Game Thread: Metropolitans at Reds — 2008.08.17

Okay, time to start the second half. Anyone excited?

Johnny Cueto will try to get the Reds off on the right foot; Cueto’s been fairly effective lately, so we can hope that continues. On the mound for the Mets is some guy named Johan Santana. Never heard of him.

The Hunt for a Reds October begins today (or have we already given up the chase?). Discuss it here….

Bobby Livingston reinstated and optioned to AA-Chattanooga.

    Sexton signs with the Yankees.

Dusty, put Keppinger in the one spot and Dunn in the two spot and move Bruce down in the order.

Reds – maximum intensity tonight and DESTROY Santana and the Mets!!!

I like seeing Jerry Hairston sitting in the dugout tonight. Even though he can’t play it shows camaraderie.

    Superb start by Johnny Cueto!!!

Sexson signs with the Yankees? Obviously that’s an organization that doesn’t know anything about baseball or winning.

Where do you want this dumpster full of sarcasm?

With the money the Yankees have coming in, they can make stupid decisions and not worry.

Sexson was batting .344 with five home runs in 61 at bats against lefthanders and was available for a waiver claim. Don’t the Reds REALLY, REALLY SUCK against lefthanders?

Additional research … Votto batting .292 with six homers in 106 at bats againsy lefties … forget Sexson.

Team Cycle in this inning … walk, single, double, triple, HR, HR.

Wow, give me some extra hot sauce with that.

Ninety pitches in four innings, well done.

this is insane…maybe Dusty jabbering about Basketball and leaving the Baseball stuff to the players is what they needed.

Also, did anyone notice that when EdE hit his homer the Marquis said ¨Home Run – Baker (1)¨ I just watched the replay on gameday.

Dusty Baker makes the pitching change at least 1 batter too late again.

If the Reds score five runs against Santana then Johnny Cueto needs to hang his head for blowing it.

Hopper moved to the 60-day DL.

Money wasn’t an issue with Sexson. He cost $200,000 to sign for the rest of the year. My guess is he chose the Yankees rather than the Yankees chose him, but it still looks like the Reds aren’t trying to find the pieces.

Can you imagine if they had ever tried a shift on Rod Carew? That guy could control where he hit virtually every ball.

Sexson would certainly be better than any other RH bat the Reds have on their bench.

For Jocketty to be able to pull off those “rejuvenated” veteran player signings like he did in St. Louis, he and Dusty are going to have to find a better coaching staff than they currently have in place. Brooke Jacoby isn’t going to rejuvenate any hitter. I becoming a little more of a believer in Dick Pole though.

I like what I seeing from this club tonight. The key is for them to be this “on” every game.

Isn’t that the same error Brandon Phillips made on Sunday?

    Great job by Weathers.

Helped by a VERY wide strike zone though. Very wide, and somewhat inconsistent.

Ya know, after the third run Dusty would’ve been out there to pull CoCo. He obviously didn’t have it but I guess with the Reds and Billy Wagner one run or two runs doesn’t mean nothing.

Of all nights for Cordero to blow it. This team fought so hard to be in a position to win this game. This was a game he had to close the opposition down.

  • Watched the game, but couldn’t comment during it. Just a point or two: Why didn’t someone, anyone, go to the mound when it was CLEAR Cueto was being bothered by the sun. Even Mr. Positive George Grande made the remark that all he needed was for someone to buy him a minute or two. I was screaming at the TV while it was happening, so this is not just a hindsight comment.

I don’t know how Weathers ever gets anyone out, but he does. Good job again tonight.

I hope someone tells Votto that it is important to come off the bag sometimes and get in front of a ball. That ole’ garbage rarely works.

You can tell that Cordero has pitched a lot lately. He desparately needs to be on the bench a couple of days.

Affeldt’s curve ball is one of the filthiest pitches I have ever seen; when he’s on. Lincoln’s is pretty awesome as well.

Junior had a couple of uncomfortable fielding moments, but he made one heck of an attempt in the ninth. He was airborne for quite some time.

Wagner throws consistently hard, especially for being 37.

Ross should have had four walks tonight. That called third strike was a ball every other time it was thrown. I will take that from our number 8 guy. I also liked the bunt idea in the ninth. He really is quite good at it.

Hey, we still ran Santana out of the game after four innings. We should have eaten up the middle relief however.

Preach-Cordero just had three days off, who the hell did you want closing the game?

Considering the timing of desperately needing to be hot coming out of the break coupled with the fact that they whupped up on one of the greatest pitchers alive and STILL lost, this one damn near made me cry.

Seriously, I’m too old to invest this much emotion into a meaningless game. I hate the Reds.

But I’m completely hopeless because…. I LOVE ‘EM! LET’S GET THE NEXT 3!

preach, I assume that Cordero was off maybe because of the extra rest not needing more.
