From KTAR.com in Arizona:
Sports 620 KTAR’s John Gambadoro reports the Arizona Diamondbacks have acquired outfielder Adam Dunn from the Cincinnati Reds.
The Diamondbacks have Monday off, but start a NL West series in Colorado on Tuesday night.
Dunn is expected to start in right field.
The Diamondbacks are giving up three prospects in the deal, minor league pitcher Dallas Buck and two other players to be named later.
Dunn has 32 home runs in 2008 with 74 RBI. His average this season is .233. He has 270 home runs in his career, currently in his eighth Major League season, spending his entire career in Cincinnati.
Dunn has hit 40 or more home runs the past four seasons and is on pace to eclipse that mark again this season. He has also struck out 165 times or more in those seasons, currently with 120 this season.
The Diamondbacks will now have three of the top five strikeout leaders in the National League. Mark Reynolds is second with 147 and Chris Young is third with 122.
Throughout his career in the big leagues Dunn has played either corner outfield position while also getting some time in at first base. He has not played first base since the 2006 season and that was only in two games.
The Diamondbacks have seen their NL West lead shrink to a-game-and-a-half over the Los Angeles Dodgers.
There’s another shoe….I’m disgusted.

It is official according to Ken Rosenthal and MLBTradeRumors. Well here is hoping to a White Sox/DBacks Series.
I give up. Anyone want to cheer for the Rays with me?
This is terrible. I had a lot of optimism with Castellini and with Jocketty when he took over for Krivsky who I liked. However I have yet to see many (if any) good decisions come from this.
Terrible trade
I have no words.
Just read it on ESPN.com. I’m with Ellis…Go Rays!
Went to the game Saturday night, took my brother, we looked forward to that game the day I got my tickets through a work promotion (that was two months ago). I have never been so disappointed in my game experience. My free Bronson Arroyo designed t-shirt presented by CBS Personnel will now be a car-cleaning rag and I think I can start wearing my OSU cap to work in the morning.
um…wha….
ok, i can understand trading Dunn in some respects. But this is what you get for a OF who regularly posts a .900 OPS? A pitching “prospect” who has a TJ surgery and two players to be named?
I’ll put it down to a decision that despite his bat, Dunn wasn’t worth the money.
This trade should also be a clue for folks who still think that any of the Reds’ starters can bring another starter in a trade.
This is likely a franchise crippling trade. Even if we weren’t going to resign him, the 2 compensatory picks would have trumped this dogshit deal 1000 times over.
This is insanity.
Well, TBH, it’s not like the Reds were actually any good with Dunn. Not that their failure was in any way Dunn’s fault, but it’s all just a matter of degrees of awefulness at this point.
I had tickets to go to this Friday’s game against the Cardinals, but I’m turning them down now and giving them back to the guy I got them from. I don’t want to pay to go watch Corey Patterson show why no other team wanted him this year.
So anyone think that Corey Patterson isn’t getting re-signed now?
The only optimism I have in this is that Votto will move to LF now and 1b will be Yonder’s spot.
That is, of course, if he actually signs
I quit.
Did you ever stop to consider that the Reds approached Dunn for an extension and Dunn told them I want X and you can’t give it to me?
I’m sick to death of people jumping to conclusions and thinking that the Reds aren’t doing everything in their power to improve the club from both the business side and the talent side. The decision was easy if Dunn says I’m not re-siging.
The question probably came down to looking at prospects projected in the 16-50 range and determining whether Buck was better than those players.
I have noticed that a lot of people who complain about trades have absolutely no understanding of the business aspect of running a franchise.
Personally, I’m thrilled the Dunn/Griffey/Kearns era is officially over. It got us absolutely nothing. Big offense gets you money, but wins what exactly?
Well it’s been a pretty arduous season up until this point, but this has just broken my will.
I have to wonder how much of this is being driven by Castellini. He showed that he could be quite impetuous with the Krivsky firing, could this all be in response to their poor play of late? Cause if they were going to have a fire sale, I would think the best time to do it would have been BEFORE the non-waiver deadline.
All I keep wondering is how in the world this team is gonna score any runs next year.
The S.S. Redleg is going down with a thud.
david:
I question your knowledge of team and roster construction if you think an injured pitcher is worth more than two high compensation picks.
Adam dunn is our only power guy
now look at it
we have an Outfield of Dickerson patterson and Bruce
only one name in there sounds worth anything.
i say we boycott.
bye bye reds
I think cheering for the Rays would be too much of a shock to my system. I might go with the Pirates, they are tough to watch now, but have some hope for the future.
David, your point has merit, but there are a bunch of ifs there and the players to be named later would have to be better than Buck. He does not apeear to be anywhere near a top prospect for them, and if he is the best you can get in a trade, keep Dunn to give us something to watch and take the picks.
