Uh-oh. With the win last night, Pittsburgh is catching up. The Battle For Fifth Place ™ is heating up. Can Edinson Volquez get his 17th win tonight and help the Reds fend off the spunky Pirates? Stay tuned!!!
it was in his upper arm, between the shoulder and elbow. It did not look fun. Bases loaded right now for Richar, lets have him run Price from this game.
Thats what Maloney has done all year…. he has walked a fine line with the long ball all year. In a slightly smaller park tonight, he would have already given up 3 HR.
Dayton broke open in the 6th inning with a Neftali Soto double that plated 2 and a Waring single that scored Soto. They are up 3-0 in game 1 of the playoffs.
So logically I agree that Dickerson can’t possibly keep performing at this level… That being said, are the GMs of other teams smart enough to know that? Maybe this is an opportunity to sell high?
I wouldn’t look to move Dickerson unless someone were willing to part with something a bit more valuable than I think they would. Dickerson has a good ability to hit right handers, which make up a majority of the league. He plays great defense in CF as well, which is a big need for the Reds next year. I would have him penciled in as the starter against RHP next year in the leadoff spot and in CF. Thats just me though.
This milb.com broadcast is so dinky. It looks like someone just propped a camcorder up on top of a trash can for the pitcher-camera; totally lopsided. (Not complaining, obviously since it’s free, but it’s pretty funny).
Kevin, the picture looks a little more grainy than usual tonight, but this is what its like all year. Still, well worth the 29.95 for the entire season.
Gave up the 2 runs then struck out the side…reminds me of this game that I went to at Wrigley last season when we batted through the order in the 5th against Zambrano, then Wuertz came in and struck out the side. Thought that was pretty uniqe for a team to bat through the order and then go down on 3 consecutive K’s in the same inning.
The dynamic duo of Patterson and Bako are hitless. Big shocker but at least Bako is a great handler of pitchers and Crappy is a great defender and is fast.
If I were the Reds I would shut Maloney down as well. Maybe I’d let Thompson and Bailey come up and work out of the bullpen. Let Fogg go out and get his brains beat in.
I was skeptical of Votto last summer, but I am absolutely a believer. He may not be a perennial all-star, but he’s going to be Adrian Gonzalez Lite (w/o the glove).
I don’t know what I think would be better for Bailey. At the beginning of the season I remember advocating that he spend some time in big-league long relief, to figure out how to pitch major leaguers without the pressure of starting. I also think it could be useful to send him back down to single A with the statement that he needs to work his way back up through the system.
I think that Bailey needs something drastic, and the getting-sent-down-to-A-ball thing seemed to work for Volquez (and also Roy Halladay, as it happens, in 2000)
“The Mendoza Line is an informal term used in baseball for when a position player’s batting average falls below the boundary between extremely poor and merely below-average offensive production, or the offensive threshold below which players’ presence in the Major Leagues cannot be justified despite their defensive abilities”
“Have the Reds even had that many base runners since Dunn left?”
I checked on baseball-reference to count our baserunners because it would have been funny if we hadn’t, but unfortunately, the answer is yet, we’ve had that many baserunners.
I checked on baseball-reference to count our baserunners because it would have been funny if we hadn’t, but unfortunately, the answer is yet, we’ve had that many baserunners.
From top to bottom…management, coaching, offense (clogging or unclogging the bases), defense, starting pitching, relief pitching…I see no part of this team that does not need substantial improvement for next year. Might as well Keep Votto, Bruce, Volquez, Cueto, Harang and the rest can go starting with Dusty Baker and his foolish decisions on players.
Does it seem odd that the Reds have brought up the Louisville announcer again, while the Bats are playing in their playoffs? Is Brantley getting an early start on looking for another job?
I really like the patience of these young players…seems someone has been coaching them well??? Too bad the Reds manager likes his “proven veterans” which are actually just “proven losers”
Kudos for Dusty coming to terms with having to bat for two of his favorites and it scored a run.
What’s with all these Pirates running wild on the Reds? They had something like 35 SB on the season coming into this series, and two games in they’ve added 5 more.
Marty did just report the result of the AZ game and how it came about on the Adam Dunn double…but only in the context of what its effect was on the NL West race. Just the facts, submitted without comment.
Is Brantley getting an early start on looking for another job?
One can only hope as long as they don’t replace him some other bozo.
interesting question.
Which is a rarer mineral. A manager with a brain or a sport broadcaster with a brain?
I’ve finally heard a broadcaster I dislike more than the Reds broadcasters. Mark Grace, since I watch AZ games now that Dunn was traded. Grace is an idiot. The best part is that he’s so stupid he’s not as mean spirited as Reds announcers. The Reds announcers are just hateful old men. Grace just says fluff comment after fluff comment.
yeah and actually he’s not bad (compared to the rest, I know many better among the amateur ranks).
