Confession time: I haven’t watched or listened to a single pitch of Cincinnati Reds baseball since August 10. Wow, as I look at the calendar, that’s more than a month. No question that’s the longest stretch without the Reds that I have ever endured, in-season. (I have watched other teams, however, primarily the Diamondbacks and White Sox.)
I may watch tonight.
I haven’t decided yet. I am still more depressed about the Reds than I can ever remember. In fact, Cincinnati sports in general are in such shambles, it is a disgrace.
On the other hand, I’m interested to see Adam Dunn against his former mates. Yeah, I’ll probably watch tonight. If so, I’ll be here discussing the game with you guys and gals.

Lineup isn’t too bad…getting some of the younger guys out there.

if you say so kurt
Go dunn!
hit nine of them!
i need the fantasy points!
Kurt…do you need your eyes checked? Please tell me you are being sarcastic? I
I have the same confession… since Griffey was traded I haven’t paid attention on tv or radio. Dunn’s trade certainly solidified those feelings. Not only do I not want to watch a team in such disrepair, with Corey Patterson manning CF, but I also don’t want to listen to Marty complain about it on the radio.
two bad hitting teams are getting mowed down by two good pitchers so far.
Not even an hour into the game and it’s half over or close to it.
FSOH text poll says Weathers should not return next year – 39% Yes, 61% No
I just tuned in in time to see the dynamic dip-sticks eat up 2 outs on 3 pitches! Wow, what a combo! I read the quote Dusty made “That’s a monster” about the Hurricane so I guess I better go ahead and fill up since Dusty knows all!
Patterson misplays a single into a double.
Welch is ripping Patterson.

and those of us who are posting on a blog during the game are the BIG fans. The ones who USE TO watch a LOT of games and often GO to a lot of games.
that’s what that lame letter from ownership was trying to do, get us to continue to pay attention. Bleck. I watching because of Dunn and the Harang/Webb matchup.
someone mentioned this lineup as “getting the younger guys out there”. I don’t see that. I see Patterson (who’s not old really) and Bako and a 25 year old non-prospect SS and a nobody 2B that Dusty HAD to play because Phillips is out.
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, the young guys are ALREADY being played. Those guys are EE, Votto, Bruce, Volquez and Cueto. Those other guys aren’t starters.
Harang keeps Patterson’s miscue from costing the Reds a run. Good job of pitching. Nice to see it again.
Mike,
I couldn’t agree with you more… read my blog post on the letter from Walt and Bob.

