Man, this season isn’t over yet? Sheesh.

If you’re watching Johnny Cueto and Rich Harden tonight, discuss it here.

Wondering if pulling Hairston early last game is the lingering hammy problem.

Worth to note, if I remember right the last time the Reds faced Harden they messed him up in Oakland.

You would think with Dusty’s love for righty-lefty he’d have played Jolbert Cabrera in left(he’s 1-3 against Harden) and moved Dickerson over to CF.

Just realized I called Harden a lefty…my bad.

I HATE that hop Soriano does. And that most of these guys don’t know how to take a pitch or two.

Were those really the Reds on the field just then? Because those were some terrifically smart defensive plays.

It’s definitely Reds at the plate…6 out of 10 of them have struck out.

I thought they traded away their strikeout problem. :?

Corey Paterson hasn’t struck out tonight! He popped out instead! I can’t stand to even see his picture on MLB.
Worth mentioning that Travis Wood took a perfect game into the 7th inning and a no-hitter into the 8th but gave up a homerun 3-1 Chattanooga

Oh how I hate the cubs. Somebody tell me how many starts Hanigan has had since his callup? This is insane. How do they send us that letter about giving the youth crew as much playing time as possible, and in the same night let Dumpy start Patterson and Bako?

  • What the heck is EE thinking? He has more mental errors than any third base in the league. Sheesh!

  • Can Troy Aikman hit or play defense? Sign him up.

Patterson isn’t blocking any young guy right now. He was when Dunn was around(Dickerson) but the only thing blocking the young guys is that they haven’t been in Triple-A yet or long enough.

Hanigan has started 4 games. Each one the Reds lost(not trying to say something with that).

Hanigan needs to start more. I’m fine with Bako catching the young guys and trying to help them mature but if it ain’t Cueto or Volquez let Hanigan catch.

I’m not sure EE is to blame on that bunt.

    1. Bako was clearly pointing at first.
    2. The catcher is the boss.
    3. Thom thinks EE should’ve turned around and checked, but if he did, he can’t get the out at first.

Am I wrong on these? I could be.

I looked up the Bako starts, and as it turns out Bako’s 4 starts of the 8 games since Hanigan’s callup were 2 with Cueto and 2 with Volquez. So I guess it makes some sense that Hanigan has only started half the games. But, how important is it that Bako keeps catching them? It’s great that’s been helping them out, but Hanigan caught Cueto in AAA, and I sure hope Bako’s not catching them next year, so maybe they should start getting used to having games called by other catchers, right? Hanigan might be calling some of their games next year (although I hope they bring in someone else).

Chris, you aren’t wrong. I saw that play as Edwin picking up the veteran catcher Bako who was telling him what to do. If he turns to get Soto I’m not sure Keppinger was covering third and he would’ve wasted too much time to get Harden at first.

God I hate the f’n Cubs.

When is somebody going to teach these Reds hitters patience? No walks. 105 pitches by the Cubs staff.

What bothers me the most about this is that we haven’t gotten enough REAL information about why Bako is supposedly so good with the Latin guys.

I mean, what gives? Is Bako fluent in Spanish or something? I’d like to think I follow the Reds pretty closely, and I’ve never seen any feature concerning this topic. I’m sure someone here can correct me on that if it’s common knowledge.

BUT, from what I’ve gathered, it’s all hearsay from a layman Redsfan perspective. Is this just something we’re told, rumor, or is it fact.

Frankly, if it is fact, I’d like Erardi or somebody respectable to enlighten me a bit more, because his .210 average and limited defensive skills needs some serious justifying…..

AND, as far as Edwin goes (as much as I like him and his “potential”), how long will the brass let him go as is?

Obviously, he’s light years above Brandon Larson, but, at the same time, nowhere near what we were expecting at this point.

I’m sure all Reds fans were expecting this to be his breakout year, yet he has regressed, frankly.

I think the powers-that-be give him one more year to realize his seemingly top-tier potential.

Does anyone know how close THEY are to giving up on him? Personally, I think it would be too early if they did. He’s still young, and could really take off next year (or even the year after) at 26 or 27.

I agree that EE has underperformed (my) expectations this year.

That said, he’s still a good player for the money he’s making.

As for Bako, it’s certainly a mystery. But a familiar one — ever heard of a .210 hitting catcher who wasn’t hailed as a wiz at “handling pitchers.” It’s un-dis-provable, so it’s what you go with when a guy doesn’t hit or throw out runners.

Well, it’s like you said, “un-dis-prov-able”. Why is that?

Talk about stretching “intangibles” (always my favorite when attempting to classify ballplayers):

Why hasn’t some “in-the-know” journalist – or even better, former ballplayer (preferably a catcher or pitcher – hello, Cowboy?) given us “out-of-the-loop amateurs out here in fan-dom”, some REAL analysis and insight concerning the value and inner-workings of a “young-pitcher-handling-genius” (in this case, young Spanish-speaking dudes) like Paul Bako?

Seriously, is there something we don’t know about…..or is it truly just Dusty? My goodness, I really hope it’s not just the latter.

Yeah, okay, that’s a lot of hyphens, parentheses, and quotations, I know, but this team lends itself to sarcasm more than any in recent memory considering the fact that I actually believed, for a change, that they were truly going to be competitive this year.

Again, can Bako’s supposed excellence in handling young pitchers truly justify his presence on this roster?

I REALLY would like to know, and considering this team would not exist without gullible fans like myself, I also consider it my right.

Correct me if I’m wrong but a catcher’s main job is calling games and handling the pitching staff. Offensive prowess is all a bonus. Obviously you would like a guy to at least hit .250 but it doesn’t always work out like that.

Considering where the team is at this point in the season I’d make sure Bako caught Volquez and Cueto and whichever other young guys come up by the end of the season. Hanigan can stand to learn from the older pitchers and the younger pitchers can stand to learn from Bako the veteran catcher.
