Game Thread: Reds at Nats — 2008.08.02

Great job by Junior yesterday, huh? He’s fighting for a pennant over there in the American League; meanwhile, we’re stuck here watching Josh Fogg and two of the worst teams in the National League. Not fair!!!

Watch it, listen to it, and discuss it here….

  • Jerry Hairston may be going back on the DL.

Also, at least Baker doesn’t have Patterson at the top of the order. Small victories….

I can live with Patterson to a degree if he is hitting lower in the order such as tonight.

So when did this converting Jerry Gil to a pitcher decision come all about?

    ReplyReply
  • I agree totally about Patterson.

And the Gil thing seemed to come out of nowhere. Hope it works out.

He certainly wasn’t going to make it as a hitter especially with the confidence issue. Age 26 seems a bit late to get started.

  • Maybe, but I like the fact that his arm hasn’t been abused!

  • junior, day 2:

As the heat index hit 113, Ken Griffey Jr. didn’t make it through a second full game with the White Sox.

The 38-year-old Griffey was lifted for a pinch-hitter in the sixth inning of Saturday’s game against the Royals. Kansas City had just taken an 8-3 lead with two runs in the fifth.

Dewayne Wise batted for Griffey, who had been the No. 2 hitter in the lineup.

  • Ugh, Dewayne Wise. Thanks for bringing back unpleasant memories.

    ReplyReply
  • Junior also made a great diving grab in the field today.

Why does Dewayne Wise bring back unleasant memories? He was the 25th man on the roster. What did you expect?

    ReplyReply
  • He had no business being on the roster at all. He was terrible. And I seem to recall him being hit leadoff once or twice.

He may have been Corey Patterson before it became fashionable.

  • Down 2-0 after 1. Same old, same old.

  • I like Joey Votto.

  • I like Jay Bruce too.

Finally some production from the no. 3 spot.

  • Leave it to Jim to say what we were all thinking. Two homers in two days for Bruce.

OK. Wise was brutal. I’ll give you that. What was the alternative at the time? If I remember, the Reds had some injuries and Wise was the only viable option.

SS is wide open for Gonzalez next year.

    ReplyReply
  • Oh, I don’t remember at this point. I just remember he was VERY bad in the short time he was here. That makes it an unpleasant memory.

    ReplyReply
  • Yep. Kepp is handing the position to him…which is bad because that will make 3 offensive sinkholes next year: SS, C, CF…and maybe LF, depending on what happens with Dunn.

  • Y-City Jim

…and Dusty will stick Gonzalez in the two spot. Taking bets now.

  • Where else would the SS bat?

    PATTERSON!!!

Might be my only chance to write his name in all caps.

    ReplyReply
  • Corey Patterson just did something to help the team!

Where else would the SS bat?

There must be a little known sub-rule in Dusty world that allows the SS to bat lead off but only if the 1B bats second and the CF bats seventh. All other positions must retain their spots in the batting order. I think it is on page 34 of the Dummies Guide to Dusty Baker.

I think all of us should collaborate to write a “Dummies Guide to Dusty Baker” though I think most opposing managers already have an advance copy of it.

    Griffey’s good-bye letter:

I would like to thank the Cincinnati Reds organization for allowing me to fulfill a lifelong dream of playing for my hometown team. I will always value the lasting friendships I have with the Lindner, Castellini and Williams families.

While my nine seasons there were filled with personal highlights – like hitting my 400th, 500th and 600th home runs in a Reds uniform – and the negatives of having to fight through too many injuries, my biggest regret is that we were not able to win a world championship while I was there.

I also would like to thank my many teammates, managers, coaches and Reds employees for their help and support and to acknowledge the many friendly relationships I had with most of the members of the local media. I will miss the banter.

Last, but certainly not least, I would like to thank Reds fans for their support. I really do understand that the overwhelming majority of fans wanted so badly for me to succeed. Additionally, I would like to sincerely apologize to those fans offended by my wrongful actions last Saturday night. It was an overreaction on my part to what I felt was a series of public inaccurate and unfair remarks about me.

I wish nothing but success for the Reds both on and off the field.

    Sincerely,

    Ken Griffey Jr.

What was the reason Dukes didn’t start? Was he late to the ballpark or something?

Is George pronouncing Bonifacio’s name correctly? It sounds like he is pronouncing it as Buttafuoco.

I’m certain Mr. Grande is pronouncing the players’ names correctly. He’s a professional sports announcer.

Phillis just lost the Gold Glove and the Reds likely just lost this game.

Wow Dusty has figured out that you keep your best hitters toward the top of the line up and the not-so-good (or crappy ones like Patterson) at the bottom of the line up…or maybe he’s done this by accident?

    ReplyReply
  • Regarding your Dukes question from earlier, Jim, yep, he was late to the ballpark. That guy is a walking disaster, regardless of all his talent.

Well, it’s good to see Majewski and Lincoln are back to their old selves. I’m sure everyone on the team feels great about the offensive out put wasted. I said it at the beginning of the season and I’ll say it again…”This team does not want to win.” Someone told me that athletes always want to win. Dusty Baker just plain sucks and the rest of the team has followed suit, what a waste.

The Reds have just lost two games to a team with 1 or 2 quality major league talent players, a couple of fringe players, and career minor leaguers.

Terrible, just plain terrible, Go Chi Sox.

Yep, I won’t be watching any more Reds games unless Volquez is pitching. Surely after a 2 for 4 night CP will be lead off this season and probably the next two seasons. I predict the Reds record will be 74-88 at the end of the year. Good to see Votto and Bruce hitting well…I guess that’s something to cheer for.

Hopp-In fairness Lincoln has pitched lights out for a long stretch. You can dump on a player after one bad outing. Their are plenty of guys on this team to kill, Mike Lincoln isn’t one of them.
