Reds’ super-prospect Jay Bruce will be joining the major league club tomorrow. A press conference is scheduled for 4:00 p.m. at Great American Ballpark. Here’s the press release from the Reds:
Tomorrow the Reds are expected to promote from Class AAA Louisville top prospect OF Jay Bruce.
A corresponding roster move will be announced prior to tomorrow’s 7:10 p.m. game against the Pirates.
Bruce and Reds President of Baseball Operations and General Manager Walt Jocketty will be available to the media tomorrow at 4:00 p.m. in the Reds’ dugout at Great American Ball Park.
Bruce will wear uniform number 32 and when he plays will be making his Major League debut.
Bruce, 21, has been rated the best prospect in the minor leagues. He has spent the season at Louisville, where in 49 games he hit .364 with 9 doubles, 5 triples, 10 HR, 37 RBI and 8 stolen bases. He leads the International League in hitting and hits (67) and ranks among the IL leaders in slugging percentage (.630, 3rd), runs scored (34, 4th), extra-base hits (24, T4th) and RBI (T5th).
Very exciting. Now, let’s hope the “corresponding roster move” will be the release of this stiff.
About time, start packing Corey
If anyone but Corey Patterson is gone, this franchise is the biggest joke in Major League Baseball.
Yes!!! I had just gone to Louisville’s game day and noticed he wasnt in the lineup … was going to come here and ask if perhaps this was a sign … guess I dont need to now! I love it! Let the future begin! I’ll say this though along with Matt … if Crusty starts CP over Bruce at all, Walt better be handing them both a pink slip.
This franchise will start making progress if Patterson is the one released because it means the front office is finally going to start to tell Dusty Baker that they make the personnel decisions, not him.
Trade Griffey next.
Patterson is actually one of the best defenders in the league. How bad will our offense be without him? Obviously we need him to play over either Patterson or Griffey, but wouldn’t he be better in right field, especially if it meant hitting Patterson 8th?
Meant to say how bad will our “defense” be. Oops
Junior is going nowhere. He has told the front office that he will veto any trade. He is ending his career in Cincinnati.
Patterson has been overrated by Dusty as a CF. Hairston is a better CF than CP is. I wouldn’t let Patterson bat 10th if there was such a spot. He is not a MLB baseball player.
Bruce will be fine in CF.
I wasn’t going by Dusty’s praising. He obviously knows nothing.
However, he’s near the top of MLB in RZR and OOZ plays, and with our two corner stiffs, we need a great CF.
If the choice is Bruce or Patterson, the answer is Bruce. I just think there’s a better choice to be had.
I have to say, I really doubt Bruce will make a huge difference to the fortunes of this team this year, but having him playing will make me keep watching, whereas yesterday I was ready to pack it in for the year.
So what’s the lineup projected to be at this point? Who will lead off?
Obviously the excitement level is there with Jay getting the call. No way he won’t start tomorrow unless Dusty wants an express ticket outta here!
I really think there has to be more than just that move. Lincoln probably saved his bacon with an effective performance yesterday. Can he put back to back efforts together? He has to prove it but he probably got himself a week or two.
Fogg – I am not against giving him a spot start. I think its either do it or DFA him. Yesterday was the perfect opportunity to get him in long relief and he could not get the 7 / 8 or 9 spot out for the Padres. Its obvious he aint got the trust of the coaching staff so either spot him a start to see if he can come alive again or bring someone else up.
I would put Belilse in the bullpen asap. If it aint Fogg maybe you do go with Maloney to start. I don’t think you can get Thompson up this year – he is a keeper for 2009. Adkins or Madjeski must be close to a call up soon.
Anyways good see we have plenty of anticipation for the next few months even if that means our best hope in 2008 is fighting for 3rd place!
Amazing – I just got to Columbus to watch a 4-game series that the Bats are playing here. That’s okay – I’m really here to see another player anyway, and he did well tonight. Go Bruce! Will he play every day as they’ve essentially promised before?
