2009 Schedule Released

Well, it appears the Reds are actually going to play in 2009, though the chances of a winning season are pretty much nil, I would think. Here’s the tentative schedule for next year.

Opening Day will be on April 6, vs. the Mets. It will probably be the first Opening Day game I will have skipped in six years. I just don’t think I will be able to bear to watch that mess.

You’ll feel differently after the long, cold winter. I know I always do.

  • You are probably right, DA. That always happens to me too.

Then again, I’ve never been this down on the Reds before. Most other years, I’ve had hope, at least. Now, without something major happening, I can’t see the Reds being able to score enough runs to be a serious team next year. And I don’t have much faith in Jocketty, either.

I hope the whole organization proves me wrong.

I’ve been to 1 opening day…vs. The Mets in 2005.

That year was lousy. The pitching rotation was setup to fail from the start. Paul Wilson was the team’s “ace”. Eric Milton was the #2. Ramon Ortiz and a not yet proven Harang were in the #3/4 spots.

Yet, the Opening Day game was awesome. We got lucky with perfect April weather. The Reds got to Pedro Martinez for 3 runs in the 1st inning on a 3-R Dunn HR. Paul Wilson had not yet imploded, also giving up just 3 runs in 6 innings to match Pedro.

Down by 2 runs in the 9th inning, Adam Dunn and Joe Randa hit back-to-back HR’s to put three runs on the board and win in walk-off fashion in front of a sold out crowd.

At the very least, next year you would get to see Johan Santana pitch.

It looks like MLB has been more generous with the Reds off days in 2009.

The 1st half of their schedule was brutal this year.

April – 2 days off (1 the day after opening day)
May – 3 days off, but a gap of 18 days between off days
June – just 2 days off with a May – June gap of 21 days
July – 3 days in addition to the all-star break

In 2009, their longest gap between off days is 2 weeks.
    April – 3 days off
    May – 3 days off
June – 4 days off (each Monday is an off-day)
July – made up for here with 1 day in addition to the all-star break

I love how we get to go to Toronto again, and don’t get to play the Twins.

What’s the deal with the Toronto series? Talk about stupid. At the least if you are going to make the Reds play an AL East team it should be Baltimore or Tampa considering they never played last year.

This spring will be my last semester in college in Chicago, which is just a 4 hour drive from Cincinnati. I don’t know where in the world I’ll be in 2010, and I can afford to skip classes in my last semester…so I’d like to go to opening day this year. I usually make it to about 7-8 Reds games a year (the Wrigley games and a few in Cincinnati when I’m home visiting my family), but I’ve never been to opening day before. How hard is it to get your hands on opening day tickets? Do you have to wait in line or something?

Also, who do you guys think will start opening day next year? Harang or Volquez?

I’m hoping for one big move for an outfielder (FA signing like Burrell, for example), and a serious trade for a good catcher or CF, hopefully including a serious pitching prospect like Bailey. If we fill 2 out of 3 of those positions with actual good players, then I can deal with a platoon of Dickerson/Freel or something or Hanigan/somebody at the third position. If those moves get made, the rotation pitches like it can and the bullpen pitches like it can, I don’t think we’ll be as bad as we were this year (I’m not ready to claim that we can contend next year, but maybe put together a respectable record).

Whoa whoa whoa, posted that (#9) in the wrong thread somehow. I’m going to move it to the thread where it’s on topic, feel free to delete it if you care, moderators.

I figure it will be Volquez although I believe if Harang starts opening day it will be the most consecutive opening day starts by a Reds pitcher. I’m not positive about that though.

Opening day tickets, the sure way to get them is to purchase one of the many packages they’ll have for people to buy. There are places that will have them and give them away but that’s a huge crapshoot. You could also probably get them from a third party type site that sells tickets(I believe it’s tickethub or something like that) but they’ll be way too high priced for whatever you get.

I am really shocked at some who believe Jockerty is clueless. I’m sorry how did the Cards do under his direction? Also, is there no chance that Bruce, Votto, Edwin and Phillips won’t improve and thus be keys in this team scoring runs? The pitching starters are the best 5 we have had in decades and the bullpen is pretty set. Sorry but I don’t see the Cubs repeating, getting older and more injuries will hurt their pitching. Sorry, but next year looks bright as long as Corey is gone.

Also would someone, anyone please tell me whom these “good” catchers are in the ML right now that would be available?
