Game Thread: Marlins at Reds

Its a BlackBerry-posted, one-handed (just had surgery for carpal tunnel) game thread! I’m in pain, but here is your stupid thread!

Enjoy the game and discuss it here. I’m stuck at a T-Ball doubleheader.

Breaking News:  Jeff Keppinger has left the game after fouling a ball off his knee — BROKEN PATELLA.  Out indefinitely.

This “going without a backup SS” thing should change.

T-Ball doubleheader? Man, the days sure have changed since I played.

carpal tunnel and t-ball? Add a ballet recital and you’d have the trifecta.

  • Ouch, glad you got it taken care of, Chad. I had CTS at 23 years old. :(

    Chad – I hope you’re back to 100% soon.

Ouch. Just read the intro post. Working on carpal for the other hand – with the BlackBerry and all? Take it easy, already. But thanks for a place to discuss the game, of course.

grrr … Im in Alabama and Direct TV says I am in the Florida Marlins market and so these games are blacked out …WTF?

    ReplyReply
  • Ron

Splain it to me again why Patterson ever starts over Freel?

  • Dave from Louisville

Did anyone ever think Voltron would be this good??

I thought he would be above average, but not Cy Youngish. He is awesome.

You know? I kinda like this Chattanooga announcer. Marty seems to have taken a more civil and respectful tone with him in the booth, too.

Just keep your fingers crossed Dave … Im hoping its for real and that 10 years from now he will be our current version of Soto … minus the arm problems

    ReplyReply
  • Thanks for the good wishes. T-ball went well; we tied in both games.

And I do have a ballet recital to attend in a couple of weeks, which should be more painful than surgery.

  • Good question re: Volquez. He is unreal.

Tony Perez in the tv booth. Good to see him again.

Hamilton is pretty damn unreal too.

I can’t believe the start he is off to either.

    ReplyReply
  • Ron

Yeah, imagine how many more wins we’d have if we’d have been able to get Volquez & keep Josh

Sac Fly. Not really any hard hit balls vs Edinson this inning, though.

High pitch count though … prolly the last inning of work for Eddi V

Wow, Dusty is letting Volquez hit in the top of the sixth.

    ReplyReply

Unless he gets quick outs … I’d be surprised if he makes it thru the 6th

    fractured patella for kepp.

Ouch! Marty just said that Keppinger has fractured his patella. That’s bad news.

    Very bad news re: Kepp.

    ReplyReply
  • Chris

I guess it has to be Janish, no?

I assume they’ll try to roll with Hairston in the interim, but he can’t be considered a legitimate SS. No real experience, and his small-sample Range Factor is abysmal.

    ReplyReply
  • Chris

    What’s the pitch count here?

    ReplyReply
  • Ron

Lets hope they bring up Janish … I really enjoyed watching him in spring training … kid is ready defensively … anything we get from him with the bat will be a bonus

    ReplyReply
  • Nathan

this is not good. . .just when the season looked like it couldn’t have gotten worse.

    ReplyReply
  • Jimmy James

Well, EV made it thru the 6th, one run allowed.

    ReplyReply
  • Good work by Volquez. Hopefully the Reds can hang on.

Hate to hear that about Keppinger. I do hope they bring up Janish. When I saw him in Richmond he looked good, especially on defense.

I’d like to see Valaika, but that would be an insane move.

if i’m the GM or manager, no way do i let hairston start at shortstop. as the tv guys just mentioned, he’s one of the few actual contributors off the bench, and he’d just weaken the infield so badly.

it has to be janish. that or just get crazy and call up valaika.

    ReplyReply
  • DevilsAdvocate

Ouch. That is bad, bad news about Keppinger. And he was on fire of late, too. Crap.

How’s the stress fracture healing for Gonzalez? Suddenly I’ve gone from hoping he’s not back anytime soon, to ‘Get back soon!’

    ReplyReply
  • Jimmy James

Corey Patterson is clearly the best player ever.

    ReplyReply
  • Hmmm…Valaika. Yes, it is insane, but I love the idea. Bring him up for a couple of weeks.

    ReplyReply
  • Chris

Someone (Marty or Thom) said something about Gonzalez having a new, smaller knee brace and working out today.

But it was earlier in the game, before Kepp got hurt, so I was less than interested in Gonzalez’ return.

thom said gonzo was taking bp, but that he was still “nowhere close to coming back.”

BTW, I can’t believe they’re making T-ballers grind out double-headers down there. Brutal.

    ReplyReply
  • Tom

Phillips to SS, Freel at 2B. Nah, won’t happen, that would make sense.

    ReplyReply
  • Dave from Louisville

    What has gotten into Patterson?!

The news about Keppinger sucks. I say Janish is the only option. Gonzo has to be about healed right?

The problems with the roster need to be fixed very soon. Two of the following need to be traded immediately because it is killing our bench: Freel, Hatteburg, Griffey, Valentin.

Again I think Krivsky’s inability to address these horrible roster problems lead to him getting fired so early. In the NL you need a deep bench, Valentin and Hatteburg needed to be traded before the season started. Freel should be traded while his value is high, and Griffey should be traded as soon as possible. Keep Patterson/Hopper in center and Bruce in right, and bring up Phillips for the bench.

    Dunn pisses me off

    ReplyReply
  • Dave from Louisville

Griffey is 38 so I understand when he gets off to a slow start.

Dunn 29 and in a contract year. He should be automatic 40 hr and 100+ rbi. Walks don’t mean shit if you hit in the 7th spot in the line-up. Hit the ball.

    ReplyReply
  • Jimmy James

Well, good for Janish. Not good for the Reds, since I don’t expect him to be much offensively. He WILL be able to cut the mustard defensively.

With he, Patterson, Ross, and the pitcher in the lineup….ugly.

it’s his fault he’s hitting in the 7-hole? he’s made two productive outs in the last two games, and all we ever hear about is how much extra hitting he does.

am i frustrated that our two best hitters have fallen off the planet? sure. but after what dunn has done over the past 5 season, i just don’t get that kind of criticism.

just it the ball? have you read the posts about how he’s gotten fewer strikes than almost anyone in the league?

i’ll take an AB like that one from dunn any day. bunch of foul balls, spoiling good pitches. just missed the last one.

Coco comes in to face the heart of the FLA order. This is why he makes the big bucks!!!

    ReplyReply
  • I agree with al. Dunn doesn’t deserve the criticism, at least not yet. You know every at bat by Dunn will make the pitcher work (unlike the rest of the hack-n-whack Reds batters). In addition, I still think you can count on 40 homeruns, 100 rbis from Dunn. He’ll heat up as the weather warms up…

I cede the point about hitting in the 7 hole, but he sucks this year. It’s mid-May and his average is 0.203. Another out and he’s on the interstate.

just looks like a different team than we saw in NY. both of these games have been played well, aside from the bullpen looking shakier than it has.

the question will be, how does janish handle his big league debut if indeed he is the call.

Getting pretty excited about this team! Now just bring up Bruce and Bailey, and I won’t be able to control myself.

Dunn is certainly open for criticism. He is expected to lead this team offensively and he is the worst hitter on the team right now. We are 1/4 of the way through the season. He has to start hitting the ball, period.
