Edinson Volquez makes his 2009 debut tonight against the Metropolitans, and I’m probably not the only one anxious to get a look at Volquez. Last year, he was spectacular, and I’m extremely interested in seeing how he looks early this season.
The Mets counter with Mike Pelfrey, a right-hander who had a pretty good year in 2008. Pelfrey will be facing a lineup without Willy Taveras again, as you can see here.
John Fay is betting that the Reds “break” the all-time Great American Ballpark attendance record tonight…by which, he means that he thinks this will be the smallest crowd ever seen at the GAB. We’ll find out soon enough; I will be in my warm living room watching all the action.
I will also be right here, discussing the game. Join me, won’t you?

John Fay says that The Reds still haven’t heard if Jonny Gomes will report to AAA. Mark Sheldon, however, reports that Gomes has accepted the assignment.
I’m assuming that he has. As I mentioned on the podcast, I think he’ll be back in Cincinnati very soon.
Glad to hear that. Now let’s get him back on the big league roster.
Haha
Espn reported it on fantasy report
and said IF he can get his bat back into gear he’ll be back by mid summer
Looks like WJ took a gamble and won. I still don’t understand the reasoning behind the gamble though. In any case, I’ll be happy to not comment on Gomes for a while.
As for tonite: GO REDS !!!!
I live in NY, plenty of reason to hate the Mets and the Yankees, the hype is unbelievable.
No FSOH telecast and MLB Extra Innings has it blacked out. So much for their free preview through April 12. It bites.
But at least you have a cool new avatar, Jim.
So if Willy is still sick tomorrow will Baker play McDonald against Perez or will he give Dickerson a shot at playing against lefties?
You can’t go wrong with Bullwinkle,
Great catch by Gonzo
Walks will haunt. Delgado crushes a two run homer.
We’re down two runs. That might be an insurmountable lead.
Tonight’s game is the first excitement I’ve had about the Reds in about a year.
I just watch my first Reds pitch since they traded Dunn.
Why am I excited? Volquez!!
I think if the Reds can figure out a way to score for him he can get Cy Young votes this year. I also have been disapointed recently in some picks made by people who usually know what they are talking about for season end awards and Volquez is never mentioned as getting Cy Young votes. For example, over at Baseball Prospectus they had their writers make their picks and here is the Cy Young vote projection.
NL Cy Young
1. Tim Lincecum, Giants 10, 38 (5)
2. Johan Santana, Mets 8, 34 (6)
3. Rich Harden, Cubs 3, 9 (1)
4. Brandon Webb, D’backs 4, 6
5. Jake Peavy, Padres 2, 4
6. Yovani Gallardo, Brewers 2, 4
7. Chad Billingsley, Dodgers 2, 4
8. Cole Hamels, Phillies 2, 4
9. Ted Lilly, Cubs 1, 3
10. Dan Haren, D’backs 1, 1
11. Derek Lowe, Braves 1, 1
I’m thinking he’ll be 16-10 with a 3.48 ERA which would get votes. GO VOLQUEZ!
It’s also interesting to note in their picks that Votto GETS MVP votes!
Does anyone know the reasoning behind the off day after Opening Day?
I agree with you, Mike. Volquez is one of the biggest reasons to watch this team this year. He just HAS it.
Leadoff single by Hairston…that looks like the Hairston we saw last year. Good job working the count and ultimately getting on.
Hey, Jim…you’re second in the commenting race. You need to get to work.
Jimmy,
So they have a day to make up the game after Opening Day snows out.
Nice poke, Joey!
Remember when I said a two run lead was insurmountable?
Joey Votto begs to differ! Three run homer, still no outs in the first inning.
Watching a game on MLB Gamecast lacks something but still JOEY!!!
Nice ABs all around!!!!
This team is an offensive juggernaut. BP with a double on the first pitch. Can’t believe BP swung at the first pitch, but I’ll take those results.
Won’t be tonight, Jimmy. No game on FSOH and MLB Extra Innings is blacked out.
Yea Votto…He could have a great year if guys get on in front of him like that!
“So they have a day to make up the game after Opening Day snows out.”
serious? or were you joking?
I’ve always wondered why there is a day off after Opening Day as well. That Tuesday is one of my least favorite days of the year! I usually wait all winter for baseball to return, get exited, love opening day and then Tuesday is a letdown when there is no Reds game.
