First ST update

Received this email from Matt:

“First day went great today. Passed my arm strength test (only took 30 minutes, compared to 3 hours last year), which is required to start throwing, threw a great bullpen, and knocked the two mile out in 13.35.

I haven’t seen it with my own two eyes yet, but seems like everyone was raving about Yorman Rodriguez yesterday. He apparently ran a 6.3 60-yard dash a few days ago and is dropping bombs in BP.”

Nice to know Matt got off to a good start and we appreciate his keeping us informed on the goings-on in Sarasota.

  • Dang, great job on the two mile. BTW, what does an arm strength test consist of??

Basically, one of the trainers applies force to the arms at different angles and positions, and the player tries to resist. The level of resistance the player can demonstrate tells the trainer if the arm is strong enough to begin throwing and if so, how much.

If you want to read further I found a pretty informative article:

We do testing for the spine, legs, and arms…but arm strength is really the only things pitchers are ever scared of coming up short on.

Oh, I was pretty happy with a 6.45/mile pace, but check this out:

    Crazy fast.

I can’t even walk to the bathroom in less than 8 minutes. That is the equivalent of 4 minute miles, wow!!!

    Jonesy,

PBR = the lowest level of the beer totem pole.
Please try a nice Samuel Adams Boston Lager or Newcastle Brown Ale instead. Don’t be scared to have a sophisticated beer palate.

    George,

I am a fan of Yuenling, both because it has stayed true to form (family-owned) and is considered the oldest brewery in the US. I have heard there are older breweries in operation today, but Yuenling gets their distinction because these others were closed and cease operation during Prohibition.

I did discover one of my favorite places and beers when I was in Billings in ‘07. The Montana Brewing Company has a nice little brewery/tasting room and also produces a Whitetail Wheat which is pretty tasty. Moose Drool by the Big Sky Brewing Co. of Missoula ran a close second that summer.

Speaking of local favorites, has anyone checked out the Oliver Winery in Bloomington? Not all of their grapes are grown on site, but they still turn out some very good vintages.

Matt I haven’t been to Bloomington, but if I get there I’ll try Oliver. When you get to aaa and go to Rochester check out Casa Larga Winery , they have a wine called Tapestry which is a Merlot and Cabernet mix that tastes great
