No carpal tunnel or T-ball double headers here! Just good ol’ Reds baseball talk!  The Reds will send Bronson Arroyo to the mound, fresh off his best start of the season against the Mets.  A win tonight would guarantee the Reds a winning series and set up a possible 4-game sweep of the Fish tomorrow night.

Let’s hope the Reds can rally despite the news that Keppinger went to the DL.  Discuss the game here…

    4. Who is this Bruce guy?

      Comment by Nathan — 5/14/2008 @ 6:47 pm

    5. Good or bad, Watching Freel play is worth the price of a ticket anyday!
I hate to see him sit the bench.

      Comment by Mike Martz — 5/14/2008 @ 7:02 pm

    6. o.k. guys let’s suck it up and win one for the KEPPER! sorry for the pun….

      Comment by Mike Martz — 5/14/2008 @ 7:06 pm

    7. I heard (from a Larosa’s pizza delivery driver) the reason we can’t bring up Bruce is by bringing him up he’ll be eligible for arbitration at an earlier date making this a strictly financial decision. Can anyone confirm or dispute this?

      Comment by Slattspub — 5/14/2008 @ 7:07 pm

    8. VERY wide strike zone in the top of the first.

      Comment by renbutler — 5/14/2008 @ 7:15 pm

    9. Wouldnt surprise me Slatt .. but in reality, Bruce wont play everyday until Jr or Dunn are moved. You know Dusty is going to get his boy CP playing time so Bruce would be a part time player and that would just be a waste of time … at least at AAA he can hone his skills by playing every day. I look for Bruce to stay in AAA until Jr is dealt.

      Comment by Ron — 5/14/2008 @ 7:16 pm

    10. Confirmed slatts but in reality that shouldn’t matter because the reds should follow suit as the marlins did with ramirez and the rays with longoria signing them early for long term deals to make the point irrelevant.

      Comment by Jack Bauer — 5/14/2008 @ 7:21 pm

    11. Jr looks almost as bad a Dunn in the batters box anymore

      Comment by Ron — 5/14/2008 @ 7:24 pm

    12. Thanks for the clarification. I’m beyond frustrated with the whole patterson situation. I liked the dusty signing but every time patterson’s in the lineup I like dusty a little less.

      Comment by slattspub — 5/14/2008 @ 7:59 pm

    13. Another clutch AB by Dunn … you would think he would run into one a little more often … is he ever going to get it going?

      Comment by Ron — 5/14/2008 @ 8:32 pm

    14. Good Lord what a circus.

      Comment by Chris — 5/14/2008 @ 8:34 pm

    15. This team is crazy. Patterson makes a miscue but the Reds get an out from it.

      Comment by DevilsAdvocate — 5/14/2008 @ 8:34 pm

    16. 2 errors on one play, yet absolutely no harm done.

      Comment by Chris — 5/14/2008 @ 8:35 pm

    17. Bronson looks REALLY good tonight.

      Comment by Chris — 5/14/2008 @ 8:36 pm

    18. So it’s a two-error play that ends up with the same result that they would have had if there were zero errors on the play. The Reds come up with something new and interesting just about every day.

      Comment by DevilsAdvocate — 5/14/2008 @ 8:37 pm

    19. No error charged to Votto after all. Earned and unearned runs are a laugh.

      Comment by DevilsAdvocate — 5/14/2008 @ 8:42 pm

    20. Hairston’s doing all right for himself. 1-0 Reds.

      Comment by DevilsAdvocate — 5/14/2008 @ 8:50 pm

    21. BP. Two out hit with RISP!

      Comment by Abner — 5/14/2008 @ 8:56 pm

    22. Finally broke through on this guy … I was beginning to wonder … his stuff isnt all that impressive.

      Comment by Ron — 5/14/2008 @ 8:57 pm

    23. Slow game thread, but Reds finally making some noise. Good to see Phillips have an RBI, maybe he (and the rest of the Reds) can heat up some more!

      Comment by CeeKeR — 5/14/2008 @ 8:58 pm

    24. Marlins looking a lot like the Reds on the basepaths.

      Comment by DevilsAdvocate — 5/14/2008 @ 9:05 pm

    25. WooHoo! Finally an opponent makes a base-running blunder and Patterson gets Ramirez trying to tag to 3rd!

      Comment by Justin Anderson — 5/14/2008 @ 9:06 pm

    26. That was a great play by Patterson. He set himself up for the throw perfectly and put a dart into EE. That on a play that nobody was expecting anyone to tag up on.

