Game Thread: Padres at Reds — 2008.07.21
Padres come to town tonight for the first of a three-game series with the homestanding Redlegs. It’s a good opportunity for the Reds to advance toward that goal of a .500 record.
Homer Bailey will get the start, and we’ll see if he used up all his pixie dust in his last outing. If you didn’t see Bailey last time out, you may be surprised to hear that he really looked like a different pitcher. His velocity was up, his command was excellent, and he looked in control and confident the entire time.
If that Homer Bailey sticks around, the Reds are in good shape.
Discuss the game here….

July 21st, 2008 at 6:33 pm
Tonight’s starting line-up:
REDS
Jay Bruce cf
Jeff Keppinger ss
Ken Griffey Jr. rf
Brandon Phillips 2b
Adam Dunn lf
Edwin Encarnacion 3b
Joey Votto 1b
David Ross c
Homer Bailey p
July 21st, 2008 at 7:13 pm
I want nothing less than a sweep of the Padres. Take no prisoners, Homer.
July 21st, 2008 at 7:17 pm
MLB needs a genealogy link to keep track of all the Gonzalezs alone.
Footwork by Votto cost an out but that is a tough play.
July 21st, 2008 at 7:30 pm
Lot of excitement at the park tonight.
July 21st, 2008 at 7:32 pm
Phillips is becoming my favorite Red.
July 21st, 2008 at 7:37 pm
We’re not off to a very good start!
July 21st, 2008 at 7:38 pm
EDWIN IS ON FIRE!!!
July 21st, 2008 at 7:39 pm
That was nice!
July 21st, 2008 at 7:39 pm
Slider that didn’t slide.
July 21st, 2008 at 7:39 pm
i was about to say the same thing jim. i know he hasnt, but it feels like he has homered every game since the break, and all in clutch ABs. Hes not adding leads, he is bringing them closer or tying games.
July 21st, 2008 at 7:41 pm
This guy throws a boatload of crap, doesn’t he?
July 21st, 2008 at 7:41 pm
Someone look it up…when was Votto’s last homerun.
July 21st, 2008 at 7:45 pm
July 10th was Joey’s last HR.
July 21st, 2008 at 7:48 pm
That pitch went at least 40 feet. Nice.
July 21st, 2008 at 7:50 pm
Nice pitching to Giles. Good movement. He’s a tough K.
July 21st, 2008 at 7:51 pm
Homer getting a decent number of ground ball outs.
July 21st, 2008 at 7:52 pm
July 10th huh. Seems longer than that.
July 21st, 2008 at 7:54 pm
Good job Ross, good job Homer. Now let’s get ‘em home….
July 21st, 2008 at 7:55 pm
Whoa! Sound execution by the Reds.
BTW, have any of you heard that Thompson and Maloney are hurt? To what degree?
Also, Bobby Livingston starts at Louisville tonight.
July 21st, 2008 at 7:55 pm
It would be nice for Bruce AND Votto to heat up for the second half.
July 21st, 2008 at 7:56 pm
Bruce!!!!!!!!
July 21st, 2008 at 7:56 pm
tie game!
July 21st, 2008 at 7:57 pm
Sweet double by JAAAAAY BRUUUUCE!
July 21st, 2008 at 7:58 pm
Correct me if im wrong, but have the reds not been down by at least 2 every game since the break and come back to tie it up every game? Thats impressive run support, and good will to fight back
July 21st, 2008 at 7:58 pm
BRUUUUUUCEE!!!!!!!
July 21st, 2008 at 7:59 pm
That is twice that Junior has hit the ball the other way. Change is strategy?
July 21st, 2008 at 8:01 pm
I’ve noticed their tendency to come back, too.
Frankly, it’s probably the #1 reason I can’t let this team go. They ARE competitive, if nothing else.
July 21st, 2008 at 8:02 pm
Phillips is an obvious SS and Keppinger is an obvious 2B. It defies logic.
July 21st, 2008 at 8:03 pm
And I forgot that someone mentioned Bailey’s resemblance to Christian Bale.
Indeed, Homer IS Batman.
