Dusty Baker on Jermaine Dye

Our intrepid manager Dusty Baker says, yeah, he wants Jermaine Dye, but that Dye probably costs too much.

Those Dye talks aren’t dead. At least, that’s what I’m guessing. If Dye was the big bat to put the Reds over the hump it would be OK. But there would still be holes up the middle at catcher, short, and center. Why sacrifice some young talent, which is what it would take, for a one year rental when the playoffs are likely a pipe dream?

  • I can’t remember: Dusty does, or does not have influence on the roster. What’s his story this week?

McCoy is not letting the Dye for Bailey thing go…

And now he is writing about guys the Reds “should” go after (again trading Bailey…this time for Astros SS Miguel Tejada), not an actual rumor or discussion that the Reds have had.

“Another available righthanded power-hitter is Houston shortstop Miguel Tejada and the Astros are searching for a young starting pitcher. Bailey is 22 and a native Texan who resides in LaGrage.”

Dislike towards an individual player (Bailey) is obviously clouding his judgement. He needs to stick to reporting the news instead of trying to create it.

I kind of like this remark from Dusty regarding Dickerson.

“He’s had like four knee operations, one on one knee, one on the ankle.”

    ?????

  • When you have a knee operation on an ankle, that should DEFINATELY send up a red flag about the player…..

Did Kremcheck diagnose that, by the way?

Surf city, John Fay had the full quote,”He’s had four operations on one knee, two on the other, his shoulder and ankle. I like what I see but he’s got to stay healthy.”

Has Dickerson really had 4 operations on one knee alone?

    Phill, That makes more sense.

Doug over at Reds Minor Leagues might be able to shed light on Dickerson’s injury history.

His ankle surgery was at the end of this season. His minor league stats don’t show that he’s missed a lot of games.

I think they play 25-35 fewer games in the minors. Looks like he had a full season in 2007, 115 games in 2006, 119 games in 2005 and 99 games in 2004. I don’t see a lot of lost playing time related to all those surgeries.

Maybe Baker got his injuries/surgeries mixed up again like he did with Bruce in spring training?
