Game Thread: Reds at Yankees — 2008.06.20
I’m posting this from my BlackBerry en route to Yankee Stadium. I haven’t seen the lineup yet, but if Corey Patterson is leading off, I am going to buy a Yankees cap.
Okay, maybe not, but I won’t be happy if Dusty ruins my only opportunity to watch the Reds at The House That Ruth Built.
Otherwise, I’m looking forward to tonight’s game, especially since Edinson Volquez is pitching. It is only the second time I’ve seen the Reds play on the road (Well, it is probably the 5th or 6th such game I’ve seen; I saw them in Philly a few times, at old Veterans Stadium).
The last couple of weeks have been pretty disastrous. Now is as good a time as any to turn that around.
Discuss it here.
Chad sent in this photo from Yankee Stadium - very cool. The Yankees are easy to hate, but the mystique is still very, very cool.

Tonight’s line-up, which means the DH rule allows us to add Patterson’s bat. Heaven forbid we would activate Keppinger and had him DH. That might put the best offensive team on the field. Oh yeah. We still have Bako’s sorry bat in the line-up.
Bruce RF
Cabrera SS
Griffey DH
Phillips 2B
Dunn LF
Votto iB
Encarnacion 3B
Patterson CF
Bako C

Hitler pretty much sums it up for all of us.
Hitler discusses the Cincinnati Reds
Pretty funny stuff.

Hitler-Reds Part 2
June 20th, 2008 at 6:40 pm
To be fair we don’t exactly have a hitting catcher and Bako has caught pretty much all of Volquez’s games.
I’m hoping(not exactly the right word) that the reason Hopper isn’t playing is from fatigue or sore legs or something that makes sense. More so than Patterson is 2-8 against Mussina.
I wish I could just send a letter to Dusty to seriously commend him on his loyalty to Corey but still question how he could feel he’s giving this team a chance when he’s got a slumping rookie leading off and a centerfielder that we know can lead off sitting the bench for a guy who can’t hit the broad side of a barn.
June 20th, 2008 at 6:45 pm
VERY funny!
That was worth the price of admission right there!
When Der Fuehrer says, “We ist der Better Team”
We HEIL! HEIL! Right in Der Fuehrer’s face
June 20th, 2008 at 6:48 pm
I loved the JTM reference. Priceless. The guy has to make some more of those. Maybe one referencing Ricciardi.
June 20th, 2008 at 6:50 pm
This is spooky. Pregame played the Lou Gehrig speech and Junior has a mystery ailment.
June 20th, 2008 at 7:00 pm
Let the Yankee hating commence.
June 20th, 2008 at 7:03 pm
So Chad, are you wearing the Reds gear?
June 20th, 2008 at 7:09 pm
Damon wasn’t real steady on that fly ball by JB.
June 20th, 2008 at 7:11 pm
There is no end to the depths of stupidity of this team.
June 20th, 2008 at 7:12 pm
I immediately pounded my fist into the desk when I saw that the sorry a$$ manager of the Reds has that fool in the line up. Words can not express the anger that it causes me to see such an idiot running this team!!!!!!!!!!!
June 20th, 2008 at 7:14 pm
Idea for new Reds gear - Cincinnati Reds dunce hat - just like the one Dusty should be wearing.
June 20th, 2008 at 7:17 pm
Jeter looked safe.
June 20th, 2008 at 7:19 pm
Mussina only threw four pitches in the 1st inning.
June 20th, 2008 at 7:21 pm
Very Mussina-friendly umpiring so far tonight.
June 20th, 2008 at 7:22 pm
BS
June 20th, 2008 at 7:23 pm
VOTTO!!!!!
TAKE THAT, BAMBINO!!!
June 20th, 2008 at 7:26 pm
I didn’t see any Reds hats in the stands where that ball landed.
June 20th, 2008 at 7:26 pm
Wow, a run! Maybe, just maybe, the Reds can score 8 or 10 runs today for Edinson and finally show some sort of offensive spark.
June 20th, 2008 at 7:28 pm
I’ll be wearing my Reds hat to the Sunday game…I’m hoping I’ll be able to watch the final game of a Reds sweep of the Yanks.
