Game Thread: Cardinals at Reds — 2008.06.11

The Cardinals again tonight? Didn’t we just play them? Someone needs to run that team out of town on a rail.

Johnny Cueto and Braden Looper take the hill tonight, and every time I think of Braden Looper, I smile and think of the Opening Day homer he gave up to Joe Randa in 2005.

Discuss the game here. We need a win!

I hope it’s not too long of a night, the Cardinals have 5 players in their line up that are batting 1.000 against Cueto. He has improved since then and should be more successful than Bailey.

    Get your mechanics fixed, Johnny.

    Rick “Cheater” Ankiel crushes one.

Anyone else think that Dick Pole is a lame pitching coach?

man, our starters have fallen off a cliff. not even worth following the team right now, they’re down so far before they get to the plate.

This team needs to find a couple of miracle workers for the coaching department. One for hitting and one for pitching. Vern Ruhle and Big Klu have to be turning over in their graves.

The Yankess want $400 million more for the new stadium. What are they building? The Taj Mahal or the National Cathedral? It was already the most expensive stadium ever.

anyone know how to get a team’s runs scored for each inning? i wanted to see how the reds are doing in the first inning, i feel like it has to be ugly.

out pitchers seem to give it up early, and especially in the patterson days, our hitters went down 1-2-3 every day it seemed.

Cueto – 46 pitches thru two innings. Yikes!

It sure doesn’t look like Looper is throwing in the 90’s. It just looks like he is lobbing it in there. Obviously he must though since the Reds haven’t hit anything hard yet.

Bench is going to be in the booth later. Probably marketing that baseball equipment movement for kids that he is part of in Cincinnati.

Hmmm Jason LaRue…I remember him; Jorge Cantu…I Remember him; Why is it that everyone the Reds let go seems to burn them? I can’t wait to see Lohse, it’ll be a no hitter for sure.

I despise the St. Louis Cardinals.

Points to the coaching staff me thinks.

Reading the Fay article regarding Bailey today. What does it say when Bailey loses 4 to 5 mph on his fastball but there is nothing physically wrong? It tells me that the pitching coach has screwed up his mechanics even more.

    Why is Jolbert playing 2b?

Bench is such a delight. He is down to earth much like Joe Nuxhall. The booth misses that type of guy.

I would assume to give BP the night off. It has been a while for him.

mhopp, the no-hitter (or perfect game) may be tonight with the way things are currently going.

Maybe Bench should be the pitching coach.

seems the reds get no-hit the first time through the order every damn night.

on bailey: from what i’ve read there’s a lot of debate in the baseball world about tweaking a kid’s mechanics. since the sport has become such a huge cash cow (with pitchers being perhaps the most valuable commodity) there’s been a much larger focus the last say 15 years on preventing injuries.

the rub often is, you take a kid with funky mechanics who’s got a ton of life on his pitches, and you “fix” him so he’ll stay healthy and all that life goes away. ryan wagner was a great example of that.

i haven’t read that the adjustments they’ve asked baily to make are because of injury risk, but the overall situation sounds about the same.

the question is, knowing that the johan santana’s of the world are very rare, is it better to have a kerry wood for a couple of years, or a 4th starter for 10?

Cueto looks pretty screwed up tonight. I don’t buy into Bako being such a good handler of pitchers.

    A couple cool baseball simulations:

I’ve been messing with the demo version of OOTP. Pretty involved.

FWIW, the Cards tv crew think that Cueto is tipping his pitches.

If someone with Cueto’s stuff can put the ball where it needs to go, it really doesn’t matter if he tips his pitches or not. In the case of Ramirez, it did matter.

Some interesting matchups for the weekend:

    Harang vs. Masterson
    Wakefield vs. Volquez
    Beckett vs. Bailey

If Homer can’t get the adrenaline pumping about squaring off with fellow Texan Beckett then I give up.

“Boy, Jerry was doing a hell of a job,” Baker said. “I’m going to have to get Corey (Patterson) in there sometime because he’s starting to swing the bat good again. Made some adjustments. We’ll see.”

Sure looked like CP was starting to swing the bat on that ground out in the 8th.

At this rate Griffey will be 70 years old by the time he wins a ring as a RED.

    Dusty should be ashamed!
