More on the MLB Draft

Justin has his thoughts here on Reds first-rounder Yonder Alonso, 1B from Miama (FL). Another friend of Redleg Nation, Doug, has his report here (and his pre-draft scouting report here). Both are definitely worth reading.

Here are the remainder of the Reds’ first day picks:

1 Yonder Alonso 1B University of Miami
3 Zachary Stewart RHP Texas Tech University
4 Tyler Cline RHP Cass H.S. (Cartersville, GA)
5 Clayton Shunick RHP North Carolina State University
6 Alexander Buchholz SS University of Delaware

The links are to Doug’s reports on each. Good stuff.

By the way, after sleeping on it, I’m very satisfied with the pick of Alonso in the first round. I think everyone who is saying this means the end of Adam Dunn is jumping the gun. This guy won’t sniff the majors until 2010. Lots can happen between now and then. And if Alonso is ready before 2010, that’s a great problem to have. We would have two very valuable chips (in Joey Votto and Alonso).

We have a lot of time before there is an issue with the major league roster. This pick means nothing with respect to Votto and Dunn. The Reds just took the best available player. I’m happy about that.

    In 2010, a lineup with. . . .

    3. Bruce, rf
    4. Alonso, 1b
    5. Dunn, lf
    6. Votto, ??

Uh, no. Not four lefties of similar bat skill. There is drafting BPA and drafting BPA that is best for your organization. Someone (or two) will have go from the above).

Trade on or two to Texas for another Edison Volquez?

Votto will get moved to RF and Bruce will be center. Of all of those guys Dunn is the least likely to stick around.

Will all these kids go to the minors? How does it work if one of them didn’t graduate high school?