July 21st, 2008 at 8:06 pm
Kurt, you are SO correct.
July 21st, 2008 at 8:13 pm
That sucked.
July 21st, 2008 at 8:13 pm
If the Reds aren’t within 4-6 of the wild card by the end of August, why wouldn’t you experiment with the Kepp-BP switch?
And I don’t want to hear about BP being a prototypical 2B, obviously one of the best in MLB at that spot, I realize.
Instead, I want to hear about the logic behind NOT switching the two.
In short, what would be best for this team?
July 21st, 2008 at 8:23 pm
i’m just following the game online so i can’t tell about the balls that are hit, but what’s with 3 infield singles to short?
July 21st, 2008 at 8:26 pm
we were moving to better seats and missed it.
July 21st, 2008 at 8:29 pm
great job by homer there, i’m impressed.
July 21st, 2008 at 8:32 pm
The right field seats are impressive.
July 21st, 2008 at 8:35 pm
They are trying to start the wave in our new section. We should move back.
July 21st, 2008 at 8:35 pm
Nice hit by Homer.
July 21st, 2008 at 8:36 pm
Well that was embarrassing.
July 21st, 2008 at 8:37 pm
holy cow, talk about bad baserunning!
July 21st, 2008 at 8:38 pm
Phillips is an obvious SS and Keppinger is an obvious 2B. It defies logic.
It probably has as much to do with the Gonzalez dilemma as anything.
What we just had here was a demonstration of why our record is what it is. If I was Dusty Baker I would hurl myself off a cliff after something as incredibly stupid as that.
July 21st, 2008 at 8:38 pm
I can’t remember a pitcher (let alone professional hitters) pulling off the fake bunt/swing away with such aplomb.
Pretty damn cool.
But then that. Looked like my son’s little league game the other day.
July 21st, 2008 at 8:41 pm
sounds like i’m glad i didn’t see that. i have no idea how you gidp with runners at second and third, and i don’t wanna know.
July 21st, 2008 at 8:41 pm
George Grande says “Dusty is probably saying how in the heck did we do that.”
I doubt that is exactly what Dusty was thinking or saying.
Why doesn’t Fox Sports start a baseball show for kids and have George Grande host it?
July 21st, 2008 at 8:42 pm
Times like these you really doubt this is MLB.
July 21st, 2008 at 8:43 pm
I can’t remember a pitcher (let alone professional hitters) pulling off the fake bunt/swing away with such aplomb.
I’m think that Jose Rijo pulled that off a few times.
July 21st, 2008 at 8:43 pm
I don’t believe I have ever seen, at the major league level, a double play on a ground ball with runners on second and third which did not involve the hitter. Wow.
July 21st, 2008 at 8:44 pm
Brandon Phillips’ footwork is phenomenal.
July 21st, 2008 at 8:45 pm
I remember when Gerut broke in. I thought he was going to be a super star. Kinda’ missed that one.
July 21st, 2008 at 8:49 pm
A kid just played Reds make a deal. He had an autographed Dunn picture and baseball and traded it in and ended up getting 44 jumping jacks. What a douche!
July 21st, 2008 at 8:50 pm
Emergency Situation: Wife just came into the room and changed the channel to some dating mess girly program on Bravo. I have to make a choice between the TV or the computer. Someone give me an idea how I can keep both. If not, do I choose Reds, or Redlegnation?
July 21st, 2008 at 8:50 pm
Let’s get some runs, Reds. Homer Bailey has pitched a heckuva game. If he had been a smarter defender in the 1st, he might have a shutout going. If he and Ross were smarter base runners, the Reds might already have the lead.
July 21st, 2008 at 8:51 pm
Did he take it off the face?
July 21st, 2008 at 8:52 pm
You have to choose the game as much as we want you to continue to post.
Can’t you send her on an errand? Maybe she should go get some ice cream.
July 21st, 2008 at 8:52 pm
Take the TV
July 21st, 2008 at 8:53 pm
Looked like the side of the face.
JUNIOR!!!!!!
July 21st, 2008 at 8:54 pm
That kid made an awesome catch about 15 rows below us.