      Comment by Mark — 5/14/2008 @ 9:07 pm

    27. Arroyo still dancing around runs with balls hitting the tops of outfield walls, being the beneficiary of good outfield arms and poor baserunning decisions by Marlins players and basecoaches… Shutout for Arroyo still in tact!

      Comment by Justin Anderson — 5/14/2008 @ 9:08 pm

    28. Patterson looking like Dave Parker tonight. But really, it’s mostly just horrible baserunning by Miami.

      Comment by Chris — 5/14/2008 @ 9:09 pm

    29. Dunner! Finally!

      Comment by Ron — 5/14/2008 @ 9:13 pm

    30. Yeah, really - Marty just said before the homer that Dunn was 4 for his last 32. Needs power.

      Comment by DevilsAdvocate — 5/14/2008 @ 9:14 pm

    31. You guys see the box score from Louisville tonight yet.

      Bruce: 3-3, 2B, 3B, HR and 2 BB

      Comment by Tom — 5/14/2008 @ 9:14 pm

    32. Yeah … Bruce is on fire … hitting a mere .366 on the season now … in an interview, Bruce was more proud of the 2 walks than any of the hits … I like to hear that.

      Comment by Ron — 5/14/2008 @ 9:16 pm

    33. How long can they keep that guy down there? honestly? with keppinger down.. why not bring him up instead of janish? you have Phillips, Hairston, and Freel who can all platoon SS and 2B.

      Comment by Justin Anderson — 5/14/2008 @ 9:16 pm

    34. You can’t walk every at bat when you’re putting the bat on the ball like he is.

      Comment by Tom — 5/14/2008 @ 9:17 pm

    35. I wouldnt stick Freel at short unless it was an emergency-type situation but he is more than an adept 2b. I am as excited as anyone to see Janish but I think I could restrain myself for this perfect opportunity to get Bruce into the 25-man, especially the way he is tearing the cover off the ball right now. When you are as hot as he is right now… you can hit anybody, anywhere!

      Comment by Justin Anderson — 5/14/2008 @ 9:19 pm

    36. I wish Dusty would pinch-hit for Arroyo. He’s at 95 pitches with only 2 Ks thru 6 innings. Granted, it’s still a shutout but I guarantee he won’t pitch 8 (or 9) tonight. Why not let Hatteberg bat with a man on base?

      Comment by SchrockStar — 5/14/2008 @ 9:19 pm

    37. I don’t know what was wrong with Arroyo early in the season, but I think it’s safe to say that he wasn’t hurt, as many of us thought. His last two starts have been outstanding.

      Comment by Jimmy James — 5/14/2008 @ 9:23 pm

    38. Bruce wouldnt play every day up here with CP, Dunn & Griffey and you know Dusty isnt going to start Bruce over any of those three … bringing him up here to spot start wouldnt be good for his developement. As much as I hate to see him staying at Lousiville, its best for him until we deal Jr or Dunn … or both

      Comment by Ron — 5/14/2008 @ 9:24 pm

    39. Jocketty: “Im torn here, Dusty… Bruce would put some serious butts in the empty seats right now and he is hitting like the ball is on a tee, but I guess ideally he would have to be a SS and Janish has been doing alright thus far for Louisville this season. So who do you want?”
Baker: “Walt, you know how much it would hurt my feelings to have to play Jay over my poor boy, Corey. I wouldnt want to tarnish his silver spoon… bring up Janish”

      Comment by Justin Anderson — 5/14/2008 @ 9:25 pm

    40. Arroyo just brilliant through seven innings. Wow.

      Comment by Jimmy James — 5/14/2008 @ 9:26 pm

    41. Wow, Bronson … looking good brother!

      Comment by Ron — 5/14/2008 @ 9:26 pm

    42. Ron, I agree with that in principle that he can play every day at AAA but when you figure that Freel can move from 4th outfield duty to infield duty during Keppingers DL stay, it would work well to bump Patterson to the 4th outfield role in favor of Bruce.

      Comment by Justin Anderson — 5/14/2008 @ 9:27 pm

    43. Think Arroyo goes back out in the 8th? 111 pitches.

      Comment by TylerS — 5/14/2008 @ 9:28 pm

    44. Jay Bruce RIGHT NOW would be twice the hitter that Corey Patterson is. Keeping Bruce down because Dusty doesn’t want to hurt his buddy Corey’s feelings is insane.

