The Last Road Trip – Process vs. Results

There’s been considerable gnashing of teeth about the Reds’ recent 3-5 road trip. Well, contrary to the common blogger/stat-geek stereotype, I actually watched those games, and I thought that aside from a couple games, the Reds played pretty darn well.

This blog post, by Padres Assistant GM Paul DePodesta, really tracks my thinking on the process: Yeah, W-L are what ultimately matter, but how they play is, over the long run, a better barometer than the results over a single week.

Thank you for pointing this out. I thought they played very competitively in the Phil’s series, and let one get away against the Marlins. A break here or there and I think we’d be looking at a 4-4 or 5-3 trip.

I don’t want to sound overly optimistic about what up to this point has been a bad team, but I don’t think things were as disastrous as some were painting it. Contrast this trip with the last west coast trip and I’d take last week all day.

Then again, they come home and lay an egg last night, so what do I know :)

“Boy, Jerry was doing a hell of a job,” Baker said. “I’m going to have to get Corey (Patterson) in there sometime because he’s starting to swing the bat good again. Made some adjustments. We’ll see.”

    Be afraid. Very afraid.

That’s ridiculous. Sometimes I think Baker’s #1 goal is to advance and promote Corey Patterson’s career, and winning baseball games comes in a distant second.

  • Corey Patterson: 2008 version of Juan Castro: defensive replacement, pinch runner. period. end of story.

It’s not like this club has a dearth of leftys to begin with.

Three catchers and Patterson. No decent right handers off the bench. Last place. I wasn’t a math major but I can add that up. I can’t blame anyone for Keppinger or Gonzalez being injured, but I am dissatisfied with the basic construction of the team which is why injuries are so devastating to this club. This is really an all or nothing lineup that is run out there night after night.
