A Cause We Can All Support

Corey Patterson for Assignment

Change we can believe in, indeed. Or maybe we can keep his .195 batting average and .233 on-base percentage around for 2009.

I have been bitter about CP’s continuing playing time, but it must be painful for him to go to the park knowing that all of the fans want him cut.

I am sure the 4 million eases the pain somewhat, but still….

You know, we all joke (well not really joke) about the CP situation and how absurd it is. But it is one of those situations where when you stop and really think about it, you realize it is even more absurd than you think.

This man has been given 272 ABs. His OPS + is 46. 46!!!! He has appeared in 106 games and gotten on base 67 times.

While he is not bad with the glove, he’s not exactly stellar either. We’re not dealing with San Diego-era Ozzie Smith or Aurelio Rodriguez (maybe the greatest defensive 3B of all time). Both of whom were much better hitters anyway.

In other words, this is a historically bad season.

Anyone else almost start to feel sorry for him? I mean he’s out there almost every game trying his hardest and he is just awful. We know it. He knows it. Announcers know it. The team has to know it. The dude has got to have some pride so I doubt the money is too comforting.
Since I feel so sorry for him I believe they should initiate a mercy DFA.

  • You cannot, CANNOT, feel sorry for Patterson. This guy is 5 months (heck, 5 years) into a season/career and has yet to make an adjustment to his swing. It’s insanity to go out there and expect positive results when you have been proven wrong as many times as he has. Didn’t not having a job this spring scare him into doing something?? This guy is in love with his occasional power, and like most guys nowadays, does not have a 2 strike swing when he gets in the hole. I blame the money. Guys don’t care about K’s, which is fine for the slow power guys, but inexcuseable for Patterson.

I do feel bad for Patterson. He seems to be giving it an honest effort. He’s just terrible, and his “friend” Dusty Baker is not doing him any favors whatsoever by continuing to embarass him.

  • He’ll be back next year if Dusty has a say.

It would really be astonishing if Patterson gets a major league contract here or anywhere after the season he’s having. It’s getting to be nearly indefensible. It would be like admitting “we don’t even look at past performance.”

Re: “I do feel bad for Patterson”

it does make me wonder what if anything our hitting coach has even tried. Patterson’s swing is SOOOO long and slow . His weight shift is nil.

If the regulars that were here last year.
    Jr hit worse this year
Phillips is hitting worse this year
    EE better
    Keppinger worse
    Dunn worse

Votto and Bruce are new and out 3-headed catcher I can’t even figure out.

Patterson has been AWFUL on a historic scale, even he was WAY better last year and for his career. Plus he’s 28. Shouldn’t he be peaking?

    SHOW THEM ALL THE DOOR

In the end, Patterson is just a guy who not only should have never made this team but a player who should have been giving Jr and Bruce a rest every once in a while and never gotten over 150 PA. In other words the blame is on Dusty, not Patterson.

EE has definately not gotten better this year. He’s hit more for power and is walking more(career highs in HR and BB’s also on pace for career high SO’s). His RBI numbers are down and before anyone says “well that isn’t his fault” It is his own fault. He doesn’t hit when the runners are in front of him. I also wouldn’t say that Keppinger is hitting worse. He’s hitting around his normal career average and has suffered a broken knee.

Wasn’t Jacoby originally brought in to help Dunn out primarily? Maybe Dusty will want to bring in his own hitting coach for next year.

  • EE can’t knock in runs when no one is getting on base.

Except that EE has been batting behind Adam Dunn who…gets on base.

In 214(almost half is total PA) plate appearances, EE has gone 39-178(.209) with men on base. with the bases loaded he’s gone 1-13(.077). The one hit he has was a weak grounder that the third basemen had to charge for and didn’t make the play. In 2007, in 262 PA he went 75-231(.325) with men on base. With the bases loaded 8-17(.471). I still like EE and think he has huge offensive potential but he has taken a leap backward at the plate. Unless maybe next year he can figure out a balance of being patient and getting hits otherwise we’re looking at a less powerful and less patient version of Dunn which would be awful. It’s kind of bizarre.

Yeah, he gets on 1st. He’s too slow to score from 1st on anything but a HR.

Last year, EdE hit w/ RISP at rates that were way beyond what should have been expected. This year it’s been way below. These things do even out.

And yes, I have felt sorry for CP. But, Sultan is right. This guy has a lot of “tools” but he hasn’t shown any willingness to adapt his game and turn himself into an average player. There is no shame in being an average MLB player. Instead, he wants to be Willie Mays.

Not to mention that the money he is making makes it hard to feel sorry for him.

I do not feel sorry for Patterson. I do, however, feel sorry for Joey Votto, Jay Bruce, and Chris Dickerson, who worked their butts off to get to the majors only to play with this bunch of losers. All the work they put in to get here, and look at this team. This is the standard they were trying to reach so they could be considered “ready”? Half of this team could be DFA’d and no other team would pick them up. It’s a shame to put young players through this.

What’s there to be sorry for regarding Patterson? This is pro ball, you either do or you don’t. Plus he’s collecting checks for $4 mil.

He is being paid 3 million dollars not 4. Why should anyone feel sorry for him? Maybe the fact that the dude is now HATED in two cities by hundreds more likely thousands of people for something he lacks rather than something he said or did. He’s a whipping boy in Chicago and in Cincinnati. He doesn’t get paid to be hated and insulted every time he takes the field. I’m not arguing that he is good or worth even a fraction of what he’s being paid but come on. I will NEVER understand how someone can think it’s fine and dandy to just rip apart and for some people wish physical harm on a guy because he’s not good at his job but earns a large paycheck.

Baseball is a peformance based business. While I can feel sorry for CP as a person, form a performance based position, there’s really no justification for him getting the amount of playing time that he is.

That being said, I agree with Phil, some folks have taken their dislike for CP as a player and went way too far.

The dislike needs to go to the coaches! If someone told you that you’ve got the potential and to stay at the MLB level and get that many AB’s what would you do? You would do what you’re told, that’s what! I don’t dislike CP as a person but do dislike Dusty Baker and the people who decide to play him every day…I agree give the man a merciful DFA, it has to be an embarrassment for him and his family. What a mess…I do not however, feel bad for Dusty as he is simply hard-headed and doesn’t want to try something different.
