here who would object to Dickerson being on the roster.
This is a painful game for the Reds so far…
I can see why people talk about Hanley!
I’d rather move BP to SS AND trade for a LFer
Hanley is good…I wish we had a shortstop like that
Hopefully if Harang throws a water cooler tonight, it hits Dickerson in the head and gives him yet another concussion. That seems the only way to get his .212 BA out of the line-up.
I know Jorge Cantu has been discussed ad nauseum, but what upsets me the most about him is how they let him go and why.
After discussing Cantu we can discuss Lohse…he’s only in the top five in ERA this year :emotion:
Its gotta be so hard for Harang to keep getting stuck with these kinda games. It has be part mental at this point for the offense every time he is on the bump.
Anybody have an Olympus point-and-shoot camera?
My wife has submitted her Mother’s Day list and there’s a deal at Costco.
thinking about it more. We move BP to SS, play Rosales at 2B, leave EE at 3B and trade for a LFer and we’d have something like this
Taveras
Rosales
Votto
LF we trade for
Bruce
EE
Phillips
Hernandez
well.. at least with Lohse we got some warm bodies for him. and the phillies and twins have to feel the same as we do.
Yeah, I had no trouble dumping Lohse when they did.
I actually love that lineup, Mike, and I think it’s one that could compete.
Looks like Harang will be 2-4 with an ERA of about 3.15
Anyone else in baseball like that?
Sorry, Mike. You are going on small sample size if you’re dumping Dickerson or Alex Gonzales.
Lohse wasn’t ever that good until he met Dave Duncan and drank some of the magical water they have over there.
Loshe has always bothered me. He wasn’t much before we got him and not much when we had him. He flashed brilliance but you never knew if he was going to stink or pitch a good game.
Then he goes to a team and another pitching coach helps him be consistent.
The part that ticks me off is I wish our pitching coach did that. I was happy when Loshe was gone and then look what he turns into.
Don’t know about the Olympus, Chris, but my wife has a Nikon Coolpix that she LOVES. Even the video that it takes it pretty good quality.
and let’s give Dave Duncan credit for making Lohse the pitcher he is now.
Let’s give Dave Duncan credit for making all sorts of retreads into world beaters.
@mhopp…Dan Haren is about the same way in Arizona…their offense is just horrible
good line up mike…get rid of Dusty and it’ll be done
Dave Duncan is great…he makes something out of the Lohse’s and Franklin’s of the world…amazing really
mhopp, I haven’t looked at Dan Haren’s stats lately, but he’s looked great and has gotten zero run support.
I think Frank Pastore could have been lights out with Dave Duncan as his pitching coach.
Good call bruble. you beat me to the punch.
I will check the Nikon. Just found an interesting review at Amazon on the Olympus. Guy says that point-and-shoots with high megapixel counts are actually self-defeating. The sensor can’t handle all the data, or some such. Don’t know if that’s nonsense, but I want good picture quality.
mhopp, Haren 3-3 1.47 ERA
GG is like the Al Roker of Reds country… always giving shoutouts and happy birthdays to random people.
Reds need a hero.
at a boy Bruce!
GG is like the Al Roker of Reds country… always giving shoutouts and happy birthdays to random people.
or Willard Scott?
nice job Bruuuuuuuuuce!
Bruuuce! Nice work. We need to get into that lackluster Marlins bullpen.
that’s an awful low strike he’s calling and every close call has gone against the Reds
Do you think the weatherman on “Family Guy” is a parody of Al Roker?
Willard Scott is the name i meant! Thanks for bailing me out! Maybe GG can call the weather.
good question mhopp and yes Harang is not the worst hard-luck pitcher in baseball
but there aren’t many. The main one has been the best pitcher in baseball this season. Haren for AZ. He has a 1.47 ERA and a 3-3 record. He’s striking out batters at an unbelievable rate and has been unhittable but he plays for one of only 2-3 teams with a worse offense than the Reds.