June 20th, 2008 at 7:29 pm
Nice job, Bako. Giving me another reason to not want you in the line-up.
June 20th, 2008 at 7:34 pm
I wish those aliens from the movie Cocoon would come to Earth and let Junior swim around in that swimming pool. Let Johnny Bench jump in the pool as well. I wish the ones from X-Files would show up and abduct Corey Patterson and Dusty Baker.
June 20th, 2008 at 7:35 pm
Bako is being lazy behind the plate.
June 20th, 2008 at 7:36 pm
Nice defensive work by Joey V.
June 20th, 2008 at 7:38 pm
Votto looking like the games MVP
June 20th, 2008 at 7:44 pm
I am at the game and my entire section is reds fans really a cool thing to see.
June 20th, 2008 at 7:44 pm
Cabrerra a two hit night so far.
June 20th, 2008 at 7:49 pm
The Yankees play with passion.
I just had to say that.
June 20th, 2008 at 7:49 pm
Sounds like Redlegnation is well represented at tonights game. You guys should have all gotten together for a beer before the game!
June 20th, 2008 at 7:50 pm
What does everyone think of Darryl Thompson making his debut at Yankee stadium?
June 20th, 2008 at 7:52 pm
I think it was a mistake not to have him come to the ball park tonight in order to get acclimated.
June 20th, 2008 at 7:55 pm
Come on, EV. Don’t let these creeps score.
June 20th, 2008 at 7:56 pm
Another reason to hate the Yankees.
June 20th, 2008 at 7:57 pm
The next best thing to a Reds win is a Yankees loss so if the Reds win it’s a double bonus! I agree Jim, D.T. is only 22 and going to make his MLB debut in Yankee stadium? Whew, scary.
June 20th, 2008 at 7:58 pm
Is that 2 throw outs by Bako?
June 20th, 2008 at 7:59 pm
Thanks for the call. That looked well low.
June 20th, 2008 at 8:02 pm
Bako has a chance when they go on the fastball. The one they stole was on a change-up. While that is two runners thrown out, the first was a bad throw that Cabrerra made a nice play on. It looked like the runner was safe but the ump called him out. Maybe he hates the Yankees, too.
Phillips fly out that George Grande makes it sound like is going out.
June 20th, 2008 at 8:05 pm
Opportunity knocks. Please answer.
June 20th, 2008 at 8:07 pm
Someone pulls a “Votto” when Votto is hitting!
June 20th, 2008 at 8:07 pm
My Lord. Just fire Dusty and the entire staff.
June 20th, 2008 at 8:08 pm
looks like another Helen Keller, nothing to hear.
June 20th, 2008 at 8:09 pm
oh no Votto just lost style points on that play
June 20th, 2008 at 8:10 pm
How about the announcers talking about Jeter being the most over rated player and A. Rod up there too?
June 20th, 2008 at 8:14 pm
How about VolK’s? Should we give Dick Pole any credit for his improvement?
June 20th, 2008 at 8:18 pm
By my count, first thirteen batters, Mussina 10 first pitch strikes, EV 5 first pitch strikes.
Is EV like the pitcher in Bull Durham, wild enough to be a little scary?
June 20th, 2008 at 8:20 pm
Looks like 2+ more weeks with Sorrey P.
June 20th, 2008 at 8:23 pm
Yet another clutch SS!!
June 20th, 2008 at 8:24 pm
Ton of Reds fans here, by the way. The Bruuuuce chant has been loud.
June 20th, 2008 at 8:24 pm
Maybe you should have pitched to JB!
Well done Jolbert!
June 20th, 2008 at 8:24 pm
Go Reds, I hate the Yankees!!!!!!!!!!!! :
June 20th, 2008 at 8:24 pm
Cabby is 3 for 3 tonight with some RBi’s to go along with it
June 20th, 2008 at 8:25 pm
That’s a GREAT slide by Cabrera, for what it’s worth.
June 20th, 2008 at 8:26 pm
I’m not wearing the Reds gear, but I regret it. Lot of red in the stands. I’m very surprised.
June 20th, 2008 at 8:27 pm
Nice slide by cabby, he is in the running for MVP of the game
June 20th, 2008 at 8:32 pm
Nice defense.
