Time for a fearless prediction:
The Cincinnati Reds will win every remaining game, thus avoiding another losing season. Bold statement, huh? Well, bet the ranch on it. Beginning with Johnny Cueto today, the Reds are on the verge of ripping off a two-week winning streak to finish with an 81-81 record.
Discuss game one of the streak here.
Surely you must be betting your ranch assuming that Crappy Outterson and Paula Blah Blah are in the starting line up?
C. Dickerson LF
J. Keppinger SS
J. Votto 1B
E. Encarnacion 3B
J. Bruce RF
D. Richar 2B
C. Patterson CF
R. Hanigan C
J. Cueto P
Do you think Dusty would have batted Piazza 8th behind Patterson?
Do you think Dusty would have batted Piazza 8th behind Patterson?
yes
he’d do the same for Bench
You know what confuses me the most about Dusty’s absolute LUST for Patterson? .204!!!! .2#$%#$#@%04
Even old stupid baseball-guys know that a .204 batting average sucks.
I hate to say this but the other day while watching the game I wondered if it was a racial thing. If Patterson were Hispanic or white would he get so much playing time? There is NO EXCUSE WHAT SO EVER for Patterson still being on this team.
mike, is this the first you have considered the racial issue? I thought of that for quite a while just never said anything. I agree it may be at least in part due to a racial issue yes but it doesn’t give answers to the other stupid decisions made by Dusty Baker. I can’t wait until he’s gone. Speed, defense does not mean anything if you can not produce offense as an outfielder!!. Dusty Baker just doesn’t know or doesn’t care how to manage!
Non-Reds related. It is weird watching the remnants of Ike pass through Ohio. You can actually see the clouds moving counter-clockwise overhead.
It is the first time I considered it.
Not sure why I hadn’t before last week some time.
Part of it is that Patterson has not been as bad in the past as he has been this year. I just couldn’t fathom that he would continue to suck on the level that he has. I figured he’d at least get lucky and some of those pop-outs might turn into bloops that fell in. But nope, he’s been AWFUL and Baker continues to start him.
I’d love to know how many wins Patterson has cost the Reds.
I want to know how the Reds do with him in the line up vs. out of the line up?
If this were a real hitting team, Cueto would be destroyed…same for Volquez last night…their control is really off. Probably tired
Reds are 28-42 in games Corey Patterson has started for a .400 winning percentage.
They’re 39-39 (.500) in games Corey Patterson doesn’t start.
I want to know how the Reds do with him in the line up vs. out of the line up?
not that this is the most accurate way to look at it since other players in the lineup change.
But the difference was HUGE so I figured I’d post the numbers.
How much more offense have the Reds had when Patterson is NOT in the lineup?
7.6% MORE OFFENSE!!!!!
4.2 R/G when Patterson starts
4.5 R/G when Patterson doesn’t start
that’s HUGE.
Guess Bruce figured he better hit it out since Patter$hit was coming up
Mike and Tom…can we send that to Bob Castaloony and Walt Jerketty? Dusty too by the way.
Reds are 28-42 in games Corey Patterson has started for a .400 winning percentage.
They’re 39-39 (.500) in games Corey Patterson doesn’t start.
So he has cost them at least 14 wins using those figures.
It wouldn’t matter to Baker. Remember, he manages by instinct.
Mike and Tom…can we send that to Bob Castaloony and Walt Jerketty? Dusty too by the way.
now add to the fact that
a. We have one of the worst hitting catchers starting most games in Bako
b. That a so-so hitter (good for a 2B) batted 4th most of the season
c. An old declining Hall of Famer was batting 3rd a good chunk of the season.
d. Votto wasn’t given the starting job out of spring instead we had a platoon for a handful of week while Hatteberg stunk it up.
e. we trade away our biggest run producer
and it’s clear this offense could have been a LOT!! better.
I find it surprising that Hatteberg didn’t get signed after his release. Could it have been his choice not to sign with someone?
I guess after working under Dusty Baker he probably decided baseball has turned for the worse and to just hang it up. Plus he had his best year in 2007
Gee I wonder if Cueto is tired at 106 pitches like Volquez last night…wonder if Dusty considered that?
Can Dusty count that high?
D-backs can not hit…59 strikes 56 balls by Cueto and they have 1 run? That is terrible!
Is is windy where everyone else is at? In the Y-City, there has to be gusts in excess to 30 mph. Imagine how strong this system was yesterday when it was coming off the Gulf.
A rookie getting some time in…imagine that…good team to practice with as they can’t hit any better than today’s Reds line up.
mlb.com said “Baker likes what he sees in Richar” I knew then he probably was not very good.
7 pitches for that inning for Dbacks pitching, the reds are officially worse than the dbacks for batting
Wow, the D-backs must have the same hitting strategy as the Reds…”Instinct, Dusty Logic”
Winds in excess of 45 mph now. I’m amazed we still have power.
Evidence of what a horrible hitter Castillo can be.
Where is Y-City?
