Game Thread: Cardinals at Reds — 2008.06.10

Homer Bailey returns to the mound and the Reds return home — thankfully! — to face the evil Cardinals tonight at Great American Ballpark. Mitchell Boggs, a 24-year-old from Georgia will be making his second major league start for the “stinky Cardinals,” as my kids like to call them.

Some pre-game transactions: Jerry Hairston was placed on the 15-day DL with a broken left thumb; Jolbert Cabrera was called up to replace Hairston. Also, Gary Majewski was placed on the bereavement list (his wife is having a baby, evidently) and Danny Herrera is back (!) with the Reds in the Majewk Man’s place.

We gotta rebound with a huge homestand here, folks. I know the Reds are playing some tough teams, but this is a chance to play well and get that record up and over the .500 mark.

Discuss it here….

I’d be happy with 6-3 and a .500 record at the end of the homestand.

ESPN showing Bruce at leadoff tonight. He’s also the only player in the lineup hitting .280.

Harrera and Cabrera with the club.

Hairston on 15-day DL. Majewski on bereavement (?) due to wife having a baby.

Nice work by Homer in the 1st inning.

Jay Bruce barely ever steps out of the box does he?

Griffey responds to the standing O by drawing #1200 (walks).

It never ceases to amaze me how the Reds fail to show up when they face young pitchers. It seems like every time they face a guy making his first start they get 1, 2 or 0 runs. They did that over the weekend against the Marlins, if I recall. Combine that and Homer Bailey only throwing strikes when they’re belt high over the middle and the Reds will drop another one to Mr. Baseball.

What is with this team and pitchers making their MLB debut? Seems like they face a ton of them for one thing, and never seem to do very well.

I’m going to go out on a limb and venture a guess that Homer Bailey is going to spend most of his big league career in the bullpen – if hey stays in the bigs at all.

How is it that the Cardinals always seem to have a different second baseman every year, but they all can hit? The Reds desperately need Walt Jocketty to build a team like he did in St. Louis where it seems like everyone in the lineup can get 2-out hits. This all-or-nothing Reds lineup is getting very irritating to watch. They either hit four homers and win 9-4 or they hit no homers and lose 6-2. You can’t blame Jim Bowden for that anymore, he’s been gone five years.

Homer Bailey is not ready for the majors, he has been beaten multiple times at AAA and has continued to have control problems. Like to see them bring someone else like Thompson or Maloney.

Can someone who is watching the game (only got gamecast) tell why Homer Bailey pitched bad (Hanging a lot/Leaving the ball up…)? Also, what was his fastball clocked at tonight?

I thought Votto was due, he’s missed two in the last two days. ROY hopefully, either him or Bruce

  • Bako has that ‘come-backer to the mound’ down pat.

  • I realize you don’t want to burn your pen so early, but when you have the starter reeling and a runner in scoring position, I say go for it right there.

It’s not Bogg’s MLB debut. Just his starting debut.

Bailey will probably learn more up here from Dick Pole. I’m not real sold on Ted Power’s talents at Louisville. That seems to be the level these young pitchers stagnate. No need to rush Thompson and Maloney anyhow.

Just tired of “maybe next year” but then again if the Reds could hit with RISP they should be above .500 easy

    ReplyReply
  • mhopp

 Once again, trouble with RISP!

    ReplyReply
  • Y-City Jim

Maybe if they would increase the RISP opportunities to the level of a Boston, St. Louis, Philadelphia, etc they would easily climb over .500. Getting Keppinger back and in the top of the order would goes a way toward helping that.

I wish Dusty had the guts (or the good sense) to put Dunn in the two spot.

If Bailey isn’t ready then what makes you think that Thompson and Maloney is?

The next guy that pitches to Pujols with a base open should be shot. Bailey is a moron. That is just dumb baseball and Bako and Baker deserve some of the blame too.

    We already miss Hairston.

Still think we can come back in this game. If the pen can shut them out, we win 6-5.

Larussa is smart enough to have Ludwick (OBP .379) in the two spot. Did any of his previous teams do that with him?

And that is why Larussa wins

Bailey gave up 4 or more runs in 5 out of his last 10 games at AAA and 5-6 runs on several occasions. Generally one needs to perform at AAA and/or AA prior to coming to the bigs…with that in mind the other two have performed substantially better. Moloney not as well but at least he is a LHP. I guess I feel that the attitude of “if you can perform you can play, if you can’t you need to learn to or else you’ll be elsewhere.”

WOW! What a terrible game and it doesn’t look any better with Arroyo on the hill tomorrow.

  • WillRedsCHI

I am getting sick of watching this garbage. I’d give Arroyo 3 more start to see what he can do, if he doesn’t improve then send him to the Pen. We also need to send Bailey back to AAA and give Affeldt a shot (While we wait to see what happens with Thompson and Maloney). We also need to get rid of Patterson (DUH) and pray for Keppinger and Hairston to recover.

We also need to promote Jukich to AAA and see what he can do there.

WillRedsCHI: Now your talkin’…this is the kind of thing that Larussa would do…if you can’t perform you’ll be somewhere else and that is why he wins. He may seem like a jerk and unorthodox at times but he wins, nobody can argue that. This team has the talent to perform but their not being utilized correctly. Easy for us to say but really it’s true.

Louisville just took over sole position of 1st place by beating Pawtukett (a very good team) with a below average lineup…they are being utilized correctly and it’s a different person contributing every night. By the way, does anyone know the history of Justin Lehr? He is about 30 years old but really is doing well at AAA.

just a note about bailey’s runs tonight. the 4 in the fourth all could have been avoided if EdE doesnt drop that ball and turns a double play. similar to brandon phillips not being in position to tag the bag on a doulbe up throw from Bruce in sunday’s game in miami. small things like that go a long way, and they are killing this team. not to mention how frustrating they are to watch.

    ReplyReply
  • good points, joe. Little things do seem to add up for the Reds very quickly. However, pitching to Pujhols with a base open when you are behind in the count is pretty deserving of the fate Homer received. We lost on a combination of big things and little things; in other words, we blew chunks last night.