July 21st, 2008 at 8:54 pm
Indeed, preach, bush league all the way, though I’ll excuse Homer due to his lack of experience as a rookie (and, let’s face it, not really having a whole lot of professional baserunning experience against true major league defenders). Ross, uhhh….not so much.
And, yet again, why BP should be our SS after that solid play, which he tends to look routine.
Y-City Jim points out Gonzalez’s contract for next year as possibly being the major deterrent for continuing to defy logic as to why he should be at short.
I ask again: If they’re out of it in a few weeks, what other reasons besides AG’s contract (who we don’t even know can actually play at the MLB level again) to not put your best SS at SS?
Why not try it, at least?
JUNIOR.
July 21st, 2008 at 8:55 pm
Junior set you up for the win, Homer. Seize the moment.
July 21st, 2008 at 8:56 pm
OK, going for the television away from the computer. Hope to check in soon.
July 21st, 2008 at 8:57 pm
Dunn gave that one a ride.
July 21st, 2008 at 8:57 pm
Why not try it, at least?
Change is scary, which is why Sparky’s move of Pete Rose to 3B is likely one of the boldest and bravest moves in Reds history.
July 21st, 2008 at 8:59 pm
Preach should have poured her a few glasses of communion wine to help her doze off.
July 21st, 2008 at 8:59 pm
gamecast has dunn’s lineout landing in the 3rd row.
July 21st, 2008 at 9:01 pm
Preach, just do what I do: Slip her a valium and a glass of wine.
She’ll only hate you in the morning.
July 21st, 2008 at 9:02 pm
So did Gameday.
July 21st, 2008 at 9:03 pm
Saw that, too, al.
July 21st, 2008 at 9:07 pm
She’ll only hate you in the morning.
You’re bad, Steve. I want you on my side.
July 21st, 2008 at 9:07 pm
I wonder if there’s a worse name for a pitcher than Homer.
July 21st, 2008 at 9:09 pm
maybe “Walker”?
July 21st, 2008 at 9:09 pm
Once Homer can slow that change-up down a little bit more so as to increase the difference between it and his fastball, he will be the Homer we have impatiently waited for.
July 21st, 2008 at 9:11 pm
I wonder if there’s a worse name for a pitcher than Homer.
Dick Pole
July 21st, 2008 at 9:14 pm
2 quality starts by homer in a row. for the last 5 years we have BEGGED for younger and better pitching. id say its here. am the only one giddy about next season?
July 21st, 2008 at 9:14 pm
Yeah, well unfortunately the wife rules as of the moment. I absolutely MUST go to the neighbors’ for a “social call” down the street, whatever.
The condition, however, is that I get to take my transistor with me.
It’s okay, though, she’ll be calling it a night by the 8th…
And why in the heck did I say that about Homer’s name……?
July 21st, 2008 at 9:15 pm
Homer got a standing ovation.
July 21st, 2008 at 9:17 pm
There are some hot ass chicks at this ballpark.
July 21st, 2008 at 9:23 pm
Fogg for Bray?
July 21st, 2008 at 9:24 pm
Nice move Dusty
July 21st, 2008 at 9:25 pm
There are some hot ass chicks at this ballpark.
Behave!
July 21st, 2008 at 9:26 pm
Just got home, guys. Was Homer the same Homer that we saw last time (re: velocity and command)?
July 21st, 2008 at 9:27 pm
Fogg for Bray?
This team’s bench is pitiful.
July 21st, 2008 at 9:30 pm
If Homer hadn’t had the brain fart of not covering 1B in the first inning, he might still be pitching and look at a possible complete game. Very impressive performance!
The future so bright we gotta wear shades!!!
July 21st, 2008 at 9:31 pm
Glad to hear that, Jim.
Looks like the bad Weathers might be in, as the first two reach. Hope he doesn’t spoil another win for Homer.
July 21st, 2008 at 9:32 pm
The umpire almost knocked Votto down as he was retreating on that fly ball. Fortunately, Junior was there.
Two outs. Still holding my breath.