I’m also still bitter about the fight between ESPN and Marge that caused opening day (notice lower case) to be changed and ESPN having a game on Sunday.
Great AB by Edwin.
I am liking the patient AB’s by EE so far this year…Could he break out this year finally.
Howes,
Yes, I was joking. And I agree that I hate that Tuesday afterwards. Although I’ve been to a couple rainouts and the game where the umpire had the heart attack, and it was nice to have the makeup game the next day.
Yeah, that Tuesday is the worst.
EE and Dickerson better cut it out….they are going to get benched for clogging the bases
Really, a pretty good AB by Volquez so far.
Wow, 4 runs in the first – that’s a better start. Hopefully that will be enough for Volquez – it usually is.
Hope you’re right.
Odds that 4 runs is the highest total for one inning at the end of the season?
Good, quick inning…gotta love that!
bjublejr I agree, EE could really break out this season.
Everything is right for him to, he’s 26, just entering his prime and has a couple years experience.
Getting a little geeky about it, PECOTA projections give him a 38% chance of a breakout season. That is a HUGE chance.
His projections for this season are some of the best on the Reds. PECOTA has him putting up the same #s as Longoria and among the top 10 hitting 3B in baseball. I don’t think he’ll ever be the defender Longoria is but here if he hits around the same as Longoria, Glaus and Zimmerman wow.
I hate having to listen to Brantley….no Chris Welsh tonight.
Welsh is on WLW right now…
Welsh is great on the radio…I enjoy him just about as much as anyone else.
Brandon draws a WALK!! Dr. Thom and Dr. Jeff are proclaiming that Bronson does NOT have carpeltunnel..
Thank you for the free base
Shoot, I set up my DVR through the directv guide online. They had the game listed on the wrong channel! So I missed the first 2 1/2 innings. Maybe if they would get HellBoy out of the way on the commercials, they would have the guide set up right!
Boy, I thought Jay’s ball was out…just missed it.
That is giving a run away in that inning. Phillips on 2nd with no outs and can’t get him in…Gotta convert those…especially for this team.
Brantley may be the most annoying person on the planet…he simply NEVER shuts up.
Bill, that is why I am listening to the Radio rather than watching tonight…I feel your pain, I can’t stand him either.
I’m watching the Mets broadcast. One benefit: HD. Second benefit: no Brantley.
It’d be interesting to watch the Reds on another feed, get the other team’s comments on the Reds players.
Chad, why are your comments a different color background?
Where is Dick Pole…calm him down
Because I’m special, Bill.
Young pitchers can be a trial….ugh. I agree with Brantley though, letting Pelfrey hit here is surprising..
Actually, in the new theme we have, the post author’s comments show up in a different color, for whatever reason.
I will let you post a game thread sometime. Then you can be special too.
On MLB.TV they have the WLW broadcast synced up to the video. It’s nice.
Another great play by Edwin!
whew…85 pitches already, one more inning, maybe
Chad, you know I’m “special”…
I think that was a terrible call by Manuel…Gotta go to the bench there. I think that speaks VOLUMES to what he thinks about the Reds lineup. He feels that the Reds aren’t scoring much/any more runs.
and/or trying to save his bullpen…day game tomorrow.
True Bill, but Perez is pitching tomorrow and for his career he owns the Reds. I just think in that situation even with two outs the Mets had a great chance for a big inning with who they had coming up.
I’d feel better with about three more runs.
I agree with you, just throwing his possible thinking out there…
Anyone do ESPN’s Streak For The Cash?
I picked the Reds today.
Sorry if you are having trouble loading the site today. Our host is terrible. I will be changing hosts within a week, and I don’t expect these problems to occur after that.
So much for the improved defense
Why do that in that situation!? Why??
So much for the improved fundementals
“Why do that in that situation!? Why??”
Duh! HAVOC!!!
HAVOC!!!
Hairston is already hurt?
This team can be so frustrating…But we are still in it right now…Let’s get to this kid!
As for the announcers comments, I can’t stand listening to Keith Hernandez. I just keep hoping a woman shows up in the dugout.
yeah I live in nyc and between keith hernandez on the mets broadcast and the yankees radio announcers it is hard to believe that a big money franchise can’t do better than the people they have.
well atleast Ramon Hernandez and big willy are playing well.
I met that woman once. She was very nice. A Very valued member of the Padres staff.
