see the Yanks signed Swisher. I think this is a smart move. He just had an off season. He can replace Giambi or Abreu and play four positions. He could also be some additional bait to get Texiera.
I saw that the Reds signed Ben Davis for some catching depth. Also, Baseball America has listed the Minor League Free Agent list. I haven’t had a chance to look it over closely yet, but it is always fun to look over for hidden gems. The Reds could sure use some more depth at C, SS, and in the OF. There are a lot of former Reds organization members on the list.
Since this is an open thread: remember what Ben Davis did to Schilling’s perfect game? He caught Hell for laying down a drag bunt to spoil it. The way I look at it was that the score was only 2-0 and Tony Gwynn was available to hit. You had a chance to win, so go for it. That started quite a bitter feud between the Pads and the D’backs. Maybe we need a good ol’ fashioned feud to bring back some energy. Maybe Harang can bean Zambrano.
Tom – Val Majewski is an interesting name on that list that the Reds should be contacting. Missed all 2005 after having shoulder surgery on a torn labrum and had trouble bouncing back in the Orioles organization. Looks like he got his power stroke back last year.
Here’s what we know. Walt is talking to every team. He has untouchables two of which are Cueto and Volquez. The Reds don’t appear to be in on the top 10 FAs.
I’d like the Reds to trade two of Harang, Arroyo, Co-Co.
I’d like the Reds to trade for a young 27 or under RH LF instead of moving one of EdE or Votto. Guys I’d target are Alex Rios, Mark Teahen, Chase Headley, Delmon Young or Matt Kemp (or the more acquirable Xavier Paul).
I’d like the Reds to sign Nick Punto and Juan Cruz. In addition, I’d like to see them bring back Affeldt and Hairston Jr.
I wonder if the Giants offered a shot at the rotation? He also might be thinking that Wilson might choke and he has an opportunity to be a closer. My guess is one of those things happened or he got a lot of cash to settle this quickly.
As Joe Sheehan (on Baseball Prospectus) pointed out recently, there’s a lot that plays into these decisions that we know absolutely nothing about, and never will.

I like that one, nice find. Here are a few more names I wouldn’t mind seeing getting signed and invited to spring training to add some OF depth. Brian Stavisky, John-Ford Griffin, and Jon Knott.

“Rumor has it” that the Indians are interested in Affeldt, possibly as even a closer.
Rumor has it that the Fish are potentially moving Jeremy Hermida.
Would the Reds be uninterested just because he’s left handed?

A Majewski with shoulder problems? What could go wrong?
Just an uninformed smart-mouth comment on my behalf. It was obvious, so I took it….
I’d like to talk about Marty’s hair. It’s shiny and silver like a fine lamp shade.

Cranberry and walnut cookies are good at this time of year.
John Fay is reporting that Ben Davis was signed as a pitcher. He pitched a little Independent League ball at the end of last season and will be trying out for the Reds AA pitching staff.
The Brewers are whining about the Yankees overbidding on Sabathia. Boo-hoo for them.

Affeldt signed by the Giants.
Affeldt is now a San Francisco Giant so my idea of re-signing him goes out the window.
The Reds lack of moves is troubling. Lots of other teams have claimed players, traded for players or signed players and the Reds have done NOTHING.
Guess Reds management sees no need to improve.
The Lack of movement does worry me. Especially when a team as bad as the Giants was able to sign Affeldt away from us.
Affeldt signed a three year deal. That’s the one player of our free agents I was hoping to resign.
I wonder if the Giants offered a shot at the rotation? He also might be thinking that Wilson might choke and he has an opportunity to be a closer. My guess is one of those things happened or he got a lot of cash to settle this quickly.
Maybe Affeldt just likes San Francisco.
