Game Thread: Laverne & Shirley Edition

“One, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight! Schlemiel! Schlimazel! Hasenpfeffer Incorporated!”

After you get off work at Shotz Brewery, head on down to the old ballyard in Milwaukee to enjoy tonight’s titanic struggle between the Brewers and the Reds. Edinson Volquez is back on the mound, again seeking that elusive 17th victory. Discuss it here….

I’ll be tuning out at 10:10 regardless to see my Raiders wreck the Broncos.

Great to see Patterson leading off….UGH. I’m not suggesting we have a good leadoff replacement but hell we know what Patterson can do…well really what he can’t do.

But we can still count ‘em, let’s see:
Patterson can’t hit, field, run the bases, carry Dunn’s jock strap (mostly because Dunn is gone), or really do anything at all right…

Patterson leading off is simply another reason why that letter the Reds ownership sent out was such a sham. You want fans to go to the ballpark, at least play players that have a potential to help the Reds in 2009…and if they think that Patterson is going to help next year then there’s no hope for ‘09.

Yep I tuned in to find out that Patterson is leading off…why not Cabrera or Dickerson…there is no real excuse. I refuse to watch this bull $kdt and suggest to all fans to do likewise in protest! Not that you won’t want to do it because you know they’ll lose and can’t score runs. Plus there’s no reason to grind Volquez’s arm to a stump with nothing to gain! Dusty Baker is quite possibly the worst manager in Reds history…at least in the last 25 years

Speaking of the letter being a sham, here’s a quote I wanted to run by you guys from Mark Sheldon’s prevew article about tonight’s game:

“But for most teams out of contention, September can serve as a time to evaluate the future by calling up a slew of Minor League prospects and throwing them to the fire when wins and losses seemingly don’t matter anymore.

Not for the Reds and especially not for Baker.

Baker said he does not plan to alter his lineup in the near future when the Reds call up the bulk of their prospects.”

I’ve mentioned this glaring inconsistensy a few times, and to me it’s maybe the most infuriating thing of the season. Compare this talk from Baker with the letter sent by our owner and GM:

“As we near September, we will continue to provide valuable playing time to our young players and new acquisitions who we feel can become significant contributors at the Major League level.”

The actions of Baker after the sending of this letter, and his choice of lineups day in and day out were an obvious contradiction of this, and hinted at insincerity on behalf of management. Now he has flat out said that he is not going to provide “valuable playing time” to our prospects. At the bottom of the article he mentions that getting as many wins as possible is important to him because of his pride. To me, this is outrageous. I’d like to use obscenities right now, but I’d hate to get another post deleted!

mmhopp, Dickerson is having some naggin ankle issues. I can understand him not playing right now if it’s bad for him. Cabrera meanwhile has what, 5 rbi’s in the last two games and he still won’t be given a start.

I’ve been saying all year that Baker is is as arrogant as it gets…a know it all. I am so sick and tire of his crap. I hope this is the last management job he ever gets…he IS the worst manager in my 25 year memory of the Reds. PLEASE WALT AND BOB, fire him now!! Before he ruins the young talent they have!!

If any one of us got to be GN for a day and fired Baker, we would be heroes in the city of Cincinnati for our entire lifetimes and beyond. They would probably build a statue of us.

This, to me, is more of a problem then Dusty Baker alone. The fact that the organization is letting him do and say things like this in the wake of the b.s. letter they sent us so we’d keep revenue at a sustainable letter to me is an ever bigger problem. Where is the accountability? It makes me wonder how actually serious they are about their “commitment” to building a championship machine, or if their just committed to keeping ratings and attendance at a high enough level to maintain their salaries.

I agree, Kevin. Either it was total bs or Walter and Bobby are completely under the force of the Baker reality distortion field.

It is a joke. No doubt.

Welsh and Thom are doing some low-key coveting of free-agent-to-be Mike Cameron. Cameron’s certainly having a great year in his contract year. I am, however, suspicious of whether he’s reached a new level at age 35. (In other words, I suspect a fluke).

Oh, come on. A HR to Jason Kendall? He hits one a year.

Cameron is a hole-plugger, not an acquisition for a club full of holes.

The amazing lead-off hitter is 0-2, inching his way back down to sub .200.

For sure, Jim. It seems like we have enough guys with lines like his, although his OPS is higher than most of our lineup (Bruce, Phillips, EdE, Keppinger). It’s not a problem to have guys like that in the lineup, but an entire lineup of them is not a playoff team. The holes we have need to be filled in the offseason by something more than hole-pluggers if we’re actually going to contend in ‘09 (we’re not going to contend in ‘09)…

Did anyone take a look at the bench? Every single player has a BA above our lead off batter!!!! Does anyone doubt that Dusty Baker has a distorted sense of reality? I think Boob Castaloony and Walt Jerketty are just going with it for now as I read somewhere in the past that Dusty wants a lot of control in his position. I’d say at mid-season next year when they’re at the same level they were in 2008, we’ll see changes. I’ve seen some bad managers in Reds history but Baker just flat out defies reality…I like most people but I really hate Dusty Baker, I really hate him…I know it’s not right but I really do!!!

I was annoyed about tonite’s starting lineup, like everyone else, and felt the only way we could win is with another miraculous 9th inning rally.
Not that I thought it would happen.
The Brew Crew might be getting tight again.

I must say, I’m sort of disappointed that there hasn’t been any recent posts from Maryland that unreasonably slam posters for reasonable comments. But I guess me posting this comment sort of makes me the cauldren ripping on the pot for calling the kettle black. Or possibly I’m throwing stones from a glass house into a crystal one. Either way…..
