Game Thread: Marlins vs. Reds – 2008.05.14

No carpal tunnel or T-ball double headers here! Just good ol’ Reds baseball talk!  The Reds will send Bronson Arroyo to the mound, fresh off his best start of the season against the Mets.  A win tonight would guarantee the Reds a winning series and set up a possible 4-game sweep of the Fish tomorrow night.

Let’s hope the Reds can rally despite the news that Keppinger went to the DL.  Discuss the game here…

Good or bad, Watching Freel play is worth the price of a ticket anyday!
I hate to see him sit the bench.

I heard (from a Larosa’s pizza delivery driver) the reason we can’t bring up Bruce is by bringing him up he’ll be eligible for arbitration at an earlier date making this a strictly financial decision. Can anyone confirm or dispute this?

    ReplyReply
  • renbutler

VERY wide strike zone in the top of the first.

    ReplyReply
  • Ron

Wouldnt surprise me Slatt .. but in reality, Bruce wont play everyday until Jr or Dunn are moved. You know Dusty is going to get his boy CP playing time so Bruce would be a part time player and that would just be a waste of time … at least at AAA he can hone his skills by playing every day. I look for Bruce to stay in AAA until Jr is dealt.

    ReplyReply
  • Jack Bauer

Confirmed slatts but in reality that shouldn’t matter because the reds should follow suit as the marlins did with ramirez and the rays with longoria signing them early for long term deals to make the point irrelevant.

    ReplyReply
  • Ron

Jr looks almost as bad a Dunn in the batters box anymore

    ReplyReply
  • slattspub

Thanks for the clarification. I’m beyond frustrated with the whole patterson situation. I liked the dusty signing but every time patterson’s in the lineup I like dusty a little less.

    ReplyReply
  • Ron

Another clutch AB by Dunn … you would think he would run into one a little more often … is he ever going to get it going?

    Good Lord what a circus.

This team is crazy. Patterson makes a miscue but the Reds get an out from it.

2 errors on one play, yet absolutely no harm done.

    ReplyReply
  • Chris

    Bronson looks REALLY good tonight.

    ReplyReply
  • DevilsAdvocate

So it’s a two-error play that ends up with the same result that they would have had if there were zero errors on the play. The Reds come up with something new and interesting just about every day.

    ReplyReply
  • DevilsAdvocate

No error charged to Votto after all. Earned and unearned runs are a laugh.

Hairston’s doing all right for himself. 1-0 Reds.

  • Slow game thread, but Reds finally making some noise. Good to see Phillips have an RBI, maybe he (and the rest of the Reds) can heat up some more!

    ReplyReply
  • DevilsAdvocate

Marlins looking a lot like the Reds on the basepaths.

    ReplyReply
  • Justin Anderson

WooHoo! Finally an opponent makes a base-running blunder and Patterson gets Ramirez trying to tag to 3rd!

    ReplyReply
  • Mark

That was a great play by Patterson. He set himself up for the throw perfectly and put a dart into EE. That on a play that nobody was expecting anyone to tag up on.

    ReplyReply
  • Justin Anderson

Arroyo still dancing around runs with balls hitting the tops of outfield walls, being the beneficiary of good outfield arms and poor baserunning decisions by Marlins players and basecoaches… Shutout for Arroyo still in tact!

    ReplyReply
  • Chris

Patterson looking like Dave Parker tonight. But really, it’s mostly just horrible baserunning by Miami.

    ReplyReply
  • Ron

    Dunner! Finally!

You guys see the box score from Louisville tonight yet.

    Bruce: 3-3, 2B, 3B, HR and 2 BB

    ReplyReply
  • Ron

Yeah … Bruce is on fire … hitting a mere .366 on the season now … in an interview, Bruce was more proud of the 2 walks than any of the hits … I like to hear that.

    ReplyReply
  • Justin Anderson

How long can they keep that guy down there? honestly? with keppinger down.. why not bring him up instead of janish? you have Phillips, Hairston, and Freel who can all platoon SS and 2B.

    ReplyReply
  • Tom

You can’t walk every at bat when you’re putting the bat on the ball like he is.

    ReplyReply
  • Justin Anderson

I wouldnt stick Freel at short unless it was an emergency-type situation but he is more than an adept 2b. I am as excited as anyone to see Janish but I think I could restrain myself for this perfect opportunity to get Bruce into the 25-man, especially the way he is tearing the cover off the ball right now. When you are as hot as he is right now… you can hit anybody, anywhere!

