Tom Browning jailed

From this AM’s Enquirer:

Jail records show Cincinnati Reds minor league pitching coach Tom Browning has been charged with nonpayment of child support.

The former Reds star, who threw a perfect game in 1988, was arrested on Friday.

He is being held in the Sarasota County Jail until he is either taken to Polk County, where he owes the child support, or pays the $99,008.36 that he owes.

I have no idea what this means in terms of his future with the Reds organization (and I won’t even go into what I think of deadbeat parents), but a shuffling of the Reds minor league coaching staff appears imminent to me.

UPDATE: I have been told by a good source that there will be some shuffling of pitching coaches in the system, but that the names have not yet been announced.

  • He was just waiting til it reached $100k. You ever try to write a check for $99,008.36?? He probably tore up 3 checks just trying to write that out in cursive. Cut the guy some slack.

  • Funny Sultan, the 8 dollar and 36 cent portion of the money owed was the first thing I noticed too! I wonder how much that extra 36 cents matters when the check is $99,000?

Eke. I hope he works this out.
Wasn’t one of his kids born during his World Series game?

Sheish. 1990 was 19 years ago. I’m getting old.

Tigers just released Gary Sheffield. I say pick him up and stick him between Bruce and Votto. Thoughts?

    And play him where?

Stick him in left. At the worst he’s Gomes’ defensive equal.

    BIG NO TO GARY!!!!!!

Sheffield hit .225 with 19 HRs last year, is 40 years old and a pain in the butt who couldn’t play defense when he was 35.

Excluding the pain in the butt, didn’t we trade the left handed version of that last year.

Agree with Mark… signing Sheffield is the antithesis of parting ways with Griffey and Dunn. Havoc jokes aside, if this team is going in with a plan, it’d be nice to see them stick to it for once.

Sheffield played injured all of last year. He is healthy now. In 2007 he went 20/20 with a .380 OBP and scored 100+ runs. The two negatives are his attitude and his defense. Addressing 1) Toothpick Baker is one of the best in the game at handling troublesome players (see Bonds, Barry and Kent, Jeff) and 2) He’d be no worse in LF than Gomes or Dunn. Everyone is worried about how the Reds are going to score runs. Here’s a potential solution. Give him an incentive-laden contract with a lose base salary for one year, let him rake and leave as a FA after the season when Alonso is ready for 1B and Votto can move to LF.

If we can sign him for peanuts, maybe it’s worth a shot. The dude could hit. Can he still? Intrigue….

I’m starting to like the chemistry for this team. Sheffield would only screw it up.

I agree, don’t damage the chemistry before it has a chance to fully develope among the young players!
