Titanic Struggle Recap

FINAL
New York Mets 6
Cincinnati Reds 8
WP: Bronson Arroyo (1-0)
LP: Oliver Perez (0-1)
S: CoCo (1)
BOX SCORE

Positives
–Reds win! Reds win! First victory (of many, we hope) of the 2009 season.
–Do you like Joey Votto? I do. (3-5, HR, 2 runs, 4 RBI)
–The bullpen. Again, with the exception of one reliever, a really nice job. Specific kudos need to go to Arthur Rhodes, who has been simply magnificent in the first three games, and my old nemesis David Weathers. (Okay, Bill, I’ll say it: he’s a stud!)
–Fast Willy Taveras was only 1-4, but he did take a base on balls. That’s a positive.
–Beating Oliver Perez? That’s a new one on me.
–The Mets are a very good team. We didn’t win the series, but we really battled and had chances to win every game. I’m going to count that as a positive.

Slight Negatives
–Our Gold Glover, Brandon Phillips, made his first error of the year. I don’t have any worries whatsoever about BP’s defense, though; just ignore today’s error.
–Not a good performance by Jared Burton. He’s another guy I’m not too worried about.

Etc.
–Bronson Arroyo’s performance: neither a positive or a negative. He struggled at times, but he really battled. I’m hopeful that he’s going to be okay. If nothing else, despite a lot of hits and runs, Arroyo threw fewer pitches in six innings than Volquez or Harang threw in five.
–HAVOC alert! The Reds stole their first base of the season. Anyone else surprised that it was swiped by Edwin Encarnacion?
–Speaking of EE, he really needs to be hitting 2nd. Or 4th. Do you hear me, Dusty?
–Darnell McDonald: he contributed to the win today. Good for him. (Still no excuse for him batting second, but that’s not his fault. He’s trying.)
–Paul Janish was completely overmatched in three of his ABs, but he got a key single. Any offensive contribution from Janish is icing; he’s here because of his outstanding glove.
–As was noted in the game thread, the Reds got back into the game on the strength of walks and a three-run homer. Wasn’t that was everyone was complaining about before this year?

Looks as if the havoc isn’t whats gonna win ball games…
why do you think the yanks were so good when they got Babe Ruth?
because he brought the long ball! no havoc.
Bruce is worrying me… i expected more from him this early…

Personally, no. And I don’t think I am alone. The actual problem is when that is the only dimension your offense has. The team scored 15 runs, only 6 of which came on the long ball in the last two games. I’m not saying that this team will necessarily be any different, but you are mischaracterizing the complaint. My complaint was the feast or famine nature of prior year’s offensive makeup.

“A positive?” When Adam Dunn put up those numbers people on here gushed.

Jose, Bruce will be fine…He has faced 2 LHP, one of which is at the top of all of baseball, and he got a nice hit off of him. Bruce will pick it up if the guys below him give him some protection and he gets better pitches to hit.

The problem the last few years was hitting HR’s with nobody on base and making outs with guys on. Votto has hit his two with two guys on…

  • I don’t remember anyone complaining about walks and three run home runs.

  • Unless you are talking about the lack of walks and three run home runs?

Joey Votto is a beast. Bruce will be fine. Remember, he’s 4 years younger than Votto.

I watched the game on tv and wanted to add two things.

Taveras’ single was a beautiful bunt down the third base line. If he can keep taking walks and bunting like that, he could easily OBP .360 and be a real asset.

McDonald’s OF defense is terrible. Ryan Church hit two doubles, both of which possibly could have been caught by a real major league left fielder (maybe someone named Dickerson?) The second hit was tough, but the first one absolutely should have been caught and directly led to the first 3 runs. He’s got no business being on the roster, but if he’s going to be, HE SHOULDN’T BE STARTING OR PLAYING THE FIELD.

Unrelated, but have there been any comments about the new scoreboard? My brother and his friend, who have been to a fair number of stadiums, say it’s the second best they have seen, behind only Kansas City.

The Mets’ lineup 1-6 is as good of a lineup there is in baseball, yet we still competed. I think Cueto is going to shut down the Pirates. I’m actually pretty excited to watch him pitch tonight (I hope the rain stays away). I’ve got a good feeling about Cueto this year.

when are the Reds going to be smart and sign Joey Votto to an Evan Longoria type contract?

    ReplyReply
  • Jose

    “somethingbetter”
Probably not because the reds don’t know how to be smart

Hmmm, Jose, they drafted Votto in the first place. That was pretty smart.

  • Perez has a career 4.02 ERA vs the Reds. That’s not THAT dominating.
    It’s good but not great

Compare that to some of the pitchers who the Reds almost never hit

Smoltz is on pitcher I swear the Reds never hit.
He’s 19-11 2.97 ERA w/8 complete games and 3 shutouts vs the Reds in his career

Zambrano is 14-9 with a 3.03 ERA against the Reds. the 14 wins is the most he has against any team.

and everyone knows which pitcher dominates the Reds the most right? He was the cause of one of the most embarrassing Reds moments in recent history were the Reds threw out a AAA lineup against him and he almost struck out everyone.
Randy Johnson has a stunning 1.51 ERA vs the Reds in 10 starts. striking out an AMAZING 113 Reds in 77 2/3 IP

    who could forget this
Arizona Diamondbacks IP H R ER BB SO
    R Johnson 9 3 1 1 0 20

and it would be hard to argue this wasn’t one of the worst Reds lineups ever fielded
    Sadler – LF
    Castro – 1B
    Larkin – SS
    Ochoa – RF
    Boone – 3B
    Rivera – CF
    Reese – 2B
    Stinnett – C

  • Heck, I could probably get 15K’s with that lineup. Yuck.

Are you forgetting how much Roy Oswalt crushes the Reds? Ridiculous.

  • Wow Josh, I didn’t realize…23-1 with a 2.47 ERA. Holy crap.

The Reds actually should have won that game against Johnson, too. They were up most of the game 1-0 and I thin Graves blew the save in the 9th inning.

The Reds absolutely should have won that 20K game against Johnson.
They went ahead 3-1 in extra innings (top of the 11th, I think) and then lost 4-3 in the bottom of the inning. I think Graves blew it in that extra inning, somebody look it up !