Bob Melvin must know that in order for Dusty to take Crappy P out of the line up you must put a LHP in…so he opts for the RHP knowing how bad he is at hitting!
Corey Patterson is a hero.
and it blew up in his face…I really want the Reds to win but good grief I can not take another season with Corey Patterson…I really can’t!
Bob Uecker said that he saw a game where Corey Patterson batted in the bottom of the ninth with the bases loaded and two out, and he looked over at the Reds dugnout and everyone was wearing street cloths. Except Dusty.
Wind blew out cable and Internet for a three hours plus.
Isn’t ironic that the race card was raised, albeit not the one you’d expect because, well, some of you just don’t know any better. But the angle you CAN expect is what is going to be said nationally about Cincinnati–again–and very soon is what a backwoods, polarized, racist hick town Cincinnati is and all you need for evidence is look at the beating that Marvin Lewis and Dusty Baker receive.
Will it be accurate? I don’t know. Personally, my dealings with Marvin in Baltimore and Washington were he’s a smug, condescending ass who’s not nearly as smart as he believes. But when Lewis (rightly) gets fired, the Wilbons, Whitlocks and Terry Moores (who, btw, worked at the Enquirer in the 1970s) are going to be all over the fan base, and all they need for fuel are some of the above comments about a proven manager with more than 1,200 career wins.
When Baker was hired and the fan base screamed, I was asked by a white national writer if I thought the vitriol was racist. Good question. History says yes, but I responded the fan base would have complained any hire. They complained about the cheap Knights, Boones, Mileys and Narrons, but when they hired a proven winner they complained that Mackanin, who couldn’t even get a coaching staff job this past offseason, was robbed. Go figure.
Will the national media be right in their assessment of Cincinnati’s treatment of Lewis and Baker? Doesn’t really matter because Cincinnati already has that national reputation, and on the surface that reputation and some of the fan base’s narrow mindset will be all the verification they need.
Just sayin’, folks . . . . the day is forthcoming.
Zambrano threw a no-hitter for the Cubs. Too bad Dusty didn’t bring Zambrano over to the Reds instead of his “boy” Patterson. …in fact, I’d take Zambrano’s hitting over Patterson’s…even if Carlos didn’t ever pitch.
And comment 34 advances the reputation. Unreal.
I agree with Mr. Redlegs, guys. I’m going to have to start deleting comments. The race stuff is way out of bounds.
Yep.
Mr. Redlegs, if you think I was referring in any way to race you are incorrect (comment 34 and 35). I’m referring to stupidity or bull-headedness (take your pick) of Dusty Baker. Both of those attributes are independent of race (and I don’t even see how you thought otherwise from my comment)?
However, as you mentioned, the fact is that Reds fans (and Cincinnati media) DO complain about their manager a lot. Of course, that is probably directly related to the Reds’ play the last decade or so. Is it the manager’s fault the Reds have been so bad? Not entirely, no. Of course, when Dusty plays Corey Patterson (who is too old to be part of the future and thus has no reason to be starting at this point in the year), fans have the right to question/complain. Again, at least from my perspective, I’m complaining about stupidity.
Y-City Jim, 28-42 vs. 39-39, going with the “we’re a .500 team when he doesn’t start” logic, means he’s cost us 7 games, not 14.
I’m going to stick my neck out and say that CP has played well in September, been in the middle of a lot of 9th and extra inning rallies, whether with an infield hit (twice), a flyball that leads to an error by the catcher, or whatever. And I appreaciate his winning today’s game.
No, I don’t want him here next year, and don’t believe he will be. I’ve lost patience with Bako, don’t want to see him on the field in a Reds uniform again.
PS Another fine running catch in deep CF by CP tonite. He gets an excellent jump and makes those catches on a regular basis. But I agree, your CFer has to hit better than .204.
pinson, thanks for poinying out the ath error. Brain fart on my part.
You often hear the argument that Baker communicates well with his players and that they genuinely like him. After thinking about that I wonder if Baker is like one of those guys who just has this wonderful, magnetic personality but that, at the same time, everyone knows is a major league bull shitter?
Race does not explain Paul Bako. Dusty is not a racist. He’s just a stubborn man who acts on gut instincts and refuses to acknowledge evidence that he is wrong.
The chances of the reds pulling this off is about the same chance that the bengals win 1 game this year. So lets root on those Bearcats with Brian Kelly.
Sorry for any role I played in the “race” comments. I do not believe Dusty Baker to be a racist but I do believe that he is a man of his word when it comes to making promises to individuals (this has been written in a positive light in the past). He went over his managers head to get Patterson and is still playing him despite many objections (and at lead off).
Lets face it, this man came up in an era when he may have had to sit at the back of the bus because of his color. I believe that he may feel a kinship to Corey and that being at least part of the reason why he gives him some breaks as if a father to a son…I have no problem with that but when it clearly has cost the entire team a number of games. I think I was probably a little harsh and it angers me to see this continue but I can tell you Mr. Redlegs I am NO backwoods, polarized, racist racist as my girlfriend is from the Dominican Republic and would be considered by many as being “black”
