Well, it’s been quite a frustrating year, but I’m really sad that this is the last series of the 2008 season. On the other hand, ending this terrible year — the 8th straight losing season for our beloved Reds — means that we can put it behind us and try to hope that 2009 will be better.
Bronson Arroyo will make his final start of the season tonight, looking to notch his 16th win. Who would’ve thought Arroyo would have 16 wins, after the way he started out the season? Not me. So, yes, it’s true; I don’t know everything.
On the mound for the Cards is Braden Looper, who was on the mound for my favorite Joe Randa-related moment.
Discuss the game here.
Chad, what was the Joe Randa-related moment with Braden Looper? I read the post you linked and didn’t see anything.
Well looks like Arroyo’s good second half is over. Might as well let the kids pitch.
Playing MLB08 and beating Dan Harren 5-0 using Arroyo as I listen to this game. Of course I picked no Crappy P. (I can’t anyhow since he’s not on the team but certainly wouldn’t). My team lacks Jay Bruce but has Freel, Dunn and Griffey. I noticed the Reds franchise was rated #3 on the game…looks like they didn’t count on Patterson and Baker when they made that game.
Reds starter ERA since the all-star game
ERA W-L
3.13 8-4 Arroyo
4.60 5-3 Volquez
4.63 3-5 Harang
5.05 2-5 Cueto
7.22 1-5 Fogg
and here are some interesting season totals.
These are the # of starts for each pitchers where the pitcher had a game score >= 60 (this is a much better metric than the “quality start”)
Games w/ game_score >=60
14 Arroyo
13 Volquez
10 Harang
7 Cueto
1 Ramirez
What is shocking is that not a single game started by Fogg, Bailey, Belisle, or Thompson. In other words we got 1 really good start from our #5 starters and that was Ramirez.
I’d love to know if you replaced the 5 headed monster that was our #5 starter with a guy who had say a 4.75 ERA (not that great) how many more wins the team would have.
I think I’m going to enjoy watching Joey Votto and Jay Bruce next year. JV is definitely a second half player!
Is anybody watching who can make sense of this for me?
Edwin Encarnacion singles on a ground ball to left fielder Ryan Ludwick. Jeff Keppinger scores. Edwin Encarnacion out at 1st on the throw, left fielder Ryan Ludwick to catcher Jason LaRue to first baseman Albert Pujols.

Sorry, it was the Opening Day game when Randa, in his first game as a Red hit a homer in extra innings to win the game. Dunn and Junior had homers in that game (Dunn may have had two, can’t remember), and Dunn hit the homer to tie it in the bottom of the ninth. Amazing game, lots of fun.
Ooh. I guess it’s because I quit following the Reds for several years and started up again with opening day in 2006 and stopped being a cool artsy teenager who was too smart for spotted. Probably everyone else got the reference.
Speaking of Junior, I don’t think the White Sox want to win. They are getting killed tonight after blowing a big lead last night.
Ew. Arroyo gives up consecutive triples, the second one to the pitcher…
The Twins are getting killed too, though, so we’ll see. Bummer though that it looks like neither Junior nor Dunn will get their chance in October like they both wanted. More of a bummer for Junior, since it might be his last chance…
Pooperson with the standard 0 for 3. Anyone taking bets that he’ll play in the last game of season?
If Votto can have a big series this final weekend, he might make a serious case for himself for Rookie of the Year. He and Soto are now about dead even in HRs, runs, and RBIs. Votto has almost a ten jump advantage in BA.
and I just said yesterday, “why did Dusty leave LLM on the bench all year?” Another good clutch pinch hit by Valenten. I hope he gets a job with someone who’ll appreciate him next year.
Valentin pinch hit homerun. I don’t think there’s room for him next year, but I’m gonna miss all of these big pinch-hit showings…
Albert 3 for 4 against Lincoln and what does Dusty do with a tie game when Albert P. is 3 for 3? Must be a hunch I guess?
Actually why in the world didn’t he leave Bray in for the whole ninth?! He brought the guy with the 2.7 ERA in to face one batter and then put in the guy with the 4.7 ERA to face the middle of the order…

Is that not insane? Regardless this team lacks an ability to execute the fundamentals, they have pathetic plate discipline, run the bases like our kids did when they played t-ball, etc.

Most of the problem lies in lack of good coaching of young players. Get use to it, won’t be much better next year. I’m thinking 4-6 games below .500 next year. We’re stuck with Crusty and the crew until the 2010 season. I’m in hopes of Rick Sweet coming up and maybe Chris Bosio as pitching coach, not sure who for hitting coach. Barry Larkin?