I DO ENJOY the Reds TV broadcasters MUCH, MUCH, MUCH more than radio. I stopped listening to the radio broadcasts sometime middle of last season. I tried this season and lasted 2 innings.
I’d take Grande over Grace.
ugh, this reminds me. I watched a couple innings of the LA/SD game today and was reminded for the millionth time how great of a broadcaster he is. I don’t even need to mention his name for you to know who I’m talking about.

So logically I agree that Dickerson can’t possibly keep performing at this level… That being said, are the GMs of other teams smart enough to know that? Maybe this is an opportunity to sell high?
yeah they are smart enough to know this. Not much more but even they know this. Even if Reds media doesn’t know it.
But before we write off Dickerson I do want to mention that he has one trait that the Reds need DESPERATELY.
He might not be much more than a 4th (or even 5th) OF but…
He does know how to get on base.
Even though he was old in the minors and enter peak years as a rookie in the bigs. It’s hard to ignore this.
Even his lowest result in the last couple years, .355 is not bad. How many Reds this season have above a .355 OBP?
Votto, Dunn (gone), Ross (gone), Jr (gone), Hairston JR (over his head), and Hanigan (over his head).
Seems like Reds management, by getting rid of 3 of the top 5 OBP clearly have a vision.
I’d rather have Dickerson over Patterson, Sanders, Vanderwall, Bragg, McCracken, Ellison, Taylor, Romano, Mateo, Cruz, Rivera, Hollandworth, Clark, Jennings, Bichette, and Tucker

I’m at the Bats playoff game. There are seriously 1,500 people here.
Am I going to have to talk to myself again tonight?
Maloney has a no-hitter through 3 innings.
Kurt,
I am watching online. That called 3rd strike to Stubbs looked pretty outside, was it the camera angle or was that a bad call?
It was a terrible call. It was outside and low.
But he’s been consistently bad on both sides. No hitter through 4 for Maloney.
in other news, Dayton is tied at 0-0 in the 6th inning.
Wherever that ball hit him it popped really loud.
it was in his upper arm, between the shoulder and elbow. It did not look fun. Bases loaded right now for Richar, lets have him run Price from this game.
I think the Bats have left 25 on base so far.
He clubbed that one.
Thats what Maloney has done all year…. he has walked a fine line with the long ball all year. In a slightly smaller park tonight, he would have already given up 3 HR.
Rosales is playing short. I guess Sweet doesn’t know that Rosales doesn’t play shortstop.
Nevermind, he’s playing third.
Rosales plays short, he just doesn’t do it well lol. But yeah, Janish is at SS.
BTW, Reds are tied at 2-2 in the 5th for anyone that cares.
Dickerson can not be stopped!!
Chris Dickerson…. seriously, what the heck has gotten into this kid…. 400+ foot HR into the visitors bullpen. 3-2 Reds.
Hey, what’s up RedlegNation?
Looks like Volquez has his K-pitch working tonight. And Chris Dickerson gives him a lead!
He tried to kill some kids on the merry-go-round with that one.
Too bad Dickerson sucks and will never be more than a 4th outfielder.
Jorgenson actually was juiced. Dickerson is just a big kid.
Dayton broke open in the 6th inning with a Neftali Soto double that plated 2 and a Waring single that scored Soto. They are up 3-0 in game 1 of the playoffs.
Why didn’t anyone say anything about Adam Dunn hitting a walk off double today for the dbacks?
So logically I agree that Dickerson can’t possibly keep performing at this level… That being said, are the GMs of other teams smart enough to know that? Maybe this is an opportunity to sell high?
Say – I saw that Adam Dunn hit a walkoff double for AZ today…
General reminder, b/c this is the second time it’s come up in the past couple days.
We don’t have many rules around here, but here’s one:
Possible reasons for deletion or banning
Speculation on any player’s use of steroids, that’s going to be gone as soon as we come across it in almost every case.
Chris Dickerson…. seriously, what the heck has gotten into this kid…. 400+ foot HR into the visitors bullpen. 3-2 Reds.
What an anomaly. Check for cork.
Sorry about that, Chris, wasn’t aware of the rule.
Why didn’t anyone say anything about Adam Dunn hitting a walk off double today for the dbacks?
Dunner!!!
nice pitch to the helmet
Chris,
Jorgensen was suspended for 50 games prior to this season for failing a test. I didn’t really think that was speculation given the evidence.
I’m leaving Doug’s comment, since it’s factually accurate, but let’s please avoid all PED speculation. House Rules.
No worries, Kevin.
And I was getting to you, Doug.
Dickerson is huge.
