Interesting read

Saw this article today on the Baseball America website, and the gist is this:

The high Class A California League is considering the transfer of a pair of franchises to the Carolina League, beginning with the 2009 season, sources familiar with the negotiations told Baseball America.

So what, you ask? The reason it attracted my attention is because the Reds have said nothing about the future of their Florida State League franchise in Sarasota. It appears that the Carolina League will not be an option, as it’ll be filled to the brim and the California League seems to be strapped financially.

Will the Reds keep their High A team in Sarasota? Move somewhere else in Florida? As someone that vacations in the Sarasota area and enjoys catching some GCL and FSL Reds teams, I hope they stay put…

  • Very interesting, and I’ve been wondering what was to become of the Sarasota Reds, as well. I’m surprised we haven’t heard any rumors, at the least.

I can’t imagine the Reds will keep the team in Sarasota after the team leaves for Arizona.

  • They also mention Richmond, VA, in that article as being right in the center of all this moving. I can’t believe there going to move another team to Richmond without a new stadium. The current stadium is the worst minor league facility I’ve been to.

Of course, the City of Richmond is dragging their feet on a new park, the last I heard.

I think they stay until the Reds move spring training to Goodyear … then they will worry about where to transfer our Gulf Coast League & Florida State League teams too.

Agree with Ron. And the Richmond situation is pathetically ridiculous. If they’re lucky they’ll get an A-ball team. That’s better than an A-ball market and you’d figure Washington would like to get its AA or AAA team closer than Harrisburg or Columbus.
