Game Thread: Reds at Nats — 2008.08.03

Yep, the Reds have lost 7 of their last 8, and if I’m not careful, I’m going to start getting frustrated.

Johnny Cueto takes the hill today in an attempt to help the Reds avoid a sweep at the hands of the lowly Nationals. Yes, I will be watching. Discuss it here with me.

Unless Hairston goes back on the DL and Dickerson gets a call-up to replace him on the roster, we’re going to be watching Patterson for a while. But a few more 2-4 performances, and before we know it he’ll be back at .200! And, dare to dream, a .230 on-base percentage!

  • Yep, can’t complain about Patterson’s performance yesterday.

My thoughts exactly, without some serious moves this off season, I dont see any way we can be optimistic going into spring training next year.

Just thought I’d stop in and say there is only one way to go from here…that’s up because the Reds are on the bottom. Damn they suck!

  • At least Austin Kearns is hitting the ball well this weekend!

Oh wait, Kearns doesn’t play for the Reds any more, does he?

Is it too much to ask for the reds to resign Dunn, sign Manny, Furcal, Pudge, and Lowe this off season?

Did Patterson seriously just hit a homer? Seriously?

    There’s Patterson’s 2-4 day again – up to .194!

This team got a lot younger on average when Ken Griffey Jr. left this week. Keep your chins up, there will be growing pains! Next year will be better, write it down!

Well, that’s true. Then again, it’s not hard to get better at this point.

Anybody read the story today in the Enquirer about how woeful the Reds defense has been since 2001? Encarnacion is rated as the worst defensive third baseman in baseball.Votto (Surprising) and Phillips are the only two above average. That won’t get it done.

  • They need some on-the-field leadership. Brandon Phillips said that he wanted to wear the captain’s ‘C’, like Barry Larkin, I say let him do it in 2009!

Brandon Phillips has been an absolute disaster since he self-proclaimed himself the leader of this team.

One for 8, a HUGE error last night, and picked off 2nd today (down 4 runs).

As far as I\’m concerned, he\’s the most overrated Red in my lifetime. Sean Casey was overpaid and overhyped, but he was at least a decent hitter.

Red, it’s interesting to note how much the Rays have improved their defense this year. I read today they went from worst to first. Not sure what the metric was, but that’s impressive, regardless.

I think defense would be a good place for the Reds to really improve. The problem is that they’ve proclaimed themselves “satisfied” at SS, where a major improvement is possible, and we’ve seen how horrific a good-fielding, no-hit CF can be, when your manager likes fast CFs at the top of the order.

Brandon Phillips…overrated? He’s a top 5 second basemen in all of MLB.

I’ve stopped watching games in their entirety. The Reds are nice enough to lose the games within the first 3 innings lately so it makes it easier to change the channel.

Brandon Phillips has an OPS+ of 100 – exactly equal to the league average.

He doesn’t hold a candle to Utley, Kinsler. Brian Roberts is better. Uggla and Pedroia are having better years. Phillips probably does rank just behind those guys, but that’s as much a factor of the miserable crop of 2bs right now, as it is of Phillips’ greatness.

I’m not saying he’s not a good, or useful pitcher. I am saying it’s insane to anoint him as the “face of the franchise,” as Marty Brennamen did Friday night. And personally, I find Phillips’ Larkinesque self-promotion to be pretty tired.

Now that we’ve plummetted to last place I wonder how Walt feels about standing pat to chase .500 instead of selling for some prospects.

The people the Reds have that they want to sell will still clear waivers so that’s not an issue. But I’m with Chris on the issue of Phillips self-proclaiming himself the face of the franchise and wanting to be captain. Being the “face” is one thing–that’s marketing, promotions and sales.

But captaincy? That honor is earned, not demanded, and comes through the respect of your teammates, not some silly fan notion or media appointment. I also find the idea ridiculous that a team needs a captain–any captain–and the world will be a better place. No, not if the clubhouse doesn’t respect you. Professional athletes are not going to bow to someone they don’t respect just because a letter is sewn on a sleeve. In fact, they’re most likely to laugh at you.

You might also be reminded that Phillips was NOT one of the players Uncle Walt considered untouchable a few weeks ago.

Chris-I agree and disagree with you about Phillips. Calling him the most overrated Red in your lifetime may be a bit of hyperbole, but he has been disappointing this year and the last two days have been a disaster (I was there today). Being the CAPTAIN is something that is EARNED and not proclaimed and I’m not sure anybody on this team has earned that mantle. Seriously, who would you say is the “captain” or the face of the franchise? Volquez, Bruce and Votto all have a chance, but need to prove it over a longer period of time. I struggle to think of anybody else.

Also, Enquirer article said the Reds could get better immediately defensively by playing Phillips at SS and picking up Mark Ellis (who will be available) to play 2nd. Also suggested moving Keppinger to 3B and EE to left (if Dunn is not resigned).

I didn’t realize that offense was the only thing you look at to rank a player. I don’t listen to the radio that much but I’ve yet to read anything where Phillips has demanded to be named Captain of the team. He has said it is a title he hopes to have placed upon him. I personally think that arguing over wether or not a player should be captain or not is stupid for us as fans. It’s what the team and the players want and choose.

I like Philipps but agree with Chris that he’s been a disaster since declaring he wants to be captain. He made some key blunders in both Saturday’s and Sunday’s losses. He ought to stop thinking about Gold Glove and All Star snubs and captaining the Reds and focus on his game, he’s good when he does.

Phill-He is campaigned for it, which is something you don’t do. Phillips is more of an “I” guy than a “team” guy.

I agree that Phillips is overrated. I still don’t understand why him playing SS is an off-limits topic. The Reds have been thru how many SS’s this year? And Phillips hasn’t even played an inning there, has he?

Some players that the Reds want to move may or may not clear waivers. It’s just that much harder to find a match with another team where all players involved are either already off the 40-man or have cleared waivers. Plus, the receiving team is only getting the player for 5-7 weeks, so they aren’t going to pay as much anyways. And, of course, the bigger issue was that Jocketty made very few calls. That the plan was to do nothing and try to win 82 games. That the only reason they made 1 trade was because the White Sox called about Griffey.

From mlb.com’s game recap after Jr’s first game in Chicago:

A media throng surrounded Griffey before the game and after. Most of the questions directed toward Guillen dealt with you-know-who as well. That’s why Guillen wanted to remind everyone that Griffey didn’t win this game solo.

“I don’t care about Junior,” Guillen said. “I just care about pitching.”

Wish the Reds would have thought that way after acquiring Jr in 2000.
