Maybe this, if for no other reason, should make us happy Walt is the GM and not Krivsky. It seems like Krivdawg got bullied and forced into decisions a lot (like signing Outterson in the first place) and may have been coerced into keeping him. Just a thought.
I don’t think anybody was coercing anybody into keeping him because of the public relations disaster they knew it would be to even talk to him or his agent.
“Ultimately, Patterson became the symbolic target and point man for much of the fans’ criticism of the club as it struggled through an eighth straight losing season.”
This is like the third article I’ve seen where the writer kinda makes it seem like the criticism was almost unwarranted. Sigh.
“Although Patterson started a team-high 82 games in center field and was superb defensively, he was sent down to Triple-A Louisville to sort out his swing in late May.“
We are already better! Now, hurry up and come the day Baker is gone…lest we not forget the fool who continued to run him out there in lead off positions, pinch-hitting him rather than Valentin and other such decisions. I felt sorry for him too as I do believe he tried but he was under such pressure to play at times I really believe that caused him to do worse. Dusty is the real problem but hopefully he’ll cut back on the mind-altering LSD laced toothpicks.
It got to the point I almost felt sorry for the guy. You cannot blame him for the fact the Reds kept running him out there.
agree, Patterson seemed to try and hustle but he’s lost whatever little skill he once had. Patterson being on this roster and playing so much POINTS DIRECTLY AT MANAGEMENT.
Patterson led all MLB center fielders on the Dewan Plus/Minus system for defense, and he absolutely saved a lot of runs having to cover for Dunn and Griffey in the alleys. He’s always been an excellent defensive player.
So what game were you watching? Not the same as those paid to do so. Obviously.
How much does anyone want to bet Patterson gets on with an AL team and has a semi-decent(for Patterson) year? He was seperated from Dusty in Baltimore and did ok. He got back with him and he had his worst year ever.It all probably stems back to how he was handled as a prospect coming up.
Adkins and Pettyjohn outrighted to Louisville today. Jolbert Cabrera was also outrighted but he refused the assignment and is now a free agent. The roster is now at 37. There are still the nine free agents and seven guys (including FAs Fogg and Mercker) on the 60 day DL who will affect the roster number soon.
Patterson did seem like a decent enough guy. A no-talent, decent enough guy, but decent none the less. That’s about the best thing I can say. Good luck, but good riddance.
I have nothing against Corey. I agree with GRF that it wasn’t his fault that Dusty kept running him out there. I was watching, and I agree with Sheldon that he’s a superb defensive center fielder, he especially was late in the season.
He lost his confidence somewhere along the line and tries too hard, he hustled into some dumb outs on base and presses at the plate. Good luck, Corey.

I know CP is a pretty good defender but I was so sick of the guy’s offensive black hole. Patterson defensive abilities illustrate how great defense is not an absolute essential. Good defense, yes. Great defense, not necessarily.
He was also no doubt the worst offensive CF in all of baseball. Maybe they’ll come up with a Designated Center Fielder for players like him since the AL has the Designated Hitter
Good riddance to Cory and Bako. But as long as Valentin is around to run out there to suck at catching once in a blue moon, or pinch hit once a game….and swing as hard as he can every time, I’ll still have someone to pick on. (And of course David “Stormy” Weathers, if we bring that old man back)

I just saw it on MLBTraderumors.com and I couldn’t be happier.

But Wayne kept him all year. Was he coerced?

Good beginning for 09.

Glad he is gone, but wish him well in his future, non-baseball career.

We’re already better!

Agreed GRF.

Was I watching the same games as Mark Sheldon?

Watch him go to the Cardinals and hit .300+ with a .390+ OBP next season.

Was I watching the same games as Mark Sheldon?
I guess we were not watching the same ones. Patterson botched more than a few but, hey, he’s fast.
October 7th, 2008 at 3:16 pm
Oh my God, he is fast, isn’t he? I regret everything I ever said. Patterson, please come back.

I wish Patterson the best of luck, but I’m relieved he won’t be a Red next year.

The only negative now is we will need two more people to pick on when there isn’t anything else going on.
October 8th, 2008 at 4:26 pm
Who will Dusty’s man-crush be on in 2009? I feel bad for Patterson too, not a bad guy but just mishandled by the crack (smoking) management staff.

Designated Fielder…I kill me!
October 9th, 2008 at 2:31 am
Mhopp, That’s classic. Who knows what will happen someday though ? In the old days of football, the same 11 guys played both offense and defense.
October 9th, 2008 at 7:31 pm
According to the list on mlbtraderumors.com, Corey Patterson is a Scott Boras client. Hahahaha

Rejoice, rejoice! There IS a God! The Cubs have lost and Corey Patterson has been shown the door!
