Game Thread: Pirates at Reds — 2008.06.30

11-16 in June. Not good. But the Redlegs won on my birthday yesterday, so that’s some consolation, I suppose.

Aaron Harang vs. Pat Maholm tonight at Great American Ballpark. It’s time for the Reds to start beating up on the Pirates and Nationals of the world. If they can’t do that, the chances for a .500 season are even worse than I thought.

Discuss it here….

    Danger, danger . . . left-handed starter approaching . . .

With the team they have, that is probably the best line-up the Reds can run out there. I don’t BP in the 4 hole, but I don’t know what else to do. I do like the R/L/R/L thing.

Yet another lead off hit, can this team score?

It’s funny how Hairston and Keppinger are our best players, I have a feeling the are the least known players on the team. Home run Hairston!

    Hairston brings the lumber!

The way the Reds are swinging (impatiently), Maholm could pitch a complete game tonight and wake up tomorrow ready to go again. Just 44 pitches through 4, and that’s after Edwin finally made him work a little and walked.

Patience seems to be a the root of the Reds inconsistency issues. Some games they seem to be patient and in others they are not. Of course, personnel changing has an effect on that. Heaven forbid that Dusty might consider preaching patience and playing those kind of players.

Malholm doesn’t issue a lot of walks but he does give up hits. Just be patient, Reds. Pick out the right pitch and nail it.

    Funny thought for the day:

What if in the TV show and movie “The Fugitive” the main character had been Hank Kimble (of Green Acres) rather than Dr. Richard Kimble?

I brain often comes up with random odd thoughts.

And Harang still can’t get his act together. He just cannot put the ball where it needs to be.

Good to hear that Dunn is finished using maple bats. He says nothing but ash from now on.

I’d like to see Bruce snap out of it right here.

    ReplyReply
  • Y-City Jim

I can live with that. RBI for Bruce. Let’s keep the inning going.

    ReplyReply
  • slattspub

I’ll take that. Maholm looking a little wild let’s take advantage.

  • Y-City Jim

I said it yesterday. I’ll say it today. a 3-run job would be sweet.

Maholm likes that curve in the dirt, doesn’t he?

    ReplyReply
  • Y-City Jim

OK. Reds let up together a substantial scoring inning.

Time to bring in Maj right? Or maybe Lincoln? or Weathers?

    ReplyReply
  • DevilsAdvocate

Nothing. And thusly, the best Harang can hope for is a no-decision out of this quality outing.

    Scary thought time.

Is there ever a danger that George Grande may go in the Reds Hall of Fame?

Ross a disappointment tonight. Career-wise he own Maholm.

Despite what Welsh says, LH hitters have hit Marte pretty good this year. Better than RH hitters.

This year LH hitters are batting .261 this year off of Marte.

WOW, that was a good move by Dusty Baker with his man-love!! He used him appropriately, I can not believe it.

Why is Votto bunting? He looks like he has never done it/

That bunt stuff basically took the bat out of JV’s hands.

    Be the man, EE.

Shut up about the little ball crap, George.

    ReplyReply
  • ScottAnnapolis

Bunt is the right play. You expect a major league hitter to be able to get the bunt down. The little things are why this team stinks. See the first inning.

    ReplyReply
  • ScottAnnapolis

Jim-He is right (and I don’t like Grande). The good teams do the little things and the bad teams don’t. The margin between being in the race and out of the race is not that large, teams that can move runners over or get runners in from third with less than two outs are the teams that win.

PHing for JB, who is 1 for 1 with an RBI career wise against Marte.

Eighth inning was almost as pathetic as the first. Those two innings are a perfect example of what is wrong with this team. Without the long ball, this team can’t score.

Hopp-What did Dusty do? I am no fan, but he played that inning the way he should have. The players have to come through once in awhile. I sure as hell am glad that you or Y CITY Jim isn’t the mananger.

    No, it doesn’t. My bad.

It sure would be sweet to go into Chicago next Tuesday (July 8) at 45-45. It would be even sweeter to leave Milwaukee on Sunday (July 13) at 51-45.

What a sweet ending ! I turned off my car radio (after getting home) in the top of the 9th, with runners on 2nd and 3rd and one out. Was fantasizing about a Junior home run to win it 4-3. Just missed seeing it live.

I’m not usually a Dusty basher because he’s a much better manager than I am, but in the 8th I didn’t like Votto bunting for a second strike and I certainly didn’t like JV pinch hitting for JB. Javy is not a good right handed hitter, Marte is tougher against righties this year, etc.

    ReplyReply
  • AnnapolisRed

Javy was 4-5 against Marte. You have to be able to get a bunt down. Asking Votto to bunt is not outlandish.

    ReplyReply
  • Glenn

Personally, I’d have liked to see Votto hit away. However, I also don’t think its out of line for a manager to expect that a major league player would have the capability to lay down a bunt.

I understand his thinking. Baker was trying to stay out of an inning killing double play. It makes more sense now that I know that Valentin had such a good track record against Marte. Baker was playing to tie the game.

Griffey’s heroics last night saves Dusty from a load of criticism today.
