Joey Votto named NL Rookie of the Month

Joey Votto has won the National League’s Rookie of the Month award for September. Now attention turns to the Rookie of the Year award. I’m not so sure why everyone assumes that Chicago catcher Geovany Soto should win:

Votto and the Cubs’ Soto are considered the two main contenders in Rookie of the Year voting, which has already been completed. Overall, Votto led all NL rookies with a .297 average and 24 home runs, and his 84 RBIs were second to Soto’s 86. Soto was second to Votto with a .285 average and 23 homers.

Go Votto.

  • i saw a post of a writer giving his postseason awards and he listed jay bruce as an “honorable mention” for rookie of the year and completely left votto off (also HMed jurjjens). Makes me sad when I could give a better try at giving an award than a pro writer.

  • Great news for Votto!

The Cubs are the NL’s version of the Yankees and Red Sox. They are fashionable and the media loves them. I agree that Soto plays a more important position (catcher) but still… if Votto were on the Cubs, he would be the media favorite.

Soto’s going to win ROTY, but at least the Cubs got swept in the NLDS. That makes me feel better.

Probably because Soto’s on the better team, plays a tougher (and usually not offensive=prone) position, and the Cubs are in the bigger market.

I think the biggest problem that I have with how the Rookie talk has gone down is exactly what Erik said at the top. Votto is literally forgotten. I can live without Votto getting the RoY award and it’s understandable why he most certainly won’t get it. I can’t live with the fact that he’s been completely ignored by the media. I think the only time I’ve seen his name mentioned outside of Cincinnati media was when he had the three home run game against the Cubs. I get the feeling he won’t even get runner up in the voting tallies which is just pathetic if it happens.

  • I have to apologize, the article i read was one from bob klapisch that FJM made fun of. In the article he does mention votto in the body of the paragraph about who the NL rookie is and mentions he had more homers and a better average. I was being lazy by just scanning his picks and reading the honorable mentions instead of reading the whole article. he then mentions soto, bruce and jurrjens as his honorable mentions (soto?) maybe he meant votto instead of soto there.

that said the media still has very little mention of votto. I remember watching a game on fox and the announcers were talking baseball awards and mentioned jurrjens but not votto. Also baseball tonight talked about it once and said soto was so far ahead of everyone else it didnt even matter or something like that. So it’s too bad the media can’t seem to figure out that non-contenders might have better picks for the postseason awards. Like should-be-mvp pujols over shouldnt-be-mvp howard.

Votto was great, but his defense was horrible at times. Soto for his contributions to the best team in the league deserves the award, but Votto is a strong second.

You have to blame the Cincy media and Reds media department abit. The same group that a few years ago did not list Harang on their Cy Young Ballot even though he led the league in wins and Ks.

There needs to be hype from the locals akin to what is done for Heisman trophy candidates. With Soto being a all star we needed a blitz from cincy to change the message. It happened too late for Votto.