This was long over due. Dunn was good for short bursts of incredible production followed by extended periods of subpar performance. It wasnt working with him or Jr. It was well past time to blow it up. IMO this is a trade we should have done last offseason. Now we can start promoting all those young players who have been over do for them for most of the season. Dickerson can come up, Henry, Valaika & Dorn can go to AAA. Let Rosales handle 1st everyday for the rest of the season, Votto to left, Dickerson to CF. Let the kids play.
#12:
It’s not that Dunn was traded, it’s what we got back for him. You speak of understanding the business aspect of the game. Well the smart business decision would have been to offer Dunn arbitration, watch him turn it down and get the 1st round draft picks and sandwich round pick.
Amazing. How many games left – 40? They’ll be lucky if they score 3 runs/game the rest of the way.
Folks, Dickerson is not a major league quality starting outfielder. His ceiling, according to everyone I’ve read, is a 4th OF.
Buck isn’t even ranked in the DBacks top 20 prospects. Blaaaaaaah!
Maybe Brandon Webb and Dan Haren are the PTBNLs!
Good post David. You are absolutely correct.
Don’t jump to conclusions about the values of the players in return. I would bet the two players to be named are better than the Class A pitcher. The Reds probably do not have roster room so the D-Backs have to agreee to hold on to them until that can be resolved.
I’ve been watching the Rays for the past month and a half already.
Good news (tongue in cheek) Dragons get a pitcher for the stretch drive.
Didn’t everybody overreact when the Reds traded Kearns and Lopez? Can we at least see who the other two players are? What, are the Reds going to finish last without Dunn? Oh, they are last with him.
And we’re picking up $2 mil of Dunn’s salary. What a joke.
This is honestly just depressing. If Dunn wasn’t going to resign, trading him was the right thing to do, but trading for garbage isn’t going to help.
If we had offered Dunn arb, we would be stuck at a $15-17M contract because Adam is no dummy … the lack of trade interest in him at the deadline says it all. He isnt going to get that kind of a contract on the open market but he would have in arbitration. Dunn would have accepted the arb offer and the Reds would have been stuck with an under performing players at an unacceptable salary and no draft picks. We werent going to get a Top 20 prospect from anyone because of the same lack of interest in trading for him in the 1st place. People need to realize that our players will never be valued as highly as we think they should be. Dunn is no Sabbathia or Haren and he isnt going to draw any top prospects. If we get 3 decent prospects out of it, so much the better. Dunn was on a losing team for a reason. He isnt fully responsible but he wasnt totally blameless either. He is only good for short stretches of high production. He will never justify the salary we were going to have to pay him to keep him because he isnt consistant enough to warrant it. Pujols makes the same dough as Adam and Adam doesnt come close to his prduction. Nuff said.
The players to be named could be nameless because it hasn’t been a full year since they signed – could be a decent pick or two from last year’s draft?
One more thought. They are in last place with him, they can do the same without him.
I don’t see how we can call the trade garbage merely hours after. I’m ticked that Dunn is gone but I can’t judge the return yet. Nobody really can. Mabye in a year or two or maybe when we find out who the PTBL’s are.
Riiiight. 900 OPS players grow on trees.
Could be, DA. That’s what I’m hoping.
This is great news for all the mouth-breathers who call WLW. I predict you’ll get a lot of cheap shots from the likes of Marty Brennaman and Jeff Brantley.
Keep the fantasy stats and give me baseball players!
Also free agent interest and trade interest are two different things. Nobody wants to trade young players for a rental. He could command a lot of interest in free agency however.
true
Who replaces dunn next year?
Pat Burrell?
Raul Ibanez?
or centerfield
i like Rocco Baldelli
How about
Next years reds
1. Danny Richar 2B
2. Joey Votto 1B
3. Brandon Phillips SS
4. Pat Burrell LF
5. Jay Bruce RF
6. Eddy Encarnacion 3B
7. Rocco Baldelli CF
8. Ryan Hanigan C
Rotation
Aaron Harang
Edinson Volquez
Johnny Cueto
Daryl Thompson
and anyone except Arroyo and Fogg
If Brandon Phillips has moved to shortstop this year I don’t think they are going to move him.
I haven’t said much about terrible decisions by this club this year, but this is absolutely unbelievable. To give away the league leader in home runs with an OBP of .373 for a pitcher that might not ever be good enough to play in the majors and 2 scrubs to be named later is a joke. This may be worse than the Kearns/Lopez deal when its all said and done…at least we got a usually solid reliever (Bray) and another bargaining chip (Harris) out of that deal.
Keep the fantasy stats and give me baseball players!
