Game Thread: Astros at Reds — 2008.08.10

Well, the Reds are in danger of being swept today by Houston, but the good news is that Aaron Harang is making his first start since going on the disabled list. Let’s hope it’s the Harang we’ve all grown to love over the last few years.

Discuss it here….

Ross DFA’d, Hanigan up. Homer out, Harang in. Per Fay.

I see that David Ross was designated for assignment today, in favor of Ryan Hanigan.

Is that for real? Does this team have any clue? Why Ross, instead of Bako or even ValentĂn? Why do they insist on still carrying three “catchers”? And why now, instead of either two months ago, or wait another 3 weeks to call up Hanigan?

The only thing that saves this is if Ross is traded for something of value.

The only thing I can think of to justify it is the fact that Hanigan is a right-handed bat and Bako is left-handed. It’s that kind of idiotic logic that keeps this organization goin’.

Does anyone else feel foolish following this joke of a team? I live less than a mile from Wrigley Field and am seriously considering defecting to my adopted hometown team…

I lived 2 miles from Wrigley, in Ravenswood, several years ago. I can understand the appeal…somewhat. But to me, the Cubs will always be a beer-and-lifestyle team that owes its support to WGN, not winning. They’re having a good year but let’s see if they blow it.

I’m ticked off they DFA’d Ross. He wasn’t amazing but he was better than Paul Bako. However I’m almost positive they didn’t dump Bako because they didn’t want two right handed catchers.

I think the way Dusty/management looks at it, Valentin is their backup first basemen. I don’t think they look at him as having any value as a catcher except in an emergency.

I’ll miss Dave Ross and his .381 OBP although I guess he wasn’t in the plans for next year anyway..

  • The worst part is that Bako, evidently, is the starter for next year’s team (barring a trade). What a joke.

I’m so sick of this team.

Sigh. Breaking ball right over the middle of the plate. Come on, Harang.

Hanigan looks like he has an excellent arm, though.

Chad, you never know. If Hanigan can hit he could easily usurp Bako in the depth chart.

I feel bad for Harang. He pitches one rehab start in a month’s span and is told allright go face the team who has just killed the Reds this whole year.

Any word on what his max pitch count is for the game? 70-80?

Well, looks like the Reds are right on course…Reds pitcher 30 pitches and Astros pitcher 13 in one inning. WHAT!! David Ross sent down? For what? He’s doing just as well as any other catcher, although Hannigan is hot at AAA. This teams sucks and I will waste little time watching this year and will not be purchasing MLB.TV next year. Once again, I’m sure that damn Dusty Baker is controlling this mess! This is absolute bull shit!

This is pathetic. Let’s just play for the #1 overall pick.

We will not win again this season. Whatever it takes to get Dusty fired, I’m all for it.

Well, I’m now a Texas Ranger fan, at least they’re respectable. Hamilton just hit a HR 111 Rbi’s and Texas will be 61-58 after a win today. Reds will be 15 games under .500 and well on their way to being worse than last year. Thanks for nothing Dusty Baker! You Suck!

Harang sure doing his part to get the Reds a #1 draft pick next year.

Who cares if we get the #1 pick next year? We’ll just do what we’re doing this year and let him go back to school.

Wow … just wow, this is what I come on to see? I am sorry, but I cant help but think Crusty has ruined this team’s pitching staff with his decisions. Harang has just been awful since the debacle in San Diego. Now they are DFAing our best hitting Catcher in favor of Valentin & Bako? Give me a break! Hanigan deserves to be up here yes, but to keep either of the two knuckle heads they did is just retarded. And still no Dickerson & CP is still on the team. Go figure … Im just surprised he isnt starting.

I knew it was Dusty Bakers fault!!

Tell me why it is Dusty’s sole fault the Reds suck. If you are talking about the players ON the team that blame goes on Krivsky AND Jocketty. The manager only affects the outcome of a handful of games over the season. Put talent on the team and you might have a talented team.

  • With Hairston, Patterson and Bako it seems like Dusty has more input than you think.

And our “high” powered offense is stuggling to hit yet another mediocre pitcher in our “hitters” park. Watch this kid throw a perfect game. A fitting end to a miserable weekend.

No perfect game, no no-hitter, no shutout. So at least they got that goin’ for ‘em.

Kurt, then your problem should be with a GM/Front office not doing what’s best for the team.

You guys don’t get the Ross decision? Over Bako? For real?

Instead of screaming about offense, you need to look at defense. Bako is one of the best playcallers and managers of a pitcher in this generation. Perhaps only Charlie O’Brien, Jason Varitek and Brad Ausmus have been better. There’s a reason Bako has stuck for so long despite his woeful offense, and it’s not because he’s a manager’s pet. He’s got a long, long line of former teammates and pitchers who love the guy. He’s going to be a very good pitching coach or manager some day.

As for Ross, the Reds hold a $3.5 mil club option on him. They were not going to pick up that option. They have a right-handed hitting catcher at AAA tearing the cover off the ball and they really need to see where they stand with him for 2009. This gives them 6-7 weeks to evaluate.

Using Bako and the word “bat” is an oxymoron.

In other words, they kept Valentin because he doesn’t have any defensive position that he plays well.

Bako is one of the best playcallers and managers of a pitcher in this generation.

Can you quantify that? Is that really the greatest need for a low moral, offensive struggling team?

I meant morale though perhaps their morals are low as well.

Do you not see five pitchers 27 and under with less than two full years of service time with really bright futures on the staff? That quantifying enough.

No, it isn’t. That is still what amounts to a subjective opinion with no quantitative basis to it.

Furthermore, if the Reds want Crash Davis to work with young pitchers then do it at Louisville.

Also, you quantified enough the need for someone to work with our young pitchers, I”m in agreement, but we’re asking you to quantify the claim that Bako is one of the best game-callers in this generation. I’d barely ever heard of the guy before this season (i’m very myopic in my baseball watching, admittedly. I follow the reds and that’s it)

I hate to state the obvious, but the Reds SUCK! At the beginning of the season I actually believed in this team. Either I don’t know shit about baseball or this team has overwhelmingly underperformed. Frankly, they’ve become embarrassing.