This milb.com broadcast is so dinky. It looks like someone just propped a camcorder up on top of a trash can for the pitcher-camera; totally lopsided. (Not complaining, obviously since it’s free, but it’s pretty funny).
Its getting surly on the field.
Dickerson is huge.
hahahahahahaha
Kevin, the picture looks a little more grainy than usual tonight, but this is what its like all year. Still, well worth the 29.95 for the entire season.
Way to ram the catcher at the plate and bloody his nose when it was a force out and couldn’t have mattered anyway.
That poor catcher has no one to be mad at except his pitcher.
Volquez looks about as much like Cy Young material tonight as Frank Pastore.
Back in the major leagues, Volquez has lost his lead, now having given up 4 runs…what a bummer to see the guy’s ERA above 3.00, huh?
Is there something wrong with Ted Power? He walks like he has a baseball in his hiny.
I don’t think that is what Power wanted him to do.
Why does Thom refer to Freddy “Sahn-chez”?
Funny, nobody believes that Nady’s first name is actually pronounced “Eggs-zavier,” but they’ll butcher Pull-Holes and Jock-er-tee all day.
Looks like we’ll be getting help from AAA sooner than later…3-0 Durham in the sixth. Who still thinks Matt Maloney should come up?
Gave up the 2 runs then struck out the side…reminds me of this game that I went to at Wrigley last season when we batted through the order in the 5th against Zambrano, then Wuertz came in and struck out the side. Thought that was pretty uniqe for a team to bat through the order and then go down on 3 consecutive K’s in the same inning.
The dynamic duo of Patterson and Bako are hitless. Big shocker but at least Bako is a great handler of pitchers and Crappy is a great defender and is fast.
Votto is Mr. September
Maloney only allowed 4 hits, it just so happened 3 of them were home runs.
Kurt,
What speed is Fisher throwing at down there?
hahahaha
If I were the Reds I would shut Maloney down as well. Maybe I’d let Thompson and Bailey come up and work out of the bullpen. Let Fogg go out and get his brains beat in.
95 mph
94 mph
Votto is Mr. September
I hope he gets to be Mr. October in the near future.
It’s up to The Crappy One again to take the lead…
Is Votto getting traded to a winning team Jim?
94 mph
85 mph
84 mph
I was skeptical of Votto last summer, but I am absolutely a believer. He may not be a perennial all-star, but he’s going to be Adrian Gonzalez Lite (w/o the glove).
Bako, on the other hand, still stinks. Even if he gets a bloop to fall in here.
Two people within 10 feet of me have had foul balls fall into their laps. Bastards.
Thanks Kurt. He looked pretty good. His sinker is nasty.
Is Votto getting traded to a winning team Jim?
Worked for Ross, Dunn and Griffey
I don’t know what I think would be better for Bailey. At the beginning of the season I remember advocating that he spend some time in big-league long relief, to figure out how to pitch major leaguers without the pressure of starting. I also think it could be useful to send him back down to single A with the statement that he needs to work his way back up through the system.
I think that Bailey needs something drastic, and the getting-sent-down-to-A-ball thing seemed to work for Volquez (and also Roy Halladay, as it happens, in 2000)
No back-to-back Home Runs by the Crappy-Bakoo duo?
Patterson .199, Bako, .204,
How far did Crappy’s hit travel?
The Bats have now left 87 men on base.
Patterson .199, Bako, .204,
How fitting it would be for them to both hit below .200.
Wow, did you guys see the bat’s mascot do that back handspring?!
The Bats have now left 87 men on base.
Have the Reds even had that many base runners since Dunn left?
“The Mendoza Line is an informal term used in baseball for when a position player’s batting average falls below the boundary between extremely poor and merely below-average offensive production, or the offensive threshold below which players’ presence in the Major Leagues cannot be justified despite their defensive abilities”
The dude in that suit is pretty limber. Earlier he threw a t-shirt to the top of the stadium.
Congrats to Wilkin Castillo for his first major league hit.
Looking at his swing, I don’t predict many more.
The Dunn trade is paying dividends!
Let’s here it for that fine Reds scouting department.
“Have the Reds even had that many base runners since Dunn left?”
I checked on baseball-reference to count our baserunners because it would have been funny if we hadn’t, but unfortunately, the answer is yet, we’ve had that many baserunners.
*hear*
C’mon guys, let’s think positive.
The Reds announcers seem remarkably excited by the simple fact that Castillo can catch as well as play other positions.
Which is ironic, since they never miss a chance to remind us that Javy Valentin “isn’t really a catcher.”
I guess defensive versatility is only valuable if you can’t hit.
I checked on baseball-reference to count our baserunners because it would have been funny if we hadn’t, but unfortunately, the answer is yet, we’ve had that many baserunners.