Here are the worst hard-luck pitchers in baseball this season. All have started at least 4 games.
ERA+ ERA W L Player Tm
315 1.47 3 3 Danny Haren ARI
227 2.13 2 2 Kevin Millwood TEX
226 1.89 2 2 Jair Jurrjens ATL
218 2.25 1 1 Edwin Jackson DET
195 2.19 2 2 Wandy Rodriguez HOU
159 2.91 2 3 Doug Davis ARI
147 3.09 2 3 Aaron Harang CIN
134 3.34 1 2 Glen Perkins MIN
133 3.48 0 2 Max Scherzer ARI
132 3.81 2 2 John Danks CHW
surprise, ARI, CIN, CHW, and HOU are among the 10 worst offenses
Now we’re cookin’!
sweet…Ramon! Let’s keep it going!
Way to be Hernandez!!! Get Some!
Wow!!!!!
Make it happen Rosales.
I don’t know that Ramon has a pulled base hit yet this year.
Delving into hit charts…
He pulled that GW HR in Houston, I know that for certain.
The Nikon is your basic point and shoot, but we’ve been amazed at the picture quality on just your normal dummy settings. We’ve printed a couple of 8×10s, and the color and clarity are outstanding.
I love my EOS, but you can just toss the Nikon into your pocket and take it wherever you go.
Too bad Ernie Lombardi the II is on 1B.
Am I missing something, or are MLB.com’s hit charts only available by park. As in, there’s no “all parks” option.
While we’re on the topic, does anyone have any good suggestions for mother’s day gifts?
Nice work right there.
New ball game.
damn…at least we have tied it up and get to their bullpen pretty soon I hope.
uhh.. flowers?
Yeah Chad, my XTi isn’t popular with my wife, and frankly, it gets annoying to lug around sometimes.
There’s that motorcycle commercial. Take a drink.
Umm, a George Grande Drinking Game complete with a apron and swear jar is always nice for Mother. It really is the gift that keeps giving all year, Clark.
Flowers aren’t big with my wife. Waste of money, she says.
My 7 year old daughter, however, loves nothing more than to get flowers from Daddy.
Maybe a spa gift certificate.
That motorcycle commercial scared the hell outta me the first time I saw it. Stupid commercial.
I wish the real Harold Ramis did that motorcycle PSA. His smart ass humor would liven it up.
Yeah, but I have found myself looking to the left a lot more often up here in The Glass City.
Baseball reference shows this for hernandez
5 pulled / 3 for hits
39 up the middle / 7 for hits
17 going the other way / 8 for hits
interesting more than half of his contact generates ground balls and not many line drives that sounds like his problem right there.
Ugh, Dickerson.
Eky, just paid attention to the avatar. Great choice.
Better take Harang out!
Would’ve been a really nice play, there. First time I’ve seen the advertised good defense.
I am still laughing at that Conan bit. have many favorite parts, but one of them was when he charged the mound. You know he was just dying to get into that old-timey boxing stance.
Thanks. Best baseball skit ever.
Where’s Marcus McBeth now?
Whew!
…gasp..
Whoa… I thought that was a gonner.
whew!
Wow, a Marcus McBeth drop.
Bruce!!!
See, I’m a Reds fan after all!
I think McBreath went to Baltimore
“Pull-hols.” Drink.
World: Its more like “Bruuuuuuce”, good try.
My favorite part was the jet plane flying overhead.
“Demonry!”
Squeaked that inning out…theres a Stormy brewing…
Wow, Harang is a horse but hangin’ by a thread there…he is one serious competitor
The old-timey boxing stance was great, as were the sideburns Conan was sporting. This sounds awful, but I loved when Conan laughed at that girl’s father dying.
I also loved when he shouted “Devilry!” at the plane flying overhead.
Great skit. Can’t believe I hadn’t seen it before this weekend.