If the Reds are waiting to June 1 for financial reasons, I can’t argue too much. If keeping him down for two more weeks will let us keep him for an extra season, I can’t argue with that logic.

      Comment by Jimmy James — 5/14/2008 @ 9:29 pm

    45. That was some nice stuff from Bronson. It’ll be good to try and give the bullpen some rest. It’s been a long week and hopefully they’ll be needed against the Tribe this weekend.

      Comment by Tom — 5/14/2008 @ 9:29 pm

    46. HELL YEAH BRONSON! Finally coming around and after that start in Atlanta I thought it would never happen! BAck to my point, though, I really think Freel’s versatility would be the absolute key to making that move work… and work well.

      Comment by Justin Anderson — 5/14/2008 @ 9:29 pm

    47. Coco will be needed, to be specific.

      Comment by Tom — 5/14/2008 @ 9:29 pm

    48. I think Arroyo will be back on the mound for the 8th….but I’m not sure that he should be. Isn’t he starting on three days rest anyway?

      Comment by Jimmy James — 5/14/2008 @ 9:30 pm

    49. Hairston apparently wants everyone to know he can play too!

      Comment by CeeKeR — 5/14/2008 @ 9:31 pm

    50. I was wondering, Tom! I hope the bullpen isn’t needed too much this weekend, other than Coco.

      Comment by Jimmy James — 5/14/2008 @ 9:31 pm

    51. Jimmy… good point! maybe they can keep Janish until June 1 then switch him and Bruce. What are everyone elses thoughts on changing Freels current role temporarily to get Bruce a confidence booster of a major league promotion.

      Comment by Justin Anderson — 5/14/2008 @ 9:32 pm

    52. Junior with an RBI double! This team is coming around!

      Comment by Jimmy James — 5/14/2008 @ 9:32 pm

    53. The pitching matchups look pretty entertaining this weekend. Battle of the ERA leaders might get the Redlegs some national press.

      Comment by Tom — 5/14/2008 @ 9:33 pm

    54. I thought the Marlins had the best record in the league? Don’t mess with our Redlegs!!!

      Comment by Jimmy James — 5/14/2008 @ 9:33 pm

    55. Thank You Junior! We would be .500 or better if we weren’t STILL waiting on Griffey and Dunn to get on track.

      Comment by Justin Anderson — 5/14/2008 @ 9:33 pm

    56. I agree with you guys on Jay being a much better option than CP … I have just watched enough of Baker’s decisions to know that Bruce would not start over CP … that is the only reason I say Bruce is better off where he is. YOu can look at Janish as an example. He is a great defensive SS .. probaly better than Hairston, but Baker is already on record as saying Paul will only get spot starts.

      Comment by Ron — 5/14/2008 @ 9:34 pm

    57. This franchise makes me so mad sometimes, but I absolutely love these guys. When the Reds are playing well, all is good with life.

      Comment by Kenny — 5/14/2008 @ 9:35 pm

    58. Wow… Cantu with 2 throwing errors on the series! Glad we dropped him???

      Comment by Justin Anderson — 5/14/2008 @ 9:35 pm

    59. You are probably right, Ron. I don’t trust Dusty to play Bruce every day.

      Comment by Kenny — 5/14/2008 @ 9:35 pm

    60. This series has been more of what I hoped for all year long. This team has been fun to watch.

      Comment by CeeKeR — 5/14/2008 @ 9:36 pm

    61. Was that scored an infield hit for Phillips, then an error letting him advance?

      Comment by Jimmy James — 5/14/2008 @ 9:36 pm

    62. I’ve been commenting in the wrong thread all game. Nice hustle by BP, in the grass the whole way.

      Comment by Jared — 5/14/2008 @ 9:37 pm

    63. If/when Bruce comes up Dusty won’t have the option not to play him.

      It won’t happen.

      Comment by Tom — 5/14/2008 @ 9:37 pm

    64. Great baserunning by BP!!!! 6-0!

      Comment by Jimmy James — 5/14/2008 @ 9:37 pm

    65. Man, Phillips is fun to watch. I really wish he would start hitting. He is aggressive, making things happen. Again, fun to watch.

