Game Thread: Five games to go

Reds are in Houston for game two of the series tonight. Only five games to go in the season. Then the long, hard, cold winter begins.

When do pitchers and catchers report, again?

Do all managers normally juggle the line ups this much? Why not Jolbert Cabrera leading off? Not to question the great one too much.

Patterson with the single. Our hopes of him finishing sub .200 are slipping away.

Don’t you love the way Berkman beats this team like a drum?

I walked away when I saw Patterson coming up…this seems to work sometimes when he’s batting so I’ll keep doing. It seems to work about 20% of the time and yes our hopes of sub .200 are slipping away. It takes a pretty bad hitter to hit below .200 when you consider a 1 for 4 night brings UP your average.

Well, stop doing that, mhopp!

From wikipedia: Patterson is on pace to complete the 2008 season with the second worst on base percentage for an outfielder in the last century.

  • I just hope Jocketty knows that.

Speaking of Wikipedia, here is something written about his management in CHC. Amazingly this is EXACTLY what we have seen here so my and others statements are not because we are __________________ (fill in the blanks). http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dusty_Baker#Criticism

and you can check out the whole thing here
    Baker on Patterson
adjusting OBP comparing it to league average over time Patterson has the worst OBP compared to league average since 1900 for players with at least 350 PA

He’s also the only player that is 100 points below league average in that same time.

OBA YEAR DIFF PLAYER LEAGUE PA
    1 Corey Patterson 2008 -.101 .238 .339 371
    2 Shano Collins 1923 -.095 .265 .360 367
    3 Marquis Grissom 2001 -.090 .250 .340 468
    4 George Wright 1985 -.086 .241 .327 393
    5 Tom Umphlett 1954 -.086 .255 .341 363
    6 Corey Patterson 2005 -.085 .254 .339 481
    7 Gil Coan 1949 -.084 .278 .363 389
    8 John Shelby 1989 -.084 .237 .321 371
    9 Buster Maynard 1943 -.081 .252 .333 424
    10 Marvell Wynne 1985 -.081 .247 .328 363

I just read an article were Baker sounded pissed because a rumor has been going around that Patterson is getting playing time despite sucking because Patterson is dating Bakers daughter.

What I find interesting in the article is that Baker doesn’t really justify why he’s playing Patterson he makes the excuse that “what other choices do I have” which is lame because Patterson got lots of playing time even before Dunn and Jr were traded.

    a quote from the article
“When you look around, how many real outfield choices do I have or have I had the last four months?” Baker said. “Freel got hurt. [Norris] Hopper got hurt. Then Jerry [Hairston Jr.] got hurt, twice. We traded [Adam] Dunn and [Ken] Griffey, and now [Chris] Dickerson is hurt. What options did I have?

Baker had plenty of options when those outfielders were healthy and here. But he played Patterson anyway.

“She hasn’t even been to Cincinnati,” Baker said. “This is so far out of line. It’s hurtful to my wife and daughter. How can people stoop that low? I don’t know who started it. But I’ve been hearing from fans, players, announcers.”

Is he saying Corey isn’t good enough for his daughter?

Dusty Baker finally had enough. When players on the Astros asked him about his daughter dating Corey Patterson, he felt the need to publicly address the issue. Baker has heard the rumor for weeks. There’s no truth to it. Natosha is not dating to Patterson.

Weeks? It has been going around for months. Hal McCoy disspelled it at least two months ago.

Votto up to .292. Could he make it to .300?

it is possible. Unlikely but possible.
Assuming 36 AB (4 per game) the rest of the season he’d have to hit about .444 or go 16 for 36. If I did the math right and he will obviously walk some of those PA

In other words, have his most torrid hitting streak of the season.

Gee, I wonder if Baker will address the other rumors regarding him dating Corey Patterson?

for 6 games in April he hit .450
he didn’t start 1 of those games

I already see one flaw in my math. I counted wrong the Reds only have 4 games left which means roughly 16 AB. In other words no chance.

I heard on my video game that Bray is a #1 draft pick. With him alone the reds got the better of the trade with Washington I’d say.

Speaking of playing CP too often, why was he in CF tonite (against a lefty no less) instead of Hairston ?
    Is Hairston hurt again ?

What is it with Baker putting the worst possible player in the leadoff spot?

Why does he ignore the only thing that matters for a leadoff hitter?

I love Bruce. He’s had a rough season but he’s super young and a top prospect. In his rookie (half) season he’s got a terrible OBP. He does not draw BB and doesn’t hit for high average. So Baker thinks he should leadoff???

The Reds on the season have a .326 OBP in the leadoff spot. .341 is league average. We have seen bad leadoff hitter (Patterson, Hopper, Bruce, Keppinger, etc) after bad leadoff hitter.

It’s the simplest thing. You don’t even have to do “complicated math” but Dusty refuses to do it.

Open comment to Dusty. Eat your stupid pride and your absolute ignorance and do what’s right. Put players in a place to do well. And kiss your lover one last time and release him.