How much did they squeak by with?
Keppinger would really be falling from grace if anyone was watching.
No 16th win for Voltron.
In good news, this seriously decreases the chances of him being overworked in the pursuit of a meaningless individual honor.
I would bet Keppinger’s knee still bothers him.
Speaking of staying positive I’m leaving.
Chris,
You mean like tonight when he was sent back out with 100+ pitches an inning after getting rocked?
Wouldn’t it be great to be in the booth with Marty to do a game sometime?
Hey, Marty. You see that Dunn had a walk-off double today?
Hey, Marty. Did you see that Dunn is on base almost 50% of the time for Arizona?
Hey, Marty. Did you see that Dunn is playing some 1B for the Diamondbacks?
Hey, Marty. Did you see Bob Melvin saw what a great influence Dunn is for their young hitters?
Hey, Marty. You ever ask Dusty why he plays Patterson and Bako so much?
Hey, Marty.
Hey, Marty.
Hey, Marty.
Hey, Marty.
Hey, Marty.
Wouldn’t it be a blast?
From top to bottom…management, coaching, offense (clogging or unclogging the bases), defense, starting pitching, relief pitching…I see no part of this team that does not need substantial improvement for next year. Might as well Keep Votto, Bruce, Volquez, Cueto, Harang and the rest can go starting with Dusty Baker and his foolish decisions on players.
Oh goodie, Mike Lincoln
That’s some Double Play Specialist George. Thanks Dusty another brilliant decision.
Does it seem odd that the Reds have brought up the Louisville announcer again, while the Bats are playing in their playoffs? Is Brantley getting an early start on looking for another job?
Dayton wins 3-1 Horst with win…Guess we have to look to high A ball to be a happy Reds fan.
mhopp, Dayton is low A, although I guess Sarasota didn’t lose today (because their season is over) is better than what the Reds are doing.
Bats lose 3-0
I think Louisville was only a one game playoff…is that correct?
BP with the 2 pitch out
Is Brantley getting an early start on looking for another job?
One can only hope as long as they don’t replace him some other bozo.
Wow, First Dusty pinch hits for the black hole, then it so far pays off.
Come on Hanigan!
Whoa!!! PHing for Crappy. Will wonders never cease.
It has to be a Dusty look-a-like. Dusty would never do this to his boys.
Ran out of legit PHers.
I really like the patience of these young players…seems someone has been coaching them well??? Too bad the Reds manager likes his “proven veterans” which are actually just “proven losers”
Kudos for Dusty coming to terms with having to bat for two of his favorites and it scored a run.
Man that sucks.
It’s too bad Javier Valentin isn’t an actual switch hitter. Could’ve used a better right handed option off the bench.
Louisville is in a best-of-5 playoff series. Dayton is playing in a best-of-3.
What’s with all these Pirates running wild on the Reds? They had something like 35 SB on the season coming into this series, and two games in they’ve added 5 more.
Since it was mentioned earlier:
Marty did just report the result of the AZ game and how it came about on the Adam Dunn double…but only in the context of what its effect was on the NL West race. Just the facts, submitted without comment.
Are these guys for real? “Neither one backing up, toe to toe”
Isn’t this a great picture of our possible future Vice President?
BP was better than last time…this time a 3 pitch out…thanks again Dusty for playing the young guys, Hanigan got one time up…thanks again!
I’m at the Bats playoff game. There are seriously 1,500 people here
3,521 tonight in Louisville
Well, it’s a good photoshop relating to the vice presidential nominee…
Right, they have to be counting season ticket holders because if there were 3,000 people there I will eat a green pepper.
Why didn’t anyone say anything about Adam Dunn hitting a walk off double today for the dbacks?
the team with good players, in the pennant race, had their best player and a better player than ANY Red hit a game winning hit.
I think it’s been 15-20 years since the Reds could say something like that
I wish the Reds were in the race so Dunn could knock them out of it.
go on praising Brandon Phillips and Corey Patterson because they make a good defense play once every 20 games.
we will now return to our normal programming, which is watching a cheap poorly run team milk money from working people.
Is Brantley getting an early start on looking for another job?
One can only hope as long as they don’t replace him some other bozo.
interesting question.

Hey, Marty.
Hey, Marty.
Hey, Marty.
Hey, Marty.
Wouldn’t it be a blast?
awesome!
That would be great.
Hey Marty, why do you always like the no-hit speedy guys?
Hey Marty, why is it that your view changes on a player based more on your mood than on how they are playing?
Hey Marty can you spell OPS?
Hey Marty are you drunk again or is that slur and hateful nature natural?
Ummm have you heard George Grande mike?
yeah and actually he’s not bad (compared to the rest, I know many better among the amateur ranks).
