WBC In-Game Chats

Johnny Cueto is starting for the D.R. against Panama.  So far, he’s throwing the ball hard, but all over the place.

Team USA plays tonight.

Use this thread to discuss both.

  • Cueto had a scare earlier with the foot/ankle. Seems to be fine though. Go Panama though, I would like to see our pitchers back in Reds camp.

Can’t wait for the game later tonight. I have problems I guess, but I love the WBC.

I agree, Doug. I would love to see Cueto pitch well for 3-4 innings. (He seems to have settled down through 3)

Then have Panama blow up for 8 runs and send the DR home early. Want to see Cueto and Volquez back soon, probably more than any of the other players we have in the WBC.

  • Wily Taveras with a hard grounder that plates a run on an ‘error’ that in my opinion should have been ruled a hit. The announcers of the game agree with me.

Agreed, it looked like a legit hit.

Our “fast” guy is proving to be an absolute idiot on the bases. Just ran through the stop sign into an out at the plate. Would’ve been on third with 1 out.

Indeed, did anyone see if that havoc was encouraged by the third base coach or Willie’s own decision?

You might say our “fast” guy is a bit “slow”?

He ran through the stop sign, according to Gary Thorne and Steve Phillips.

  • Looks like Cueto will use all of his allowed pitches with a 5 run lead…..

    71 pitches, and done.

    Nice day, overall.

Does it concern anyone else that he threw 71 pitches? Volquez didn’t throw that many yesterday. I’m not watching the game, how did he look at the end?

  • Apparently the Reds requested Volquez only throw 60 pitches. No word if they requested that on Cueto though. Cueto looked fine at the end though.

  • NYC: In my estimation, Cueto looked better as the game went on.

Yeah, he looked to be throwing easier at the end than the beginning. And he retired 8 of the last 9 guys he faced.

    USA game is on

I forgot how annoying Rick Sutcliffe can be.

Dunn K’s on 3 straight strikes looking. That should make “some” happy.

Do you think the sound guy has the crowd turned all the way up??? It sounds really loud, but there’s no one in the stands. I guess MLB wants us to believe the WBC is really popular.

  • I noticed that too BenL. It sounds like a World Cup match with a full stadium – but there’s clearly hardly anyone there.

  • Rick Sutcliffe carrying on about how there is no way Oswalt should come out right before giving up the 2 run single is classic.

  • Adam Dunn is a base clogger. Oh wait….

  • Adam Dunn with a long bomb. What a base clogger. We need less of that kind of stuff and more HAVOC.

I’m excited that at least I can watch Dunn in person on a regular basis since I live in DC…. Of course I’ll be wearing my Dunn jersey from when he was on the Reds

  • Dunn thinks he deserves some web gems. Glad to hear him say he’s “trying to drop that (bad fielding) label.” For all the talk of his bad attitude, I’ve never actually heard him say anything that suggests a poor attitude. I’ll be rooting for Dunn all season…and wishing the Reds still had him.

I am liking the WBC more and more. I just don’t like the pitcher concerns, but as far as games go, it has been fun to watch. The only two players of the Reds that are playing that concern me is Volquez and Cueto. I’d like Ramon to get back early as well to work with the staff, but of course half of the staff pitches for the DR.

Yeah the interview with Dunn was pretty cool and he made a few good points. Good for him

With the competiton for the 5th starting spot heating up in camp, since he has options, Cueto better pitch well.

all this talk of cueto being on the bubble for the 5th spot are ridiculous, he’s in, and hal mccoy should know better than to start rumors like that.

the guy put up a near league average era in 174 major league innings, he probably has better stuff than anyone on the staff, he was 22, and he hasn’t given up a run in a reds st game, or the wbc.

so what’s the question? homer bailey is reportedly throwing 91-92 and has done pretty well in the first week of spring training (before any cuts), after years of getting rocked at the big league level. how does that put him in the running with cueto?

last year in the spring, everyone thought cueto was going to be the one, not volquez. volquex put it together quicker because he had more experience, but i still think cueto may have more potential.

that’s not to say that i’m not excited by homer bailey’s success. i hope he can become a major leaguer someday. but that’s a lot different from my excitement about cueto, who already is a major leaguer, and has the potential to be a great one.