I like it when he’s tellin that girl that he saw her husband making out with a dude.
McBeth is still with Boston. Pitching for their AAA club
haha yes.. the ol’ fistacuffs.
Oh yeah, I forgot that one, EKy. That poor girl was a weirdo, to paraphrase Billy Madison.
It’s Laynce Time!
Taveras has looked really lost against this guy tonight.
Yeah, she took that whole gag pretty seriously. Reminds me of an episode of South Park where they visit an old timey fort and no one will break character for any reason whatsoever.
Say Hey, Willy!!!!!
Let the HAVOC begin!!!
Now let’s see some havoc. Seriously, this is one of those times where everybody needs to know he’s going, and he goes anyway.
Is it HAVOC time?
Steal, Willy!!!
This is what Willy is paid to do.
It’s like when people bitched about Dunn taking walks with guys on. I kindof understand it a little bit.
Goooooooo Willy.
If those hecklers are as loud to the batters as they are to me watching on TV, that might be a little annoying.
The new stance delivers. Dusty is smirking.
Way to go, Dickerson.
nice…come on Votto!
I think Dusty just sent Nix down to Dayton for that foul out.
Wait.. Dickerson has a new batting stance? did i miss something?
Nice outing by JJ, there.
He went back to his old stance, or copied Jay Bruce, or something. Or both.
Is that Brook Jacoby thing or what?
What is the point of having fast, havocy guys, if they refuse to run?
Stupid wayto burn a leftie… Votto hits lefties just as good as righties.. maybe Dusty is on to something.
When Jay Bruce was called up from Class AAA Louisville to Cincinnati on May 27, Chris Dickerson made a decision — “If it works for Jay, why not for me?”
While Dickerson batted out of crouch, Bruce was more upright, “So I modeled my swing after Jay’s and hit more upright and that’s when I took off.”
Dickerson batted .287 and after he, too, was called up, he hit .304 in 31 games for the Reds.
Somehow, though, he retreated back to a more crouched stance and his average was at .205 before Saturday’s game — hence an early batting practice session.
“Best batting practice session I ever had,” said Dickerson. “I went back to the more upright stance. I feel more comfortable seeing the ball in a crouch, more of a two-strike approach, but I’ve had success more upright. I can work down on the ball more.
“It’s a comfort level — whatever feels good day-to-day,” he said. “I’m at the point to start again with a clean slate and while my head is clear. This stance will help me mentally and physically.”
I just wondered something. Have the Reds, in their long history every had a good pitching and bad hitting team and win?
stupid way to burn a lefty on one guy.. Phillips doesn’t hit lefties or righties.
If Willy had (1) stolen 2nd or (2) gone to third on the single, he could have (3) scored a run on the sac fly.
We have our two fastest guys on base, and we need 3 hits to score a run. Might as well have Dunn and Wily Mo out there.
Let’s go, Hotshot.
Thanks YCity. Makes you wonder why the hell he went back to a stance he couldn’t hit with.
Spongetech.com must be huge! They are here in Miami as well.
I’d much rather have Dunn out there.
The runners will be off and scampering. Take a drink.
EKy, it seems like he forgot that he had adopted the Bruce-like stance last season.
“Off and scampering.”
I think George sees life as a cross between a Capra movie and a Chip N Dale cartoon.
Wow!! The HP ump got walloped on that one.
Holy mackerel. I’m not sure he knows where he is right now.
I think this is the first time this season were there might have been an advantage to splitting up the Lefty hitter Bruce and Votto
So then I have to ask, what is it that Brook Jacoby does?
He hit that one hard.
Poopie.
That was the best AB from BP I’ve seen in a while…just hit it in wrong place
Threw a fit like a 2 year old, too.
Well, BP hit it hard anyway. We really needed to take advantage of that opportunity.
Oh no, Weathers coming in. I still can’t talk myself into being confident.
