Statistical Analysis

John Erardi has another must-read article in today’s Enquirer about the Reds and statistical analysis. Great stuff.

Man, I wish Erardi hadn’t brought up the BRM. That just screws up his whole argument.

Sac bunting anyone but the 8 or 9 hitter is just stupid. You sac bunt when you have guys who are basically automatic outs anyway — so pitchers and Corey Patterson, basically.

That is, unless you’ve got some psychic strategy to make, say, Adam Dunn bunt for the first couple of pitches before you let him hit a bomb. Dusty knows all.

These articles have some good stuff in them, but I think Eradi would win more converts if he dialed down the condescension a little. This one was especially bad with the “I’ll simplify everything so you pea-brained morons won’t be confused by my brilliant analysis” tone. I love the fact that sabermetrics has opened the doors on new ways of evaluating the game, but sometimes I think part of the backlash has just as much to do with the arrogance and superiorty-complex of its defenders.