July 21st, 2008 at 9:32 pm
Weathers scares me
July 21st, 2008 at 9:32 pm
Maybe Weathers’ nickname should be “Jam.” He sure seems to get into them.
July 21st, 2008 at 9:35 pm
That was a good catch by Whiffey but the throw was unnecessary.
July 21st, 2008 at 9:35 pm
“Stormy” Weathers
July 21st, 2008 at 9:37 pm
Is it just me, or is the strike zone getting wider and wider as the summer rolls on?
July 21st, 2008 at 9:37 pm
I like this for next year.
Harang (hopefully healthy)
Volquez
Cueto
Bailey
Thompson/Arroyo
We FINALLY have pitching!
July 21st, 2008 at 9:38 pm
That was a good catch by Whiffey but the throw was unnecessary.
The bravado of a MLB player.
July 21st, 2008 at 9:39 pm
Is it just me, or is the strike zone getting wider and wider as the summer rolls on?
It sure wasn’t yesterday in Edinson Volquez’s opinion.
July 21st, 2008 at 9:41 pm
Nail it down for Homer Bailey.
July 21st, 2008 at 9:41 pm
18,177
July 21st, 2008 at 9:41 pm
Good CoCo or bad CoCo?
July 21st, 2008 at 9:42 pm
Outterson is in.
July 21st, 2008 at 9:43 pm
What’s the over/under on number of baserunners this inning. I say 3.
July 21st, 2008 at 9:43 pm
18,177
Wish I lived outside of the NY area (where yankee games are sold out and cost 3x face value or more for tickets) so I could get out to more games.
July 21st, 2008 at 9:44 pm
Attendance is only 18,177? That’s terrible, even for a Monday night.
July 21st, 2008 at 9:44 pm
I’m betting under, 2.
July 21st, 2008 at 9:46 pm
It is pretty empty.
July 21st, 2008 at 9:46 pm
Not to belabor the point, and I’m glad Cordero struck out the leader hitter, but on what universe is that a called strike?
July 21st, 2008 at 9:47 pm
There is number 1
July 21st, 2008 at 9:47 pm
Attendance is only 18,177? That’s terrible, even for a Monday night.
Remember it is the Reds, and they are playing the Padres.
Coco better not blow this.
July 21st, 2008 at 9:48 pm
Oh God…the wave
July 21st, 2008 at 9:48 pm
Gotta get the 2 and 3 batters out or work a double-play ball. Adrian Gonzalez is too dood in the clutch
July 21st, 2008 at 9:49 pm
Dammit
July 21st, 2008 at 9:50 pm
They’re doing the wave with the go-ahead run at the plate in the 9th inning and our closer in? Embarrassing.
July 21st, 2008 at 9:50 pm
The wave sucks in a one third filled ball park.
July 21st, 2008 at 9:50 pm
Coco is trying to blow another one tonight.
July 21st, 2008 at 9:50 pm
I am beginning to really dislike Francisco Cordero.
July 21st, 2008 at 9:52 pm
Please strike out Giles, Coco.
July 21st, 2008 at 9:52 pm
Who else could they put in at this point?
July 21st, 2008 at 9:53 pm
What just happened?
July 21st, 2008 at 9:53 pm
Homer, you have my permission to punch Cordero in the mouth.
July 21st, 2008 at 9:54 pm
Shenanigans
July 21st, 2008 at 9:55 pm
Cordero blows another save this guy sucks
July 21st, 2008 at 9:57 pm
SHIT
July 21st, 2008 at 9:58 pm
Absolutely ridiculous!!!
If over half the pitches you throw are out of the strike zone then this is what happens!!!
July 21st, 2008 at 9:59 pm
People are leaving like the place is on fire.
July 21st, 2008 at 9:59 pm
Typical Reds beat good teams lose to the worse teams in MLB
July 21st, 2008 at 9:59 pm
Un-gd-believable.
July 21st, 2008 at 9:59 pm
Is anyone warming up?
July 21st, 2008 at 10:00 pm
Well, I can’t blame Dusty for this one huh? $46 mil and can’t find the strike zone vs. Padres. This team is sad.