So if Dusty is planning on using a double switch after McDonald’s at bat wouldn’t it make sense in an RBI situation to use Micah Owings. I mean think about it, Owings won’t be facing the dominate lefty in johan santana and runners are in scoring position to tie or even possible take the lead. instead he keeps a light hitting guy in to hit and then takes him out on defense? I thought defense was his specialty.
I was just ordered downstairs so my wife can watch American Idol.
Don’t have HD down here, so I’m watching the Reds broadcast. Geez, Brantley is annoying. “Louisiana breakdown.”
They have to get rid of this guy already.
No TV in Columbus – Blue Jackets and Tribe instead. The play-by-play doesn’t bode well for pitching, defense, and havoc. Gonzales with an error, and apparent goofiness on the double steal with EE at bat. What went on there?
Hernandez just let a ball roll through his legs at home. The fundamentals don’t really seem all that improved.
Havoc, Chris, Havoc…That is all
just Dusty being Dusty
Bruce took off on a steal for 2nd. Pelfrey did the ol’ fake to first to third move that NEVER WORKS. Well, it worked this time.
I just think down one run you can’t take the bat out of EE’s hands by stealing with a runner on third. Just doesn’t make sense.
Oh My! Wow…Keeps on getting worse by the minute…
Oh my
The more things change, the more they stay the same.
Brantley told Baker that EE wasn’t clutch, so Baker tried to stir up some HAVOC!
Did McDonald get hurt, i’m confused on the double switch that just happened?
And I disagree with Thom and Brantley from the mid-6th inning. They said there was still a long way to go…4 more innings for the Reds at the plate…except with the Mets new bullpen, Putz & K-Rod on the back end, the Mets have effectively shortened a lot of their games to 7 innings.
I have a feeling Dusty is going to be much more annoying this year, given his mandate to pull levers, push buttons, and such.
FSN OH doesn’t show the Reds game in Columbus? Is that a cable TV issue or is that true on Sat Dishes, too?
Looks like the same old Reds to me.
3 hits for Votto! I love Votto!
I’m still optimistic. It is only two games but with them being a young team the first month is critical to keep the confidence up.
I might get excited about a Phillies-type comback here if I knew more than the middle of the order could hit.
i have to say, while this game has been hard to watch, brandon phillips looks a lot better at the plate than he did last year.
going opposite field, taking pitches. he looks like a tough out all of a sudden. (in two games, i know).
Tying run at the plate… SEND UP OWINGS
Good grief, shut up Brantley.
7 walks thus far
Willy Taveras not too sick to pinch hit evidently…
…and a triple. Man, that guy can fly!
Wow…and he tagged up on a short fly ball to left! HAVOC!
its shame willy is to sick to play.
Good job by Arthur Rhodes. Now, let’s score some runs.
Too many walks and mistakes to win this one. The Reds let one get away from them today. I know it’s not quite over yet….but I’m heading to bed.
Yeah, Arthur Rhodes has looked really good in the first two games.
Why is BP trying to bunt?
Phillips with a walk! Anything is possible!!
BP with another walk? Sweet. Now tie it up, Bruce!
HAVOC!!!
Dumb baserunning by Phillips. Yeah, he’s safe, but he’s just the tying run. Why take that chance, when it could have been the final out of the game?
But the Mets have a brain cramp, and now the winning run is at the plate. Unfortunately, his name is Ramon Hernandez.
Oh wow!
mega havoc!
“Too many walks and mistakes to win this one.”
Are you talking about the Reds or the Mets?
I meant to say Phillips wasn’t even the tying run. Just stupid.
C’mon, RAMON!!!!
14 balls and 6 strikes for FRod so far.
“Dumb baserunning by Phillips. Yeah, he’s safe, but he’s just the tying run”
See Chad, ESPN isn’t going to cite their HAVOC source, if you’re not going to buy into it.
I was thinking the same thing. His run would have only cut the lead to one. 9 times out of 10 that kind of play ends the game.
You’re right, Greg. I need to fully buy into the HAVOC!
Who here was saying that the Reds should have targeted RH OFer Nelson Cruz, Rangers, in the offseason? He’s hit two bombs this evening.
That curve and changeup just thrown by Rodriguez were two of the nastiest pitches I’ve ever seen.
Gonzo has to put the ball in play there
Darn.
Darn, I really thought Laynce Nix was the kinda guy that can make the big play there…. Good call sending Gomes down to AAA. Thank goodness he accepted…