Yea for the life of me I cant figure out why Taveras didn’t steal 2nd. The catcher even bobbled the ball a couple of times. WHERE’S THE HAVOC?
So then I have to ask, what is it that Brook Jacoby does?
Collects a paycheck by keeping the bases unclogged.
Phillips looked like that Steve Urkel character, “Stefan” after hitting that ball.
“You washin’ the Res, on Fock Spors Hio.”
So says CoCo on the FSN promo. Who cares, as long as he can pitch.
Are they getting a new park, or what? This place is a nightmare.
Remember those WHERE’s the BEEF commercials? I think it was Wendy’s back in the 80s. This old lady would look under a bun and see a tiny burger and go “WHERE’s the BEEF?”
I’d like to see an old lady Reds fan stand up at a game and cry “WHERE’S THE HAVOC?”
Taveras has to go in that situation. Has to go.
Why didn’t he?
Johnnie B.?
Ceeker, unfortunately, i don’t think you’re too far off on that.
OMG your right, Phillips is the Urkel of Major League baseball. Can’t believe I never saw that before.
They showed a shot of the bullpen and Mike Lincoln was out there laughing. And it made me mad.
Irrational, I know. But I just don’t think Lincoln should be enjoying himself as much as he’s caused me headaches.
That’s my story and I’m sticking to it.
The new park they’re getting is right where the old Orange Bowl was… in Little Havana.. A friend who’s been there tells me that’s not the best neck of the woods. I have no idea why they’d build a new park in a ghetto, but whatever.
Gotta love ol’ Stormy.
David Weathers is my hero.
Stormy looking very good!
I’ve been trying to think of a t-shirt slogan for the other thread, and I’m not as witty as you guys.
You guys have any more good ones?
I think they like to build parks (and other similar things) in “bad areas” because they think it’ll automatically make the surrounding area better. I suspect the real reason is that it’s a lot easier to buy and demolish whatever stands in the way of the parking and/or structure space…
hahaha.. camera man got caught checkin out some booty there.
who is this david weathers, and what has he done with david weathers?
I’d like to see an old lady Reds fan stand up at a game and cry “WHERE’S THE HAVOC?”
That may be the t-shirt slogan right there.
They should build the ballpark in West Palm Beach where all the rich old people live.
I swear – Brandon Phillips has all these guys terrified. Short of Brett Favre or Derek Jeter, I’ve never seen such verbal f@lla#i0 from a group of professional announcers and writers. It’s like there’s a BP Praise Quota that has to be satisfied every day.
I just re-wound it to see what EKy was talking about and, no question, the camera man was caught checking out some serious booty. I’m glad, too.
the suckiest ballpark i’ve been to, as far as being on the bad side of town goes, is US Cellular in Chicago. that placed suuuuucked.
There he is.. I walk in to see a clutch situation and Hernandez is batting AGAIN
Let’s go, Rose-ales!!!!!
That’s very perceptive, CeeKeR. I’d not thought of it exactly that way. But you’re right. Also, they can sell the project as “redevelopment” and trigger tax breaks and grants.
That said, Denver and San Diego put their parks in run-down, central city warehouse/industrial areas, and really reshaped the areas.
As long as I live, I will be bitter that the Reds didn’t do the same thing at Broadway Commons.
Al, you should enter #262 into the contest.
A Gonzalez game winner would make Dusty’s night complete. Odds of that happening?
SF was a run down warehouse/industrial area as well and while it’s all still be redeveloped there is still no reason to go down there if there isn’t a game. I’ve gone down there twice when there wasn’t a game (well other than working next door for a year) since the stadium opened.
The thing with the new Marlins park is that the Orange Bowl has already been there for 3 million years.
bad luck for Reds…lets hope for a rally next inning!
I’ve been trying to think of the most obscure Red of the past that I could come up with…and use his name in a slogan entry. Haven’t come up with a good one yet, though.
