Game Thread: Cubs at Reds — 2008.05.06

The Reds have won one straight game! It’s a winning streak!!

We gotta whale of a pitching matchup tonight: Aaron Harang vs. Carlos Zambrano. I don’t care how pathetic the Reds have been this season, on paper this is a game worth watching.

So watch it, and discuss it here….

My prediction is that the Reds will win the next 8 to get above .500.

didn’t harang used to throw up to 94? he’s hit 90 once tonight. you can’t argue with results, and he clearly gets them, but it’s strange.

also, as has been said before, i’d love to see harang throw a pitch inside to anyone ever.

Votto gets picked off second. Is it just me, or do the Reds make more outs on the bases than any team ever?

Am I the only one who thinks Keppinger looks like Neil Patrick Harris?

I think you’re right, RagTag, but it’s mostly Ryan Freel who is doing dumb stuff to get picked off.

Looks like Zambrano will be allowing some baserunners tonight. Of coure, it won’t matter if those baserunners keep getting themselves taken off the bases.

Harang hit 92 on the gun there.

Man, the Cubs announcers are just terrible.

It’s always strange seeing Alan Trammell in a Cubs uniform. I used to love watching him and Sweet Lou Whitaker for the Tigers.

    Doogie Hauser = Keppinger

We have to give up more outs on the bases than any team in baseball.

Zambrano can hit, I wish our pitchers could hit like that.

Harang is rolling now. And the Cubs broadcast says that “Nako” is leading off the bottom half of the inning for the Reds.

I wish our HITTERS could hit like Zambrano!

“Sticking with a struggling closer gets more managers fired than anything else,” according to this idiot Cubs announcer.

Junior hit that one very hard, but right at Pie in CF.

Big K for Harang for out number two.

That was a LUCKY 2 out hit. Reds need to start getting those

This offense needs to get on the board now. Big Z is not in the zone tonight.

Ugh. One hit thru 4 while the Cubs have 3 runs on 3 hits. Gotta get this offense going.

Big double play there to keep the lead from growing any more. But if the hitters don’t start hitting, it won’t matter either way.

    This offense still stinks.

    …except for Aaron Harang.

Why oh why did I bother getting Extra Innings package on Direct TV … I should have known better … they cant even score when the Scrubs try to give them runs

Tonight looks a bit more like the Jared Burton that I expected to see this year. he has thrown some nasty pitches.

    Keepinger has no range whatsoever.

    There, I said it.

I don’t know why they even show up? Watching good pitches go by…I’d rather watch girls softball!

  • I think the Reds would make my pitching look good… I’ve seen little league teams with more plate discipline than the Reds.

Watching pitches go by? Are we watching the same game? The Reds have been hacking at everything.

    ReplyReply
  • All I’ve seen them do is swing and make lousy, easy out contact… Blech.

Remember the old Reds teams that would strike out a lot but also hit plenty of homeruns? That team could score more than 3 runs…or even 1 run.

I would rather them strike out and make strong contact, then this weak stuff.

  • “Dusty Baker is taking no chances. That extra run out there means a whole lot.”

yeah, it means the Reds lose by 4 instead of only 3 runs.

It sure us nice having Dunn on this team, we defeinately should sign this clutch hitting mammoth to a long term deal

    Jacoby has to go.

Harang needs to let his frustration out on the offense.

    Jacoby?
he had dunn hitting well last year.
maybe its that we have griffey and patterson in the top 4 hitters in the lineup half the time.
    maybe we should go with

    Freel
    Phillips
    Votto
    EdE
    Dunn
    Keppy
    Bruce
    Bako

Yes i know Votto is young to be third
    but he has the stuff
    phillips is great
but he is not a 3 or 4 hitter
he is a number 2 guy
    great speed
    let votto knock him in.
    EdE has clutch stuff.
let bruce get his feet wet at number 7
until he is our 4 guy

    Harang
    Volquez
    Cueto
    Bailey
    Thompson or Maloney

Don’t be a Dusty. I’d rather have Dunn second that Phillips. Just because Phillips has speed doesn’t necessarily make him a #2 hitter. I prefer him better in the fifth spot in the lineup.

Don’t get me wrong I love Harang but it just seems like every time they run him out there he gets rocked, not necessarily by giving up a lot of runs but he gets hit so hard it seems like every other hit is somewhere near the warning track it’s just seems kind of odd to me…Also I Dunn doesn’t belong in the 4 spot, if even in the every day lineup…It doesn’t really even seem like he has a will or desire to win…However, Phillips, although he leads the team in strikeouts, is a very productive hitter and should be in the 4 spot

yeah I agree about putting phillips there just because of speed but shouldn’t a number 2 hitter be able to put down a bunt and that is not adam dunn. The reds need fundamentals because the long ball is not working for them as of late and it has in other seasons. Dunn has done well in the number 2 spot but if freel gets on base wouldn’t you rather have an out with runner on 2nd than an out from a K and that runner still at first. Granted Freel is not always the smartest base runner, but he can also make things happen with his speed. Dunn can crush it but at this point the Reds need to go back to the basics to get runs.

The Reds for so long counted on their hitters to get the job done. They were so preoccupied with pitching last year, as they should be, but some how, neglected to work on hitting. Either the batting coach is sleeping during the game or the scouts are not watching the pitchers from previous games. Nevertheless, the batters are cold and for the most part have been for this whole season. Tonight showcased this and I fear this is a trend that will continue the rest of the season. The depth the Reds have when it comes to hitting is quite sufficient and should be producing better outcomes than this. The players need a fire lit under the butts or more practice.

Votto has done nothing in cleanup and now you are ready to promote him to batting 3rd. Glad we all have a plan. Mine is to blow this team up starting with Dunn and Griff. the pitching staff is surprisingly solid and doesn’t require drastic modification. So its not all bad. And time to promote Bailey and Bruce. I didn’t like the idea when the season started but as of now it can only improve the situation.

The Reds have gone 20 consecutive innings without scoring an earned run.
