Ummm…what?

What? They picked this guy to make the All-Star team instead of Brandon Phillips?

Funny thing is, either he or Utley will win the gold glove because of their bats. The allstar game & the post season awards has become a joke with the way the voting is done anymore.

Yeah, tough night all around for him.

I actually stayed up and watched the whole thing, and it was so bad that I kept thinking for the last hour of the game, “Don’t hit it to Uggla, don’t hit it to Uggla…”

And his line actually doesn’t show how bad he looked since he misplayed another one hit right at him but managed to knock it down and make a routine chance into an out.

Tell me if I have this right: Phillips was only the second 2B and third infielder overall to go 30/30, correct?

    That’s not an all-star?

That was one of the more pathetic things I’ve ever seen. I wanted to feel bad for him, but geez that was frustrating.

Indeed, John. Not to mention that BP would likely have easily handled all of Uggla’s misplays in the field.

The most perplexing thing to me is that we can complain about BP’s lack of recognition due to the Reds’ relatively small market and all, but last I checked, Uggla plays in an even smaller one. So that theory really doesn’t hold up here.

Just a shame for BP, and unfortunately, he’ll probably have to go 30/30 again before he really starts to get noticed.

well in Uggla’s defense, he’s not a *bad* defensive 2b. Yes Phillips is better, but Uggla is also having a better year at the plate. That said, I still think Brandon Phillips should have made it. They were hamstrung by having to get players from every team. I would have liked to see him on the Final Vote ballot though.

As for Gold Gloves, I don’t think any serious baseball analyst uses them to judge fielding at all anymore. They’re a joke. I still feel like Phillips should win one this year, but then again, I’ve been primarily watching Red’s games so I have no idea how other 2b are doing.

In the end, Phillips needs to keep doing what he’s doing and he’ll get recognized. He’s easily the third best 2b in the N.L. and overall probably top 5 (Kinsler and Roberts are ahead of him in my opinion as well, but Pedroia is behind him)

I feel bad for the guy (Uggla) because he really isn’t that bad. It must have gotten in his head. Hopefully he isn’t another Atlee Hammacker who’s career goes in the toilet after a bad All Star performance.

For BPs case, I think we really need to blame our local voters, and the standings for the Phillips snub. If Brandon even gets into the top three in voting and the Reds and Marlins had reversed their positions in the standings throughout (1.5 games behind instead of 11.5), BP would have been in there.

Also those two extra teams in the National League really hurt in making out the rosters. There are two extra guys in th NL that have to be on the roster instead of deserve to be. I think it also hurts competitively. Look at the long run of NL poor showings and you can look at Milwaukee coming from AL to NL.

Phillips bat so far has been worth 1 run above average. Uggla’s has been worth 25! Even more than Utley.

Uggla gives some of that back with his glove, but nowhere near enough to make up the difference.

Yeah, Uggla is a no brainer over Phillips (and I love Phillips) despite the performance last night.

the only disagreement I have with you here is the word “become”. It’s always been a joke.

oh and in general I think Utley is a very good defender and Uggla is not a good defender.

Phillips and Utley’s defense I think are close.

and the best defensive 2B in the NL is Iguchi.

    Re: 30/30
Not that 30/30 is a good gauge of a players productions but here are some 30/30 numbers

The only other 2B other than Phillips to go 30/30 is Soriano who did it 3 times. Not sure if the formatting is going to come through here but here are the 2B and IF who have had 30/30 in order of OPS+

    OPS+ SB HR name
    129 41 39 Soriano 2002
    126 35 38 Soriano 2003
    109 30 36 Soriano 2005
    105 32 30 Phillips 2007

    OPS+ SB HR name Year
    169 41 36 H Johnson 1989
    154 36 33 Larkin 1996
    150 34 30 D Wright 2007
    146 38 31 T Harper 1970
    145 30 38 H Johnson 1991
    136 46 42 Arod 1998
    133 32 36 H Johnson 1987
    129 41 39 Soriano 2002
    126 35 38 Soriano 2003
    118 41 30 J Rollins 2007
    109 30 36 Soriano 2005
    105 32 30 Phillips 2007

I stand corrected re: “third infielder overall.” Oops.

But I really think people are underrating Phillips here. I’ve criticized him a lot for the GIDP and lack of plate discipline, but you don’t find many 2B like him. Most of the time you have to settle for Todd Walker.

You must be a young’n … back when Ozzie Smith was around and swinging tooth picks to the tune of a .240 average, he was winning gold gloves annually. There was a time when writers actually paid attention to how well a fielder performed at his position.