It’s why I was thinking about Marcus McBeth earlier, fwiw.
8IP, 3 hits, no BB and 7K’s for Weathers now? He’s making some fantasy baseball player happy.
My wife won’t let me get a motorcycle, and these ads they keep showing aren’t helping matters.
I think I will enter WHERE’s THE HAVOC? in the contest. Thanks Jim.
I swear to god Rhodes is gonna log 110 innings this year if his arm doesn’t fall off.
Now Rhodes. One of these old guys has to give up some runs sometime, don’t they?
what did arthur rhodes just write on the side of the mound?
They’re putting it near the old Orange Bowl? That certainly qualifies as an area in need of some revitalization. And Kevlar.
Mike, isn’t there a fancy new Barnes & Noble across from Giants Stadium?
how about Bip Roberts?
I got a very polite email back from Lance McAlister, by the way.
I think Arthur wrote his name on there. Because he owns the mound.
I have no idea.. I’m talking out of my rear.
Wayne Krenchicki is always my go-to guy from obscure Reds.
He has certainly owned the mound this year. Or at least he’s sharing it with Weathers, or subletting from Cueto.
By the way, does anyone remember when Cody Ross was a Red? Me neither.
Brad Gulden is pretty obscure.
Rhodes is throwing mid-90s. Not bad for an old guy.
Wes Helms should be on our team.
Rhodes wrote “Bea” in in the dirt, as he does before every outing. Little known fact – he was named for the late comedienne.
oh no…
shnikies.
I got Havoc in my pants
Rick Auerbach was the one guy on the BRM I disliked, for some reason.
Bruce Berenyi is another good one.
Redleg Nation: Home of the Willie Greene Fan Club.
Dann Billardello
Dave Van Gorder (as Chris mentioned the other day)
Chris Welsh.
If choosing rundown areas, why didn’t the Cardinals pick East St. Louis?
Damn it Dusty you should know that Rhodes does not do as well against righties and yet you put him in there against several…not only that but he’s due to get beat!
Was Dennis Menke considered part of the BRM?
They put Tiger Stadium in a rundown area. Detroit.
it’s time for a sweet sweet dp ball here king arthur
If we survive this Florida has burned up a lot of players.
Rick Auerbach was the one guy on the BRM I disliked, for some reason.
Probably because he drank milk.
You gave him an extra N, EKy.
lol @ chris welsh.
Oh you want obscure Reds??
Brandon Watson 2006
Mike de la Hoz 1969
Clyde Mashore 1969
Paul Noce 1990
Neil Fiala 1981
Sal Butera 1987
John Courtright 1995
Matt Grott 1995
Mark Watson 2003
Bill Short 1969
Jim is on a roll tonight.
I loved Willie Greene.
What about Mo Sanford?
Come on Arthur!!!
Yeah, my bad. Denis. Who spells it like that?
They put Tiger Stadium in a rundown area. Detroit.
Their second choice was Toledo.
Sal Butera, that’s one I was trying to think of.
the rest of those guys, I’ve barely heard of. Guess that qualifies as obscure.
B. Watson and Butera are the only ones I have ever heard of.
Greg Tubbs is a good one.
As are “Nunnally and Stynes.” They have to go together, as they were once the Future FoF.
no way i let hanley beat me here.
what!? masset? him?
Hanley is a good hitter…could have just had him come in at the beginning of the inning and we wouldn’t have to face him…in theory at least
Rick Auerbach… I met him at valley Cardinals Baseball camp in Encino, CA in 1984. He was the batting coach working the cage. I bet I was the only kid who knew who he was cause I was a Reds fan back then and had his baseball card.
Rolando Roomes, of course.
I think I have Sal Butera’s autograph. Should be worth about 3 cents by now.
Junior Kennedy.
9th inning quiz.
What team in the National League was originally the Worcester (Mass.) Brown Stockings?
Still playing.
