Game Thread: Goodbye, Ken Griffey, Jr. Edition

The first game of the post-Griffey era takes place tonight.

There has been way too much venom directed at Junior Griffey in the last couple of days. He has been a great Red; it isn’t his fault that he was surrounded by crappy rosters his entire tenure in Cincinnati. For one, I’m sad to see him go, even if I can’t argue with dealing him.

Redleg Nation remains huge fans of Griffey. We wish him the best of luck. I know I will be rooting for the White Sox to go far in the playoffs this year.

Anyway, the Reds are playing at Washington tonight. Two terrible teams, but I’ll probably be watching, if only to see Homer Bailey again. Of course, I may be flipping the television back and forth to see between this game and the White Sox/Royals contest.

Discuss either of those games right here.

  • Outterson in the lineup tonight?

No, Corey isn’t starting. Hairston is back taking Griffey’s spot on the 25 man. Gotta figure Coffey will go if they want Masset up here. Kinda interesting that the Reds now have 3 ex-Rangers pitchers and the Rangers have 2 ex-Reds pitchers(although one in the minors).

The interesting part was that they could’ve all been playing together especially Masset and Edinson in the minors.

    According to Fay-

    Jerry Hairston Jr. cf
    Jeff Keppinger ss
    Jay Bruce rf
    Brandon Phillips 2b
    Adam Dunn lf
    Edwin Encarnacion 3b
    Andy Phillips 1b
    David Ross c
    Homer Bailey p

I would prefer to have Dunn third, but we’ll see how Jay handles a bigger role I guess. When Votto plays, I would go Dunn-Votto-Bruce 3-5-7.

Right on, Chad. GO REDS !!! GO WHITE SOX !!! Welcome back, Hairston.

Take back what I said, as per John Fay, Coffey optioned to make a spot for Hairston. I guess Masset took Griffey’s spot.

Either way Coffey’s gone and we get to see what the new guy can do soon enough.

I figured Bruce would be in the 3 spot since he is the RF. If Homer Bailey was the RF, he would bat third. If he was the CF, he would bat leadoff. It is pretty obvious Baker using the following template for his line-ups: CF, SS, RF, 2B, LF, 3B, 1B, C, P. If Joe Dimaggio’s corpse was in the line-up, he would bat leadoff. Probably would be more effective than Corey Patterson as well.

    White Sox line-up tonight:

    Cabrera ss
    Pierzynski c
    Quentin lf
    Dye rf
    Thome dh
    Ramirez 2b
    Griffey cf
    Swisher 1b
    Uribe 3b

Guillen must use a different template than Baker.

    7 pitch inning for Perez.

  • Bailey strikes out the leadoff hitter.

  • Then 2 straight hits, though that last one was hit very softly.

  • Ol’ Kearnsie.

  • Kearns throws his bat on the swing. We have seen that many times.

Dukes muscled that hit between EE and JK.

Homer then uncorks a wild one to advance the runners before striking out Kearns.

  • 2-0 Nats. I quit. I’m flipping it over to watch the White Sox.

It seems odd that all these hits Bailey gave up in his last start and again tonight are singles,

Homer K’s the side in route to trailing 2-0. Makes it all the more odd.

Nats take care of the singles issue.

Washington swinging like a bunch of beer leaguers and it seems to be working quite well for them.

I’m trying to decide if I want to drive to DC (~2 hour drive) tomorrow to watch the Reds. Decisions. Decisions.

  • If it weren’t for Kearns, I don’t think Bailey could get anyone out.

  • Don’t do it, Nick. This team is a disaster.

Why does Fay come during the 2nd inning and read that day’s Reds newspaper articles? How about some frickin’ insight?

  • Two outs in the Sox game, and no one has hit a ball to CF yet.

I should be at these games (I usually live in D.C. most of the year though I’ve been in Ohio for awhile now) but tonight I’m glad that I’m not.

I wish we would do like the Nationals and jettison some of our unproductive players who don’t have a future on our team. They let go of Estrada, Lo Duca and Felipe Lopez today (yesterday? recently?)

I really don’t understand why we have Corey Patterson on our team among a few others. We could probably sign Kenny Lofton and let him be a back up outfielder and get way more production from him than from C-P

Fogg is pitching tomorrow. Does that help you with the decision?

The team may be a disaster, but (in the words of George Costanza) “I can’t quit now, I’m addicted (cough).”

If Volquez was pitching we’d probably go, but with Fogg on the mound, oh boy, that makes it even less appealing.

Wonder if Junior will take out a full page ad in the paper thanking the Reds fans for their support like C.C. Sabathia did for the Indians fans?

Most career HR, teammates? Gehrig and Ruth. That’s probably the extent of the list.

And I must ask again, why is Homer Baily in the major leagues? He really belongs at AA. A couple of lucky starts and back to his usual. With Dusty’s example of CP batting lead off for half the season I guess it should come as no surprise. Good to see Jr. helping the sox out…so long as the Yankees lose that is all that really matters.

  • Reds fans didn’t support Junior like Indians fans supported CC.

    ReplyReply
  • Yeah, DA, but how many did they have when they were on the same roster together? I thought of them, but didn’t know how many Gehrig had when Ruth left.

Thome and Junior have over 1100 homers between them.

haha yeah I doubt that Griffey would do that after how he has been treated in Cincy by many fans over the past 8-9 years.

I was just happy that he didn’t take any parting shots. He’s not really like that but after everything some people said about him or put him through, I wouldn’t blame him

Reds fans didn’t support Junior like Indians fans supported CC.

I know they didn’t so I was really just being facetious.

Also C.C. was a public relations dream in Cleveland. He shagged fly balls in the outfield on his off days. Tossed ball after ball after ball into the stands during BP.

  • Plus, that CC can pitch a little bit, too, can’t he?

  • Man, the Reds are just bad, aren’t they?

That was very….bad. The Reds should rename themselves as the Cincinnati Slumpbusters and teams should pay them to play against because any team slumping can destroy the Reds.

50: That’s 1130, so you’re already down to 9 guys who can even get you halfway there – on the last day of their career. What was the record before? Hank Aaron and Eddie Matthews? They were only around 800 when Matthews left Milwaukee. Gehrig and Ruth? They were probably over 1000 when Ruth was done. McCovey and Mays? Probably not quite there.

  • We must remember that one of the reasons why this team could not build around Griffey was his monstrous contract. They have been saddled for nine years now. So it is partially his “fault” that he was surrounded by crappy players.

It’s hard to watch the Reds right now – mediocre pitching ties them up, and good pitching shuts them down entirely. With all the free agents on the team, Jockety has a chance to imprint. Let’s hope he’s a better baseball man than we’ve had before, and that Castellini gives up the doomed strategy of winning now while trying to build for the future.

  • Y-City Jim

His “monstrous” contract. Only in the eyes of Carl Lindner, who is the real reason the club couldn’t assemble a winner.