July 21st, 2008 at 10:00 pm
Two straight good outings by Homer ruined by the bullpen. And Coco’s act is getting VERY old. He’s been terrible recently.
I’m disgusted.
July 21st, 2008 at 10:00 pm
BOOOOOO!
July 21st, 2008 at 10:01 pm
People are leaving like the place is on fire.
Actually that’s a pretty funny line.
July 21st, 2008 at 10:02 pm
This team should be looking at a 5-0 start from the All-Star Game and Cordero is the chief reason why they are not.
July 21st, 2008 at 10:04 pm
Majewski, you’re the new closer. You did in two pitches what Cordero couldn’t do in 40 - get us out of the inning.
Pull off a miracle, offense.
July 21st, 2008 at 10:05 pm
Here’s hoping Cordero is sitting in the dugout so he can watch what a real closer looks like.
July 21st, 2008 at 10:08 pm
Cordero just another over paid Reds pitcher. At least football season starts in 40 days.
July 21st, 2008 at 10:09 pm
He must have had too many margaritas over the break.
July 21st, 2008 at 10:09 pm
I’m going to shit my pants if Votto hits one out.
July 21st, 2008 at 10:14 pm
You knew that was going to happen.
July 21st, 2008 at 10:14 pm
When umps call strikes six inches off the plate, it becomes a whole different type of game, doesn’t it?
July 21st, 2008 at 10:18 pm
I quit.
July 21st, 2008 at 10:19 pm
That was disappointing.
July 21st, 2008 at 10:19 pm
Shouldn’t have come down to the bottom of the 9th.
Keep your head up, Homer. You pitched a whale of a ball game.
July 21st, 2008 at 10:21 pm
In the next two days, Cordero will go on the DL with some phantom injury. Bet the ranch on it.
July 21st, 2008 at 10:21 pm
Just when I think this team can’t disappoint me more they prove me wrong.
July 21st, 2008 at 10:21 pm
I need to stop watching this team. I hate losing.
July 21st, 2008 at 10:24 pm
Its going to be hard to talk the fam into coming back tomorrow after that.
July 21st, 2008 at 10:26 pm
In the next two days, Cordero will go on the DL with some phantom injury. Bet the ranch on it.
I diagnose it as a brain disorder that inhibits one from finding home plate.
One step forward, two steps back (as opposed to two steps forward, one step back).
July 21st, 2008 at 10:27 pm
Its going to be hard to talk the fam into coming back tomorrow after that.
I hope they finally win one for you.
July 21st, 2008 at 10:34 pm
In the next two days, Cordero will go on the DL with some phantom injury. Bet the ranch on it.
Inflammation of his ERA, perhaps?
July 21st, 2008 at 11:07 pm
Grande and Welch talking about how Cordero keeps the ball away from the hitter. Great, so he walks hitters in the 9th. inning to set up the blown save. If you’re the closer how about just throwing it over the plate at 94 mph. and get it over with! Ridiculous!
July 21st, 2008 at 11:12 pm
Our hotel is on the seventh floor. I told the ladies I could beat them using the steps. I won, but I think I am going to die.
July 22nd, 2008 at 12:13 am
Kurt, we all feel your pain.
I completely made an ass of myself in front of my “social call” down the street earlier tonight and looked like a self-obsessed, pathetically delusional Reds fan (not unlike many of us who follow this continual tease of a major league franchise)….AND my wife now hates me even more for my Reds obsession. Just great. Thanks, Mr. $14K.
If they don’t win 2 out of 3 on this one, even I - a true glutton for punishment - might give up after this series simply for the sake of my marriage.
Yeah, and monkeys might fly out of my butt.
July 22nd, 2008 at 6:04 am
I read that in post game that Cordero thought he was getting squeezed on calls. While he might have a point on the one pitch to Giles I otherwise think he needs to get a closer’s mentality and pound the strike zone.
July 22nd, 2008 at 8:43 am
Six blown saves for Cordero, only one with more is Izzy in St. Louis with seven and he lost his job to Ryan Franklin(!). Bases loaded, nobody out and can’t get even one run in. If that doesn’t sum up the last five years I don’t know what does.