Did GG really just say: “Rhodes does his job, now it’s just to Masset.”???
Rhodes allows two baserunners, and that’s doing his job?
Louis Quinones.. very fun name there.
Brandon Watson – isn’t he the holder of the all-time MiLB hitting streak?
This isn’t good. Hate Hanley.
I like the Nunnally/Stynes idea.
down down down masset. keep the GD ball down.
They really need to get Lincoln out of the pen, so it will give you at least somebody else you could put into a close game.
Not sure I like this move, Dusty
Gave that one an extra ‘O’ I think.
This isn’t exactly a Masset type situation
To be honest, Eddie Milner and Gary Redus probably consumed more of my formative Reds attention than any other players.
I was well aware of the BRM guys, but was a tiny bit too young. Redus and Milner were the first (false) signs of hope after the abysmal Driessen-Cedeno-Trevino teams.
where was that ball blue? c’mon!
Wooster Brown Stockings? I have no idea.
I like the idea of moving Owens to the pen, personally.
CJ Nitkowski… there’s a first round draft pick for ya.
Can’t say I am disappointed with the walk…he is by far their best hitter…so now you HAVE to go right Cantu
God forbid you bring in Cordero here. Much better to get beat with your 13th-best pitcher.
Sorry – I forgot Lincoln. 12th best.
Yeah, I loved Eddie Milner. Had his autograph on my little league glove.
showtime masset. time to get an out.
Come one, don’t lose it with a walk!
Mike Frank.
YES!!!
whew…again but good game!
whew…great job Masset…like I said walking Hanley is not a bad thing in that situation.
It’ll stay in the park – drink
Since it was about 30 feet shy of the warning track – take another drink
Good job, Nicky!!!
We have to save Cordero for Cody Ross.
BJ Ryan.. wait, that’s not an obscure name.. he’s an allstar for the Blue Jays.
Bruuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuce
or the other type of obscure. The BRM is one of the best baseball teams EVER but they also had some duds, they just rarely played
Paul Blair, Ted Uhlaender, Willie Smith, Don Werner, Joel Youngblood, Pat Corrales, Bill Plummer, Pat Osburn, Dan Dumoulin, Rich Hinton, John Noriega, or Santo Alcala
other than 3-4 of those guys I don’t remember any of those names. They all played on the Reds in the 70s and did horrible
credit where credit’s due, masset did exactly what he should have there. nothing worth hitting to hanley and then hardstuff to cantu.
had to trust his stuff there, and he came through.
Loved the outfield of Young, Frank & Stynes.
Clint Hurdle played a year for the Reds.
Chris, I know you’re dying to write a front page post on Dusty’s comments about Dickerson/Nix.

X-tra Inning Fodder:
Brown Stockings = Phillies
Next question.
Where did the Highlanders (Yankees) play in 1901/02?
The 26 fans in attendance sure are having a good time.
I remember hearing Joel Youngblood on a Reds Classic Rewind once. I think.
Is that the same link someone posted earlier? I’m pretending it doesn’t exist. No rule that says I have to listen to Baker’s silliness.
Speaking of beginnings of pro team, I was surprised when I went to a HS football game in Portsmouth, OH a few years ago to discover that it was where the Detroit Lions got started. The football stadium they played in is where the HS plays.
I see that tonight’s thread has made the Top Ten list of most commented posts.
Where did the Highlanders (Yankees) play in 1901/02
Madison Square Garden?
Yeah, that’s the same one, Chris. I just figured you were chomping at the bit to attack that one. :p
The year-of-Mike-Frank was a really odd one for the Reds
How many of you remember that at one point or another all these guys played OF for the Reds in 1998?
Reggie Sanders, Dmitri Young, Chris Stynes, Jon Nunnally, Pat Watkins, Jeffrey Hammonds, Mike Frank, Willie Greene, Lenny Harris, Melvin Nieves, Roberto Petagine, Tony Tarasco, Paul Konerko, Damian Jackson, Eduardo Perez
Yeah.. the Lions sucked in Portsmouth too.