Marty: “This, is Jolbert Cabrera Night here at Yankee Stadium.”
June 20th, 2008 at 8:34 pm
Nice play in the field by Cabrera. Does he have some sort of vandetta against the Yankees, he’s been playing better today than I’ve ever seen him play!
June 20th, 2008 at 8:54 pm
Who had Cabrera 4-4 in the office pool tonight? (That’s what I thought).
June 20th, 2008 at 9:01 pm
Man. SS is cursed.
June 20th, 2008 at 9:02 pm
And another shortstop bites the dust. Let’s put Patterson there tomorrow.
June 20th, 2008 at 9:03 pm
Hilarious!
June 20th, 2008 at 9:21 pm
Ha ha - showed Melky one fastball, and all the rest changeups to confound him. Swing and a miss, strike 3.
June 20th, 2008 at 9:21 pm
103 pitches … Does EV go again or Burton/Cordero to finish?
June 20th, 2008 at 9:23 pm
Incidentally, that one fastball to Cabrera - the second-to-last pitch of Voltron’s outing, possibly - was the fastest speed he’s registered all night. 97mph.
June 20th, 2008 at 9:29 pm
According to the Yank’s announcers “the one knock on Corey Patterson is that he stands too far from the plate”
June 20th, 2008 at 9:30 pm
Re 65: I thought the “one knock” against Patterson was that he was lousy. That’s what I expected them to say.
June 20th, 2008 at 9:32 pm
The “one knock” against him is that he is in the line up, or that is rather a “knock” against the one who put him in there.
June 20th, 2008 at 9:33 pm
Let’s be one bad a** dude, Burton. NO more long shots like that out to RCF.
June 20th, 2008 at 9:34 pm
A few maple trees dying tonight.
June 20th, 2008 at 9:35 pm
What announcers were saying Jeter and A-Rod were overrated?
June 20th, 2008 at 9:37 pm
I think JB is good initials to have…Jared Burton & Jay Bruuuuuce
June 20th, 2008 at 9:37 pm
So Dusty thinks CP is a better CF than Hopper I take it.
June 20th, 2008 at 9:39 pm
That ‘overrated’ thing was a recent Sports Illustrated fan poll or something, I think.
June 20th, 2008 at 9:41 pm
I’d take their overrate butts in the Reds line-up any day.
June 20th, 2008 at 9:43 pm
Make it non-eventful, FC.
June 20th, 2008 at 9:44 pm
Mr. Potato Head at the game with his Reds cap.
June 20th, 2008 at 9:49 pm
Dusty thinks Corey Outterson is better at everything, and I mean everything!
June 20th, 2008 at 9:51 pm
Who was injured? Did Janish get injured on the 4-3 groundout?
June 20th, 2008 at 9:51 pm
Phillips with a couple of good plays, and “Volquez likes it” as the Yankee announcers say.
June 20th, 2008 at 9:52 pm
Jim, what is the history of Ben Jukich?
June 20th, 2008 at 9:53 pm
Cabrera hurt his left hand, which is why Janish is in the game now.
Man! EE almost had that.
June 20th, 2008 at 9:53 pm
They never die, I hate the Yankees!
June 20th, 2008 at 9:55 pm
with that mustache Giambi looks like he could be LLM’s brother.
GO REDS
June 20th, 2008 at 9:55 pm
I think Jukich was the PTBNL in the Chris Denorfia deal.
Alright!!! Reds win!!!
Great game by EV. JC performed like a #2 hitter tonight.
June 20th, 2008 at 9:56 pm
And the Reds, after not being able to do ANYthing against the hapless Dodgers, come in and beat up the Yankees and their 7 game winning streak, in Yankee Stadium. I truly don’t get this team, but I’m happy tonight
June 20th, 2008 at 9:56 pm
YES!!! Now if Thompson can shut them up tomorrow!! Giambi looks like some 1970’s private investigator from a B movie
June 20th, 2008 at 9:57 pm
jbsh, that ‘injury delay’ in the 9th was on the first groundout to second. Phillips had a cramp in his calf. He was okay.