      Comment by Chad — 5/14/2008 @ 9:38 pm

    66. Welcome to the correct game thread, Jared!

      Comment by Kenny — 5/14/2008 @ 9:39 pm

    67. I agree with Tom… I’m pretty sure that mandate would come from on high. And Tom… I do like the matchups for the Cleveland series! All are VERRRRY interesting. The only probable I dont like is Belisle tomorrow. I hope he gets shelled AGAIN tomorrow in a slugfest that the Reds can eventually win so we can finally put this thing to rest and get Bailey back up here.

      Comment by Justin Anderson — 5/14/2008 @ 9:41 pm

    68. Janish is in the game for his MLB debut. Good luck to the kid.

      Comment by Jimmy James — 5/14/2008 @ 9:41 pm

    69. Well, call it a night for Arroyo. Great seven-inning outing.

      Comment by Jimmy James — 5/14/2008 @ 9:42 pm

    70. Here’s to Paul Janish! Let’s see it kid!

      Comment by Justin Anderson — 5/14/2008 @ 9:42 pm

    71. First ball of the inning goes right to Janish Not a hard one, but fielded and thrown perfectly.

I’m sure he’s happy to have one under his belt now.

      Comment by Jimmy James — 5/14/2008 @ 9:43 pm

    72. Two in a row to the kid at SS! Nice work.

      Comment by Jimmy James — 5/14/2008 @ 9:44 pm

    73. Nice inning of work for Mike Lincoln. That’s good to see.

      Comment by Kenny — 5/14/2008 @ 9:45 pm

    74. Janish is gonna drop a bomb….. you heard it here first!

      Comment by Jack Bauer — 5/14/2008 @ 9:46 pm

    75. Janish gets the first two hit right to him. I’m sure that helped settle the butterflies! Good work by Lincoln in a quick inning. That’s what I like to see with a 6-0 lead.

      Comment by CeeKeR — 5/14/2008 @ 9:46 pm

    76. Was it a double switch? Will Janish get to hit this inning?

      Comment by Kenny — 5/14/2008 @ 9:48 pm

    77. Ahhhh took a shot

      Comment by Jack Bauer — 5/14/2008 @ 9:50 pm

    78. Well, Janish hit it hard, but it’s a long out.

      Comment by Jimmy James — 5/14/2008 @ 9:51 pm

    79. Ugh. 6-1, no outs…

      Comment by CeeKeR — 5/14/2008 @ 9:58 pm

    80. Correct me if I’m wrong, but isn’t this a save situation? 5 run game, no outs, 2 men in scoring position…

      Comment by SchrockStar — 5/14/2008 @ 9:59 pm

    81. Lincoln has fallen apart this inning.

      Comment by Jimmy James — 5/14/2008 @ 10:00 pm

    82. I doubt Lincoln finishes the season with the Reds.

      Comment by crypticphrasing — 5/14/2008 @ 10:01 pm

    83. Yes this is a save situation. Not for Lincoln, but for whomever comes in.

      Comment by Tom — 5/14/2008 @ 10:02 pm

    84. I’m very impressed that Dusty is bringing in Coco right now with the bases loaded in the 8th. Most managers wouldn’t do that, but this is precisely the situation in which we need our best reliever out there.

      Comment by Chad — 5/14/2008 @ 10:03 pm

    85. 6-3 now… Still no outs. I shouldn’t be so nervous.

      Comment by CeeKeR — 5/14/2008 @ 10:04 pm

    86. Yikes, 6-3

      Comment by Ron — 5/14/2008 @ 10:05 pm

    87. Oh no, Coco.

      Comment by Jimmy James — 5/14/2008 @ 10:09 pm

    88. OMG no way

      Comment by Ron — 5/14/2008 @ 10:09 pm

    89. There it goes. 6-6. &^$!

      Comment by CeeKeR — 5/14/2008 @ 10:09 pm

    90. Ouch. Meltdown of catastrophic proportions.

      Comment by DevilsAdvocate — 5/14/2008 @ 10:09 pm

    91. Well, 1st blown save, get it out of the way early I guess.

    95. Looks like Janish’s debut will last a little longer …

    101. Great use of the pinch runner in the 9th.

      Comment by TylerS — 5/14/2008 @ 10:25 pm

    102. Extra innings after heading into the 9th with a 6 run league. Where’s Danny Graves when you need him?

      Comment by CeeKeR — 5/14/2008 @ 10:25 pm

    103. Phillips grounds into double plays at a Sean Casey/Dante Bichette rate.

      Comment by john — 5/14/2008 @ 10:25 pm

    104. So, through two boneheaded substitutions, now both Griffey and Dunn aren’t in the lineup in extra innings.

Dusty needs to remember that 6 runs isn’t enough for a last place team.

