I know we all have differing opinions of the World Baseball Classic. However, it is definitely nice sitting here today, watching some real live baseball on t.v.!
The Dominican Republic is currently down 3-2. Willy Taveras failed to score on a wild pitch that could have tied the game for the D.R. earlier in the game. However, he is 1-2 with 2 walks in the leadoff spot today. The United States plays at 2:00!
Discuss the games here!

I thought he was fast.
That’s very unhavoc-y.
A taste of havoc to come, I’m afraid…
Votto singles in the first for Team Canada.
Taveras got gunned by a mile at 3rd in the 9th. Wasn’t even close. So he got on base 4 times out of 5, but his non score in the 5th and then getting thrown out in the 9th could have cost them the win!
HAVOC!
Maybe Dusty wants to rethink who is hitting 4th. That was a bomb.
No joke. I’m rooting for the USA, but if Canada wins with a good performance from Votto I’m a happy man!
I think I posed the question the last time the held this thing:
If the game came to the 9th, with Canada down 1 and 2 on. Would you want Votto to hit a homer to win the game, or have him get out and secure a US win?
I’d be pulling for Votto probably.
Yeah, I think I’d be pulling for Votto. My first loyalty is to the Reds, not the USA.
(Don’t tell Joe McCarthy.)
I’d prefer the US wins big, Dunn hits 4 homers and Votto has a big day in a losing effort for Canada…
The ideal result might be if Dunn climbed the wall in right to rob Votto and end the game…
If the Dominican team faces the US in the finals and Volquez or Cueto are pitching I think I’d be rooting for the DR also.
One unrelated thought: It’s interesting that Canada has produced a number of the top hitters in the league, but no top pitchers. What’s up with that?
Dunn and Votto having outstanding games thus far. The two have accounted for more offense than the Reds offense has produced the last two days.
On the Reds front, another nice outing by Homer Bailey. Anyone know his pitch count today?
Votto with a broken bat double to cut the lead to 1. WOW 4-5 with 2 singles, a double, and hr for Votto
…against some of the best pitchers in the league!
i’m glad joey votto is a red. He’s a pro hitter. good job to dunn as well. I’m glad the USA won, but it was hard for me not to root for Votto. Haha, especially since he was crushing the ball.
I hope the DR is knocked out in two games so Volquez and Cueto get back to Sarasota.
Does anyone else here think Volquez needs to do something about that hair?
and that’s Joey Votto, left fielder….just sayin’.
Gotta beat out Jerry Hairston first.
Observations from the WBC for the day:
1.) Joey Votto is awesome and I am happy he is a Red.
2.) I love watching Dunn crush the ball and get on base, and wish he was still a Red.
3.) Willy Taveras is an idiot and I wish he wasn’t a Red.
4.) The Italian team has to be horrible if Chris Denorfia is their 5 hitter.
5.) I can’t believe nobody has picked up Pudge or Pedro yet. Pedro as a closer would be awesome.
6.) What the hell is wrong with the DR offense? They should be scoring at least 6+ runs a game.
- Votto was by far the best player I saw yesterday from any country and I’m not just saying that as a Red fan. (you could argue pudge with his two bombs).
- Tavares I think had a good game aside from his two base running blunders. If he gets on base like he did today then I’m happy he is a Red.
- I love how everyone has been talking bad about him and how the DR could have tied the game but he was on base and in scoring position most of the game and Hanley Ramirez and Ortiz seemed to hit into double play after double play and Ramirez’s error and horrible plate appearances lost the DR the game not Willy’s base running (can you tell i’m a Reds fan?)
- In New York the only highlights they show of the WBC from yesterday is Adam Dunn taking his pulse in the dugout and then hitting a home run (typical Dunn got a love it). But his type of game does frustrate me because he looks clueless half the time but that is just Dunn being Dunn and he is talented.
I know I just defended Willy in the above post but to answer #19’s post and question about the DR’s offense. All you have to do is look at the box score and my immediate question is why not play Jose Reyes at Second? They have a few guys in there lineup that when you look at their bench you just wonder why.
Canada’s lineup was pretty solid. If they could have got some of the pitchers from Cananda that chose not to play, Bedard, Dempster, etc they’d have a great chance. They could still surprise Venezuela in that bracket I think.
Must say I don’t much care for the players playing for countries they are loosely tied to. I think you are either born there or a citizen of, or you don’t play for them. Like Hairston with Mexico, or since when is Denorfia from Italy.
since when is Denorfia from Italy…
His paternal grandmother is full-blooded Italian. Qualifies him to play for Italy.
Thanks, Google.
Little scare with Cueto in the WBC today – seemed to roll the ankle slightly covering first base. He stayed in though and got the next two outs…
