Good ol’ Tom Browning.

Ol’ TB. If you have read this blog for any amount of time, you might know that I’m a pretty big fan of Tom Browning. I know he isn’t the best pitcher to come through Cincinnati, but I always had a soft spot for the big guy, and the way he seemed like a bulldog on the mound.

Glad to see Browning is getting a little recognition on the 20th anniversary of his signature moment: the day he climbed onto a rooftop adjacent to Wrigley Field in full uniform. No, wait, his signature moment was the perfect game. Sorry about that.

In celebration of Browning’s GREAT game here is a little fun question (which I could post some sort of poll).
There have been 4892 games started by Reds pitchers in the last 30 years.

Which is the best start in the last 30 years?

    Soto vs Atlanta in 1982?

I was at Tom Browning’s perfect game…well, for most of it!

I was 13 and went with my parents. We waited through the rain delay and stayed for the game…but right around the 7th inning my parents wanted to leave b/c my mom had to be up early the next day for work (my dad likes sports but by no means is he a huge fan). I pleaded to stay but off we went. As we approached the exit, the usher said in slight bewilderment, “you know, it’s a no-hitter” – but the decision had been made. As we walked across the deserted bridge from Riverfront and we did not see another soul all the way back to our car – literally no one. By the time we got in the car and had the radio on, the ninth inning had begun and we heard the final outs – I was so devastated that we had left! My dad said somewhat facetiously, “well the usher didn’t say “perfect game”, he said no-hitter. Lol, whatever.

On the plus side, I got Chris Sabo’s autograph during the rain delay, which was pretty exciting at the time! (that was during the whole spud mackenzie craze)