Why not give Encarnarcion a look at lead-off? EE, Jnr, BP, Bruce, Dunn, Votto, Hairston (Janish) & Ross (Bako). Were gunner be LH heavy somewhere…..I like EE getting on base more than Hairston / Janish for the big boys to drive him in (and I know he is slumping but he will come out of it soon and hit .350 for a week or two). Good thing about EE is he hits lots of doubles so less chance of those Jnr/BP double plays we have grown to ‘love’. When Kep gets back we can look to at a more traditional line up……
Isn’t the Dusty mentality to have the CF lead off? The rest of the line-up pretty much stays as it is probably. I’m not saying that is what I would do. I’m just saying that the the Baker track record. If David Ross played CF then Baker would have him lead off.
Well I guess there is a big chance that Griff won’t play tomorrow being that he played the whole 2.1 games yesterday and they had the horror trip back from Southern Cal. So we may still see Jay in RF and Freel in CF leading off. With the Lefty going the next day you might see Dunn have a chair and Bruce slide to CF. I suppose EE could sit tomorrow and Freel leading off playing 3rd….
I sure hope the REDS do the right thing and dump Patterson now!
I wonder if Homer will ever get the call?
Enquirer raises the possibility of Hatteburg being released today when Bruce is activated. Points out that last two games that Votto has rested, Valentin has started. (Boy, sure am glad that Krivsky didn’t trade Hatteburg when the Reds Sox were interested.)
Could Reds hold on to Patterson and release Hatteburg? Or will someone develop a sudden injury?
Earlier comments about Griffey should be the one to go:
Griffey’s May numbers are not great:
256avg/340obp/337slg – 667 OPS
But if you think that is bad, how bad is Corey Patterson hurting this team:
183avg/183obp/200slg – 383 OPS
Ryan Freel’s SLG is higher than Patterson’s OPS. A .183 obp for the leadoff hitter is why you lose a lot of close games that should otherwise win. .383 is what you want from the leadoff hitter’s obp alone.
May 27! Isn’t this timing a bit odd? Not saying I didn’t want Bruce here from the beginning but wouldn’t one week and June 2 have been a lot more businesslike for future arbitration eligibility. What is one more week at this point?
That June 2 date is not carved in stone. Bruce’s arb-eligibility in 2011 will be determined by how he ranks in service time, compared to the rest of the guys with >2, but <3 years of service time. It’s impossible to know until you get to that point. June 2 is a guess, based on prior years.
Two big reasons why Hatteberg can’t be traded:
1. Numbers as a pinch hitter this year (19 PAs): .059 .158 .059
2. Numbers outside of GABP last year: .244 .351 .366 (compared to .370 .436 .571 at home).
Keep Hatteberg, Adios Patterson. Hatteberg will have trade value later on, not to mention he’s a better hitter. Patterson has no trade value and will only decrease (if that’s possible) in the future.
From the category of “You’ve gotta be kidding me”: Dateline Chicago: MLB has told little league officials that they cannot use MLB team names, not just insignias but the names themselves, unless they buy the jerseys from Majestic, which is much more expensive than other suppliers. So teams would have to spend needed funds to buy new uniforms if they want to use those names. They are forbidden to use the ones they currently have….Has someone truly lost his/her mind? Baseball is losing it’s following among youth by the droves and they pull a stunt like this? If a kid was on a team named, for instance, the Angels, and he played second or third, might he become interested in a Chone Figgins and maybe collect a card or two or watch a game now and then because of that fact? Absolute greedy madness at work by someone. I know it’s off-topic, but I needed a moment to vent. Thanks for the opportunity. We now return you to the regularly scheduled thread already in progress…
My guess for tonight’s lineup:
Hairston
Votto (or Bruce)
Jr.
Phillips
Dunn
EE
Bruce (or Votto)
Bako
Cueto
And Patterson will be traded for a swift kick in the nuts!