      Comment by john — 5/14/2008 @ 10:28 pm

    105. That was the fastest I’ve ever seen a 6 run lead disappear.

Mike Lincoln’s wagon just turned into a pumpkin.

On the Jay Bruce front: If he’s here, he’s playing every day. Baker, to his credit, hasn’t fooled with either Votto or EE, after the first 10 days of the season.

    106. so is this the lineup now?

      votto
      ede
      pitcher
      bako
      janish

    107. Thom discussing the last time the Reds blew a 9th inning lead this big — the infamous Danny Graves Cardinals game.

I had been thinking about that game, which seemed so much more epic a failure than this one.

    109. The way Dunn and Griffey are hitting, that’s not a huge void they leave when they’re out of the game.

    113. Dunn just homered last time up, DA.

Cueto pinch running on 2nd. Yannish up to win it.

    114. let’s do this kid. janish walking off is about the only way for this game to really end on a high note.

cueto the pinch runner. i sort of hate it. but i sort of love it.

      Comment by Chad — 5/14/2008 @ 10:44 pm

    128. Geez that was a dumb pitch.

Yannish reminded me of my entire high school career right there - late on every good fastball, and somehow lucky enough to get a changeup or breaking ball often enough to get the job done.

What a great night for Janish.

    132. They had it all along…

That was a roller-coaster of a game. Congrats to Yanish though!

      Comment by CeeKeR — 5/14/2008 @ 10:46 pm

    133. Why in the world was Cueto pinch running? Two outs, Ross would have scored on most anything to the outfield. As far as I know, Cueto has never been a base runner in the minors or majors.

      Comment by rob — 5/14/2008 @ 10:46 pm

    134. Big ups to Paul Janish. Storybook major league debut if there ever was one. Very cool.

    135. It’s a shame that Arroyo doesn’t get a win after that great outing.

      Comment by Jimmy James — 5/14/2008 @ 10:47 pm

    136. Dude. They mobbed that kid! Freel was riding him like a bronco, and maybe gave him a bloody nose!

      Comment by Abner — 5/14/2008 @ 10:48 pm

    137. to stick up for the kid chris, he caught up with a fastall just fine in his first AB. nerves, pitcher on the mound with an 0.70 ERA, light rain, i don’t know. but i’m willing to withhold judgement on his batspeed for at least another day.

      Comment by al — 5/14/2008 @ 10:48 pm

    138. Absolutely true, Dunn homered his last time up. But still hitting .208 for the year, with 7 homers over nearly 7 weeks. Unless that singular at-bat represents him turning a major corner, those are bad odds. On the other hand, the Reds have no bench. And if the Dunn/Griffey combo is out, that means Patterson, Freel, and Hairston are in for the duration no matter what. Didn’t matter tonight, thankfully.

      Comment by DevilsAdvocate — 5/14/2008 @ 10:50 pm

    139. Its all right … we would have lost this game last year … our pen held on barely enough to win

      Comment by Ron — 5/14/2008 @ 10:51 pm

    140. Wow, rob, that’s true. Cueto has no hits and one walk this year, and had one hit and no walks in the minors last year. That’s the sum total of his on-base exploits as a pro.

      Comment by DevilsAdvocate — 5/14/2008 @ 10:53 pm

    141. And so the youth movement begins!!!!!

    142. I just knew the Reds would win it in the bottom of the tenth.

Let’s just hope Janish hasn’t peaked too early. :)

    143. Fair enough, Al. I was going to say, but got too excited, that Griffey has looked utterly inept many times over the past couple years. Still doesn’t explain why that dude threw him a changeup in this at bat, when he clearly couldn’t catch up to the fastball.

      Comment by Chris — 5/14/2008 @ 11:02 pm

    144. Watching that replay on Gameday, I just noticed that Freel kicked Janish in the face during the celebration. Is that guy just a buffoon or what?

      Comment by john — 5/14/2008 @ 11:13 pm

    145. Geez, if they would have beat on him anymore we would have needed another short stop
