Game Thread: Reds at Astros — 2009.04.19

Edinson Volquez is going to pitch great today and the Reds are going to guarantee at least a split in this four-game series. You can watch the game if you want, and you can discuss it here if you want, but I’ve already told you how it’s going to turn out, so why bother?

In other news, Jay Bruce is day to day, but then, aren’t we all? He wants to play tomorrow, but Dusty says it will more likely be Tuesday before Bruce is back in the lineup.

Today’s starting lineups are below. The Baseball-Reference game preview is here (again, if you haven’t checked out these previews, you really must; tons of information). Enjoy the game!

CINCINNATI

HOUSTON

Even Carlos Lee covers more ground than Gonzalez.

i just don’t know how all these guys can be so off right now. what’s happening? i never thought that the reds were going to have much of an offense, but why are brandon and ede both hitting below .200?

    this is just silly.

Two line shots that inning by Votto and Phillips, just hitting into bad luck now.

Nats outfield (Dunn, Dukes, Kearns) today:

    5 for 7 with 4 BB, 2RBIs, 1 run scored

this made me laugh and If I use this math and go a little further

Lee covers more ground than Gonzo
Dunn covers more ground than Lee
Dunn should be the Reds SS!

volquez on the other hand looks pretty sharp. that’s refreshing.

There’s still plenty of room for improvement with 5 BBs and 104 pitches through 6 IP.

What is surprising about Phillips and EE hitting below .200??
Neither one is a high average type hitter. Phillips has a career .261 avg and EE a .265
Both are seeing the ball because they are walking and getting on base
and it’s only been 10 games. Hell even Bonds and Pujols have bad 10 day streaks.
I’ll also add that last year EE hit .172 in May and Phillips .212 in August. Crappy averages for an entire month from both of them. So 10 days and they are getting on base? Nothing at all to worry about

The problem is the lineup doesn’t have many good hitters, so if one or two of our main guys aren’t crushing the ball the entire offense will go south.

while i agree that we can’t get too worked up about early averages, i do think that career .260s means that you can be surprised when someone is 0 for everything for weeks.

these are pretty bad slumps for ede, brandon, hairston, gonzo. it’s just a lot of guys to be slumping at the same time is all i’m saying.

Re: these guys being off so much…

I think the important thing is that they have gotten key hits when they need them and are winning close games. Barring injuries I actually think the Reds may be .500 this year

  • Owings is our best pinch hitter, bar none. Sad for the rest of the team, but at least we have one guy who has multi-base hit capabilties!

  • You know what’s interesting about the Reds hitting. The entire organization isn’t hitting. The # of hitters from the bigs down to low A with an OPS over .800 is a very short list

Here are the only hitters in the entire organization with an OPS over .800 so far this season

    Catchers
    OPS
    .813 W Castillo (AAA)
    .812 Denove (AA)

    2B/3B/SS
    1.251 Rosales 3B (AAA)
    .869 Cozart SS (AA)

    OF
    1.254 Heisey CF (AA)
    .883 Cumberland CF (AA)
    .874 Dickerston LF (Majors)

    1B
    1.059 Day DH (L-A)
    1.057 Votto (Majors)
    .808 Bankston DH (AAA)

Maybe he can play shortstop. Something tells me he’d make Harang less angry – at least he’d get a hit every now and then to help the offense…and he can’t move much slower than Gonzalez in the field.

  • Jared

I bet Owings could play 1B or LF just fine. Isn’t he more valuable as a well above average hitter than as a #5 starter?

    ReplyReply
  • Maybe he could pitch his standard 5 innings of ball, and then move to a fielding position once his arm tires out – keep his bat in the lineup!

And he does it again! 4.1 scoreless innings for Weathers. Gotta hand it to him, I guess. I doubt he’ll continue to go scoreles with guys on 2nd and 3rd every time he pitches, though.

to the comments above, i think owings would more valuable as an above average hitter than a 5th starter, but no one knows if he really would an above average hitter. his stats come from a very small sample size and most pitchers have treated him like a pitcher at the plate.

a few months in the big leagues, with real scouting and video on him, and he could look pretty average or below. I think he’d need to go to the minors for a while first. Is it worth losing a decent 5th starter for a minor league outfielder who may or may not work out in the bigs?

i don’t know, it really could be, his stroke looks great.

    also, Reds Win!

First time poster. Those were the worst two consecutive at bats I’ve seen in my life.

Look at the first strike; foul off a breaking pitch; look at the third strike. WTF?