That foul ball was the first ball Dickerson has hit hard in three weeks.
Da meat hook! I liked Dmitri Young.
Massett in the 10th?
ugh…not a very good half inning.
Wow, I’ve missed some really good conversation tonight..my kind of topics
Obscure Reds outfield trivia…who was Jeff Jones?
Duds?? Bite thy tongue Knave.
Paul Blair is a legend for the Orioles. NEVER call him a dud or some Tony Soprano from B’alt-more will call on you.
Joel Youngblood is a hitting stud. He doesn’t need an Italian surrogate. He’ll call on you personally.
Pat Corrales was not particularly known for his catching skills but for his ability to manage and coach major league players after his playing days were done. He was the only mananger in Major League history to be fired at the All-Star break with his team in first place. It happened. The Phillies in 1983. You could look it up. A great drinking buddy of the World, by the way.
Duds? Huh?
Go Reds!!!!
So is Dusty giving up by putting Burton out there?
i’m surprised i’m saying this, but i’d have let masset keep going.
Reds championships with good pitching and no hitting…
1939-40 World Series teams with Bucky Walters and Paul Derringer….that team had terrific infield defense….
thinking about the Young/Frank/Stynes OF
I remember these from that year;
Stynes/Frank/Greene OF!
or the
Konerko/Frank/Greene OF (that must have been a great defensive OF!)
Why wouldn’t Dusty had done a double switch with Janish and Agon? Then Janish could have led off and Masset could pitch another inning or two…waste of a long guy
whew again!
Paul Blair was not good in cincinnati. Batted .150 in 140 at bats
No havoc, no double switches.. is Dusty comatose or something?
To me, Pat Corrales is the guy who took a yellow belt into a fight with black belt Dave Stewart.
Jeff jones was opening day outfielder for 83 Reds. had 58 plate appearances at age 25 (jumped from A ball) and then sent into oblivion
Frank Jones….Frank Jones. I vaguely remember the name.
Wasn’t he a guy who walked a lot and was super fast?
trying not to look it up….80s?
the 80s were some dark days for the Reds
Tony Tarasco is a first base coach in A now. Saw him at a Lake County Captains game. Nice guy, actually said hi to my kids between innings.
I now return you to Jared Burton.
We got Cody Ross for Ben Kozlowski who had a cup of coffee Texas and then never again.
I swear there must only be five people left in the stadium. I can hear some guy saying “C’mon Cody” and I think it might be one of the Marlins coaches. It’s so quiet there otherwise.
ha ha shows you what I remember….jeff jones…not frank jones
Cody Ross couldn’t crack the 2006 outfield…dunn, griffey, kearns, denorfia
Good for Burton…that’s good to see!
Ok, now that it was brought up why no double switch? Seems like it would have made sense.
Nice job by Burton…The offense needs to pick it up and score because we are getting ever closer to the human white flag that is Mike Lincoln.
Chris, got any more kindle book recommendations?
X-TRA INNING FODDER FROM THE WORLD
Chris-
Wrong.
About 200 miles off. They were the Baltimore Orioles. They were owned and managed by the icon John McGraw who reluctantly moved them to NYC for three reasons. One, the fledgling American League wanted a team in New York; two, attendance had suddenly fallen off; and three, his fetching girlfriend lived in Gotham City.
Which one do you think precipated the hike north?
BONUS QUESTION: What team moved to Baltimore in the ’50s to once again bear the mantle of the state bird of Maryland?
Jones wasn’t fast at all…big guy, frankly stiff…came out of nowhere and sent to nowhere…I remember tuning in opening day on the radio and wondering who he was; outfield was redus, milner, cedeno
Griff never hit a milestone at home.
St. Louis browns
My lord! Does anyone on this Marlin staff have an ERA above 3.00?