June 20th, 2008 at 9:57 pm
I wonder if Keppinger will be up to be at least a DH now with Carberra injured?
June 20th, 2008 at 9:57 pm
Jukich played college ball in South Dakota, which isn’t real impressive. He must have had some Moneyball indicators that lead to Oakland drafting him in the first place.
June 20th, 2008 at 9:59 pm
Gameday indicated an injury delay after Abreu groundout in bottom ninth, no explanation as yet. Janish was reference to the SS curse. I concur that the Patterson joke was hilarious, by the way. Well done CeeKeR.
June 20th, 2008 at 10:00 pm
Cabrera has a dislocated finger, they said he was headed to the hospital so he could get some painkillers and have the doctors “pop” it back into place.
June 20th, 2008 at 10:01 pm
How bad is Cabrera’s hand injury? This team may have to sign Pokey Reese out from some softball team.
CeeKer, this team is an enigma. That’s for sure. Having Bozo the Clown as our manager probably perpetuates that.
June 20th, 2008 at 10:02 pm
Thanks for injury delay explanation DA. Might be interesting to see tomorrow if there are any roster adjustments. Keppinger, please. Hopper, please.
June 20th, 2008 at 10:03 pm
Probably not a DL situation then, correct?
June 20th, 2008 at 10:04 pm
The announcers were talking like since he had to go to the hospital and have in numbed to pop it back that it may be sore for a few days.
June 20th, 2008 at 10:08 pm
But not 15 days so he likely stays on the active list.
Keppinger, BTW, was 2 for 4 including a double.
June 20th, 2008 at 10:10 pm
It sure will be nice to have Keppinger back in the line-up.
It was Cabrera’s glove hand wasn’t it?
June 20th, 2008 at 10:11 pm
Great win tonight. Volquez is just unbelievable. The kid has some much poise. He truly believes that nobody should ever score on him and you can tell he gets pissed when they do.
Y-City Jim-Your constant bashing of Bako is tiresome and unwarranted. You act like David Ross is Johnny Bench. Ross is an awful defensive catcher and not much better offensively. Bako has caught Volquez all year so why mess with success?
mhopp-Do you listen to the game with one ear? The announcers never said Derek Jeter and A-Rod were the most overrated players, they said it was according to a Sports Illustrated poll of former players. They then went on for five minutes talking about how they aren’t. Also, you have asked about Ben Jukich now 10-straight nights. The answer has never changed.
June 20th, 2008 at 10:12 pm
When it is time to demolish Yankee Stadium they should let fans from opposing team enter a raffle to have the opportunity to press the plunger for the explosives. I’d buy some chances.
June 20th, 2008 at 10:12 pm
I wouldn’t be surprised if Jolbert was put on the DL. I feel bad for him. He had a great game.
June 20th, 2008 at 10:16 pm
That slide by Cabrera was amazing!!!
June 20th, 2008 at 10:20 pm
Cabrera is going on the DL. The bone broke the skin. Ouch!!!
They are talking activating Hairston rather than Keppinger.
June 20th, 2008 at 10:35 pm
Dear God, Dusty is at it again!! No, I guess that makes sense since Kepp hasn’t been playing the field every night. I’d rather Hairston get re-injured than Kepp obviously.
June 20th, 2008 at 10:41 pm
There is plenty to kill Dusty about, but not this. Keppinger isn’t ready yet according to the medical staff.
June 21st, 2008 at 5:44 am
In defense of any catcher playing at Yankee stadium, You have a lot of ground to cover on a passed ball.
I can’t believe the room behind home plate at this stadium!
June 21st, 2008 at 7:58 am
I came home late tonight and just watched the game DVR’d on FSN.
A few observations:
George Grande is just horrible. I don’t have enough energy to itemize all of the grievious mistakes he makes while broadcasting a baseball game……particularly this one. He is flat out bad on many, many different levels.
As for our beloved Reds…
Cabrera’s slide was one of the best I have ever seen, Votto is a future All Star, Hopper needs to hire Jeff Gillooly to take care of Corey Baker’s son, and watching Edinson Volquez throw the ball makes me happy to be a Reds fan. What EV is doing this year is just astounding. Goodnight.