Why did Harang throw that ball?
Why did Harang throw that ball?
and how in hell was the dropped ball by Upton NOT ruled an error and ruled a double??
even if Harang makes a perfect throw he was safe.
OK, so maybe I was trying to be positive.
How will the Columbus Blue Jackets do this year?
I think Welch ought to be moved into the radio booth with Marty next season.
That is why maybe Dickerson could be more than a 4th outfielder, the dude has a good eye at the plate.
Well Kurt you know we don’t like to be positive around here…just try not to let it happen again. After all the team really is good but we just wanted to hear ourselves complain
a little bit more on youth
It’s clear that Bruce, Votto, EE, Cueto, and Volquez are the current future of the Reds. But what about the other youth, if there even is any?
Castillo (24) – non-prospect
Bray (25) – already pitched most of the season
Janish (25) – non-prospect
Ramon Ramirez (25) – non-prospect and appears to be in the rotation. Hopefully they replace him with Owings
Danny Richar (25) – non-prospect
Rosales (25) – non-prospect but could be useful as a utility guy
Dickerson (26) – non-prospect but could be a 4th/5th OF
Nick Masset (26) – non-prospect but handy in long relief which really is a so-what
Josh Roenicke (26) – is there any such thing as a reliever prospect? I didn’t think so. Not closer material, probably 7th inning guy. Another so-what
That leaves ONE player we should see more of. Herrera
there is no youth to play that isn’t playing, cept maybe Bailey, Frazier, Maloney or Stubbs
Dickerson’s OBP makes him interesting especially on a team that is so poor in OBP.
Good job of pitching by Webb…knowing Mr. Richar is pretty much a career minor league player and Dickerson is just above that at the moment after going 2 for 3.
I he pitching around the 5′7″ David “The Hammer” Eckstein to get to Adam Dunn? Dusty Logic maybe?
That’s the spirit mike!
someone should tell Burton that Eckstein is slow and runs funny because he’s throwing over way too much. I can’t stand Eckstein, he throws and runs like my sister use to when she was 11
That’s the spirit mike!
hey, I’ve had a half a bottle of Shiraz waddya want?
Well Dusty, he’s loaded the bases…do you think it’s time to take him out…oh and it’s 1-0 right now
Well Dusty, he’s loaded the bases…do you think it’s time to take him out…oh and it’s 1-0 right now
hey Dusty only has 12 relievers to work with, give him a break, he fell asleep during that inning
AZ TV announcers after Dunn drew a walk with the bases loaded.
“He does what he does”
too bad the Reds never understood that.
That a boy Bray…walk the runner in, at least it wasn’t a grand slam and they’re still clogging the bases! Besides we all know how to get more playing time under Dusty Baker…you pitch and bat poorly like Bako, Patterson, and Majewski
I’ve been saying it all year…Bill Bray always lets his first runner on base when he pitches! Wonder if Dusty is aware…ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZz…nahhh.
Can anyone pull that statistic up?? Would love to know!
I can’t take it anymore…this team is the laughing stock…if Walt Jocketty doesn’t do something major…starting with management/coaching this offseason we’ve got another 1 and a half seasons of this crap
Maybe Jocketty could start by telling Baker to stop talking to the media because he sounds like a moron every time he does.
How we lookin?
Dusty leaves .202 hitting Patterson in as the tying run at the plate with 2 outs in the top of the 9th inning. LOL. Wow. Really? I’m pretty sure my left sock could do a better job at managing this team than Dusty. No, don’t PH for the .203 hitting OF. PH for the kid hitting .471 since he got called up.
Got to thinking tonight about why I bother with this team any more. I have no idea. Force of habit? Consider:
1. I’m not from Cincinnati. I’m not even from Ohio.
2. The Reds won a World Series three times in my lifetime.
3. They’ve had three Rookies of the Year.
4. At least one MVP (Larkin) — can’t think of any more.
5. One perfect game.
So I’ve seen quite a bit of excellence over the years, and I’m pretty satisfied. If I never saw another Reds game, I could tell my kids, yeah, I laid awake that night in 1988 and listened to the callers and the talk radio while they waited out the Reds-Dodgers rain delay, and then Tom Browning threw a perfect game. And yeah, I was 15 when they won the World Series in 1990, and I heard Marty say, “Benzinger backing and calling…and the 1990 World Championship belongs to the Cincinnati Reds.”
I’ve been to the mountaintop as a Reds fan.
Which makes me wonder, really, why I keep watching. This isn’t the Reds team I grew up on. This is some horrible bastardization of that team, that organization. With Dunn and Griffey gone, I have no real sentimental attachment to these guys. I like Votto and Bruce, but I don’t really care.
There’s just no incentive for me to watch any more.
Of course, Marty is so objective when talking about Dunn.
Re: Bray allowing his first batter on
this season
.291 OBP allowed to the 1st batter (very good)
.358 OBP allowed overall (not so good)
oddly 1.125 OPS allowed on his 1st pitch
I think today we’ve learned Mike is a glass half enpty kind of guy.
It is interesting how so many here and another place I use to partake think they know what is best. The Reds are playing the young guys, something many said they wouldn’t and now they are getting ripped. Many want the Reds to upgrade the catcher position, well DUH, but with whom? How many “good” catchers are in the game today and of those how many are available?
Outside of playing Patterson, Dusty has done a very good job this season, and like it or not Junior is better off in Chicago and Dunn wasn’t worth what he is going to get paid on the Free Agent market. I mean last time I checked neither the Twins nor the Rays have a
“Dunn” type hitter in their lineup and are doing well. And how well have the D-backs done since Dunn arrived?
Hey Kurt, more like a bottle half empty kinda guy. LOL