Like who? Corey Patterson? He isn’t guilty of piling up “fantasy stats.”
We better not sign Burrell. I like him, but we need to keep our draft picks. We can match his total value by getting someone who is a great defender, and it won’t cost us a pick.
Any teams out there want a washed up old play by play guy? I’m done with this team.
Hah. Today’s the best day of your season, Marty.
Of course, it may be difficult to call games w/o your favorite scapegoat.
Corey Patterson outlasted Dunn. Wow.
It amazes me that some people have deluded themselves into thinking Adam Dunn is some elite player. The home run ball will always win you fans…
Interesting thought: Someone on WLW a few weeks ago brought up the possibility of trading Dunn at the deadline, then resigning him when he becomes a free agent at the end of the year. Wouldn’t that be something?
This frees up an outfield spot for Matt HOliday!!!!!!! How awesome would that be?????
Joey Votto will now play LF so that the Reds can sign Neifi Perez to play 1B.
Elite? Who knows?
I do know that he has 10 more HR than anyone else on this team; an OBP 28 points higher (ironically, DFA’ed Dave Ross was even better); and 41 pts more SLG than any teammate.
If we re-sign him then WE give ARIZONA 2 draft picks… exactly what we would’ve received if we kept him and let him walk.
That’s the key thing w/ evaluating this trade — you HAVE to get value that is AT LEAST comparable to the compensatory picks we’d get — basically two top-40 or top-50 picks.
(Sorry for the all caps… I’m a little disgruntled… I’m sure all the D’back fans are nice and gruntled though.)
Warning – Matt Holliday is an average hitter. He’s a product of Coors. Whoever signs him is going to overpay.
Check out his career home/road splits. He’s an average hitter away from Coors.
Elite?
Since 2004, he has more homeruns than anyone in the game of baseball except A-Rod (never heard of him), more walks than anyone, and a career OBP of .380. Other than that, dude sucks.
Adam Dunn isn’t an elite player, but he is an elite power hitter who does a good job getting on base. That’s worth more than a single A minor league pitcher who’s already had Tommy John surgery. Hopefully the other two minor leaguers are a little more exciting.
On the plus side: Buck has a career 3.48 ERA so far with a 1.17 WHIP.
Coors isn’t exactly a hitter’s dream anymore.
But seriously, what the hell? Why not wait for the draft picks? This is idiotic.
I don’t care whether he’s elite or not. All I know is that Dunn was the best player on the Reds, and it wasn’t even close. Offensively, the Reds will never be able to match his production next year…and that makes me sick to my stomach. This team is going to be even WORSE next year.
Try to imagine that, if you can.
Hopefully the fans in Arizona will appreciate the things he does well, because he does a lot of them.
I suspect the players won’t be named until after players on the 40-man roster can be traded without first clearing waivers. The new waiver period typically begins a couple of weeks after the World Series ends. The teams must agree which players will be traded within six months of today, so none of this year’s draftees could be included (but some of last year’s could be).
Reds play in AZ next month, September 12-14. Think Dunn will be like his buddy Kearns and hit about .600 off his former team?
Just heard the Captain, Brandon Phillips, on WLW. He sounded pretty unhappy.
Really? It’s “his team,” now. He claimed it and Marty seconded it.
Keep OPS, SLG,OBA, etc. Only stat we should be worried about is Winning Pct. How many .900 OPS guys on the Rays and Twins? But they have winning pct.
Lets face it, its time to blow this thing up and start over. Thank goodness management is finally getting it.
Look, this season is over, and it has been for sometime. Lets look at the reasoning behind the 2 trades…NEXT SEASON.
We drop Dunn, Griffey, and Patterson’s salaries/options, and we suddenly become a team with a dedicated payroll of some $40 million. Free agency, anyone?
And, for the yayhoo who claims that Holliday is an “average” hitter away from Coors field…why don’t you check the stats since he’s been hitting there? I’m pretty sure you’ll find that GABP is a better hitters’ park since he’s been there. I personally would gladly accept a .350 hitter with .950 OPS in my home park all year. GABP has yet to see one since being built.
If the Reds are gonna “blow this thing up,” why does that entail getting rid of the good players? Shouldn’t they be getting rid of the bad players?
It kills me. People always want to blame the best players when a team doesn’t do well. That, of course, makes no sense. Adam Dunn was one of the last reasons for the Reds crappy season.
I bet the re sign Dunn at the end of the season. Castalooni likes him and he’s a fan favorite for smashing homeruns. In the process, maybe the Reds will get something for sending him to AZ. This season has been over since the end of May when Crusty Baker refused to take that gay lover of his out of the game. Baker and his irrational decisions are a big part of the Reds woes.