    ReplyReply
  • I wish Dusty would pinch-hit for Arroyo. He’s at 95 pitches with only 2 Ks thru 6 innings. Granted, it’s still a shutout but I guarantee he won’t pitch 8 (or 9) tonight. Why not let Hatteberg bat with a man on base?

    ReplyReply
  • Jimmy James

I don’t know what was wrong with Arroyo early in the season, but I think it’s safe to say that he wasn’t hurt, as many of us thought. His last two starts have been outstanding.

    ReplyReply
  • Ron

Bruce wouldnt play every day up here with CP, Dunn & Griffey and you know Dusty isnt going to start Bruce over any of those three … bringing him up here to spot start wouldnt be good for his developement. As much as I hate to see him staying at Lousiville, its best for him until we deal Jr or Dunn … or both

    ReplyReply
  • Justin Anderson

Jocketty: “Im torn here, Dusty… Bruce would put some serious butts in the empty seats right now and he is hitting like the ball is on a tee, but I guess ideally he would have to be a SS and Janish has been doing alright thus far for Louisville this season. So who do you want?”
Baker: “Walt, you know how much it would hurt my feelings to have to play Jay over my poor boy, Corey. I wouldnt want to tarnish his silver spoon… bring up Janish”

    ReplyReply
  • Jimmy James

Arroyo just brilliant through seven innings. Wow.

    ReplyReply
  • Ron

Wow, Bronson … looking good brother!

    ReplyReply
  • Justin Anderson

Ron, I agree with that in principle that he can play every day at AAA but when you figure that Freel can move from 4th outfield duty to infield duty during Keppingers DL stay, it would work well to bump Patterson to the 4th outfield role in favor of Bruce.

    ReplyReply
  • TylerS

Think Arroyo goes back out in the 8th? 111 pitches.

    ReplyReply
  • Jimmy James

Jay Bruce RIGHT NOW would be twice the hitter that Corey Patterson is. Keeping Bruce down because Dusty doesn’t want to hurt his buddy Corey’s feelings is insane.

If the Reds are waiting to June 1 for financial reasons, I can’t argue too much. If keeping him down for two more weeks will let us keep him for an extra season, I can’t argue with that logic.

    ReplyReply
  • Tom

That was some nice stuff from Bronson. It’ll be good to try and give the bullpen some rest. It’s been a long week and hopefully they’ll be needed against the Tribe this weekend.

    ReplyReply
  • Justin Anderson

HELL YEAH BRONSON! Finally coming around and after that start in Atlanta I thought it would never happen! BAck to my point, though, I really think Freel’s versatility would be the absolute key to making that move work… and work well.

    ReplyReply
  • Tom

Coco will be needed, to be specific.

    ReplyReply
  • Jimmy James

I think Arroyo will be back on the mound for the 8th….but I’m not sure that he should be. Isn’t he starting on three days rest anyway?

    ReplyReply
  • Hairston apparently wants everyone to know he can play too!

    ReplyReply
  • Jimmy James

I was wondering, Tom! I hope the bullpen isn’t needed too much this weekend, other than Coco.

    ReplyReply
  • Justin Anderson

Jimmy… good point! maybe they can keep Janish until June 1 then switch him and Bruce. What are everyone elses thoughts on changing Freels current role temporarily to get Bruce a confidence booster of a major league promotion.

  • Jimmy James

I thought the Marlins had the best record in the league? Don’t mess with our Redlegs!!!

    ReplyReply
  • Justin Anderson

Thank You Junior! We would be .500 or better if we weren’t STILL waiting on Griffey and Dunn to get on track.

    ReplyReply
  • Ron

I agree with you guys on Jay being a much better option than CP … I have just watched enough of Baker’s decisions to know that Bruce would not start over CP … that is the only reason I say Bruce is better off where he is. YOu can look at Janish as an example. He is a great defensive SS .. probaly better than Hairston, but Baker is already on record as saying Paul will only get spot starts.

    ReplyReply

So, through two boneheaded substitutions, now both Griffey and Dunn aren’t in the lineup in extra innings.

Dusty needs to remember that 6 runs isn’t enough for a last place team.

Absolutely true, Dunn homered his last time up. But still hitting .208 for the year, with 7 homers over nearly 7 weeks. Unless that singular at-bat represents him turning a major corner, those are bad odds. On the other hand, the Reds have no bench. And if the Dunn/Griffey combo is out, that means Patterson, Freel, and Hairston are in for the duration no matter what. Didn’t matter tonight, thankfully.