There isn’t one chance in a million that the Reds sign Dunn as a free agent. It will never happen. I wish it weren’t so, but that’s just wishful thinking.
The Reds never appreciated Dunn while he was here; I’d say they’re happy he is gone.
Hey WT, “yayhoo” here…
Matt Holliday, career
Home – .365/.430/.664
Road – .280/.345/.457
Its not 900 – its only 899 for Morneau
And Longoria is at 875 and Pena is substantially hitting over 900 since he returned from the DL.
Here’s what Holliday’s hit at GABP for his career (though, granted, it’s a very small sample — just 55 PA’s)…
Holliday
at GABP .269/.309/.442
Average park factors (for runs), 2004-2008:
Coors – 1.2434 (inflates scoring by about 24%)
GABP – 1.0352 (inflates scoring by about 3.5%)
http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/stats/parkfactor?season=2008
Matt Holliday isn’t a free agent until 2010…why are we discussing him?
Oh well now Brandon Phillips can be officially named the new scapegoat for the Reds. And once the fans run him out of town they can work on Votto and Bruce…afterall they’ve been brought up in a culture of losing!
>>”Dunn was the best player on the Reds…”
That’s a very telling asertion. A guy who produces an out eight of ten times at the plate is the best player on a disfunctional dispirited team.
Dunn was in town for, what, 5 years? Look how that worked out.
Dunn produced an out 6 out of 10 times. Your math is screwy. Or are you just convenient forgetting that Dunn got on base more than any other Red?
And why would you blame Dunn for what hasn’t worked out over the last 5 years? Why not blame the players who didn’t contribute as much?
Honestly, why doesn’t anyone harp on Brandon Phillips’ shortcomings as much as they do Dunn’s. People always hate Dunn for what he isn’t, rather than liking him for what he is good at.
Wait a minute… Dunn’s career OBP is .380. That means he makes an out 62% of the time.
Since when have facts gotten in the way of a good Adam Dunn rant? I hope to see him in the World Series this year. Good luck to him.
Here’s to a Chicago-Arizona World Series!
Here’s to Dusty Baker choking on a toothpick
Dave Miley’s son killed in car crash. I think we should all keep him and his family in prayer. He was 17 years old.
That’s a very telling asertion. A guy who produces an out eight of ten times at the plate is the best player on a disfunctional dispirited team.
You mean produces an out six out of every ten times. Get the math right. A walk is not an out.
Let’s use the Dunn haters logic. The Reds haven’t been a winner ever since they moved to GABP. Let’s blow it up because it must be the reason.
I’m very sorry to hear of Dave Miley’s loss. A parent’s worst nightmare.
Goodness, that news about Miley’s son makes me sick to my stomach. Very sad. We’ll keep that family in our prayers.
Makes it hard to be upset about any trade, doesn’t it.
I was thinking you guys might be much happier once you hear who the PTBNLs are, but apparently the lovefest for Dunn and his atrocious ability to hit is so profound that nothing this side of Graeter’s Black Cherry will apparently do any good.
I actually bought me a Brooklyn Dodgers hat today so I dind’t have to wear my Reds hat around the mall today.
IM SICK! Done with the Reds, at least this season.
You should wait and see who’s coming in. I’m telling ya. And this move is going to set up another that could be a whopper return.
And really, Chris, wear the hat through thick and thin. Nobody really cares, and if they say something, you snap back, “I’m no bandwagoner.” Always shuts ‘em up.
Awesome meltdwons!
Awesome meltdowns!
heard a bag of balls was included in the deal too
Now, I understand wanting to unload Dunn … but the Reds got SQUAT
“Now, I understand wanting to unload Dunn … but the Reds got SQUAT”
Uh, they considerably better than squat. Wait and see.
How do you know? The trade isn’t complete until we know who the other two players are.
Since 2004, he has more homeruns than anyone in the game of baseball except A-Rod (never heard of him), more walks than anyone, and a career OBP of .380. Other than that, dude sucks.
Comparing Dunn to A-Rod is asinine. The season Dunn is able to bring his average up 70 points, strike out 70 fewer times, and actually play above average defense, we’ll talk.
I DONT KNOW WHERE THE REDS ARE GOING TO GET MONEY FOR FREE AGENTS. WHO THE HELL IS GOING TO PAY FOR TICKETS TO WATCH THIS JOKE FOR THE NEXT TWO MONTHS? I’M GOING TO WATCH LOUISVILLE… ALTHOUGH DUSTY’S BUDDY BARRY IS OUT THERE THE REDS WOULD PROBABLY GIVE HIM A FOUR YEAR DEAL AND FUND HIS PRISON STAY
I know the team was probably not going to sign him next year but its amazing how little the Reds are going to get for Dunn.
